Hike To An Alpine Teahouse

Some of the hiking trails in the park include alpine teahouses that you will see along the way. This provides visitors with yet another fun and unique experience. For those not in the know, an alpine teahouse is a small cabin on a hiking trail that offers hikers various snacks and tea that’s actually made from real local glacial water.

They generally serve sandwiches, cookies, and, of course, tea. So you’re getting a little taste of the park by stopping here. There are two hiking trails in the park that include teahouses.

The eatery’s extensive menu here offers dishes for both omnivores and vegetarians. They offer both an a-la-carte menu and a buffet. You need to remember though that the restaurant prioritizes seating guests of the hotel.  

So, if you go there on an especially crowded day, you will probably have to wait a bit. The doors open at 6:30 a.m., so if you get there early you have a pretty good chance of being seated quickly if you arrive before the others even wake up.

The two-mile track around the famous lake is always plowed but only open when it’s safe to skate.  During the winter months, this place is open to the public 24/7.  There is even a section specifically kept clear for ice hockey enthusiasts near the town’s beach.  The entire Lake Champlain region is actually great for ice skating.

Lake Vanern, southwest Sweden

Lake Vanern is not only the biggest lake in the entire European Union but it’s also Europe’s third-largest lake.  It is roughly 2,183 square acres and includes over 22,000 islands.   The lake spans three Swedish provinces, Dalsland, Varnland, and Vastergotland.

No one maintains or grooms the ice here.  Nevertheless, it remains an ice skater’s paradise due to its natural, rugged beauty.  Veteran visitors recommend catching the sunrise here and confirm that the numerous colors are nothing less than spectacular.

The Ice Rinks of Switzerland

Your first stop for ice skating is Lake Joux situated in the well-known Lake Geneva region, within the memorable Jura mountain range between France and northwestern Switzerland.  The lake spans an area of almost six square miles.  

There’s also Lake Silvaplana, in Grison.  The ice has to be cleared of the snow prior to anyone skating but there are floodlights here so the skating hours are extended at night.  Around noon strong winds generally kick up near the lake.  While this can discourage some ice skaters, it probably is why kite skiing or snowkiting was invented here.

Lake Weissensee, Carinthia, Austria

Even amateur ice skaters are warmly welcomed at famous Lake Weissensee, ensconced in the Eastern Alps of Austria.  Here you will be able to pick up some tips from experienced ice skating instructors during their seasonal ice skating school.  Ice skating is open here from December 15th through sometime in early March.

The natural ice surface here is regularly groomed.  There are more than two and a half miles of natural ice track here.  There are also stock sport lanes, round ice skating rinks, and even special seasonal classes on speed skating.

Shichahai Lake, Beijing, China

The Shichahai Lake is found in the northwest section of Beijing, China.  It is one of three lakes.  During the winter months, this ice skating spot is particularly popular with children.  No doubt this is largely due to its great 18-foot-long ice slide.

Here you will see more than mere ice skaters.  You could very well spot ice bikes, ice boats . ice bumper cars, and ice chairs as well.  You can also do some night skating if you wish.  Back in 2013, CNN reported that this ice rink was one of the ten top most beautiful in the world.  The best time to visit is from December 15th to December 31st.

Mill Pond Park, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada

Finally, we have Mill Pond Park.  Sure, you might think that a little pond might not make the kind of impression a big frozen lake would make but if you’re into ice skating then don’t overlook this place.  Popular Mill Pond Park is situated in the well-known York section of Ontario, and the greater Toronto area.

Many people come here not only to go ice skating but also to practice ice hockey techniques.  Before you strap on your ice skates, though, you had best visit the pond’s south end.  That’s where they post signs notifying visitors if it is safe to ice skate or not.

The famous Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is an astonishing natural light show near the Arctic Circle. It’s a phenomenal natural light show born of the unique union of charged atmospheric and gaseous particles. The best time to take in these distinctive dancing lights is on any dark, clear night during the winter, fall, or even early spring.

