Jet D’eau (“Water Jet” in English) is one of Geneva’s famous icons.  Situated on the lakefront, it reaches an impressive height of 140 meters ( over 459 feet).  The fountain’s water is pumped out at a surprising speed of 200 kilometers (over 124 miles) per hour.

A total of seven tons worth of water is propelled into the air.  This fountain is also lit at night.  You can even walk out onto the jetty from which the fountain actually spews.  Just be careful or you will most certainly get an unexpected drenching if you stay too long to pose for pictures.

6.  Magic Fountain Of Montjuic, Spain

The Magic Fountain Of Montjuic is situated in Barcelona.  It was built in 1929 specifically for the Universal Exhibition.  In the 1980s the fountain was not only restored but it was given extra features including music, lighting, and special effects that make it look as if the water is actually dancing.

Officials report that literally thousands of travelers are drawn here on weekend nights to see the show.  The spectacle includes  3,620 water jets in 50 colors.  Some of the jets shoot high into the sky to the sound of pop or classical music.

Five Jumeirah Village Dubai

This place, opening in August, will include 271 swimming pools situated on garden terraces that will provide guests with panoramic views of the skyline. Five came up with this new, design in-house. It’s now registered in 168 nations. The building is a 60-story hotel and apartment building.

The design focuses on the earth and water elements of the company’s brand. It will include 33 four-bedroom apartments, 221 one- and two-bedroom flats, and 247 hotel suites and rooms.

Mandarin Oriental Jumeira

This beachfront hotel, designed by Jeffrey Wilkes, will open by May this year. It’s the city’s first MO hotel. The place is highlighted by chic, California-impacted aesthetics. It’s six new lounges and restaurants include Portuguese chef Jose Avillez’ first international restaurant named Tasca. It will also include the Japanese steakhouse Netsu from restaurateur and Nobu-trained chef Ross Shonhan. There’s also a 6,651+ -square-foot spa where guests can enjoy a Nomadic Sensory Journey, which includes Emirati drumming as part of the process.

Taj JLT and Taj Exotica Resort & Spa

Opening dates are sketchy but everything will be ready by the end of the year. The Vivanta by Taj in Jumeirah Lakes Towers will reportedly be the first in the Middle East and could be first of the new Taj properties to open. There’ll also be the five-star, 325-room, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa located on Palm Jumeirah. India’s Taj Group already operates two locations in Dubai including the popular Taj Dubai near the famous Burj Khalifa.

W Dubai – The Palm

By the time you read this, the W Dubai-The Palm will probably be open. This seven-floor, pet-friendly place will include 350 suites and guest rooms. It will also include the Latin American-inspired SoBe rooftop bar, a hopeful hotspot called the Wet Deck and a pair of impressive new restaurants. There will be Italian restaurateur Massimo Bottura’s Torno Subito and an eponymous eatery from Iron Chef Akira Back who specialized in Japanese cuisine with a unique Korean twist.

Grand Plaza Movenpick Media City

Scheduled for a grand opening on March first, this reportedly five-star hotel is situated in the very center of Internet and Dubai Media Cities. This hotel boasts noteworthy views of both the Emirates Golf Club and the famous Palm Jumeirah. There will be 235 suites and rooms, and half a dozen new places to eat and drink. More specifically, this will include the Twenty-Three Rooftop Bar, The Neighborhood Deli, and the popular all-day dining place known as Slice.

Radisson Hotel, Dubai Damac Hills

This new hotel, found in the well-known Trump International Golf Club, will officially open its door to travelers shortly before the close of the year. This Radisson Hotel here will be highlighted by a pair of restaurants. A kids’ club, a spa, an outdoor pool and 481 one and two-bedroom accommodations.

Waldorf Astoria DIFC

The Waldorf Astoria DIFC (in the Dubai International Financial Centre) will welcome guests in a matter of days. Located on the Burj Daman building’s 18th through 55th floors, it has a memorable decor reminiscent of New York in the early 1960s. The guest rooms feature brass pieces and neutral colors. The Waldorf Astoria DIFC will also include a variety of lounges and restaurants with both outdoor and indoor seating. Dine at the Bull & Bear prime steakhouse then have a cocktail at the St. Trop rooftop bar.

