1. The Bamboo Forest, Maui

The Bamboo Forest is located along the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakala National Park on the Road to Hana on the island of Maui. The trail is roughly four miles in length but will take you to both the Waimoku Falls and Makahiku Falls. The forest is densely packed with trees that provide visitors with both shade and atmosphere. 

Here insects whirl and clack and birds twitter. For safety reasons, avoid swimming at the top or bottom of the falls. Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic scene seen only by those willing to make the hike.

2. Kawela Bay, Oahu

Kawela Bay is a secluded beach nestled near Oahu’s northern tip. The area is protected by the North Shore Community Land Trust in accordance with the wishes of local residents. As this goes to press, it remains relatively undeveloped despite previously proposed development plans.

It is highlighted by unique banyan trees and has even appeared in such feature films as The Hunger Games: Catching Fires and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It’s a great place to reconnect with nature and avoid crowds. Here you can picnic, paddleboard, and swim if you don’t mind access to few facilities.

3. The Kalalau Trail, Kauai

The well-known Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile-long trail that leads along the striking Na Pali Coast on the island of Kauai. It is a challenging, remote, rugged yet exceptionally beautiful trail. In fact, hiking parts of this trail requires a permit, and going with a guide is recommended. You will discover a number of superb waterfalls and sublime beaches such as the somewhat secluded and cozy Kalalau Beach, a.k.a. the Secret Beach. You are only allowed to camp along this trail in two places. There are composting toilets, but no seating areas, or potable water.

4. The Sanju Pagoda, Oahu

You will find this three-level structure on the isle of Oahu in Honolulu Memorial Park. It is a large replica of the revered Minami Hoke-ji Temple located in Nara, Japan.  The building stands 119 feet high and features fine Japanese designs.

The structure is built out of concrete, not wood. It is also in the official National Register of Historic Places. It dates back to 1966 and is actually one of the tallest temples in the country, perhaps even the world. Currently unsafe to enter, but you can still appreciate it from the outside.

5. Raëlian UFO Peace Park, Big Island

The distinctive Raëlian UFO Peace Park is a unique sculpture park located in Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Here you’ll see several different sculptures and a model of an unusual galactic embassy the Raelian UFO religious group wants to build there. The Raelian religion, founded by Claude “Ral” Vorilhon, believes life here was created by aliens known as the Elohim. The main sculpture is a large nude woman with the official Raelian symbol on her chest. There are also sculptures of chameleons, native birds, peacocks, and a sea turtle too.

6. Keahiakawelo, Lanai

Also called the Garden of the Gods, Keahiakawelo, also known as the Garden of the Gods, is a group of noteworthy natural rock formations on Lanai. Here the reddish, arid earth is dotted with various shapes and sizes of boulders. It’s speculated that previous visitors created these tiny towers and designs.

Local legend warns that visitors who tamper with these stones risk the wrath of ancient gods. Others note that two men from Lanai and Molokai were competing to see who could keep a fire burning the longest. Their efforts to win created this place.

7. Harold L. Lyon Arboretum, Oahu

This hidden gem in Honolulu is actually named after the ex-director of the Hawaii Sugar Planters’ Association who also studied plant diseases. Tourists typically come to this area to see the Manoa Falls and often ignore this fertile, lush garden. Thus, this is a great place to get off the beaten path especially if you are at all interested in plants and nature. It’s admittedly not the place for fun with beach blanket Barbie, but there’s something visually attractive about the rounded, smooth pieces of multi-colored glass that are strewn across the basalt rocks here. These pretty pebble-like pieces of glass accumulated on this beach are the result of the ebb and flow of ocean waves smoothing and removing the sharp edges of broken bottles and other glass discarded in the area.

9. The Kaumana Lava Tubes, Big Island

Close to Hilo, the intriguing Kaumana Lava Tubes are a comparatively unknown hidden gem on the popular Big Island. These tubes are the result of hot volcanic lava forcefully flowing through the earth. Travel writers report that the tubes here are actually more natural and authentic than other more commercialized tubes elsewhere. The tubes can be explored, but there are no official guides here, so you are solely responsible for your own safety. If you want to deeply explore these caverns, you’ll need a flashlight. 10. The Coco Palms Resort, Kauai

If you appreciate history and tradition, visit the famous Coco Palms Resort in Wailua. This resort was the first resort on the entire island. It opened back in the 1950s and played host to such famous folks as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. This once pricey and opulent place was the preferred playground for the day’s rich and famous. In 1992 it was trashed by Hurricane Iniki and more recently damaged by a fire. Now ruined, the building’s shell has yet to be razed because the demolition plans remain in legal limbo due to disputes over land ownership.

12. The Island Of Niihau

Travel back through the mists of time to this peculiar prehistoric landscape of odd stone sand dunes. Yes, here hidden by the cliffs close to Koloa, you will actually see stone sand dunes. Indeed, originally made of sand, these dunes went through the process of lithification.  

In other words, over time the sand dunes were compacted by pressure, lost their porosity, and turned to stone. Today, they present an olden, otherworldly, striking sand-colored contrast to the blue of the sea. Hike here or rent a 4WD vehicle as the road here is in pretty bad shape!  

