1.  Argentina, South America

Some travelers, including US citizens, are not permitted into the country as this goes to press. Travel experts confirm there are no present plans to fully reopen any time soon either. Since the start of the pandemic, the country has racked up at least 5.25 million cases of COVID-19.

Australia

Australia has had multiple lockdowns and conducted a reportedly “heavy vaccination campaign.” The powers that be hope to reopen the place before December. So vaccinated travelers will once more be able to see wild koalas and kangaroos, experience the outback, and even go snorkeling or scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef. According to Our World in Data, at least 62 percent of Australians have already received a minimum of one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Red zone countries such as the US, are currently barred from entering Bulgaria. However, if you’re a citizen of a red zone country, you can still visit Bulgaria provided you enter from an orange or green zone nation. US citizens coming from the US are not presently permitted into Hong Kong. Indeed no one is allowed to travel from a red zone nation–such as the USA–to Hong Kong for the foreseeable future. It’s also the best place to enjoy Chinese culture with a Brit influence. There’ve been only 213 COVID deaths.

India was hit hard last year and has suffered 446,000+ fatalities. Thus, the country has not yet been reopened to tourists. Before the pandemic, millions of travelers enjoyed the food, ancient culture, and, of course, the Taj Mahal. Less than 45 percent of the population has received a minimum of one shot and less than 16 percent is fully vaccinated.

American citizens can’t visit this renowned “wellness vacation destination” yet without a valid visa. Indonesia is famous for its ancient temples, lovely landscapes, and some of the best beaches on the planet. COVID fatalities have passed 141,000 and 31 percent of its residents have had at least one vaccination.

The famous 2020 Olympics and Paralympics piqued interest in traveling to Japan. Yet as this goes to press in October 2021 tourism is still not permitted. Those events may be over but there remains so much to see there including the arts, the culture, food, nightlife, some of the largest cities on earth, and even a great place for the disabled. So while we may be anxiously anticipating the official reopening, experts say it “could be a while yet.” After all, the virus has taken down more than 17,000 people. Almost 69 percent of the locals have been given at least one shot.

Perhaps a lot of people might find this entry to be surprising. Nevertheless, veteran visitors know that this relatively new nation is home to numerous noteworthy attractions. There have been 816 COVID deaths and at least 34 percent of the citizens are fully vaccinated.

Your rovin’ writer can confirm that Norway is a great country to visit. It features majestic mountains, icy fjords, and wonderful winter scenes. It’s also a good place to see the world-famous aurora borealis.  

Sadly, Americans looking forward to traveling here will have to wait unless they are immediately related to citizens of Norway. The officials in Norway have no plans to change these restrictions in the near future either. They have suffered the loss of 850 people. As this goes to press, at least 76 percent of the total population has been given at least one shot.

If you feel like you’ve been “living underground” recently, folks like the residents of Coober Pedy will tell you to chill out because they are one of the communities that have actually dug down beneath the earth to establish their home. Here then, are several awesome underground cities that might make you want to live in a cave.

Awesome Underground Cities

1. Coober Pedy, South Australia

This famous albeit remote spot in South Australia has been used in several movies including The Adventures of Priscilla, Kangaroo Jack, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome; Queen of the Desert; and Red Planet. A lot of this town’s 1800 residents work in the opal-mining business. When they’re off the clock, they still choose to stay underground. After all, the desert sun pushes the temperatures into the triple-digits for most of the year. These locals beat the heat in their multi-room “dugouts.” If you would like to see for yourself you can stay underneath “Down Under” by getting a nice subterranean suite at the nearby Comfort Inn.

2. Matmata, Tunisia

Star Wars fans will recognize Matmata’s Berber village from the 1977 film Star Wars and 2002’s Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. While Luke Skywalker no longer “lives” there, this place is still home to the real-life, cave-dwelling nomads who roamed this region for centuries. Their homes, or “troglodytes, were actually dug out of the ground by hand.

They start with a single circular opening that eventually is used as a courtyard for other rooms that are dug off of it. It wasn’t a well-known place until the 1960s when the area was impacted by flooding. Today it’s quite popular.