The St Regis Dubai – The Palm and the St Regis Beach Club

This 18-floor deluxe hotel, opening next year, is found in the Nakheel Mall-adjacent Palm Tower. Highlighted by a rooftop infinity pool on the 50th floor, it will also feature a restaurant complex and a viewing deck. Guests will also be able to visit the new St Regis Beach Club, in the Palm West Beach complex complete with dining, fitness and leisure facilities opening late next year. (The other areas of the tower open in 2020.)

Restaurants & bars

Alici Fans of fine food can expect memorable meals here at Alici. The specialties of the house are all dishes drawn from the Amalfi Coast and southern Italy. This soon-to-be-opening eatery will also include seasonal menus, cool Mediterranean-inspired interior decor and great views of the sea. This new venue on Bluewaters Island is being launched by the same creative people who successfully brought you Jumeirah Al Naseem’s Il Borro Tuscan Bistro.

Indya by Vineet

The first chef in the world to score a Michelin star for Indian cuisine, Vineet Bhatia, will soon be opening his second location in Dubai at the well-known Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa. His original Indego by Vineet is already popular for both its fine food and individualistic vibe. Still, this new location is reportedly going to give Indian street food “a whole new meaning.” It will offer diners contemporary takes of classic dishes all presented in a “colorful . . . and eclectic backdrop.”

Marea

Although no specific date has been announced as this goes to press, the restaurateurs of New York’s two-Michelin-starred high-end hot spot Marea will open another establishment in the earlier-mentioned Dubai International Financial Centre. Their Italian menu was put together by the famous chef Michael White. The edible offerings will blend the swaggering style of the Big Apple with the tastes of Italy’s coast that will present “the best of the sea.”

Restaurants at The Pointe

Most of the activity venues and shops are already open in Palm Jumeirah’s newest entertainment and leisure hub. But wait! There’s still more to come! In fact, there are numerous restaurants on the way including the Argentina Grill, a Bareburger, the Egyptian eatery Dar Elkamar, the seafood spot Hook & Cook, La Bella Vita gelato, and even The Kasap Turkish Cuisine.

This club is an extension of one of the most well-known in Lebanon. It is supposed to open early this year. The famous Beirut rooftop bar debuted in 2003. Since that day celebs such as Tinie Tempah and Nicole Scherzinger have helped make it a must-stop on any visitor’s party planner. This second location, situated in the design district, is touted as an exciting UAE version designed along similar lines as the original.

O Beach Ibiza

This is a recently relaunched Spanish “punto caliente” will open in the fall. Found on Ibiza’s west coast, this beautiful beach resort is famous for stuns by aerial artists, world-renowned disc jockeys, and celebrity parties by the pool. Candypants already holds several events there so that bodes well for any potential UAE team-ups. (No specific location has been publicly announced at press time.)

Arts & entertainment Dubai Arena

Opening in Dubai’s City Walk some time this year, this will be the area’s biggest indoor arena capable of holding 17,000 spectators. It can handle anything from live concerts to sports events. The roof I watertight and allows for exceptional acoustics. The team behind the construction of the arena believe that the venue will put Dubai on the map in terms of international entertainment. The powers that be hope to have some of the most talented individuals in the world perform right there in the center of Dubai.

The Arts Club

The Arts Club is the UK’s most well-known private club. Founded in 1863, this institution once had Charles Dickens as a member. Lt will open a new branch in the ICD Brookfield development in the DIFC. It is reputed to offer a safe haven for anyone with even just an amateur interest in a haven for anyone who has a professional or amateur interest in the arts, sciences, or literature. The Dubai location will span five floors and feature a cigar club, a business center, exhibition spaces, three bars and restaurants, and a rooftop terrace.

Retail Festival Plaza

This year there will be yet another reason to go see Jebel Ali. The new shopping mall, Festival Plaza, will be opening its doors to customers before the close of 2019. There will be 40 cafes and restaurants, a 50-seat food court, 120 stores, and 2,310 parking spaces. There will also be one of India’s PVR Cinemas and Dubai’s second Ikea store open there too.

Nakheel Mall

There is no official grand opening date yet for this shopping mall but it will be open sometime this year. Found on the artificial archipelago Palm Jumeirah, this mall will feature 350 stores, eateries, and entertaining attractions spread out over a total of five floors. There will also be 4,000 parking spaces on three parking levels and a new monorail station. The roof plaza, complete with numerous restaurants, will also provide access to the viewing deck of The Palm Tower.