15. The Waimanu Valley, Big Island

The Waimanu Valley is a hidden gem and Hamakua Coast’s largest valley. Tourists avoid it because the journey there includes a nine-mile hike. The Muliwai Trail takes you by splashing cascades and picturesque streams.

The path can become quite slick so be sure to pack trekking poles with your other hiking equipment. You should also reserve a camping spot in advance. The black sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing and the crystal-clear water is good for swimming. The views are stunning with a lush valley on one side and water on the other.

16. The Makauwahi Cave, Kauai

The Makauwahi Cave is an under-visited hidden gem. It is also one of the island’s largest caves. The cave covers the subjects of archeology, history, and, of course, nature.  

Here you’ll discover fascinating fossils that’ll give you a glimpse into the island’s past. Like some ancient diary, the cave’s layers tell a tale of Kauai’s history. Explore this sinkhole, formed from the inward collapse of a fantastic fossilized sand dune.  

Study plant and animal fossils that were here before man. Visit Mahaulepu Beach too. It was a shooting location for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

17. Ching’s Pond, Maui

Also popularly known as the Blue Sapphire Pools, Ching’s Pond is hidden from the road. This is a popular, local hangout and while it is quiet on weekdays, it is often crowded on the weekends. The bubbly Palauhulu Stream gently flows through here beneath a bridge.

Below that bridge, you will spot some striking sapphire pools. It’s so pretty you’d almost think fairies and nymphs live here. There are but two hiking trails to reach this spot. The less challenging trail is marked by a big tree just 50 feet from the bridge.

18. The Kau Desert, Big Island

Hawaii’s Big Island is home to the expansive Kau Desert. This lunar-like landscape includes a natural floor of gravel, sand, and volcanic ash dotted with boulders and solidified lava. The desolate landscape is almost completely devoid of wildlife and green plants.  

The rain that does fall on this torrid terrain is generally too acidic to be beneficial. The water droplets in the air mix with the sulfur dioxide from the various volcanic vents here to create toxic rain. Hikers who plan on braving this place should remember that if the volcanoes are too active, the trails may be closed.

The critically-acclaimed Vintage Cave Club is said to be one of the most luxurious (albeit costly) restaurants in the state. Still, if you win the lottery and want to spoil yourself, this is one place to do it.  

It offers distinctive dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant includes a well-stocked bar and wine cellar, and walls adorned with artwork by Picasso, Anton Molnar, and others.

20. Lanai Cat Sanctuary, Lanai

“What’s new pussycat?” If you like cuddly cats, the Lanai Cat Sanctuary is the purr-fect place for you. Here you will find 500 former furry feline strays that have finally found a home at this 25,000-foot furball refuge.

Opened in 2009, this serval sanctuary was founded to rescue and protect unwanted cats and provide them with a safe place to live. By protecting pussies, the sanctuary also aids in the survival of another animal, the ua’u bird. You can come here, play with the local lynxes, lend a paw, and even make a donation.    

21. The Pineapple Garden Maze, Oahu

Visit the famous Dole Pineapple Plantation and lose yourself in the popular Pineapple Garden Maze. Those in the know report that this is the largest plant maze on the planet. This pineapple puzzle features 14,000 plants, spans an area of two acres, and includes two and a half miles’ worth of paths. Naturally, some paths lead nowhere, and others are intentionally designed to mislead and confuse people trying to make it through the maze. There’s more than one way out, though, so don’t stress about being lost in the labyrinth forever.  

22. The Hindu Himalayan Academy, Kauai

A visit to the Hindu Himalayan Academy might make you feel like you’re in some foreign land like Tibet or Nepal. Ah, but rather than the majestic Himalayan Mountains, the academy is in the heart of a tropical landscape. This memorable monastery was founded by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami. It is a peaceful place where Western ways and Polynesian costumes merge with assorted Eastern religions. This sanctuary serves as both a “global outreach” and a Hindu education center that follows the teachings of numerous gurus from southern India and Sri Lanka.

23. Shangri La, Oahu

In this case, the literary-inspired name Shangri La concerns a “hidden” collection of interesting Islamic art that focuses on Hinduism and Islam. Philanthropist Doris Duke is the founder of this collection found outside of Honolulu. Shangri La was once Duke’s official Hawaiian hideaway.

She designed it inspired by her international travels. Here you can see embroideries, paintings, and sculptures that she collected from various places over a number of years. The building overlooks the ocean. It includes an Iranian-style pavilion and a big saltwater pool too.

24. The Blue Room, Kauai

The Blue Room in Hawaii is another amazing natural wonder here in Hawaii. You’ll find this hidden gem in the beautiful Waikapalae wet cave situated in Kauai. The Blue Room is “hidden” in the back of a cavern entrance and is thus named because it shines with a shade of deep blue when the level of the water is high enough.

