Found in Southeast Alaska, this is the United States’ largest national forest. It covers a total of 16.7 million acres and includes many trees that are more than 1,000 years old. The tall yellow cedar, spruce, and hemlock trees provide a canopy for the ferns and moss that covers the ground. Hike the somewhat challenging 6.7-mile Deer Mountain Trail and look for signs of the residents of the lush forest. Said residents include bald eagles, black bears, brown bears, mountain goats, salmon, and wolves.

9. Chinese Hemlock Trail, Taiwan

Immerse yourself in nature by hiking this quiet, calming trail. The adventure begins in Taipingshan Forest Park. This wetland and forest and old, almost untouched feel to it despite the fact that the trail is well-maintained. Take in the more than 1,000-year-old moss and lichen-covered Hemlock trees and don’t be surprised if the approaching fog makes your travels a bit eerier. When you reach the end of the trail you will be able to see a sea of clouds that will provide you with a lasting memory.
