If you feel like you’ve been “living underground” recently, folks like the residents of Coober Pedy will tell you to chill out because they are one of the communities that have actually dug down beneath the earth to establish their home. Here then, are several awesome underground cities that might make you want to live in a cave.

Awesome Underground Cities

1. Coober Pedy, South Australia

This famous albeit remote spot in South Australia has been used in several movies including The Adventures of Priscilla, Kangaroo Jack, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome; Queen of the Desert; and Red Planet. A lot of this town’s 1800 residents work in the opal-mining business. When they’re off the clock, they still choose to stay underground. After all, the desert sun pushes the temperatures into the triple-digits for most of the year. These locals beat the heat in their multi-room “dugouts.” If you would like to see for yourself you can stay underneath “Down Under” by getting a nice subterranean suite at the nearby Comfort Inn.

2. Matmata, Tunisia

Star Wars fans will recognize Matmata’s Berber village from the 1977 film Star Wars and 2002’s Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. While Luke Skywalker no longer “lives” there, this place is still home to the real-life, cave-dwelling nomads who roamed this region for centuries. Their homes, or “troglodytes, were actually dug out of the ground by hand.

They start with a single circular opening that eventually is used as a courtyard for other rooms that are dug off of it. It wasn’t a well-known place until the 1960s when the area was impacted by flooding. Today it’s quite popular.

3. Derinkuyu, Turkey

Here in Turkey’s Nevsehir province, there were once dozens of underground villages. Some of those villages harken back to circa 700 BC. The largest one had multiple levels and was home to over 20,000 people.

This community includes all the elements of civilization. Chapels, schools, stores, and even a water system. Cappadocian Greeks sheltered here during wars up ‘til the 1900s. Sometime in 1969, this complex became less of a residence and more of a cool tourist destination. Mind you, when you’re as much as 250 feet underground amidst reportedly “hundreds of thousands of square feet of tunnel,” who knows what you’ll discover.

4. The Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain

Located close to the southern tip of the famous Iberian Peninsula, Setenil is truly a bizarre sight to see. A major portion of this town and the streets are actually built into the stunning surrounding cliffs. Here you’ll see huge rock overhangs 20 to 30 feet overhead as you explore the main drag.

Additionally, you’ll also discover that a number of the storefronts and homes here are little more than façades. In truth, caves are what constitute the majority of the enclosed space because 900 years ago this used to be a Moorish fortress. Today it’s a charming place with 3000 residents.

5. Guadix, Southern Spain

Since you’re already in Spain, hop in your car and head 2.5 hours east. There you can visit the ancient troglodyte village known as Guadix. There are almost 2000 underground homes across the property, dug into the now compacted earth.

The locals here are famous for their hospitality. They often invite travelers in to see their unique homes. Of course, if you’d rather enjoy a more upscale experience, then you’d best reserve a room at the five-star Casas Cuevas Almagruz y Centro de Interpretación Hábitat Troglodita Almagruz. It’s a popular hacienda burrowed into an old sandstone outcropping located on the edge of town.

6. Matera, Italy

The ancient city of Matera was once considered a slum. To those who had never seen Roberto Benigni’s 2019 film Pinocchio, it was even called “the shame of Italy.” In truth, it is one of the oldest still inhabited cities in the world.

It is now alive with wine, culture, and art while its ages-old cliff architecture essentially remains unchanged. Technically, this specific city is not exactly underground since it is actually carved into the rock and gray limestone to one side of the ground. Still, these caves, known as sassi, are incredible. This city, which appears to be both stratospheric and subterranean, includes arches, courtyards, connecting stairways, and tunnels.

7. The Beijing Underground, China

Beijing is one of the most densely populated and largest cities in the world. Space is at a premium. That’s one reason why roughly 1 million people live underground at “bargain-basement prices.” These underground dwellers are called shuzu or “the rat tribe.”
It began during the Cold War when Chairman Mao decided that 20,000 bomb shelters would be excavated to protect people from possible Soviet missile strikes. This small, windowless network of boxes that range from 30 to 300 square feet each. They were turned into hostel rooms back in the 1980s. At less than $60.00 per month, it was a deal the shuzu couldn’t refuse.

8. Singapore

Here in Singapore, you don’t get so much of a historic feel for underground living but a glimpse into the future. There have been underground museums and malls in this admittedly densely populated city-state for over 10 years now. The country’s Urban Redevelopment Authority continues to move heaven and (ahem) earth to promote their progressive concepts.

They have put at over $150 million into related projects. One of the more well-known proposals is the creation of the planet’s first “earth scraper.” People in the know report that these projects are not simply about conserving space but also about conserving energy.

9. Similar Projects

As this goes to press, similar projects for cities are in the works in places like Singapore’s underground park project meant in part as a response to the threat of global warming. There is also New York’s “Lowline” which was meant to be the first subterranean park complete with remote skylights to allow sunlight in for the vegetation. While mounting costs have halted work, officials in Helsinki, Finland, have already announced their own “Underground Master Plan.”

The apparatus is connected to a boat with a cable. The rider holds the wings as the boat moves slowly through the water. The wings can be adjusted to propel the rider up to the surface, deeper down into the water or even in a 360° roll. The rider must be able to hold his/her breath in between moves to the surface and keep holding on to the wings.

Flyboarding

Next is flyboarding.  It was “born” in 2012. You strap your feet onto a special board that has water jets on it. You are tethered with a hose to the jetski.

It pumps water to the jets. The pilot of the jet ski handles the throttle and decides when to increase the power and send you flying. You will fly as high as 70 feet.

If you’re good you’ll be able to roll, flip and dive beneath the waves. Miami, Florida in the US is the best place to try flyboarding. Experts say that this city provides travelers with the optimal conditions to try this activity.

Zorbing

One or two participants stand in the center of a huge, clear, inflatable plastic ball. The ball is pushed down a downhill course to roll down to the bottom. If you wish to go zorbing you can either be strapped into a harness and roll along with the giant ball.

The other option involves filling the ball with water so that you will move around inside the ball. The ball is called a zorb or an “OGO ball.” It was originally made to allow people to walk on water (similar to the ball in that 1971 James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever.