Historic Liljestrand House was constructed over half a century ago. The Liljestrand couple’s former residence remains an extraordinary example of American-Russian architect, Vladimir Ossipoff’s modernist work. If you’re looking to avoid the major tourist attractions and would prefer some soft sand, summer breeze, and relaxing, rhythmic waves, then get ready to take notes, fellow travelers.

According to a recent Tripadvisor survey of 2,330 travel lovers in half a dozen countries, 60 percent of said travelers are “very likely” to take a trip to the beach sometime this year. The following list of “best beaches” is actually based on website reviews, traveler ratings, and (to a much lesser degree) our personal picks. Yes, recent events are still impacting travel in several different ways, and beaches may not yet be offering visitors all the otherwise expected amenities, as this goes to press things are improving on a daily basis. Here then, are the top 10 US beaches, starting with number 10.

Kailua Beach Park, Kailua, Hawaii

As expected, the popular tropical paradise of Hawaii slots in five times on our top ten chart. Coming in at number 10, is the breathtakingly beautiful Kailua Beach Park on your rovin’ writer’s birthplace, the island of Oahu. The park spans 30 acres and includes a two-mile-long beach and a green, grassy picnic area, a boat ramp, volleyball court, and even a few food stands. This is a longtime favorite vacation spot for ex-President Barack Obama who often rented this huge home near here.

Madeira Beach, Madeira Beach, Florida

You will find this rather relaxed beach on the gleaming Gulf of Mexico just west of St. Petersburg. This two-and-a-half-mile-long beach is especially popular with sand strollers and sun-worshippers. It is also a hot spot for fishermen. Indeed, experts report that more grouper is actually caught right here than in any other place in the entire state. This place is famous for holding the yearly John’s Pass Seafood Festival which is highlighted by live music and, of course, fresh seafood dishes.

Wai’anapanapa State Park, Hana, Hawaii

See the volcano-born black sand here on this otherworldly, rather remote on the idyllic isle of Maui. Keep an eye on the tide pools that actually turn red several times throughout the year. Researchers discovered the crimson coloring is caused by the coming of certain small shrimp. A more interesting local legend, however, has it that it is the fresh blood of a princess that was murdered there. A tan and a torrid tale. What more could you want from an island vacation?

Ogunquit Beach, Ogunquit, Maine

This beach is aptly named since “Ogunquit” is native Algonquin for “beautiful place by the sea.” The beach stretches for three-and-a-half miles and comes complete with soft white sand and gentle lazy surf. If you’re so inclined you can wade out literally hundreds of feet in the waist-high water at high tide. Leave your car keys in your room. You can take a leisurely stroll along pretty Marginal Way to a picturesque place called Perkins Cove.

There is nothing like doing nothing on Napili Beach in lovely Lahaina on the isle of Maui. Here you will find a nice little natural reef that is teeming with marine life. You can also climb aboard for a whale-watching cruise that leaves from popular Lahaina Harbor. If you are single but are seeking a romantic place to propose, this could very well be it.

Cannon Beach, Cannon Beach, Oregon

One of the highlights of eye-catching Cannon Beach is rugged Haystack Rock. It’s an impressive, 35-foot-high sea stack, and unsurprisingly a well-known Oregon landmark. You can get a good look at the tide pools and other sea creatures at low tide. If you get too much sun on this scenic beach then go on a nice day trip and check out scenic Seaside. It has fun candy shops, a fun carousel, and an educational aquarium too.

Your rovin’ writer recommends Moonstone Beach in cozy Cambria. This beach’s name isn’t an advertising gimmick. This outstanding spot situated in striking San Simeon State Park was actually named after the pretty moonstones that often wash ashore here.  

If you care to walk off your dinner for two before retiring to your room, there is also a nice, mile-long boardwalk to stroll along hand in hand. Into nature? Go study the tide pools, or watch for whales, otters, and dolphins as well.

Ka’anapali Beach, Lahaina, Hawaii

Our runner-up takes us back to the island of Maui again. For it is here that you will discover Ka’anapali Beach. It is not only a popular choice of frequent flyers but also has a significant history. Indeed, this very beach was once the number one choice of Hawaiian royalty looking to get away from it all.

This incredible beach features three full miles of white sand and sparkling water. 10. Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland

This rugged route runs along the Atlantic coast from Londonderry to Belfast for a total of 212 kilometers. Here you’ll find beaches, famous Game of Thrones shooting locations, fishing villages, rope bridges, and more. See the Gobbins cliff walk on the huge basalt cliffs of the Islandmagee peninsula for over a century.

Another “must-see” is the famous geological UNESCO world heritage site known as the Giant’s Causeway. Legend has it that these 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns form a stairway created by an Irish giant looking to do battle with a Scottish giant.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

The Great Ocean Road is 400 kilometers in length. From center-city Melbourne, you can do the drive in about 90 minutes and see everything from Torquay to Nelson along the southern border. Take in the rainforests, rivers, and volcanoes too.

Highlights here include the stunning sea stack known as the 12 Apostles. Once joined to the cliffs of the mainland, these impressive, 45-meter high limestone pillars are the result of years and years of sculpting by winds and waves. In fact, there are presently only eight Apostles.