While visibility is dependent on various weather conditions, location is key. The farther north you can go, the better the view. 1. Fairbanks, Alaska, USA

Norway

Tromso is in the northern part of the country above the Arctic Circle. Like the previously-mentioned city of Fairbanks, it too is found within the auroral ring. The best time to visit Tromso is reportedly between October and mid-March. If you touchdown in January, you can even attend the yearly Northern Lights Festival, when both the locals and visitors participate in special outdoor events, live music, and other enjoyable activities.  

Rent the renovated oceanfront barn named Fjosen. This apartment/condo comes complete with three bedrooms and features floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to look out over Ersfjordbotn, a.k.a. the “northern lights fjord,” and the nearby mountains too.

There’s also Borgvaag On The Water. This is a one-bedroom rental ensconced on the lovely Lofoten Islands, also above the Arctic Circle. Here you’ll enjoy 360-degree views of the aurora borealis.

You can also visit the popular Polarlight Centre Lofoten in Laukvik. There are instruments there that actually track all the magnetic activity of the famed lights, so people can get a better idea of when the lights are most visible.

Iceland

The best time to see the colorful northern lights here is from August through April. Check the local forecast prior to heading out to increase your chances of catching them. Go to Selfoss, near Reykjavik, and see them from one of the villas available at Marta House.

The people at Ice Castles have multiple seasonal locations. Each location has its own icy, individualistic features and designs. Every year since the company’s founding, Ice Castles reportedly strives to bring “fairy tales to life “for hundreds of thousands of families” all over the continent of North America.

The full story behind Ice Castles

Since the enterprise’s inception, this venture has been “dedicated to creating an experience that will live on long after the ice melts.” The company hopes that every guest who walks through their “icicle-adorned archways” finds the experience a real source of both “joy and inspiration.” Interestingly enough, after relocating from California to Utah, Brent Christensen, the founder of Ice Castles, built his first ice creation in his own front yard simply to make his six kids happy.

His original ice cave was the perfect cure for their snowy, stir-crazy cabin fever. Ah, but his cool creation was more than a hit with his own family. The neighborhood kids loved it as well.

The name

People from all over town got wind of his icy invention. Soon they were all bundling up, braving the winter weather, and coming to experience his first fun, frozen fortification. The children were soon referring to Christensen’s seasonal playground as the “ice castle.”  

The name stuck and thus all the new wintry wonderlands and today the company is known as Ice Castles. As noted on the website, even though “Ice Castles has grown significantly” since its official launching, “ our mission remains the same – to create happiness, laughter, and unforgettable winter memories.” Ice Castles has even helped adults rediscover the fun inherent in ice and snow and to remember that winter can be more than chains and snow tires, shoveling sidewalks, and salting icy walkways.  

At every location, people will discover light shows, one-of-a-kind mazes, special events, and more. Each individual construct has its own identity due to the individual local climates. Ryan Davis, a board member, once told NBC: “Mother Nature is our primary architect, and we are always amazed by what she allows us to create each season.” He added the company’s crews work hard to layout each “castle’s design so [they] can build a unique, winter experience that is fun for people of all ages.”

Do you want to build an Ice Castle?

Ice Castle reports that each ice castle is handmade entirely out of ice. It requires a team of between 20 and 40 ice artisans putting in “thousands of man-hours” to complete each construct. On a normal workday, the construction process includes creating between 5,000 and 12,000 icicles that workers then harvest by hand and individually sculpt into formation.

Once the icicles are put into place, they are soaked with water. The combination of wind, water volume, temperatures, and specific icicle placement lead to an ever-changing, amazing assortment of individual ice formations. Each of these towering castles takes two months to erect and spans an area of roughly one acre.  

The LED lights used to light the castles are frozen inside the structures. They are timed to “twinkle to music” to add “a magical ambiance” to these icy interactive sculptures. Each ice castle must be built by a natural source of water. This way, in spring the water will return to the environment to be once more used by people, plants, and wildlife.

The ice castles are open to visitors of all ages. In the US, they are usually found in Dillon, Colorado; North Woodstock, New Hampshire; New Brighton, Minnesota; Midway, Utah; and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. There is also one in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Open dates are dependent on the local weather. In general, they open in either late December or early January and are available to the public until some time in early March. The ticket prices vary per location.
