Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is famous for being the location of numerous world-class wineries, and California’s comparatively mild winter is a great time to enjoy a cozy cabernet on a comfy heated patio. Providing it’s dry, you can take an outdoor winery tour and do a patio tasting. Being low-season, even the most famous wineries are comparatively crowd-free.

This means less competition to make reservations at the wineries (and some restaurants as well). Fewer tourists translates to a more individualized tasting experience too. Wisconsin

Yes, this state has some of the nation’s coldest temperatures in winter. Still, there are many fun winter activities to be found here. Visit Door County and go ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.

You can also take a fun winter wine tour and snowy sleigh ride, and then warm up with a real, old-school fish fry. There are also the ice caves of Apostle Island located in Bayfield. Found along lovely Lake Superior, they are in part the result of waves splashing onto the rock and partially freezing onto the cliff. Visit between late January through late February, since the lake has to be frozen solid in order to access the caves.

Duluth, Minnesota

Duluth is found in the northern part of the state on the shores of well-known Lake Superior. There’s a surprising variety of both indoor and outdoor activities here and thus it is one of the country’s most underrated winter destinations. For example, there’s the annual Bentleyville “Tour of Lights”, which is the biggest, free seasonal light festival in the nation.

Spirit Mountain is great for skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and snow tubing too. Indoor activities include a weekend tour of the local assorted eateries. Veteran visitors recommend the Zeitgeist. It’s a nice diner complete with a boutique movie theater that focuses on indie films. There’s also the Rathskeller cocktail bar, situated in the old city hall building.

Denver, Colorado

Denver is a great place for a winter weekend getaway. It’s close enough to the mountains to go skiing but it offers other activities. Head to Union Station where you’ll take in the sight of the quaint historic train station decorated for the holidays.

Do some ice skating in Skyline Park. If you have your own skates, it’s free. If not, you can rent adult skates for $9.00 or $7.00 for children aged 12 and under. Foodies can explore the Denver Central Food Market and get some culture at the Denver Art Museum. Be sure to see the towering 110-foot tree of lights in the center of the city throughout December.

Joshua Tree, California

Some say this is one of those must-see places that is often too hot in the summer to truly enjoy. After all, most of the year, it’s generally 99 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Ah, but if you want to beat the heat, visit Joshua Tree from December through March when you can more comfortably explore this beautiful 794,000-acre area.

Hike the Indian Cove Trail, which leaves clues about the Native American tribes that once lived here, or climb the famous “Chasm of Doom” which is the result of numerous huge boulders that are pressed together to form a rugged tunnel-like canyon. Get a good look at the iconic trees there as well.

 Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Rocky Mountain National Park is yet another place that becomes a wonderful winter wonderland when the temperatures drop. While a portion of the park is closed in the winter, there is still a lot to do here. You can go cross-country or back-country skiing.

Put on your microspikes or snowshoes and do some winter hiking. Hike to Dream, Nymph, and Emerald Lakes. It is quite pretty in the winter and is less than four miles total. The trailhead is at Bear Lake. If you enjoy spotting wildlife, you are in luck. Indeed, it is not uncommon for park visitors to see such four-legged residents as bighorn sheep and even elk.

Mt Baker, Washington

If you enjoy snowy adventures, head to Mt Baker in Washington State’s Cascade Mountain range. The friendly Mt Baker Ski Resort is one of the nation’s few existing family-run ski resorts. Here you’ll find newbie-friendly runs to off-piste skiing for skiers who are more advanced.

It’s not one of the larger resorts and thus there are generally not long lift lines and the slopes are comparatively quiet. The prices are lower here too. Furthermore, this place usually gets the largest snowfall of any of the other resorts in the lower 48. If you’d rather go snowshoeing, the Artist Point snowshoe trail is highly recommended. It’s a well-marked trail and only four miles in length.

Leavenworth, Washington

If you can’t afford to go see the Christmas Markets in Europe, despair not! Travel to the charming Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth. Although it’s just two hours from Seattle, your drive will take you to a place that seems far from there.

