This is a 12-kilometer out-and-back hike. It is rated strenuous and has an elevation gain of 570 meters. Allow yourself between six and eight hours to complete it.

For those not in the know, Kjeragbolten is an enormous boulder wedged between a pair of cliffs. Many people favor it because this adventure allows you the opportunity to do something really wild. You get a chance to actually step out onto the huge boulder.

3. The Eiger Trail, Switzerland

Travel to the Jungfrau Region to complete this 7.25-kilometer point-to-point hike. Rated easy to moderate, it has an elevation gain of 140 meters as you ascend and 800 meters as you descend. You will need at least two if not three hours for this hike.

Some hikers say this is one of their favorite short hikes on the continent. The trail follows Eiger Mountain’s north face. Enjoy the incredible views all the way ‘cross the lush Lauterbrunnen Valley to Grindelwald and Mürren.

Most of this hike is actually downhill so that will help beginners and anyone who is not exactly super fit as well. You can even do this hike when you visit Jungfraujoch.

While there are a number of different day hikes to do here, this loop hike actually combines two hikes into one noteworthy day hike. See the colorful rhyolite mountains, the warm, welcoming geothermal hot springs, the popular lava fields, and, of course, the distinctive hiking trails. 

Adventurous travelers are drawn to this place all summer long. You begin at Blue Peak or Mt. Blahnúkúr. In the end, you are able to see some of the very best views of local Landmannalaugar.

Hiking the Ladder of Kotor provides incredible views of the beautiful Bay of Kotor. Ah, but be aware that this is an almost 13-kilometer hike in total and it is rated as strenuous. You will need between three and six hours.

The trailhead is right next to the popular Old Town of Kotor and immediately becomes an uphill climb. There are more than 70 switchbacks but experienced hikers suggest not counting them. Best to focus on the fact that the higher you hike, the more striking the view. Once you reach the top, you can go back the way you came or hike the Kotor castle walls back to the bottom.

8. Hike Schynige Platte to Faulhorn to First, Switzerland

You will need to visit the Jungfrau Region to complete this beautiful 16-kilometer point-to-point hike. Mind you, while some hikers and travel writers consider this a favorite trek to take, it is rated as strenuous, has an ascent of 860 meters, and has a descent of 690 meters. Give yourself a good six hours to complete this worthy challenge.

For those not in the know, Montserrat is a rugged mountain range located in Catalonia. In fact, the word “Montserrat” is roughly “saw mountain” in Catalan. It is thus named because the range has a sawtooth-like appearance.

This day hike is a point-to-point hike with a distance of five kilometers. It is moderately difficult and requires less than two hours to complete. If you’re staying in Barcelona, you can take a train to the area and then either take another train into the mountains, ride a cable car, or hike up on foot.

If you’re feeling athletic enough, hike to the monastery. The hike there is relatively short and quite memorable. Feeling even more energetic? Hike to Sant Jeroni or the Santa Cova Chapel too!

10. The Måtind & the Stave-Bleik Coastal Trail, Norway

Visit Northern Norway’s unique Vesteralen Islands, not far away from the well-known Lofoten Islands. Here you can enjoy one of Europe’s most underrated hikes. The Stave-Bleik Coastal Trail follows the coastline. The hike is an almost eight-kilometer out-and-back hike that’s rated easy to moderate.  

It includes an ascent of 520 meters that will take between three and four hours to complete. Too many travel lovers pay little attention to Senja and the Vesteralen Islands and spend all their time in the popular Lofoten Islands. The Vesteralen Islands are more peaceful, significantly less touristy, and come complete with their own lovely, lush landscapes. Måtind is actually the highest spot along the coast and thus offers the best views there.

11. Hike Cinque Terre, Italy

Just north of Pisa, on Italy’s coastline, is a group of five individual pastel-colored towns known as The Cinque Terre. Each town overlooking the harbor offers visitors its own something special. Hiking this 11-kilometer trail, a.k.a. The Blue Trail is a great way to explore this place.  