Cheese Rolling

The centuries-old, yearly cheese rolling competition is held in England in May outside of Gloucester. At present 2,000 people gather to 100 international competitors roll (not cut) the cheese. A nine-pound wheel of double Gloucester cheese is sent rolling down a rocky, steep hill.

Almost immediately after that, the cheese-loving participants chase it. The cheese is nearly impossible to catch since it speeds down the 200-yard hill at roughly 70 miles per hour. The first person to catch up to it at the bottom scores the cheese itself. Due to numerous past injuries, this is no longer an officially-managed competition.

Blobbing

This activity takes lake leaping to new (ahem) heights. Blobbing takes place on a huge inflatable raft that resembles a blob. You sit at one end of the blob while your partner onto the other end launching you up into the air and then into the water.

How high you’re sent into the air is influenced by the size of your partner. A larger jumper will send a smaller person higher. The best place to go blobbing at present is in the US state of West Virginia. They also have a 25-foot climbing mountain, an obstacle course, seesaws, and giant spinning balls too.

Submarining

Explore under the sea without a snorkel or scuba gear. Take a voyage in a battery-powered submarine. You can safely travel 500 feet below the waves effortlessly. These submarines also have environmental advantages over diving and snorkeling too.

They are emission-free. They also don’t generally disturb the sea life either. Finally, since ocean visitors are in a submarine there’s no chance that any sunscreen will damage the coral and ignorant people cannot cause harm by touching anything they simply should not touch. The best place to go submarining to tour a reef is in the American island state of Hawaii.

Cliff Swinging

China’s the place to be! At least, if you want to strap on a harness and be shoved off a horrifically high cliff. It’s the latest thing in theme park attractions there. The most terrifying swing is located in the Wansheng Ordovician Park in Chongqing.

The harness is connected to a beam that is 60 feet high. Passengers are pulled backward face down at a 90-degree angle. Held only by the harness, they’re heaved out over a 1,000-foot drop. This park also features a 121+ meter (400-foot) high, 70-meter (229+feet) long cantilevered glass skywalk too.

Underwater Scootering

If you’re not interested in scuba school, but want to go underwater try underwater scootering in Cancun or Hawaii. It combines slow-speed zooming and ocean exploration. These battery-powered, eco-friendly underwater scooters come with large helmets known as BOBS (breathing observation bubbles).

The helmet is connected by a tube to the air above the water. No tank or mask is required. The headgear is even big enough to provide almost 360-degree visibility.

You wear one while seated on the scooter. The scooter goes as high as nine mph. It can stop almost immediately when the rider disengages the propeller.

Also known as powered paragliding (PPG), you not only dangle from a parachute 8,000 feet in the air, you’ve got a motor strapped on your back. Because it’s more complicated than paragliding, you’re better off taking a class. In fact, there’s a school in Santa Barbara, CA in the US.

Once you’re certified, you can easily participate in numerous multi-day paramotorer adventures around the world. If you live or vacation in Europe, there is also an officially accredited training school located in Spain. Before you know it, you’ll be flying over Moorish castles and Andalusian beaches too.

Hovercrafting

Hovercrafting can get you to shallow rivers and rocky beaches that would otherwise be inaccessible by boat. Traveling via hovercraft will provide you with a unique view of the planet’s landscapes. A hovercraft travels on a cushion of air created by a very powerful fan beneath the vessel.

These hovercrafts go up to 60 mph. Hovercraft tours are available in the US state of Maine. The terrain there is reportedly beautiful but not generally good for more conventional boating. You can also participate in hovercraft wildlife tours along the rugged coastline of the state of Alaska.

Now you’ll be able to sail without getting wet when you go sand yachting. Explore flat, immense stretches of windblown, sandy beaches. A sand yacht is a three-tired buggy powered and steered by the wind via a sail.

Rollercoaster Ziplining

If you’re tired of ziplining, this will kick it up a notch. Visit the top of the CN Tower in Canada. The skywalk here is 1,168 feet above the ground. The walkway here is free of handrails and only five feet wide.

Feel free to lean out over the edge but remember only your harness will save you from splattering onto the streets of Toronto. It might be frightening but the view of Lake Ontario and the city are worth it. You can also go edge walking on the impressive Macau Tower in China.

Hydrospeeding

Also called river sledging, hydrospeeding is a combination of white water rafting and bodyboarding. Participants hold onto the handles of a foam board that works with the specific contours of a human body. Riders must wear a helmet and a wetsuit.  Riders are required to wear even more protective gear if the rapids are notably shallow.

Additionally, the foam board is also designed to protect people from rocks or other obstacles. Everyone must be present for a brief training session in calm water before a guide will take them into the rapids. At present, the best places to hydrospeed can be found in the mountainous regions of Italy and France. You must be a proficient swimmer for this activity.

The phrase “underwater city” might make you think about Atlantis from the movie “Aquaman.” Plato even alluded to the fictional island many years ago. Ah, but there are actually places in the real world where you will find more than an octopus’s garden. Rest assured there are real-life underwater cities as well. Here we present but seven stunning travel destinations if you would like to explore undersea cities and villages.

1. Shi Cheng, China

Shi Cheng is an ancient city now under Lake Qiandao. This ancient metropolis, founded roughly 1300 years ago, currently lies between 26 and 40 meters (85+ and 131+ feet) beneath the water.

The valley where the city was located was intentionally flooded back in 1959. The government did so in order to build a hydroelectric power plant and an artificial lake. The power station no longer produces energy but is a top tourist stop. The peaks of the submerged mountains look like groups of islets thus this place is nicknamed the Lake of the Thousand Islands.

The water temperature averages between 50 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit and thus the underwater city remains in remarkable condition. You can see its gateway and buildings carved with various mythological creatures. The weather is always acceptable but the very best time to visit this Qing dynasty city is in the fall when it is sunny, dry, and colorful.

2. Kalyazin, Russia

If you’re rushin’ to Russia here is another special spot to add to your potential itinerary. Oh, what’s even better is you do not necessarily need to be a scuba diver to explore the Kalyazin ruins either. The city’s cathedral belfry towers high over the water.

Once significant as an important commercial center, it began to lose its importance following a revolution in 1917. Decades passed and it became all but insignificant. Thus in 1940 the powers that be decided to relocate the locals to higher ground and sink most of the city in order to construct the Úglich reservoir.

