A first cruise can be an exciting and unforgettable experience as you sail from one stunning horizon to another taking in fun and fantastic foreign sunsets.

Unfortunately, it can also be intimidating. After all, with the larger cruise ships rising almost 20 stories into the sky and serving literally thousands of passengers it is almost like a small town sailing on the sea.

Before boarding, there are some things you should know to help make your first cruise more enjoyable.

20. Not all cruises are the same

If you have never booked a cruise you might be tempted to take the one with the lowest price. You might figure if the destination is the same how different can they be? Truth is, there is a variety of cruises and they can be quite different from each other.

One ship might offer more entertainment such as the Sea N’ Beats festival. Another might specialize in five-star dining experiences.

Yet another might sell to a niche crowd such as the Meow Meow Cruise, which caters to cat lovers. Know what you want before you go hunting for deals.

19. Some cabins have no windows

Yes, a cruise can have its share of grandeur but not all cabin rooms are fancy. Some don’t even have windows. In size, some of them are very reminiscent of a coach car in a train. If you are one of those people who finds it difficult to even sleep in a small, enclosed space then you had best do your due diligence regarding your room’s size and amenities. Compare costs before you book your room.

If you find the price of upgrading to a larger room to be a concern, consider talking someone into joining you and splitting the cost.