Some portions are paved, some unpaved, and some require climbing up and over natural terrain. So the hike is rated easy to moderate. It connects Riomaggiore to Monterosso al Mare and requires more than five hours to finish and additional time to explore a little. 12. Hike To The Green Lake & Vel’ká Svišt’ovka, Slovakia

Slovakia’s High Tatras is another noteworthy European hiking destination. More specifically, this day hike to the summit of the famous Vel’ká Svišt’ovka is a 13+ kilometer point-to-point hike. It is a moderately difficult hike with an ascent of 365 meters and a descent of 1,200 meters and requires from six to eight hours to finish.

This terrific trek features emerald-green lakes, jagged mountains, and even a cable car. Taking the cable car eliminates the initial major ascent. Still, the downhill section is difficult and requires chains. Plus, it is also a long walk through the pine forest on a rocky, rough, uneven trail to get back to town.

13. The Hveradalir Geothermal Area Hike, Iceland

Head to the Kerlingarfjöll mountain range in the central highlands. For it is here you will enjoy a memorable 11.5-kilometer out-and-back hike. It is reported to be moderately difficult and requires four if not five hours.

Here you will discover the hot spot known as Hveradalir. It is a geothermal natural wonderland of boiling mud pools, rainbow-tinted hot springs, rust-colored mountains, and steam vents. If you happen to be staying at the renowned Kerlingarfjöll Mountain Resort, you can actually either hike or drive to the exceptional Hveradalir Geothermal Area. Of course, hiking out and back gives you the chance to see the multiple changes in terrain up close.

14. The Mürren Via Ferrata Hike, Switzerland

While you’re in the Jungfrau Region to hike that other previously recommended hiking trail, you might as well try this day hike too! It is over 2 kilometers one way, moderately difficult, and has an elevation loss of 300 meters. This is a three-hour hike.

It is one of the shortest hikes in Europe but it is also one of the most exciting on the continent. Those in the know say this hike is actually “part hiking trail” and “part via ferrata.” (A via ferrata is a protected climbing route.) Here you will hike, climb down notably steep ladders, cling to a rugged cliff, cross a suspension bridge, and zip line across a deep ravine.

15. Hike Fira to Oia, Greece

The Greek island of Santorini is popular for many reasons. If you’re a hiker, hiking from Fira to Oia is yet another reason to visit here. It’s a 10-kilometer point-to-point moderately difficult hike that will require between three to five hours.

On this popular day hike, you will trek along a caldera’s rim, visit the little towns of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigili, and Oia, and take in some of the best views here. The trail you’ll travel is a mix of dirt hiking trails and paved, pedestrian roads. You can hike it from either end, but if you go from Fira to Oia it’s mainly a downhill hike and you can see the town’s nigh-legendary sunset.

16. The Hiorthfjellet Hike, Norway

Travel to the Norwegian archipelago named Svalbard. Located in the Arctic Ocean, it is here you will complete a strenuous adventure including over five kilometers of kayaking and almost nine kilometers of hiking. Set aside a good 11 hours for this athletic event in this remote location.

It all begins in Svalbard’s largest settlement known as Longyearbyen. Here reindeer wander around town, there are more snowmobiles than residents, and the streets have no name. From here you kayak ‘cross Adventfjord and hike to the very summit of rugged Hiorthfjellet. If you want to avoid snow, best visit before the end of June.

17. Hike Gornergrat to Riffelsee & Riffelberg, Switzerland

This next day hike is available in Zermatt. It’s an easy, five-kilometer point-to-point day hike that should only take an hour and a half to finish. This is one of those spectacular treks that requires little effort. Enjoy truly epic views of the world-famous Matterhorn as you go, provided the weather is nice.  

Your journey begins in Gornergrat where you will find Europe’s highest open-air railway. See the Alps’ second largest glacier, Gorner Glacier, and Dufourspitze, the highest peak in Switzerland. This day hike is in Zakopane. Zakopane is actually the country’s gateway into the popular Tatras. It is a strenuous 18 kilometer loop hike with an ascent of 1,310 meters.

It all begins at the Skógafoss Waterfall. From there you hike along the Skógá River. Once you near the ice caps, the lush green grass disappears. Have a (Thunder)ball at James Bond Beach

You won’t need to drive a silver Aston Martin DB5 to reach this famous beach cove outside of Ocho Rios. Indeed, ever since 1962 when Sean Connery met the beauteous bikini-dressed Ursula Andress on the pristine sand of Oracabessa Bay, this attractive narrow cove has been referred to as James Bond Beach. Fringed with clusters of mangroves and pleasing palm trees, it fairly glistens as the sun reflects off the turquoise shore.