3. Sant Romà de Sau, Spain

San Romà de Sau is a little village in Catalonia’s Osona region. It is totally submerged by the water of the Sau dam. This place once had a bridge, homes, and even a nice Romanesque church.

The best time to visit is when the reservoir is not filled to capacity. It is then that you can see the church’s bell tower emerging from out of the water. Mind you, if you get there during a drought you can visit the ruins of the entire village because there is no water there at all.

4. Mediano, Spain

The underwater village of Mediano can be found in Huesca, Spain. In 1969 the village was intentionally flooded in order to build a reservoir. The news media did not report it when it happened but the reservoir was opened with warning the locals.

When the area began to flood, the residents had to flee their homes taking little more than only what they could carry. All but one building disappeared as the water level rose. The bell tower of Mediano’s church–which dates back to the 1600s– remained above the maximum water level. If you visit today you will be able to see a few of the buildings rising slightly above the water’s surface.

5. Port Royal, Jamaica

Port Royal is one of the country’s oldest areas. Thus, it is considered by its citizens to be a significant part of its overall heritage. Unfortunately, for history buffs, part of it is actually under the water.

Port Royal was the official seat of the British government in Jamaica during the 1600s. It was once a popular place for outlaws and pirates and acquired titles such as the “Sodom of the New World” and the “wickedest city on earth.” In 1692 the city was submerged by a tsunami.

The underwater city is not in the best condition that it could be due to the fact that it simply has not been maintained all that well. Nevertheless, according to the official Visit Jamaica website the water around Port Royal is reported to be “an archaeological gold mine, full of pieces of history that tell stories of the early days of the English occupation.”

6.  The Lost Villages of Ontario, Canada

A total of 10 different towns make up the famous “Lost Villages” of Ontario, Canada. They were all once municipalities of Osnabruck and Cornwall in Ontario. In 1958 the construction of a new waterway both of those areas was submerged.

Visitors can see buildings and sidewalks from some places above the water’s surface. Canada dedicated a museum to these submerged towns to keep their history alive. One of the museum’s more memorable exhibits includes a few of the structures that were relocated from the towns that were submerged. Great care has been taken to restore them to their pre-flood condition.

7. Pavlopetri, Greece

Pavlopetri is perhaps the oldest underwater city in the world. It is ensconced off the southern coast of Lakonia. The city was flooded approximately 5,000 years ago. It was not discovered until some time in 1967. Ever since then it has been a highly valuable archaeological site.

According to sources at the BBC, Jon Henderson of the United Kingdom’s University of Nottingham commented on this place following some more recent discoveries back in 2009. He told reporters:

“It is a unique discovery in the sense that we have found on the seabed an almost complete city, with streets, buildings, gardens, tombs and what looks like a religious complex.” The sunken city of Pavlopetri is one of the sites travelers can visit along the different “water ruins” routes offered in the general Peloponnese area.

So there you have it, dear travelers. Not all underwater cities are fictional. Not all underwater cities require visitors to be a scuba diver (although it does generally help). Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, England

It happens in London’s famous Hyde Park from November 21st through January 5th. The event includes more than 100 attractions and rides, and shows. Highlights include a visit into the popular Magical Ice Kingdom, skating on the largest outdoor ice rink in the UK, seeing the memorable views from the Giant Observation Wheel, enjoying festive cocktails at Bar Ice and Ice Sculpting Workshops.

There’s even the popular Santa Land. It is reported to be the city’s largest Christmas market. Dine at one of the numerous cafes or restaurants. Admission is free.

Old Town Square Christmas Market, Czech Republic

This Christmas market is held in the Old Town Square in Prague. It’s open from December 1 through January 6. The Old Town Square Christmas Market is also the largest one in Prague.

See the market’s centerpiece, the Prague Christmas Tree, towering in front of the well-known Church of Tyn. Here you can browse the numerous stalls and sample delicious food too. Be sure to try the tasty Pražská Šunka, a big, pit-roasted ham, langoš, a special Hungarian flatbread topped with cheese, garlic, cheese, and even ketchup; as well as an assortment of cakes and sweets like trdelník, a favored hot sugar-coated pastry.

Plaza Mayor Christmas Market, Spain

The Plaza Mayor Christmas Market is held in Madrid during the months of November and December. The specific dates vary from year to year. Here both tourists and locals gather to discover different holiday traditions. There are more than 100 stands where you can peruse and purchase Christmas decorations, gag gifts, musical instruments, toys and more. It’s a wonderful, annual event to celebrate the traditions of the season.

Edinburgh’s Christmas Market, Scotland

This market is (of course) held in East Princes St Gardens in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It opens on November 16th and runs through January 4th. There’s plenty to do for everyone.

One of the highlights here is the classic Santa Land which includes the fun Christmas Tree Maze, the exciting Candy Cane Bungees, and the adventurous Helter Skelter slide. There’s even an adrenaline-boosting rollercoaster. Adults can visit the Johnnie Walker Bothy Bar. Located on the Mound, it serves hot toddies and a great variety of traditional Scottish whisky cocktails.

The York Christmas Festival, England

The York Christmas Festival occurs in Yorkshire. It runs from November 14 through December 22. In 2017 York was even voted the “Most Festive City” in the UK. That’s due in part to the medieval charm that York is said to add to the season.

The very air is filled with the seasonal scents of spiced mulled wine and different delicious dishes. Get there on opening night and you can the first official lighting of the festival. Get a bite to eat at the popular Shambles Food Court and have a drink at Thor’s Tipi too.

Fira de Santa Llúcia, Spain

Feel the festive spirit of the season free of the cold in Barcelona. Open through December, you can stroll the decorated streets and tall fir trees in both Plaça de Sant Jaume and Portal de l’Angel. Fira de Santa Llúcia is the main Christmas fair and it’s more than 225 years old.

The fair is ensconced below the impressive Gothic Cathedral and the many stalls there offer numerous seasonal goods and handmade items. If you get homesick for some winter chill, you can stop in at the well-known Ice Bar. It features a sub-zero chamber complete with awesome ice sculptures. Even the drinking glasses are made out of ice!

Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt, Austria

Located in Rathausplatz, Vienna, this festive event begins on November 15 and runs through December 26. It’s Vienna’s most famous Christmas market. Get an eyeful of the huge Rathaus Christmas tree in the center of the market.