3. Derinkuyu, Turkey

Here in Turkey’s Nevsehir province, there were once dozens of underground villages. Some of those villages harken back to circa 700 BC. The largest one had multiple levels and was home to over 20,000 people.

This community includes all the elements of civilization. Chapels, schools, stores, and even a water system. Cappadocian Greeks sheltered here during wars up ‘til the 1900s. Sometime in 1969, this complex became less of a residence and more of a cool tourist destination. Mind you, when you’re as much as 250 feet underground amidst reportedly “hundreds of thousands of square feet of tunnel,” who knows what you’ll discover.

4. The Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain

Located close to the southern tip of the famous Iberian Peninsula, Setenil is truly a bizarre sight to see. A major portion of this town and the streets are actually built into the stunning surrounding cliffs. Here you’ll see huge rock overhangs 20 to 30 feet overhead as you explore the main drag.

Additionally, you’ll also discover that a number of the storefronts and homes here are little more than façades. In truth, caves are what constitute the majority of the enclosed space because 900 years ago this used to be a Moorish fortress. Today it’s a charming place with 3000 residents.

5. Guadix, Southern Spain

Since you’re already in Spain, hop in your car and head 2.5 hours east. There you can visit the ancient troglodyte village known as Guadix. There are almost 2000 underground homes across the property, dug into the now compacted earth.

The locals here are famous for their hospitality. They often invite travelers in to see their unique homes. Of course, if you’d rather enjoy a more upscale experience, then you’d best reserve a room at the five-star Casas Cuevas Almagruz y Centro de Interpretación Hábitat Troglodita Almagruz. It’s a popular hacienda burrowed into an old sandstone outcropping located on the edge of town.

6. Matera, Italy

The ancient city of Matera was once considered a slum. To those who had never seen Roberto Benigni’s 2019 film Pinocchio, it was even called “the shame of Italy.” In truth, it is one of the oldest still inhabited cities in the world.

It is now alive with wine, culture, and art while its ages-old cliff architecture essentially remains unchanged. Technically, this specific city is not exactly underground since it is actually carved into the rock and gray limestone to one side of the ground. Still, these caves, known as sassi, are incredible. This city, which appears to be both stratospheric and subterranean, includes arches, courtyards, connecting stairways, and tunnels.

7. The Beijing Underground, China

Beijing is one of the most densely populated and largest cities in the world. Space is at a premium. That’s one reason why roughly 1 million people live underground at “bargain-basement prices.” These underground dwellers are called shuzu or “the rat tribe.”
It began during the Cold War when Chairman Mao decided that 20,000 bomb shelters would be excavated to protect people from possible Soviet missile strikes. This small, windowless network of boxes that range from 30 to 300 square feet each. They were turned into hostel rooms back in the 1980s. At less than $60.00 per month, it was a deal the shuzu couldn’t refuse.

8. Singapore

Here in Singapore, you don’t get so much of a historic feel for underground living but a glimpse into the future. There have been underground museums and malls in this admittedly densely populated city-state for over 10 years now. The country’s Urban Redevelopment Authority continues to move heaven and (ahem) earth to promote their progressive concepts.

They have put at over $150 million into related projects. One of the more well-known proposals is the creation of the planet’s first “earth scraper.” People in the know report that these projects are not simply about conserving space but also about conserving energy.

9. Similar Projects

As this goes to press, similar projects for cities are in the works in places like Singapore’s underground park project meant in part as a response to the threat of global warming. There is also New York’s “Lowline” which was meant to be the first subterranean park complete with remote skylights to allow sunlight in for the vegetation. While mounting costs have halted work, officials in Helsinki, Finland, have already announced their own “Underground Master Plan.”

Are you headed down under? If you’re into beautiful scenery, then read on, fellow traveler. Here are some of the most gorgeous gorges in Australia (or anywhere else)!

1. Kermits Pool

Word is getting out on this secret location. The hiking trail that leads to the shining emerald waters of Kermits Pool leads you through a close canyon, past an attractive natural amphitheatre, and through the tricky Spider Walk. Veteran visitors say when you reach this hidden pool you’ll undoubtedly agree it was certainly (ahem) worth the wade.

