2Katskhi Pillar, Georgia

Visit this sacred albeit isolated place of worship, almost 40 meters high atop this well-known pillar in Georgia. This levitated landmark, about 200 kilometers west of the capital city of Tbilisi, is notoriously famous for being decidedly difficult (if not downright dangerous) to reach. At one time, residents were unable to do little more than gaze skyward at these mysterious raised ruins at its summit for hundreds of years. It was not until 1944, that experienced mountaineer Alexander Japaridze led a team to this place and completed the first officially documented climb of this pillar. To this very day, only mountain climbers have reached the sacred ruins of the church.