If you’re hankering for a few festive foods, you can sample cream-filled pastries, different kinds of pretzels, big donuts, roast chestnuts, and the traditional Victorian-style lollipops. The Christkindlmarkt is open every day but you really should visit at night when the assorted smells and colorful lights truly will give you the real Christmas market experience.

The Winter Wonders Festival, Belgium

The world-famous Winter Wonders Festival is held in Brussels. It runs from November 29 through January 5th.  Brussels, like other major metropolises, hosts more than one Christmas market. Veteran visitors suggest attending the one at the Grand-Place.

Those in the know say this place is the very “heart of the Winter Wonders Festival” and is marked by a gigantic Christmas tree. One of the highlights is the sound and light show that goes on every half hour. There’s even a big Ferris wheel that provides incredible views of the city. Don’t forget the waffles either!

Wonderland Parque Eduardo VII, Portugal

All across Lisbon, there are several Christmas markets. One of the largest is the Wonderland Parque Eduardo VII. It runs from December 1st through New Year’s Day. The main Christmas tree is found at Praça do Comércio.

You will also find vendor stalls where you can purchase handcrafted goods, an outdoor ice-skating rink and a tall Ferris wheel too. You can also see a light show and a motion picture shown directly on the nearby buildings. Visit the Christmas village in Obidos an hour’s drive north of the city. There’s something for everyone.

Advent Feast at the Basilica, Hungary

Visit Budapest between November 23 and January 6 and experience the Advent Feast at the Basilica. Located in front of the city’s most well-known cathedral, this open-air market has stalls offering visitors festive items and (of course) genuine Hungarian food too. Sample some chimney cake known as flódni for dessert. Be sure to be there at dark for the famous 3D light show right on the front of the famous St. Stephen’s Basilica.

There are some questions that may never be answered. Even today, archaeologists and other researchers are unable to solve the mysteries left behind by some previous people. Indeed, here are 22 mysterious monuments from ancient civilizations.

The Pyramids of Giza

Located in Cairo, Egyptologists still can only speculate about this 4,500-year-old burial complex. How could ancient architects assemble these specific structures as high as 149 meters (459 feet)? How could millions of stone blocks weighing several tons even be moved several kilometers in the first place? How the builders could be so precise with such rudimentary tools remains a mystery to this day.

Pyramids

The ancient Egyptians built pyramids. But how did pyramids come to be built in both Mexico and Japan as well? How did people with such limited resources erect such impressive structures?
Was there once an internationally-known architectural method about which we now know nothing? Many theories have been posed and not all are scientific. Could they be the product of alien activity or a peculiar paranormal phenomenon?

Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan is just northeast of Mexico City. Historians remain uncertain as to who built this 9.7-square-mile (25-square-kilometer) site. Scientists proved it the Aztecs did not construct this 2,000-year-old location.
They only “inherited” it. Additionally, Hugh Harleston, an American engineer, discovered that Teotihuacan is actually a model of our own solar system. The various buildings proportionally correspond to the size and position of the planets.

Tiwanaku

Located on a high-altitude plain in Bolivia, this pre-Columbian city is over 1,000 years old. Some believe it to be between 4,000 and 12,000 years old. Regardless of its age, researchers agree that it could be one of the world’s oldest cities. The impressive details of the stonework indicate that this was once the home of people who were ahead of their time.

Tiermes

Found in Spain’s Castile-León region, Tiermes is nearly entirely carved in the rock there. The ruins include city gates, a forum, homes, and an impressive aqueduct system. Researchers do not yet know for sure who built this city or even when. They do know that the Romans aided in the city’s economic development and that the Celtiberians, the Visigoths, and the Moors all passed through here.

Petra

Although this city was erected in the fourth century BC, this once important trading center in Jordan was forgotten before the eighth century AD. In 1812, it was rediscovered and deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site. Researchers still have questions. How were the inhabitants able to carve the entire town from the rock? How were they even able to have enough water in one of the world’s most arid areas?

Great Zimbabwe

Ensconced in the hills of southeastern Zimbabwe, this 2.7 square-mile (7 square-kilometer) ancient trade center was built by the Shona people sometime between the 11th and 15th centuries. In 1871 it was rediscovered by a group of European explorers. Some researchers theorize this was once the location of the biblical, gold-rich King Solomon’s Mines. Unfortunately, this theory quickly led to the ruins being pillaged.

Temples of Malta

Found in the famous Maltese archipelago, the megalithic temples of Malta are a treasure. The islands of Gozo and Malta include some of the planet’s oldest prehistoric architectural structures. These temples date back to somewhere between 4000 and 2500 BC. They are not only significantly elaborate in their design but are reportedly “advanced technical achievements” for that time period. They are included on the official UNESCO World Heritage list.

Newgrange

Situated north of Dublin, Ireland, the imposing Newgrange passage tomb is over 5,000 years old. It has a diameter of 2890 feet (85 meters). If you’re there close to the winter solstice, visit before sunrise. Watch as the sunlight passes through the opening on the mound and moves up the lengthy passage into the burial chamber. Witness the perfect alignment of the sunrise and the monument.

Stonehenge

The prehistoric rocks of Stonehenge, England, are world-famous. Some sources estimate that this place was actually used between 3700 and 1600 BC. Declared an official UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986, this architecturally sophisticated circle of stones remains a mystery. No one fully understands the significance of the location. Still, the mysterious monument reveals evidence of both Bronze and Neolithic Age mortuary and ceremonial practices.

The Stone Circles of Avebury

The famous Neolithic stone circles of Avebury in southwest England can be found 18.5 miles (nearly 30 kilometers) north of the famous Stonehenge in Wiltshire. They are reported to be the world’s largest prehistoric stone circles and important to contemporary pagans. UNESCO states that this huge henge indicates “the outstanding engineering skills which were used to create masterpieces of earthen and megalithic architecture.”

Silbury Hill

Not far from the above-mentioned stone circles of Avebury, is Silbury Hill. At 131 feet (40 meters) high, Silbury Hill is Europe’s largest prehistoric mound. While the actual purpose of the mound is still unclear, it was built roughly between 2400 and 2300 BC. They built it in 15 distinct phases. Archaeologists think the builders were focused not on the final shape but instead on their ritual of construction.