Get chills from the White Witch of Rose Hall

There is a controversial past behind the pretty facade of the former plantation known as Rose Hall. Here on the outskirts of popular Montego Bay, shrouded by dark green gardens and untouched rainforest, this property is a reminder of both slavery and European colonial domination. What’s more, it is also haunted!

Here travelers can go ghost hunting for the nigh-legendary ghost of Annie Palmer. Palmer was actually a Haitian-British settler who allegedly murdered multiple husbands in the mansion. While you’re in Kingston, be sure to see the Bob Marley Museum. It is actually situated inside the late reggae star’s former residence. (It’s also where he was almost murdered in 1976.)

Delve into the Green Grotto Caves

You will discover the Green Grotto Caves hidden ‘neath thick jungle undergrowth on the north shore. This group of underground tunnels and caverns has two levels and has a rich and interesting history. Next, smugglers used them as ammo dumps during the Spanish invasions in the 17th century. Reggae Beach is a comparatively small beach between the coves halfway between Oracabessa and Ocho Rios and the Jamaican jungle. It is praised as an alternative, off-the-tourist-route seaside locale. Before bringing your trip to a close you really must enjoy one at friendly Floyd’s Pelican Bar in Parottee Bay roughly half a mile from Treasure Beach around Black River. It almost appears to be precariously perched on old stilts of sea salt-soaked wood above the reefs and aquamarine water.  

Have no fear of floating out to sea though as this driftwood and bamboo bar is actually anchored by a little sandbar. Accessible only by sea vessel, this hot spot serves up all the expected rum punch mixers and local cold Red Stripe lager you can drink and then some. The bar staff is always smiling and the views of the surrounding Caribbean are, of course, awesome. No wonder some sources say it’s Jamaica’s “most iconic drinking joint.”

Chuuk Lagoon, Oceania

Venetian Lagoon, Italy 

The Venetian Lagoon runs from the rushing Sile (River) in northern Italy to the Brenta (River) in the south. It has a total water surface area of almost 550 square kilometers. It is the Mediterranean Basin’s most significant wetland.  

As the name implies, this lagoon is mainly located in Venice. Historically, it was once just a part of an entire system of estuarine lagoons from Roman times that once ran from Trieste to Ravenna. The lagoon is joined to the Adriatic Sea by a trio of individual inlets.

Not to be confused with the fictional lagoon of motion picture fame, this manmade Blue Lagoon located not far from the fishing town of Grindavik in a lava field in front of the volcanic mountain named Mount Þorbjörn on Iceland’s well-known Reykjanes Peninsula is very real. 1. The Argo Gede Train Railroad, Indonesia

The Argo Gede Train Railroad is located in Indonesia. The line runs from Bandung to Jakarta. It is one of the highest routes in the country and travels across the well-known Chikurtung pylon trestle bridge. No matter when you board this train, the ride will make the short hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.  

Get goosebumps as you experience the magnificent sheer drop in the subtropical valley. The sights are fascinating. The bridge itself is not fenced. Engineers claim this doesn’t make your ride unsafe and yet you will probably strongly object to their determination.  

Indeed, there have been several accidents in the past. The most significant one reportedly took place back in 2002 when the train actually derailed. Luckily, not a single passenger was injured.

The Bamboo Trains, Cambodia

The various train routes here in Cambodia were originally built by the French. Most of them, however, were wrecked under the infamous Khmer Rouge Regime. Eventually, residents began using these “bamboo train routes”, as they became known, via handmade carts. Since becoming a tourist attraction, the majority of the carts have actually been fortified. So don’t stress!

The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe Train, South Africa

The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe Train made its first run in 1928. It was actually the only “remaining continuously operated passenger train” on the entire African continent until it shut down operations in 2009. The three-hour route connected the Western Cape towns of Knysna Nestle and George.  