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

You’ll find Ha Long Bay in the Gulf of Tonkin about four hours out of the capital city of Hanoi. It includes more than 1,600 wild islands and islets. The bulk of them remains uninhabited.

This bay is one of the best things to see here. It’s a striking seascape of wave- and wind-eroded grottoes and towering limestone pillars. This Karst landscape is ideal and was born of a wet and warm tropical climate. That along with its biological elements earned it a slot on the UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1994.

Glacier Bay National Park, USA

This national park in the state of Alaska spans 3.3 million acres of deep sheltered fjords, dynamic glaciers, mighty mountains, verdant rainforest, and wild coastlines. Namibia’s Skeleton Coast is named after the bones that were once scattered along the shore because of the whaling industry. It is arguably one of the last great wildernesses on Earth. Milford Sound, New Zealand

Milford Sound is nestled deep in the heart of Fiordland National Park. Said by some to be the nation’s “most stunning natural attraction” is an official UNESCO World Heritage site, Author Rudyard Kipling once called it “the eighth wonder of the world.”

This breathtaking place was carved out by numerous glaciers back in the ice age. It is impressive any time of the year because the forested cliffs of the fiord rise out of the water regardless of the weather. See the waterfalls plunge from a height of up to 1000 meters. The frequent rain makes the falls even more memorable.

Big Sur, USA

Big Sur is a pristine, remote portion of the country’s system of scenic byways. The famous two-lane Pacific Coast Highway covers 90 miles. It’s bordered by San Simeon featuring the famous Hearst Castle, to the south, and Carmel to the north.

This narrow highway hugs California’s cliffs as it winds along the central coast high above the wildly crashing waves. Be sure to see the Bixby Bridge, and the Monterey Peninsula as well. This drive is considered by some to be among the world’s most scenic.

This is a popular tourist destination and said by many to also be the “most scenic coastline” in all of Europe. Speaking of spectacular coastlines, this 17-mile long stretch is located on Kauai’s North Shore. The area hasn’t changed much since Hawaiian settlements first appeared here.

Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard, South Africa

Mere minutes from busy downtown Cape Town, you’ll find this lush nature lover’s paradise. 1.  Na Pali State Park, Kauai

Hikers will enjoy the exceptional eleven-mile Kalalau Trail hike because it ends in a beautiful little spot for camping. If you’d rather not hike that far in one day, you can spend the night at a site six miles in if you have the proper paperwork. Pack light to optimize your experience whether you break up the hike or not!

Bellows Field Beach Park, Oahu

This park is found along an awesome expanse of windward beach reserved for military training during the week. But when the weekend comes, you have your choice of between 25 and 50 campsites. Sites are open as of high noon every Friday.

You can swim in the ocean all day and drift off to sleep to the sounds of the waves crashing upon the shore. Facilities include two comfort stations, outdoor showers, two lifeguard towers, and limited parking.

Kiholo State Park Reserve, Big Island

This is a coastal, work-in-progress, lava-covered spot located off a gravel access road. It includes bays, lava flows, and a lot of open space. This stark park has little more than restrooms and you will have to bring in your own water. Still, you can go fishing, hiking, snorkeling, and swimming, and the isolation will certainly make it a much better place to spot wildlife and enjoy nature.

Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area, Maui

This recreation area is located 6,200-feet above sea level. Unless you like the cold, it’s best not to camp here in the winter as the nighttime temperatures can reach freezing. The forests aren’t tropical but more reminiscent of the US Pacific Northwest. Although hunting is permitted here, it’s more appealing to hikers as there are four hiking trails here: The Haleakala Ridge Trail, the Plum Trail, the Polipoli Trail, and the Redwood Trail.

Koke’e State Park, Kauai

This state park is a picturesque place that is perhaps most popular for tent camping sleeping at an elevation of 4,000 feet on the rim of famous Waimea Canyon and seven different hiking trails. This is also a good place for exploring nature, hunting, and looking for wildlife. Amenities include restrooms, picnic tables, water fountains, and even a gift shop.

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, Oahu

Kalopa State Recreation Area, Big Island

You can camp out in a tent or even rent a duplex cabin here at this popular recreation area. The cabins sleep up to eight people. They include bunk beds, hot showers, toilet facilities, and even a recreational dining hall suitable for shared cooking. There are also picnic tables for outdoor dining, and the place is ADA accessible. This is also a good spot for hiking.

Pala’au State Park, Molokai

Here at this 233-acre state park, you can camp close to a great scenic overview of infamous Kalaupapa, the colony to which lepers were once banished. The main attraction here is Kaule O Nanahoa or “the phallus of Nanahoa.” It’s a sacred site that was once believed to increase fertility.  Hike the trail through the ironwood forest to visit Kalaupapa Lookout, and see Kalalupapa from 1000-feet up. Amenities here include a picnic pavilion and a restroom.

Anini Beach Park, Kauai

Even the locals love this beachside camping spot. The shallow water near the shore is good for wading if you avoid the sharp coral and rocks in some spots. This is an especially great place for snorkeling where you might even see the state fish—the triggerfish—or parrotfish or unicornfish. This is also a great place to windsurf. Unfortunately, with the wind often comes rain, so be sure to bring a durable tent.