Glastonbury Tor

The Tor overlooks Glastonbury, in England. It is essentially a conical hill that is topped by an ancient roofless tower. The tower’s actually the vestige of a church from the 1300s erected on the actual ruins of a previous church. Some historians believe this may have been the myth-enshrouded Avalon where King Arthur’s sword, the fabled Excalibur, was forged. Archaeologists know this site was inhabited long before the historic Middle Ages.

The Carnac Stones

Located in Brittany, France, the mysterious exceptionally dense Carnac stones are almost 6,000 years old. More specifically, this monument consists of over 3,000 prehistoric stones that were carved from local granite and stood up by pre-Celtic residents. Most are in Carnac, but others are technically in La Trinité-sur-Mer. Why would thousands of stones have been lined up in descending size across 2,6 miles (almost 4 kilometers)?

The Externsteine of the Teutoburg Forest

The famous Teutoburg Forest is found in Germany. It is here that one can discover an important part of old Germanic history. Here you can see the Externsteine which is a group of standing sandstone pillars formed many years ago. Some researchers think this place was a solar observatory and others believe it to be a pagan place of worship.

The Giants of Easter Island

These mysterious monuments are found on a remote island off the beautiful coast of Chile. The residents of Easter Island created the huge stone figures and ceremonial platforms between the 10th and the 16th century. The massive busts are known as moai. UNESCO notes that there are about 900. To this day, researchers wonder about their significance, how they were created and how they were moved.

Uluru

The sandstone monolith is in Australia. It is 22,000 years old and overlooks a rugged plain. This 1,148-foot (350-meter) rock is said by veteran visitors to be exceptionally beautiful at sunset when it suddenly has a crimson glow. The Indigenous population considers the rock to be sacred and thus visitors are asked to not climb on it.

Mount Tai

According to UNESCO Mount Tai “was the object of an imperial cult for nearly 2,000 years” and “symbolizes ancient Chinese civilizations and beliefs.” Perhaps this is why it is one of the five mountains China deems to be sacred. The mountain’s ecosystem remains well-balanced despite the fact that millions of visitors climb 4,921 feet (1,500 meters) annually to reach the summit.

Notre-Dame de Paris

The world-renowned medieval Catholic Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in France has an air of mystery to it that has been a source of inspiration for animation, novels, songs and more. It recently celebrated its 850th anniversary and even weathered a major fire. Some historians still wonder about the symbolism of the numerous carved stone sculptures along its famous façade.

Mausoleum of the Qin Emperor

It was here near the city of Xi’an, China in 1974 when the famous army of terra-cotta warriors was discovered. They date back to 210 BC when they were created to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di, in the afterlife. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, this tomb makes one wonder if each terra-cotta warrior actually represents a real soldier.

The Anasazi Cliff Dwellings

In the southwestern US between the first century BC and 15th century AD, the Native American Anasazi constructed their dwellings in the sides of cliffs. Archaeologists find the precarious location intriguing and remain uncertain as to why the ancient Anasazi suddenly abandoned their homes. Was it a drought, environmental degradation, or some other danger?

The Yonaguni Monument

Just 98 feet (30 meters) off the undersea coast of Japan’s Yonaguni Island, is the underwater pyramid. Discovered in 1985, today it is known to some as the “Yonaguni Submarine Ruins” while others call this stone pyramid “Japan’s Atlantis.” To date, this submerged pyramid-like formation still remains a mystery.

Many people travel all over the world for their love of architecture.  Some say it is an art that is “appreciated by many” but “perfected by” a previous few.  Some may claim that constructing a residence takes not only imagination but craftsmanship.  (Of course, architects rarely build the actual building themselves but you get the point.)

We did some research and took a good look at the world’s most incredible buildings.  We chose and charted the top 30 of the most beautiful buildings in the world.  Check them out and let us know how many of them you have already visited.

30.  Château de Chambord, France

Situated in Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France, the famous Château de Chambord is one of the most recognizable châteaux on the planet.  This is mainly due to its quite distinctive architecture.  It combines classical Renaissance structures with traditional French medieval forms.

Construction went on for 28 years.  The building was never actually completed.  It was originally a hunting lodge for King Francis I.  Reportedly designed by Italian architect Domenico da Cortana, Leonardo da Vinci was rumored to be involved too.

29.  Berlin Cathedral, Germany

The official name of the Berlin Cathedral is the Evangelical Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church.  It is ensconced on the well-known Museum Island located in the Mitte borough.  The building travelers visit today was finished in 1905. 

It is also said to be one of the most significant Historicist architectural works of Germany’s “Kaiserzeit.”  This structure actually consists of four buildings that were constructed on different dates between the year 1451 and 1905.  The most recent renovations occurred in 1993.

28.  Westminster Abbey, United Kingdom

The large mostly Gothic church Westminster Abbey is situated in Westminster, London, England just west of the famous Palace of Westminster.  It was once named the Collegiate Church of St. Peter at Westminster.  Unfortunately, it lost its official abbey or cathedral around 1560.
Once a Benedictine monastic church, it is now an official “Royal Peculiar” church that is responsible only to the sovereign.  It is the official burial site and coronation location for British monarchs.

27.  Catherine Palace, Russia

This stunning Rococo palace is situated in the city of Tsarskoye Selo which is less than 19 miles (30 kilometers) south of famous St. Petersburg.  It is one of the city’s main attractions too.  Indeed, this grandiose building was built in 1717 as a summer home for such Russian tsars as Catherine I.  On the roof you will see gleaming statues made of 100 kilograms of gold.  Veteran visitors can confirm that you must not miss the Amber Room.

26.  Paro Taktsang, Bhutan

Opened in 1692, Paro Taktsang is a famous site considered sacred by the Buddhists.  The actual temple complex is ensconced within the upper Paro Valley cliffside.  Also known as the Tiger’s Nest, this Himalayan monastery is also pretty close to the popular Taktsang Senge Samdup cave.  It was here that the locals claim a guru meditated for a total of “three years, three months, three days, and three hours” in the 700s.  This guru is credited for introducing the Buddhist faith to the country and the monastery was dedicated to him.