The route stopped in other cities and the majority of the scenic 67-kilometer route hugs the coastline of the gorgeous Garden Route prior to coming to an end at Knysna station. In 1992 it was declared a preserved railway. Originally carrying less than 40,000 passengers annually, it was transporting over 1,15,000 passengers each year by sometime in the 2000s.

70 percent of the train’s passengers were tourists. In 2010, Alan Winde, the Western Cape Provincial MEC for Finance, Economic Development, and Tourism, said he was determined to keep the line operational. Last September, there were two companies competing to manage the train.

The Minamiaso Railway Takamori Line, Japan

The Takamori Line is one of Japan’s most dangerous railway routes running through the Kumamoto Prefecture. It is also the only train line that runs between Miniamiaso’s Tateno Station and Takamori Station, in Takamori and crosses the southern section of Mount Aso Caldera. Its two most well-known train stations are reportedly Minamiaso Mizu no Umareru Sato Hakusui Kogen station and Chōjagahamashiosaihamanasukōenmae Station. 

An earthquake in 2016 temporarily shut down the entire line. As this goes to press, several stations remain closed. It will cost as much as seven billion yen to complete all the restorations and repairs.

The Death Railway, Thailand

Also known as the Burma Railway, and the Thai-Burma Railway, the Death Railway has a total distance of 415 kilometers and runs between Thanbyuzayat, Burma (now known as Myanmar), and Ban Pong in Thailand. It was built in 1943 by the emperor of Japan. Its main purpose was to support the military forces in the infamous Burma campaign of World War II.

In fact, forced labor was used to build this railway. Online sources report that somewhere between 180,000 and 250,000 Asian civilians and more than 60,000 Allied P.O.W.s (prisoners of war) were forced to finish this route. Approximately 90,000 civilians and over 12,000 Allied prisoners died during the construction.

It was shut down in 1947. Roughly a decade later, one portion between Nong Pla Duk and Nam Tok was reopened. The section still used today is only 130 kilometers long. While the Thailand-based company has considered rebuilding the entire line since sometime in the 1990s, as of 2021 no work has begun.

The Chennai Rameshwaram Route, India

The municipality of Rameshwaram in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Pamban Island is connected to the mainland by the Pamban Bridge. Construction on this railway bridge began in 1914. It is 12.5 meters above sea level and was India’s first sea bridge.

With a total length of 2,065 meters, it was also the longest one in the country prior to the opening of the Bandra-Worli Bridge, now known as the Rajiv Gandhi sea link, in 2010. This bridge rests on concrete piers and includes a standard double-leaf bascule middle section, which is raised to permit ships to pass. It was the sole surface transport joining the island to the mainland until 1988 when a road bridge, Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge, was built parallel to this railway bridge. It joins the NH 49 highway with the island.

Tren A Las Nubes, Argentina

Tren A Las Nubes, a.k.a. “train to the clouds”, is a train service specifically for tourists. Originally based in the province of Salta, it ran 4,220 meters above mean sea level making it the fifth-highest railway in the world. It traveled along the eastern portion of the C-14 or Salta-Antofagasta railway line, which joins the northwestern section of the country with the Chilean portion of the Andes Mountains.     

It was closed for nine months in 2014. That summer a train went off the tracks close to Abra Munano at a height of 4,000 meters. Almost 400 passengers were evacuated. Much of the track has since been restored although the government more recently began running the heritage railway out of San Antonio de los Cobres.

The Pilatus Railway, Switzerland

You will need both courage and strong, steady innards to ride the Pilatus railway route that connects the village of Alpanch and Mount Pilatus. It is reported to be the world’s steepest rack railway with an average gradient of 35 percent and a maximum gradient of 48 percent. The train route has an altitude of roughly 2000 meters running through the route’s most dangerous slopes, and a length of nearly 4.7 kilometers. During the trip, the train climbs nearly 1600 meters which is why people consider it dangerous. Only 32 passengers can ride the train at one time.

Maeklong Railway, Thailand

Come on, ride the train for almost 65 kilometers between Samut Songkhram, Bangkok, and Wongwian Yai in Thailand. With a total of 33 train stations, it consists of two sections separated at Samut Sakhon by the Than Chin River.  