Kea’au Beach Park, Oahu

Found near Waianae on the west shore of Oahu, Kea’au Beach Park, is a popular camping spot for visitors into blue water, striking sunsets, and nature. It includes picnic tables, restrooms, and showers. The campsite is grassy but near the ocean, it is reportedly a bit rocky. On the far north end of the park, you will find a large beach. Like the majority of the campsites here in Hawaii, a permit is required for camping.

Manuka State Wayside, Big Island

This lovely 13.4-acre park is situated in South Kona on the flank of Leeward Mauna Loa. It features an arboretum and a variety of habitats including mesic montane kipuka forests, lowland mesic forests, wet montane forests, and subalpine shrublands and forests. Relatively recent multiple lava flows have created some unsurveyed and uncharacterized lava tubes. These lava tubes make the hiking here even more interesting. Restrooms are available.

Wai’anapanapa State Park, Maui

Last but not least in Hawaii, Waianapanapa State Park offers not only tent camping but also rents cabins in a rather remote, locale on this low-cliffed, wild coastline. This one-of-a-kind state park is popular for shore fishing and hiking.

The well-known Manuka Nature Trail offers visitors a memorable two-mile nature hike through the neighboring Manuka Natural Area Reserve which offers an education in Hawaiian natural history. Some people say that this place can make you feel as if you’re in a fairytale.

1. Lanikai Beach, Hawaii

Lanikai Beach can be found in the community of Lanikai, in Kailua.  Many think the name means “heavenly sea” but that is not true.  It is a name created back in the 1920ʻs by Charles Frazier, a developer, who then owned beachfront property in the area that Native Hawaiians call Kaʻōhao.

This neighborhood beach gets a lot less traffic.  In fact, before you go to bask on the beautiful palm tree-bordered white sand, know there is no public parking, no restrooms, and no lifeguards.  Nevertheless, it’s a great spot for a more intimate dip in the ocean.

2. The Bahia Honda State Park, Florida

Although they are famous, the Florida Keys are not generally promoted for their beaches (beyond that one stretch of state park).  You will find the Bahia Honda State Park on the way to Key West.  Be sure to stop before you hit Big Pine Key.

Here you’ll find an awesome beach complete with coral reefs, balmy breezes, and decidedly stunning sunsets.  The water is bathwater temperature and perfect for both snorkeling and wading.  You might be in the USA, but it will feel like being in the Caribbean.

3. Bahia Súcia, Puerto Rico

It’s been said before but is worth repeating: “Go play at ‘Dirty Bay’.”  Bahia Sucia, also known as Dirty Bay, is on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico along Highway 301.  The name “Dirty Bay” merely refers to the fact that here the seaweed will wash up during a storm.  For the most part, you will find little more than beautiful blue skies, beige sloping sands, and azure water here.  Sure, technically this is part of the US.  Still, this place definitely has what veteran visitors call “a classic Caribbean feel.”

4. Indian Beach, Oregon

If you visit the area on any given summer weekend, you will no doubt see lines of vehicles parked along popular Cannon Beach.  Keep right on going.  Drive north into lovely Ecola State Park. You can hike two miles from the park’s parking lot or continue driving.  

Take in the scenery as you follow the road that winds through the Sitka spruce forest.  Just around the corner, you will find Indian Beach.  It’s a surprisingly secluded crescent beach.  Take a stroll, check out the tide pools, and look for driftwood,

5. Ocracoke Island, North Carolina

Seasoned travelers can confirm that  Ocracoke is a little island just off the coast of the state of North Carolina.  Mind you, they also report that nothing about the place is easy.  Still, people like it that way.  Once you reach the Atlantic Ocean you still have to ride the ferry across Pamlico Sound all the way to one of the southernmost of the humble Outer Banks islands. 

The best time to visit is any time but winter.  Foodies favor the fresh fish, figs, fig cakes, and annual fig festival.

6. Bound Brook Island, Massachusetts

If you’re heading for Cape Cod you really must experience Bound Brook Island.  Take a sandy little back road in Wellfleet to a quiet corner of the Cape Cod National Seashore.  Make your way to the historic Atwood-Higgins House.  

Less than a mile from there is a little parking lot.  From there it’s another several hundred yards before you reach your destination.  You’ll be rewarded with a cozy beach complete with towering sand dunes and exceptional views of the Atlantic Ocean.  Kick back and enjoy yourself.

7. Montaña de Oro State Park, California

This state park is located two miles south of Los Osos and six miles southwest of popular Morro Bay.  In English, the Spanish name Montaña de Oro means “Mountain of Gold.”  It was inspired by the park’s prevalent golden wildflowers. 

The park’s highlights include secluded coves and sweeping bluff views along seven miles of the most incredible coastline in San Luis Obispo’s often overlooked state park.  More recently, they have added a new trail from the park’s southern boundary to the intimate Coon Creek Beach.