2. Ormiston Gorge

Ormiston Gorge is situated 135 kilometers from Alice Springs in lovely West MacDonnell National Park in Northern Territory. It is well-known for its thundering waterfalls and towering red rock walls. Here you can go on nature walks and go swimming too. In fact, the waterhole is there all year. Hikers can access sections of the Larapinta Trail here as well.

3. Ghost Gum Lookout

While you’re in the Ormiston Gorge, don’t forget to visit Ghost Gun Lookout. The path to this lookout is well-paved complete with steps. Set at the top of a red quartzite cliff, it’s perfect for Instagram opportunities. The views as you overlook the beautiful landscape from this popular platform are said to be stunning.

4. Nitmiluk Gorge

Also known as the Katherine Gorge, Nitmiluk Gorge is situated in popular Nitmiluk National Park in Northern Territory. (“Nitmiluk” is the local Jawoyn name for this gorge. Literally translated, it means “Cicada Place”.) This noteworthy sandstone area includes incredible cliffs that veteran visitors say actually “glow in the changing light” and consider it a required stop when in the NT.

5. The Ravines

The ravishing ravines of Nitmiluk Gorge are obviously also a required stop. This great gorge features a notable network of 13 different ravines. The best time to visit popular Nitmiluk Gorge and neighboring Nitmiluk National Park is during the country’s dry season from May through September. The area is much less likely to flood and have fewer crocodiles around there as well.

6. The Saltwater Crocodiles

Speaking of crocodiles, these animals enjoy brackish wetlands and saltwater habitats. Thus, they can sometimes be found along the rivers of Australia. Inquire with the local tourist authorities to learn if it is safe to be anywhere near the water. After all, crocodiles were aggressively hunted for their skin until some time in the 1970s so they might still hold a grudge.

7. Carnarvon Gorge

This gorge can be found in Carnarvon National Park in Central Queensland 593 kilometers northwest of the city of Brisbane. Closer to the towns of Rolleston and Injune, it’s almost 30 kilometers long and 600 meters deep.

The product of water erosion, this gorge is reported to be the most visited place in the park due in part to the numerous opportunities offered there and the easy accessibility.

8. The Ol’ Swimming Hole

If you are a big fan of swimming, nature, enjoy trying to spot wildlife and also like a bit of privacy then all you need to do is grab your trunks and head for a secluded swimming hole. Walk across a moss carpet, visit the waterfalls, see the largest fern in the world, and look for platypuses and even swamp wallabies.

9. Indigenous Artwork

Another highlight of touring the gorgeous gorges of Australia is the “natural art gallery” there. Here you see some of the nation’s best Indigenous art. See Aboriginal Australian artwork created via a surprisingly broad range of media. You may see rock carving, rock painting, wood carving, cave painting, bark painting, and more. Tours are available if you’d prefer to see more than what you might accidentally discover.

10. Hancock Gorge

This lesser-known gorge can be found in the Karijini National Park in Western Australia. Those who have been there say it’s one of the country’s “best-kept secrets.” If you want to get the most out of your visit, it is best to hike this picturesque place with a local guide. If you plan on hiking here though you should know that some stretches are challenging.

11. Windjana Gorge

This gorge is located in the Windjana Gorge National Park in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. This gorge was the result of the Lennard River eroding an almost four-kilometer area of the Napier Range. The range itself, composed of Devonian limestone, was formed more than 300 million years ago.

The gorge’s walls are as high as 30 meters and are more than 100 meters wide. The best time to visit is during the dry season. Be sure to watch for freshwater crocodiles too!

12. The Lennard River

You will also find the Lennard River in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. Explorer Alexander Forrest named the river on June 8, 1879 while venturing into the region. He named it after his fiance Amy Eliza Barrett-Lennard. It’s 180 kilometers in length and has a catchment area that’s 14,757 square kilometers. See the river from above as it mirrors the striking blue of the sky.

13. The Stripes

No, we aren’t talking about the stripes of a living creature. In fact, the once native thylacine or Tasmanian tiger is extinct. The tiger stripes that visitors to Australia are now more likely to see are actually part of the lovely landscape. These particular tiger stripes are natural streaks through the orange and red rock. As Tony might say: “They’re gr-r-reat!”

14. Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon can be found in Australia’s Northern Territory. Specifically, it’s situated at the George Gill Range’s western end in the Watarrka National Park. The canyon’s walls are more than 100 meters tall.

Kings Creek is at the bottom. Hikers here may choose from three different walks. Since a portion of this gorge is actually a sacred Aboriginal site, you should avoid veering off the trails.

15. “The Towering”

No, this phrase does not refer to the 1990s Brisbane-based hip hop music group either. Towering is yet another noteworthy aspect of the gorgeous gorges in Australia. Be sure to take notice of the bright, beauteous red sandstone in these gorges that visitors have said offer a veritable “kaleidoscope of colors” that are found towering over the verdant greenery that grows far below.

16. The Kings Canyon Rim Walk

If you’re in reasonably good shape and are an avid hiker this is the hike for you. The hike will have you exploring the impressive Watarrka National Park located in Australia’s Northern Territory. You will see massive 270-meter-high sandstone walls, beehive-like sandstone domes, and even a luring natural spring waterhole nestled amidst large ferns and gum trees. It’s aptly named The Garden of Eden.

17. The Loch Ard Gorge

The lovely Loch Ard Gorge is said by some travel experts to be one of the most-loved stop-off points along Australia’s Great Ocean Road. It is located in Victoria’s popular Port Campbell National Park. This gorge is maybe three minutes from the well-known formation known as the Twelve Apostles. Veteran visitors say you’ll enjoy the inlet of blue, crystal-clear water and a pearlescent bay too.

18. The Legend of Loch Ard Gorge

The previously-mentioned Loch Ard Gorge is not only impressive it also has some history to its name. It is named after the infamous clipper ship, Loch Ard. The vessel ran aground on neighboring Muttonbird Island on June 1, 1878. The ship was near the end of a trip from England to Melbourne. Out of 54 passengers and the full crew, only two people survived.

19. The 12 Apostles

Of course, the Loch Ard Gorge is reported to be overshadowed by the Twelve Apostles. The Twelve Apostles is a group of limestone stacks situated off the shore of the previously-mentioned Port Campbell National Park, in Victoria, Australia. Only seven of the original eight stone stacks are still standing following the total collapse of one stack in July of 2005. Oddly, there were never 12 of them.

20. Cataract Gorge

The European explorer William Collins officially discovered the entrance to this place in 1804. This river gorge is found in the Cataract Gorge Cliffgrounds and Reserve, in Launceston, Tasmania. It’s a 15-minute walk (1.5 kilometers) from the city center. One of the area’s big tourist attractions, it’s located at the lower portion of the South Esk River.

21. World’s Longest Chairlift

If you prefer taking in the scenery while sitting on your butt, Australia has just the attraction for you. Of course. you had best not be afraid of heights. Indeed, it’s there in Cataract Gorge that you can ride the longest single-span chairlift in the world. Built in 1972, it spans the surroundings of the large natural basin frequently filled by the rushing South Esk River.

22. King’s Bridge

The iconic landmark known as King’s Bridge is a strong wrought-iron bridge that crosses the thundering South Esk River. It’s located at the mouth of the popular Cataract Gorge in Launceston. Construction began in 1864. Once known as the South Esk Bridge, it used to be the only place in the city where vehicles could cross the river.

23. Cania Gorge

The Cania Gorge is situated in the Cania Gorge National Park in Cania within the North Burnett Region of Queensland. The gorge is approximately 225 kilometers west of Bundaberg. The 70-meter sandstone cliffs are perhaps the park’s most dominant feature. Indeed, the Aboriginal art found on the cliff walls reveals there’s been a community there more than 19,000 years ago.

24. Discover Hidden Treasure

And speaking of Aboriginal art, such national parks are often rife with such hidden treasures as Aboriginal art, unique rock formations, beautiful springs and crystal-clear pools, and assorted native wildlife. Some of the best national parks to see great rock art are the Kakadu and Ubirr National Parks. (The former is reportedly owned by the indigenous people.)