25.  St. Peter’s Basilica, Italy

Located in Vatican City, this is where Saint Peter, Rome’s first bishop and one of Jesus Christ’s twelve apostles, was buried.  Many visitors are actually unaware that this church is not the Diocese of Rome.  It is also not the official “mother church of Catholicism.”  Nevertheless, it is the world’s largest church and reportedly Christendom’s “most important” one.  A number of Popes have been buried there because of its legendary connection to Jesus Christ.

24.  Bourges Cathedral, France

Located in the city of Bourges, the Bourges Cathedral is a popular Roman Catholic church.  It is the official seat of Bourges’ Archbishop.  The church is also dedicated to Saint Stephen. 
The original building was constructed over a period of 35 years (from 1195 to 1230).  It features both Romanesque and Gothic styles of architecture.  What travelers actually see today, however, is largely a replacement.  The remains of the original structure can be viewed inside the crypt of the current church.

23.  Big Ben, United Kingdom

Big Ben is the nickname of both the giant clock and the clocktower located at the palace of Westminster’s north end.  This famous tourist site in London, England was once known only as the Clock Tower.  English folks celebrated the neo-gothic tower’s 150th anniversary in 2009.  In 2012 it was officially rechristened the Elizabeth Tower as a way of celebrating the official Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.  Big Ben remains a “must see” for anyone traveling to London.

22.  Vienna Opera House, Austria

As part of Vienna’s expansion plans, this Neo-Renaissance building was erected in 1869.  The designer was the popular Czech architect Josef Hlávka.  Originally known as the Vienna Court Opera, the Vienna State Opera is a famous opera house and company based located in Vienna. 
In 1920, the First Austrian Republic replaced the Habsburg Monarchy.  One of the changes put into place was to rename the opera house the Vienna State Opera.  The famous Vienna Philharmonic recruits its members from the opera house’s orchestra.

21.  Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, Russia

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is located in St. Petersburg within the Peter and Paul Fortress.  It is a Russian Orthodox cathedral and the first and oldest landmark in the city of St. Petersburg.  Both the fortress and the actual cathedral were constructed between 1712 and 1733.
The designer was Domenico Trezzini.  He was working under the direction of ruler Peter the Great.  This is also the home of the world’s tallest orthodox belfry or bell tower.  It is 122 meters (over 400 feet) high.

20.  Hagia Sophia, Turkey

Construction of the well-known Hagia Sophia occurred in several phases.  It all began in 537 AD.  It was originally a Greek Orthodox Christian cathedral.  During the Ottoman Empire, the cathedral was converted to a mosque. 
At present, the building is a popular museum.  It’s home, Istanbul, also went through a lot of changes.  It has been named Augusta Antonia, Byzantium, Constantinople, Lygos, New Rome, and more.  It’s most famous for its huge dome and Byzantine architecture.

19.  Potala Palace, China

Today the Potala Palace is an official UNESCO World Heritage Site and a museum.  Situated in Lhasa, Tibet, China, this was once the home of the legendary Dalai Lama prior to the infamous  Tibetan uprising back in the 1950s.  The palace took its name from Mount Potalaka.  Mount Potalaka is the mythical residence of the  bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, who reportedly “encompasses the compassion of all Buddhas.”  In English the word Potala would be “brilliance.”

18.  The Cologne Cathedral, Germany

This Catholic cathedral found in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia is the country’s most popular tourist attraction.  Also, the official seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, over 20,000 tourists explore the building every day.  Construction on this medieval marvel started in 1248 but was halted in 1473.
Construction would not resume until some time in 1840.  The cathedral would not actually be finished until 1880.  Today it is the home of the Three Kings or Three Wise Men relics.

17.  The Eiffel Tower, France

Ensconced on the famous Champ de Mars in Paris, this famous French icon is a wrought-iron lattice tower.  It was erected in 1889 and meant to serve as the marker for the main entrance for the World’s Fair that year.  It was designed by Gustave Eiffel.
Immediately after it was finished it became the object of derision of both the French intelligentsia and Paris art community.  It was supposed to be torn down two decades after the fair.  Eiffel argued the structure had a scientific purpose so city officials decided to let it stand.  Today it is the city’s most popular tourist attraction.

16.  Angkor Wat, Southeast Asia

The temple complex Angkor Wat (in English “City of Temples”) was constructed circa 1125.  Located in Cambodia it is one of the planet’s biggest religious monuments.  The Khmer Empire (eighth to 15th centuries CE) intended it to be a Hindu temple that was specifically dedicated to the god Vishnu.  The stone temple’s architecture is a distinctive blend of both galleried temple and temple-mountain styles.  (Both were relatively new at that time.)

15.  The Parthenon, Greece

This was once a temple on the famous Athenian Acropolis.  It was built in honor of the Greek Goddess of Strategy who was the legendary patron of the residents of Athens.  Ground was broken in 447 BC at the peak of the Athenian Empire’s power.
It was finished in 438 BC.  Decorations and additions went on until some time in 432 BC.  During the Persian invasion, the original monument was actually destroyed and the Parthenon replaced it.

14.  The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, Spain

Similar to the above-mentioned Château de Chambord, this Roman Catholic church in Barcelona is also technically incomplete.  Construction on this place of worship started in 1882.  Financial limitations limited the progress of the work.  The infamous Spanish Civil War brought a stop to the construction.  Although the work is still not officially complete as this goes to press, the structure is still quite beautiful.

13.  Sacré-Cœur, France

In English, the name of this structure is “sacred heart.”  Thus the building is essentially the “Sacred Heart of Paris.”  It is a minor basilica and Roman Catholic church and was built in memory of the socialist Paris Commune of 1871 and the losses suffered during the Franco-Prussian War.  It is located at Paris’ highest point on the Montmartre butte.  From here you can enjoy a stunning view of the city.

12.  Florence Cathedral, Italy

The full name of this cathedral is the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore.  In English, it is “Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower.”  Ground was broken on this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Florence in 1296.
It would be 140 years before it would be finished.  The structure was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio.  The bricked dome of the building, however, was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi.  It is the largest of its kind on the planet.

11.  City of Petra, Jordan

Petra was founded by the Nabataeans possibly as long ago as 9,000 BC.  It was probably born of its closeness to the ancient Incense trade route which once ran from the popular Levant through India and Arabia.  At one point it was home to almost 20,000 people.  In 306 AD an earthquake devastated the city and it was abandoned.  It was rediscovered in 1812.