8. St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, Florida

Stunning St. Joseph Peninsula State Park stretches across Cape San Blas’ six-mile tip.  You need not give up beautiful scenery to experience a quiet, secluded beach.  Here you will discover one of the country’s prettiest shorelines.  

The sugar-white sand dunes are nearly empty compared to the beaches in Destin and Panama City.  There are a lot of things to do here along this comparatively remote stretch of the glistening Gulf of Mexico coast.  They even have a boat ramp and marina that can host up to 18 boats at once.

9. Lumahai Beach, Hawaii

You might think that it is impossible to find a span of sand away from the crowds anywhere in Hawaii.  Lovely Lumahai Beach is located in the wet and wild North Shore on Kauai.  It’s off a little bend in the road up from famous Hanalei Bay. 

Take the trail down through all the trees. It ends at a little crescent of fine sand and a huge rock outcropping.  Film fans will find this place familiar.  This is where the “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” scene from the classic motion picture South Pacific was shot.

1. Subwing Diving

The apparatus is connected to a boat with a cable. The rider holds the wings as the boat moves slowly through the water. The wings can be adjusted to propel the rider up to the surface, deeper down into the water or even in a 360° roll. The rider must be able to hold his/her breath in between moves to the surface and keep holding on to the wings.

Next is flyboarding.  It was “born” in 2012. You strap your feet onto a special board that has water jets on it. You are tethered with a hose to the jetski.

Zorbing

One or two participants stand in the center of a huge, clear, inflatable plastic ball. The ball is pushed down a downhill course to roll down to the bottom. If you wish to go zorbing you can either be strapped into a harness and roll along with the giant ball.

The other option involves filling the ball with water so that you will move around inside the ball. The ball is called a zorb or an “OGO ball.” It was originally made to allow people to walk on water (similar to the ball in that 1971 James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever.

Cheese Rolling

The centuries-old, yearly cheese rolling competition is held in England in May outside of Gloucester. At present 2,000 people gather to 100 international competitors roll (not cut) the cheese. A nine-pound wheel of double Gloucester cheese is sent rolling down a rocky, steep hill.

Almost immediately after that, the cheese-loving participants chase it. The cheese is nearly impossible to catch since it speeds down the 200-yard hill at roughly 70 miles per hour. The first person to catch up to it at the bottom scores the cheese itself. Due to numerous past injuries, this is no longer an officially-managed competition.

Blobbing

This activity takes lake leaping to new (ahem) heights. Blobbing takes place on a huge inflatable raft that resembles a blob. You sit at one end of the blob while your partner onto the other end launching you up into the air and then into the water.

How high you’re sent into the air is influenced by the size of your partner. A larger jumper will send a smaller person higher. The best place to go blobbing at present is in the US state of West Virginia. They also have a 25-foot climbing mountain, an obstacle course, seesaws, and giant spinning balls too.

Explore under the sea without a snorkel or scuba gear. Take a voyage in a battery-powered submarine. You can safely travel 500 feet below the waves effortlessly. These submarines also have environmental advantages over diving and snorkeling too.

Finally, since ocean visitors are in a submarine there’s no chance that any sunscreen will damage the coral and ignorant people cannot cause harm by touching anything they simply should not touch. China’s the place to be! At least, if you want to strap on a harness and be shoved off a horrifically high cliff. It’s the latest thing in theme park attractions there. The most terrifying swing is located in the Wansheng Ordovician Park in Chongqing.

The harness is connected to a beam that is 60 feet high. Passengers are pulled backward face down at a 90-degree angle. Held only by the harness, they’re heaved out over a 1,000-foot drop. This park also features a 121+ meter (400-foot) high, 70-meter (229+feet) long cantilevered glass skywalk too.

If you’re not interested in scuba school, but want to go underwater try underwater scootering in Cancun or Hawaii. It combines slow-speed zooming and ocean exploration. These battery-powered, eco-friendly underwater scooters come with large helmets known as BOBS (breathing observation bubbles).

The helmet is connected by a tube to the air above the water. No tank or mask is required. The headgear is even big enough to provide almost 360-degree visibility.

You wear one while seated on the scooter. The scooter goes as high as nine mph. It can stop almost immediately when the rider disengages the propeller.

Hydrospeeding

Also called river sledging, hydrospeeding is a combination of white water rafting and bodyboarding. Participants hold onto the handles of a foam board that works with the specific contours of a human body. Riders must wear a helmet and a wetsuit.  Riders are required to wear even more protective gear if the rapids are notably shallow.

Additionally, the foam board is also designed to protect people from rocks or other obstacles. Everyone must be present for a brief training session in calm water before a guide will take them into the rapids. AirlineRatings.com recently announced their choices for 20 Top Airlines in the World for 2020. This list is only a part of the product and safety rating website’s yearly Airline Excellence Awards, which also features winners in 13 different categories and “the best overall.” To be eligible for nomination an airline must “demonstrate leadership in innovation for passenger comfort” and garner a seven-star safety rating.