The Night Market at Deira Islands

The rebranded Deira Night Souk could soon be the largest night market on the planet. The market will feature 5,300 quayside cafes, restaurants, and shops. It will include a modern version of a traditional Arabian souk and run nearly 2 kilometers (1.18+ miles) along the local waterfront. It took up-and-coming Emirati entrepreneurs but one week to lease out the new market. An unidentified spokesperson for this business venture said it is unifying a brand “new generation of local traders” at what’s reportedly “Dubai’s oldest, most traditional business hub.” It will open later this year.

Cityland Mall

This 205,000- square-meter (672,573-square foot) mall will include 15 movie screens, 75 eateries, over 350 shops, and 6,000 covered parking spaces. There will also be an 18,600-square-meter (61024-foot) open-air garden christened “Central Park”. Within Central Park, there will be a water park, a tree garden with 300-year old trees, a Japanese-like garden, a small Miracle Garden; a walking track, and a lush, green rooftop section which will include multiple cafes and restaurants from which travelers will be able to enjoy the view. The adjacent Global Village center will have an amphitheater that can seat 3,000 spectators and a smaller theatre for children as well. As this goes to press no specific launch date has been announced. The Cityland Group has confirmed, however, it will be some time this year. The company is also planning to build a similar mall in both Al Ain and Abu Dhabi too.

Mastercard recently released its yearly Global Destination Cities Index. The index measures the amount of travel or visitor volume to and throughout 162 cities across the globe. Scored by the projected amount of international visitors, here are the most visited cities in the world in 2018.

20. Bali, Indonesia

The Indonesian province of Bali has 8.43 million international visitors annually. It’s the westernmost island of the popular Lesser Sunda Islands. The province includes the neighboring, smaller isles of Nusa Ceningan, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Penida. Bali is famous for its exotic foods, noteworthy markets, beautiful waters, and unique wildlife. 6. Ring Racer Nurburgring Motor Sports Complex, Germany

Opened in 2013, This formula-one themed roller coaster was originally meant to run parallel to a Grand Prix track. It can reach up to 135 m.p.h. In only 2.5 seconds. It has hit 99.4 m.p.h. In under two seconds and stands 123 feet high. The ride lasts for one minute and 25 seconds. In 2014 they stopped working to make it faster because it was not cost-effective. No specific rider height requirements were noted.

5. Superman: Escape from Krypton Six Flags Magic Mountain Park, California, U.S.

This ride is a real steel shuttle roller coaster in Valencia.  It has the power to go from 0 to 100 m.p.h. in only seven seconds thanks to its linear synchronous motors. It rises to 415 feet and gives passengers a momentary feeling of weightlessness. Problems stalled the original 1996 launch date. It was renovated and backward facing trains were added. It opened in 2011 with a ride duration time of under one minute. To fly with Superman you must be at least 4.5 feet tall.

4. Dodonpa Fuji-Q Highland Amusement Park, Yamanashi, Japan

Japan’s fastest roller coaster can hit 107 m.p.h. In 1.8 seconds. At this speed, passengers will experience a temporary sense of floating. It travels almost three-quarters of a mile in only 55 seconds (the duration of the ride). Officially opened in 2001, it held the title of
world’s fastest coaster until 2003 when it was booted down by the Top Thrill Dragster in the U.S. It reaches a height of 171 feet. Passengers must be at least 4.27 feet tall.

3. Top Thrill Dragster Cedar Point, Ohio, U.S.

This is not only the official second fastest roller coaster in the U.S., it’s also the official first strata coaster on the planet. It’s a true complete circuit roller coaster and stands at 420 feet. In just four seconds it goes from 0 to 120 m.p.h. It rises to a height of 412 feet. The ride includes a 90-degree incline and a memorable 270-degree descending twist. The ride lasts for only 30 seconds. Riders must stand between 4.33 and 6.5 feet tall.

2. Kingda Ka Six Flags Great Adventure, New Jersey, U.S.

You must be at least 4.5 feet tall to ride the official fastest roller coaster in the U.S. This 456-foot tall ride has a special hydraulic launch mechanism that ensures the coaster reaches 128 m.p.h. in only 3.5 seconds. At one point the ride drops 418 feet straight down at a 270-degree angle. Sorry, but you won’t be able to board the official world’s fastest roller coaster if you’re under 4.26 feet. The ride’s theme is a tribute to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy. The coaster has four trains and four passenger cars. When the ride starts, it climbs to a height of 71 feet and hits 150 m.p.h. In a mere five seconds. That speed is actually 4.8 times faster than being in free fall. All in all, the ride, covers close to 1.37 miles in 1.32 minutes.