25. The Sandstone Cliffs

Those who have been can confirm that the popular Cania Gorge in Cania Gorge National Park in Cania locality is actually surrounded by vibrant, memorable, towering sandstone cliffs, crevices, caves, and verdant rainforest. There’s local wildlife here too. The park has something for every kind of nature lover.

26. Barron Gorge

Barron Gorge is an official locality in Queensland’s Cairns Region. Nearly the entire place is as yet undeveloped land located within the well-known Barron Gorge National Park that actually spans significantly into more than one of the nearby localities. The gorge itself is actually the result of erosion from the Barron River rushing through the Great Dividing Range. It’s highlighted by plunging waterfalls and lush greenery.

27. The Kuranda Scenic Railway

In the words of the Quad City DJ’s: “Come on, ride the train . . .” This special line goes from the city of Cairns, Queensland, over the famous Great Dividing Range to the small town of Kuranda located on the Atherton Tableland. It follows a specific route on the Cairns-to-Kuranda line which only functions as a tourist service. It passes over 40 bridges and through 15 tunnels. You can ride it any time except for Christmas Day.

28. A World Heritage Area

Famous for fishing, the Barron River is located on the Atherton Tablelands.  Barron Gorge National Park is a part of Queensland’s Wet Tropics World Heritage area.  The river flows through Lake Tinaroo and eventually empties into the Coral Sea.

29. Mossman Gorge

Now almost 50 members of the Acoma tribe live in “Sky City.”  It’s thus named because it seems to be precariously perched atop a 367-foot mesa. They have no smartphones, no electricity or running water and live as their ancestors did.

4. Cuicuilco, Mexico

This ancient ceremonial center and archaeological site is located on the shore of well-known Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico, in famous Mexico City. The moss-covered lava blocks and stones of this temple are in danger of being reclaimed by the earth as the weeds and green grass peeking out between the stones indicates. The Cuicuilco Pyramid harkens back to 2000 BC. (Cuicuilco is Nahuatl for “place of songs.”) The residents of this place were the first to record the sun’s movements, thus initiating the creation of the first calendar.

5. Borchgrevink’s Hut, Antarctica

This structure is noteworthy for both its significant place in the exploration of this continent and because it was the very first man-made structure built here. Because of the strong offshore winds and heavy surf Cape Adare is one of the most inhospitable landing sites in Antarctica. It was in 1899 that Norwegian Commander Carsten Borchgrevink erected two huts so that he and his team could be the first expedition to spend the night in Antarctica. Visitors can still see the original huts and their remaining contents there today.

6. Pyramid of Djoser, Egypt

Also known as the Step Pyramid, this pyramid is located in the ancient Saqqara necropolis, northwest of Memphis. It predates the world-famous Great Pyramid of Giza by several hundred years. It’s also the planet’s “oldest still-standing stone building.”

The man-made pyramid was constructed between 2667 and 2648 BC for the Egyptian pharaoh Djoser who ruled during the nation’s third dynasty. This step pyramid has a total of six layers that have been restored over a period of 14 years. Finally open to the public, travelers can now wander through the pyramid.

7. Caral-Supe, Peru

The sacred city of Caral-Supe (or simply Caral) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 150-acre plot of homes, plazas, and pyramids is located on an arid desert terrace that overlooks the valley of the Supe River. Archaeologists unearthed a reed carrying bag that dates back to the Late Archaic period which started in 3000 BC.

8. Dholavira, India

This archaeological site is situated at Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District, in Gujarat in India. It’s a man-made Harappan city isolated from modern-day civilization by the well-known salt plains of Rann of Kachchh. It was rediscovered in 1956.

It’s named after a contemporary village only 1 kilometer to the south. Researchers agree this ancient locale was probably occupied from 2650 BC to 1450 BC. The defensive fortifications, grid-like streets, and advanced drainage systems might very well be one of the first examples of early city planning.

9. Göbekli Tepe, Turkey

Located in Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia Region, this archaeological site is roughly 12 kilometers or seven miles away from Şanlıurfa. Experts say this is the first man-made temple on the planet. 1. Dadès Gorge, Morocco

2. The Fish River Canyon, Namibia

The size of the Fish River Canyon alone can inspire awe. The canyon is roughly 26 kilometers (16 miles) wide and 161 kilometers (100 miles) long. It’s approximately 549 meters (1,800 feet) deep.