The airlines in question must also demonstrate consistency in staff engagement and service. The seven-editor team utilizes the following criteria to determine its annual rankings:

Without further adieu here are the world’s best airlines for 2020:

1. Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand bumped Singapore Airlines out of the top spot this year. The kiwi airline is the country’s flag carrier airline. Based in Auckland, the airline has charted six times now for its performance and has scored several awards for its in-flight innovations, environmental leadership, operational safety, and staff motivation.

They have booked passenger flights to a total of 20 domestic and 32 international locations in 20 countries, mainly in the area of the Pacific Rim. Air New Zealand has been an official member of the well-known Star Alliance since 1999.

2. Singapore Airlines

Up next at number two, is Singapore Airlines. This is the flag carrier of Singapore. Its hub is located at the Singapore Changi Airport.

This company is reportedly “always at the forefront” when it comes to airline awards. In the past two years, it has been praised for its introduction of its new 787-10 and A350 and revamping of its A380s. The airline offers flights to 60+ destinations in 30+ countries. Skytrax voted it as the “world’s best airline” four times. The airline has also topped Travel & Leisure’s best airlines list for decades.

3. All Nippon Airways

Coming in at number three this year is Japan’s All Nippon Airways. Also called Zennikkū, the airline is the country’s largest airline in terms of passenger numbers and revenues. Headquartered in Shiodome City Center in the Minato ward of Tokyo.

It is said to be the leading operator of the Boeing 787 and noted to be a launch customer for the popular 777X. Heralded as being “at the forefront of cabin innovation”. The company offers flights to domestic and international locations and in 2016 were reported to employ more than 20,000 people.

4. Qantas Airways

Qantas Airways Limited is currently the flag carrier of Australia. It’s the country’s biggest airline in terms of international flights, international destinations, and fleet size. This airline slotted in at number four due to its financial performance and also scored the Best Domestic Service and Best Lounge awards.

5. Cathay Pacific Airways

Cathay Pacific Airways, aka Cathay or Cathay Pacific, made it to number five on the list. Always in the winner’s circle, it is Hong Kong’s flag carrier. Airlineratings.com has given the airline several different awards including one for Best Business Class in 2013 and one for Best Asia/Pacific Airline for 2015 and 2016. The main office and hub are situated in Hong Kong International Airport. The company runs a fleet of Airbus A350, Airbus A330, and, of course, Boeing 777 wide-body aircraft.

6. Emirates

In the 6th spot is the state-owned airline Emirates. It’s headquartered in Garhoud, Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Its hub is located at Dubai International Airport.

The airline was rated highly in part because it announced that next year it with offer a Premium Economy class to all of its aircraft. The state has also ordered A350s and 787-9s. Emirates, a subsidiary of The government’s Emirates Group, is the biggest airline in the Middle East. They run more than 3,600 flights every week to over 150 cities in 80 different countries.

7. Virgin Atlantic

Now arriving at spot number seven is Virgin Atlantic. The British airline is also known as Virgin Atlantic International Limited and Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited. Among other things, they were slotted into the top ten for their continuous innovations.

The company’s head office can be found in Crawley, England. It was founded in 1984 and first known as British Atlantic Airways. The company co-founders, Randolph Fields, and Alan Hellary, originally intended to only offer flights between the city of London and the Falkland Islands. The name was later changed to Virgin Atlantic Airways.

8. EVA Air

EVA Air Corporation or EVA Air lands at number eight. EVA actually stands for “Evergreen Airways.” Whatever you want to call it, the airline has reportedly always been the leading Taiwanese aviation company.

The company was founded in 1989. Since 1992 this airline has led the way in terms of premium economy and cabin innovation. It’s based out of the Taoyuan International Airport located near Taipei, Taiwan.

Skytrax gave this airline a five-star rating. It is currently the second-largest airline in Taiwan. EVA Air is based in Luzhu, Taoyuan City, Taiwan.

9. Qatar Airways

In the number nine slot is Qatar Airways. The airline, Qatar Airways Company, Q.C.S.C., was credited for being yet another great innovator. It made the charts, in part, because of award-winning Business Class suites and catering.

This state-owned airline is the flag carrier of Qatar. Its main office is in the impressive Qatar Airways Tower in Doha, the company runs a hub-and-spoke network. The airline connects more than 150 international locations across North America, Africa, Central Asia, Europe, South America, South Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania from Hamad International Airport.

10. Virgin Australia

Scraping into the Top 10 we have Virgin Australia. Virgin Australia Airlines Pty Ltd scored for Best Economy and Best Cabin Crew too. It is not only one of the country’s largest airlines, but it is also the largest airline (going by fleet size) to use the famous Virgin brand.

It launched back in August 2000 under the name Virgin Blue. They had only two aircraft and flew one route. It became a major airline when Ansett Australia went under in September 2001. It currently provides service to 42 destinations in Australia from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

11. Lufthansa

Lufthansa came in at number 11. The name Lufthansa comes from the German term luft which means air and hansa which is short for the Hanseatic League. Also known as Deutsche Lufthansa AG, it was praised for offering the “best long-haul Europe.”

It’s Germany’s flag carrier and also the country’s largest airline. When Lufthansa is combined with its various subsidiaries, it is also Europe’s largest airline (in regards to the number of passengers carried). The entire Lufthansa Group presently has more than 700 aircraft which makes it one of the world’s largest airline fleets.