Part of the route runs dangerously through the Maeklong Railway Market. This is one of the country’s biggest fresh seafood markets and it is nicknamed Talat Rom Hup, in English the “umbrella pulldown market.” This unique and hazardous market is unbelievably centered on the railroad tracks.  

People selling their wares, be they fresh fruit, vegetables, or fish, actually sit right on the tracks! There are no signals on the tracks either. Nevertheless, when the train approaches, the vendors move their umbrella awnings and little shop fronts back from the rails and then put them back once the train passes.  

Luckily for both vendors and customers alike, this train is one of the slowest in the entire country. The average speed for the line is just 30 kilometers per hour. Be careful about haggling with the merchants here though or you could end up being run over by a train before you both agree on a price.

Landwasser Viaduct, Switzerland

If you have a fear of heights, you may need to skip this dangerous train trip. This railway track was erected on Switzerland’s Landwasser river in 1901. The journey here begins in a hilly area. The railway is supported by pillars that are 65 meters high.

This route is also more than 9200 meters above sea level. It runs through a dense, verdant forest and previous passengers say that it is “pretty scary” because riding on this train often makes you feel as if the train is flying through the air. Cueva de los Cristales, Mexico

Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil

The name of this attraction in Maranhao translates to “bedsheets of Maranhao.” To be fair, these pristine coastal dunes swaying along 600 square miles of shoreline actually do resemble bed sheets. The Preguicas and Parnaiba Rivers carry sand from within Brazil to the ocean, and the currents and winds blow inland, sending the sand to the shore. Cavernas de Marmol, Chile 

The Cavernas de Marmol, a.k.a. the Marble Cathedral. Is located in Lake General Carrera. The caves here are accessible only by boat and are found close to the Argentina-Chile border.

The Red Seabeach, China

El Nido is the gorgeous gateway to the Philippines’ beautiful Bacuit Archipelago and is located in the pretty province of Palawan under 420 kilometers from Manila. Indeed, there are more than 50 different beaches here and El Nido supposedly inspired Alex Garland’s 1996 novel The Beach. Lord Howe Island, Australia

Some travel bloggers claim that the main reason you probably have not heard of this beautiful island found 375 miles off of New South Wales is because there is no cellphone signal on the exceptional isle. Thus, the two main attractions here are the obvious digital detox and the wildlife. Because it is such an isolated spot, you will find species of birds, plants, and insects that do not exist anywhere else on the planet.  

The island itself is close to a coral reef, so this is a great place to go snorkeling and scuba diving too. Don’t worry about crowds either. Only 400 visitors are permitted here at one time.

Homebush Bay, Australia 

You might think Sydney is a comparatively unremarkable residential bay, but it slots in on this list for the sea vessel near its coastline. Christened the SS Ayrfield, this ship was constructed during World War I. It carried supplies to US troops in the Pacific Ocean during WWII and in the 1950s was purchased by an oil company and anchored in this bay.

The Crystal Cave, Iceland

You will find this beautiful place in Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park. The 22-foot entryway on the shoreline may mislead you. The blue-crystal cave itself actually tapers downward to no more than four feet. It will actually pop and crack as you enter.  

Fret not though, fellow traveler, as it is not an indication of an imminent collapse. It is simply the sound of the glacier moving slightly against the volcanic island. It was created over centuries and has an almost unreal look to it too. Picos de Europa, Spain

1. The Blue Lake, New Zealand

New Zealand is famous for its abundant natural beauty. The moment you leave any city there, you are surrounded by lovely lakes and memorable mountainous terrains. Ah, but New Zealand is also known as the country with the world’s clearest lake. Blue Lake’s visibility depth is between 70 and 80 meters (roughly 230 to 260 feet).  

This lake is also the world’s “clearest body of natural freshwater.” Experts report Blue Lake’s water is similar to distilled water. Researchers who have studied the lake say its clarity is due to a specific underground passage that filters the water as it comes in from Lake Constance. That’s also why its natural color, blue-violet, shows through here.

Lake McKenzie, Australia

Australia’s Lake McKenzie, a.k.a. the “Jewel of the Fraser Island,” is so clear you can see your reflection in it. This is a popular perched lake. It was formed by sand slowly cementing aluminum, iron, and assorted organic matter into an individual layer of material above actual sea level.