10.  Notre-Dame de Paris, France

Notre-Dame de Paris (in English “Our Lady of Paris”) took about a century to build.  Construction ran from 1160 to 1260.  It is considered by many to be perhaps the very best example of  French Gothic Architecture in the world.  Much of the original structure was destroyed during the French Revolution.  Renovations would not begin until 1831 following the publication of Victor Hugo’s famous The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

9.  Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Russia

The construction on Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square in Moscow was initiated in 1555 by none other than the infamous Ivan the Terrible.  First known as the Trinity Church, it included a total of eight churches surrounding a ninth with a tenth one added later.  Its design is unique with domes that some have previously described as “a bonfire rising to the sky.”

8.  Machu Picchu, Peru

Situated in the rugged Andes Mountains, Machi Picchu is undoubtedly the most famous Inca archaeological site on the planet.  It was erected in 1450 but totally abandoned in 1550 because of the Spanish Conquest.  This is also a popular UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It includes the well-known ritual stone known as Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows.  It was restored in the 1980s.

7.  The Louvre Palace, France

The Louvre Palace is can be found on the Right Bank of the well-known Seine in Paris.  Erected in 1202 as a medieval fortress, it is between the olden church of Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois and the beautiful Tuileries Gardens. In the 1300s Charles V converted it into a palace.  It was next used as the Paris residence of the later kings of France.  In 1793 it was turned into a museum and opened to the public.

6.  The Hungarian Parliament Building, Hungary

Completed in 1906, the Hungarian Parliament Building is located in Kossuth Square on the bank of the famous Danube in the Pest side of Budapest.  It required 100,000 workers almost two decades to build this popular landmark and tourist attraction.  They used 40 million bricks, 88 pounds of gold and 500,000 assorted precious stones.  It’s definitely a “must see.”

5.  Mont Saint-Michel Castle, France

The Mont Saint-Michel Castle in Normandy is found amidst a unique representation of the feudal system.  Society’s lowest level is represented by the homes of the farmers and fishermen.  The monastery and abbey represent God.  The castle has survived the Hundred Years’ War.  King Louis XI later converted it to a prison.  It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Roughly 50 people still live there.

4.  Milan Cathedral Duomo, Italy

Completed in 1965, the Milan Cathedral Duomo to nearly 600 years to complete.  The first basilica was constructed in 355 but was terribly damaged in a fire in 1075.  This cathedral replaced it and is the fourth largest church on the planet.  It is centrally located in Lombardy.  Tourists take note that all the local streets either circle or originate from this site.

3.  The Palace Of Versailles, France

Less than 20 kilometers (12+ miles) southwest of the heart of Paris, is the Palace of Versailles.  Louis XIV moved into the place in 1682.  He lived there until the famous French Revolution in 1789.  The palace includes the royal apartments an opera, a private park, a canal, gardens, flower beds and the Hall of Mirrors.  It was trashed in the French Revolution and later restored.

2.  Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

Located in southwest Bavaria, The Neuschwanstein Castle was commissioned by Ludwig II, the King of Bavaria, in 1869.  He paid for it from his own personal fortune.  He died in 1886 before construction was actually completed.  The architectural style, called “castle romanticism”, was inspired by a pair of castles that Ludwig thought were reminiscent of the Middle Ages.

1.  The Taj Mahal, India

In English, the name “Taj Mahal” translates to “Crown of the Palaces.”  Found in the city of Agra, ground was broken in 1632.  Construction took 21 years.  The cost to build it was 32 million rupees or the equivalent of 8 hundred million dollars at that time.gardens and a partially-surrounding crenelated wall.  The work was overseen by a group of architects headed up by Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.

Bornholm, Denmark

Las Médulas, Spain

Las Médulas is a historic Spanish gold mining site.  It is located close to Ponferrada in the comarca of El Bierzo. It was also once Spain’s most important gold mine and the largest open-pit gold mine in all of the Roman Empire.  Its unusual shape is due to the specific mining techniques the ancient Romans used to mine gold from the mountains.

Water is essential to life. Without it, we cannot exist. Perhaps that is one reason why we have an interest in it. Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is fortunate enough to live near a lake, river, or ocean.

5.  Jet D’eau, Switzerland

Jet D’eau (“Water Jet” in English) is one of Geneva’s famous icons.  Situated on the lakefront, it reaches an impressive height of 140 meters ( over 459 feet).  The fountain’s water is pumped out at a surprising speed of 200 kilometers (over 124 miles) per hour.

A total of seven tons worth of water is propelled into the air.  This fountain is also lit at night.  You can even walk out onto the jetty from which the fountain actually spews.  Just be careful or you will most certainly get an unexpected drenching if you stay too long to pose for pictures.

6.  Magic Fountain Of Montjuic, Spain

The Magic Fountain Of Montjuic is situated in Barcelona.  It was built in 1929 specifically for the Universal Exhibition.  In the 1980s the fountain was not only restored but it was given extra features including music, lighting, and special effects that make it look as if the water is actually dancing.

Officials report that literally thousands of travelers are drawn here on weekend nights to see the show.  The spectacle includes  3,620 water jets in 50 colors.  Some of the jets shoot high into the sky to the sound of pop or classical music.

7.  The People’s Friendship Fountain, Russia

The restored People’s Friendship Fountain in Moscow is one of the few reminders of the now “late” USSR.  Ensconced outside the All-Russian Exhibition Center, it includes 16 large gilded sculptures of residents wearing the costumes of the different republics that once formed the Soviet Union.  It also has 800 jets shooting 24 meters into the air prior to splashing down into a red, flower-shaped granite bowl.

Still, the truth is you do not always have to actually visit a museum to see great artwork. Sometimes you can see great artwork just walking down the street or strolling through a park. 10. The London Ink Swimmer

Located on the south bank of the famous River Thames between the iconic Tower Bridge and City Hall, you’ll find the London Ink Swimmer. This huge sculpture is 10 feet high and 46 feet long. This life-like swimmer who appears to be swimming through the very grass was actually commissioned by the reality TV show known as London Ink.

A major tourist draw and a local favorite, this statue of a swimmer required the work of as many as 800 sculptors. It was constructed out of a specially reinforced polystyrene. Reportedly, a few funny things happened in the planning and creating of this giant sculpture. In fact, at one point early on, as many as 200 of the creators did not know that the sculpted swimmer was supposed to be partially in the grass.