12. Finnair

Filling out the top dozen airlines for 2020 is Finnair. Finnair is the country’s flag carrier and its largest airline too. You can find its headquarters in Vantaa at the Helsinki Airport. Among other things, it scored high for staff relations and how it treats its staff.

That raises a question on how one judges airlines on staff relations since its staff recently went on strike in solidarity with the postal employees.) Finnair and its subsidiaries rule in terms of both domestic and international flights. The government is the airline’s major shareholder. Finnair has close to 6,000 employees.

13. Japan Airlines

Number 13 was lucky for Japan Airlines Co., Ltd., also known simply as Nikkō. This charting international airline, headquartered in Shinagawa Tokyo, is the nation’s flag carrier. The business is praised for its customer service and innovative promotions.

This airline’s main hubs are presently located at Tokyo International Airport. Tokyo’s Narita International Airport, Osaka International Airport, and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded in 1919 and has its HQ in the city of Amstelveen. Its hub is located close by at the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. KLM is the world’s oldest airline still doing business under its original moniker. At last count, the airline employed almost 36,000 people and had a fleet of 119 aircraft.

15. Korean Air

Slotting it at number 15 this year is the Korean Air Co., Ltd. More commonly known as Korean Airlines or simply Korean Air, it is currently reported to be South Korea’s flag carrier and largest airline according to fleet size, the number of international destinations and the number of international flights.

Korean Air was founded on March 1, 1969, following the Hanjin chaebol’s acquisition of the government-owned company Korean Air Lines. The Hanjin chaebol is owned by the well-known Cho family. The Cho family remains the airline’s controlling shareholder. The airline’s global HQ is situated in the city of Seoul.

16. Hawaiian Airlines

(Isn’t it about time an American airline show up on this list?) Hawaiian Airlines is reported to be the US state of Hawaii’s flag carrier and largest airline. Based in Honolulu, Hawaii. This is the United States’ tenth-largest commercial airline.

This airline has its main hub at the well-known Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on the popular island of Oahu. The company also has a second hub on the island of Maui’s Kahului Airport. Hawaiian Airlines offers flights to the US mainland, American Samoa, Australia, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Asia, and various destinations in Hawaii.

There is something about this airline that simply appeals to people. So it should be no surprise it made the top 20 list. British Airways is the famous flag carrier airline of the entire United Kingdom.

Based on passengers carried and fleet size, it is the United Kingdom’s second-largest airline. Delta Air Lines is the third and final US airline to make the list. Its inclusion may be a surprise to some. After all, frequent flyers and certainly any travel writer worth his or her salt is well aware of certain headline-grabbing incidents in this American company’s past.

Still, it’s earned its slot here. Delta Air Lines, Inc. was actually named as the official best long-haul airline for the Americas. Delta is a legacy carrier and one of the United States’ major airlines. Delta’s main office is situated in Atlanta in the state of Georgia.

Last to make the list is Etihad Airways. This airline is the UAE’s second-largest. The company HQ is located in Khalifa City, in Abu Dhabi.

The Abacos is located less than 187 miles east of the state of Florida. Here you will discover some of the best water in the world for sailing. Here you can enjoy pine-fringed, semi-private beaches, quaint fishing villages, and lively coral reefs. Here the main modes of transportation are boats and golf carts.

It includes coral reefs, deserts, jungles, mangroves, savanna, and green peaks. Go white water rafting in the popular Río Yaque del Norte. Hike through the jungle to the waterfalls, and go bicycling through pine forests.

12. Port Douglas, Australia

Port Douglas is located roughly an hour north of the city of Cairns in Queensland. An ideal place for nature lovers, it’s close to the Daintree Rainforest, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Of course, you needn’t leave PD to enjoy the beach. Port Douglas has Four Mile Beach. It’s a great place for long walks on the beach but there’s no swimming during infamous stinger season (from November through June).

Additional attractions include riding the Bally Hooley Sugar Train through the cane fields to Mossman, the Wildlife Habitat, and fishing trips through the Cape York Peninsula. The best time to go is from May through September when it’s cooler and drier.

13. The Andaman Coast, Thailand

This is not only the place for fiery food, exotic culture, and wonderful scenery, but it won’t break your budget either. Veteran visitors use the Andaman Coast (specifically Krabi or Phuket) as a base from which to explore all the islands in the Andaman Sea. The limestone peaks rising from the turquoise water here are most striking.

The Nicoya Peninsula is situated on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Its jungle-like forests attract eco-tourists but this place is much more than that. While Tamarindo is a big tourist town where you can zipline and go horseback riding, there are other places to see if you wish to avoid the tourist trade.

Playa Tamarindo is perfect for surfers of all skill levels and also includes plenty of hotels and restaurants. This place attracts backpackers, families, too. If you love leatherback turtles the best time to visit is when they nest at Playa Grande from October through March. Be sure to visit the popular Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve which now protects one of the last unspoiled portions of cloud forest on the continent.