Park your car at the Weano Day Use Area lot and walk the three-kilometer (less than two-mile) loop to Handrail Pool.

The ice fields high up on Kilimanjaro are said to be the “ultimate destination” for mountain climbers. Unfortunately, scientific data indicates that the ice atop Africa’s highest mountain has been slowly receding by one percent each year since 1912. Ice stopped accumulating there 20 years ago.

The ice melts and the dark soil is exposed. This soil actually absorbs more heat, making the glaciers melt faster. At the present rate of decline, the glaciers will be gone in 15 years.

The 2005 DreamWorks smash-hit animated film really put this place on the map. Unfortunately, the odds of you spotting its endemic, adorable lemurs on this large isle off the east coast of Africa aren’t good. This is the only place you have a chance of seeing them in the wild too.

Farming for charcoal and firewood and recurring fires have really whittled down the forest here. At last count, only 10 percent of the original expansive forest remains untouched. This further threatens the lemurs that are already at risk because of poaching.

1. Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand bumped Singapore Airlines out of the top spot this year. The kiwi airline is the country’s flag carrier airline. Based in Auckland, the airline has charted six times now for its performance and has scored several awards for its in-flight innovations, environmental leadership, operational safety, and staff motivation.

They have booked passenger flights to a total of 20 domestic and 32 international locations in 20 countries, mainly in the area of the Pacific Rim. Air New Zealand has been an official member of the well-known Star Alliance since 1999.

2. Singapore Airlines

Up next at number two, is Singapore Airlines. This is the flag carrier of Singapore. Its hub is located at the Singapore Changi Airport.

This company is reportedly “always at the forefront” when it comes to airline awards. In the past two years, it has been praised for its introduction of its new 787-10 and A350 and revamping of its A380s. The airline offers flights to 60+ destinations in 30+ countries. Coming in at number three this year is Japan’s All Nippon Airways. Also called Zennikkū, the airline is the country’s largest airline in terms of passenger numbers and revenues. Headquartered in Shiodome City Center in the Minato ward of Tokyo.

It is said to be the leading operator of the Boeing 787 and noted to be a launch customer for the popular 777X. Heralded as being “at the forefront of cabin innovation”. The company offers flights to domestic and international locations and in 2016 were reported to employ more than 20,000 people.

In the 6th spot is the state-owned airline Emirates. It’s headquartered in Garhoud, Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Its hub is located at Dubai International Airport.

Now arriving at spot number seven is Virgin Atlantic. The British airline is also known as Virgin Atlantic International Limited and Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited. Among other things, they were slotted into the top ten for their continuous innovations.

6. The Mamanuca Islands, Fiji

The Mamanuca Islands are the perfect spot for a tropical vacation if you favor sun-soaked South Seas islands. Found in Fiji, they’re but a brief boat ride out of the gateway village of Nadi. This is a string of approximately 20 Instagramable islands.

French-influenced St. Barts is the place to be if you like a jet-setter scene that comes complete with private villas, and fun in the sun in a tropical paradise. Expect a sizable price tag though as mega-moguls and movie stars mean you pay more for food and accommodations. Still, your purchase comes complete with beauteous blond beaches backed by verdant hills, world-class dining and shopping, and a more sophisticated culture that other tropical locations lack.

Naturally visiting in low season will garner you some decent deals. You can even stay in a boutique hotel or private villa and live like the rich and famous do but for less. You can also go diving, kite-surfing, sailing, fishing, surfing, snorkeling, and kayaking. Visit Gustavia, the pretty red-roofed capital, too.

8. The Abacos, The Bahamas

The Abacos is located less than 187 miles east of the state of Florida. Here you will discover some of the best water in the world for sailing. Also known as the Family Islands or the Out Islands, this peaceful place seems a world away from the tourist traps of Florida. Here you can enjoy pine-fringed, semi-private beaches, quaint fishing villages, and lively coral reefs. Here the main modes of transportation are boats and golf carts.