9. Maman Or Louise Bourgeois’ Spider

Also referred to by many as “the Spider”, Maman is a famous work of art by artist Louise Bourgeois. Indeed, the sculpture does look like an arachnid so no one should be surprised by its popular, unofficial nickname. Maman is French for mother. This mother spider is one of the largest in the world.

It is more than 30 feet tall and more than 33 feet in width. It includes a large sac with 26 marble eggs. Its thorax and abdomen are actually rubbed bronze. Bourgeois created this particular sculpture as part of her first commissioned project of the well-known Unilever Series back in 1999 for the world-famous Tate Modern’s huge Turbine Hall.

Situated in the town of Monywa in Myanmar, this reclining Buddha sculpture is actually hollow. Visitors can actually stroll through the 300-foot long tourist attraction. Inside you can take in 9,000 little images of the Buddha as well as his disciples.

As this goes to press, the Monywa Buddha is the world’s largest reclining Buddha. Believe it or not, that could soon change. A reclining Buddha of stone is being completed in the Jiangxi Province of east China. It will be 416 meters (1,365 feet) long.

2. Die Badende, Germany

This giant sculpture in Hamburg Germany really makes waves. Die Badende, in English “The Bather”, is a humorous giant sculpture by German artist Oliver Voss and is now said to be located in Binnenalster Lake. Made of steel and foam, it is roughly 13 feet tall between 67 and 99 feet in length.

It weighs over two tons. The work shows a woman’s knees and head poking out of the water. In 2011 it was briefly on display in Inner Alster Lake. This atmospheric tunnel of beech trees is located on Bregagh Road between the villages of Stranocum and Armoy in County Antrim.  It was made famous from its use in the popular HBO television show Game of Thrones.

2.  ‘Cherry Blossom Avenue’, Germany

Back in the 1980s,  the Heerstrasse in Bonn was planted with Japanese cherry blossom trees.  Now, this Nordstadt neighborhood is known as “Cherry Blossom Avenue.”  It’s beautiful pink boughs can be seen spreading out over the old cobblestone streets near the Beethoven House.   

3.  Wisteria Flower Tunnel, Japan

You’ll find this colorful tunnel in the city of Kitakyushu in the Kawachi Fuji Garden.  Here, roughly six hours out of Tokyo, you’ll discover 150 flowering Wisteria plants from at least 20 different species.  Try to see it between late April and mid-May.

4.  Oak Alley, Louisiana

Oak Alley is near Oak Alley Plantation on the outskirts of New Orleans, Louisiana.  This alleyway along the mighty Mississippi River is still comparatively unknown to typical tourists.  Nevertheless, this quiet, enchanting spot is fast becoming an iconic one, especially with photo buffs.

5.  Jacarandas Walk, South Africa

The Jacarandas Walk in Pretoria, South Africa includes over 70,000 Jacaranda trees.  Many varieties of this native South American plant were imported to South Africa over a century ago.  The best time to visit is in October when they erupt in pretty purple-blue.

6.  Tunnel of Love, Ukraine

Not to be confused with the 1987 Bruce Springsteen song, this Tunnel of Love is a special stretch of industrial railway outside of Klevan.  It’s surrounded by lush green arches and has become a fave pic place for couples.

7.  Street in Jerez, Spain

This is a street in the historic city of Jerez de la Frontera (or Jerez).  Near famous for its vineyards, many of the streets here are shaded by grape leaves from vines that climb the buildings’ walls.

8.  Ginkgo Tree Tunnel, Japan

In Tokyo, there are 65,000 ginkgo trees lining the streets.  They are referred to as “the bearers of hope” because a number of the trees survived the Hiroshima bombing.  This tree tunnel is in the garden of the famous Meiji Shrine.

9.  Blossom Path, Japan

You can enjoy this amazing view in more than one place be it Kyoto, Japan or even San Francisco, California.  This blossom path is part of what’s called a Sakura alley.  Cherry tree flowers are also known as Sakura flowers.

10.  Bamboo Path, Japan

This path can be found in a grove in Kyoto.  It’s both aesthetic and peaceful.  Bamboo, of course, is a giant, exotic grass that is a fascinating part of Japanese culture.  It has great potential as a truly “green” resource.

11.  Maple Tree Tunnel, U.S.A.

If you want to stroll down this particular tree tunnel you will have to visit the city of St. Louis in Oregon.  Some claim this is one of the prettiest places in the US.

As previously noted in an earlier entry, another name for cherry blossoms is Sakura blossoms.  Veteran visitors report that this Sakura tunnel, located in Japan, is particularly magical in the mist of morning.

13.  Tree Tunnel in The Netherlands

If you think this tree tunnel is a spot you’d like to see in person then you’ll have to buy a ticket to The Netherlands.  Once there you’ll need to head to the Old Grove.

14.  Autumn Tree Tunnel, U.S.A.

This tunnel, also known to some as the Misty Tree Tunnel is also in the city of St. Louis, Oregon.  Some sources state it’s one of the most gorgeous tree tunnels in the world.

15.  Laburnum Tunnel, UK

The Laburnum Tunnel is situated in the Bodnant Gardens in Wales.  It bursts into colorful life in late spring complete with a lively cascade of yellows.  The entrepreneur Henry Davis Pochin designed the gardens in the late 1800s.

The Parque Francisco Alvarado, located in the city Zarcero, is one of Costa Rica’s most popular attractions.  The numerous unique topiary shapes and figures have been delighting tourists for roughly half a century.

17.  The Footpath To Halnaker Windmill, England

Known as Mill Lane, this public path can be found in the South Downs National Park in the hamlet of Halnaker in West Sussex.  It follows an ancient trail along Stane Street.

18.  Cypress Tree Tunnel At The Marconi Wireless Station, U.S.A.

This tunnel is located about 45 miles north of the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco,  California.  When you reach the end you’ll see the famous historic RCA/Marconi Station.

19.  Gyeonghwa Station, South Korea

The little Gyeonghwa Station in Jinhae is a world-famous place to see cherry blossoms.  Services at this station were discontinued back in 2006.  Travelers now come here just to take in the beauty of this site.