History buffs will note the impact of the Brit Loyalists who originally settled here. It can be seen in the colonial cottages. The best spots for a low-key tropical vacation include the three-mile-long, charming, old school Green Turtle Cay, Elbow Cay, with its popular candy-striped lighthouse and Treasure Cay with its white-sand beach.

9. Ambergris Caye, Belize

Ambergris Caye can be found right off the tip of the well-known Yucatán Peninsula. It’s the largest and most popular of Belize’s 200 cayes. Its famous Hol Chan Marine Reserve makes for some great snorkeling and diving.

A mere half-mile from shore, the Belize Barrier Reef system is the world’s second-largest. Visit Shark Ray Alley where you can come face to face with stingrays and nurse sharks. Fishermen flock to the flats here for barracuda, snook, permit, and tarpon fishing.

Drop in on the lively town of San Pedro. Dine on fresh fish at the funky eateries found there. The northern section of the isle is located so close to Mexico you can also sample Mexican-inspired cuisine too. A lot of the locals even habla Espanol.

10. Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles is a great choice for travelers on a budget looking for a tropical vacation. Mind you, this place is not simply great value resorts and beautiful beaches. DR is home to a number of diverse ecosystems too.

It includes coral reefs, deserts, jungles, mangroves, savanna, and green peaks. Go white water rafting in the popular Río Yaque del Norte. Hike through the jungle to the waterfalls, and go bicycling through pine forests.

Visit Santo Domingo. It’s the capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its history and colonial architecture. If you’d like to stay at an all-inclusive resort head to La Romana, Punta Cana, or Samaná. If you just want to dive, snorkel, sunbathe, surf, and swim, you can do that as well.

11. Bali, Indonesia

Bali offers a tropical vacation with a spiritual aspect. Look at the incense-filled temples and gentle, calm locals. Naturally, it is more than that.

See the rice paddies in the setting sun. There are unique shops, restaurants, and beach scenes. Bali also offers affordable spa treatments.

Ensconced in the green hills, Ubud is what some call the isle’s “emerald soul.” If you’re traveling with the family Sanur is the place to be. Veteran visitors suggest staying in Seminyak or Kuta which both include super surf beaches.

12. Port Douglas, Australia

Port Douglas is located roughly an hour north of the city of Cairns in Queensland. This upscale destination has gone from a charming fishing village to a tropical tourist spot and a base for wilderness safaris and reef trips. An ideal place for nature lovers, it’s close to the Daintree Rainforest, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Of course, you needn’t leave PD to enjoy the beach. Port Douglas has Four Mile Beach. It’s a great place for long walks on the beach but there’s no swimming during infamous stinger season (from November through June).

Additional attractions include riding the Bally Hooley Sugar Train through the cane fields to Mossman, the Wildlife Habitat, and fishing trips through the Cape York Peninsula. The best time to go is from May through September when it’s cooler and drier.

13. The Andaman Coast, Thailand

This is not only the place for fiery food, exotic culture, and wonderful scenery, but it won’t break your budget either. Veteran visitors use the Andaman Coast (specifically Krabi or Phuket) as a base from which to explore all the islands in the Andaman Sea. The limestone peaks rising from the turquoise water here are most striking.

If you’re looking for resorts, Phi Phi Don has them. If you’re a movie buff, there’s Ko Phi Phi Leh, where the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach was shot. There’s also Phang Nga Bay, home to famous James Bond Island. If you want a more personal patch of tropical paradise though travel a bit further afield. The best time to go is any time other than during monsoon (late May through mid-October.)

14. The Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

The Nicoya Peninsula is situated on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Its jungle-like forests attract eco-tourists but this place is much more than that. While Tamarindo is a big tourist town where you can zipline and go horseback riding, there are other places to see if you wish to avoid the tourist trade.

Playa Tamarindo is perfect for surfers of all skill levels and also includes plenty of hotels and restaurants. This place attracts backpackers, families, too. If you love leatherback turtles the best time to visit is when they nest at Playa Grande from October through March. Be sure to visit the popular Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve which now protects one of the last unspoiled portions of cloud forest on the continent.