As the December holidays approach, Leavenworth becomes a twinkling scene from a seasonal snow globe. Visit the town’s gazebo and enjoy live music by performers in traditional German clothing as your kids go sledding there. Enjoy the famous Christmas lighting events held there on the weekends.  

Want to avoid the crowds? Visit after Christmas, as the businesses there keep the lights lit throughout winter. You can go skiing, snowshoeing and hot-tubbing too.

New York City, New York

New York City is a cosmopolitan metropolis that pulls out all the stops when temperatures drop, and the snow begins to fall. Marvel at the sight of the Empire State Building lit for the holidays. See the snow-covered city from high atop the famous building too.

Visit Rockefeller Center and see the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. You can even ice skate there (although it’s often crowded and costly.)! Veteran visitors suggest the Standard Rink or the Sky Rink as exceptional alternatives for ice skating. Hawaii, the Big Island, offers visitors lush landscapes, beautiful beaches, and great weather all year long so it’s an exceptional winter destination and a great way to beat the summer crowds. Sources disagree on which island is the best, as it depends on one’s interest. The Big Island has exceptional resorts, and Volcanoes National Park which features active volcanoes and the biggest volcano on the planet, and the Kona Brewery.

Kauai, the Green Island, is highlighted by lush greenery and Waimea Canyon State Park. Maui includes the Road to Hana, and arguably the best sunrise on Haleakalā. Oahu, the birthplace of yours truly, has Disney’s Aulani Resort, North Shore, Pearl Harbor, and Waikiki Beach.

 Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Head to South Florida where you’ll find another hot US winter destination, Fort Lauderdale. Known to some as the “Venice of America”, it is becoming more popular as a great place to kick back on the beach and soak in some Vitamin D. Roughly 24 miles from its giant neighbor, Miami, it is reportedly literally becoming the “Queen of Florida.”

Yes, Fort Lauderdale has a gay scene that has significantly blossomed over the past couple of decades. Indeed, today it is one of the world’s “top LGBTQ destinations.” The best time to visit is from December to March. It’s outside of hurricane season and temperatures range between the high 50s and the mid-80s.

There are various ice caves, frozen rivers, and lagoons in south-central Alaska, but the Portage Lake in the popular Chugach National Forest is a paradise for those looking to skate in the wild. It’s nearly a mile wide and three miles long and is found at the foot of the icy monolith named Portage Glacier. Indeed, if you get tired of ice-skating, you could even ride across this lake on a specially outfitted fat bike, should you so desire.

Great Slave Lake, Canada

As you may have already realized, there are a number of different incredible natural ice skating destinations here in Canada. Nevertheless, there are not many more spectacular than the icy Arctic lakes located in the Northwest Territories. The Great Slave Lake is not far from Yellowknife, the regional capital.

It is the world’s tenth-largest lake just 250 miles from the Arctic Circle. Hence you might even get a glimpse of the great shape-shifting lights known as the aurora borealis. Lake Baikal, Russia

Looking for a little winter break but can’t afford anything especially exotic or too terribly tropical? Perhaps you like the bite of the fresh winter air and the sight of freshly fallen snow.

Whatever the case might be, America’s natural wonders take on a whole new look once Jack Frost arrives. The frozen scenery in the US can be pretty awe-inspiring and you can beat the crowds too. Thus, without further ado, here are seven American wonders of winter.

1.  Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Beautiful Bryce Canyon National Park is located in Utah.  Visit during the winter and you’ll be rewarded with memorable views of Bryce Canyon’s snow-draped hoodoos.  These high natural rock structures were formed many, many years ago from ice, water, and wind erosion.  If that’s not enough for you, don’t worry.  There’s a lot to see and do here even in winter.

After all, the popular Bryce Canyon is a distinctive group of natural amphitheaters.  You will find them located one mile up and are only said to be a “canyon” for publicity purposes. If you like stars, be sure to visit when it’s dark so you can participate in the annual astronomy event.  Check in at The Lodge there and you can take advantage of other winter programs.

2.  Coyote Buttes, Arizona

The rugged Coyote Buttes is actually a part of the popular Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness.  The property stretches across north-central Arizona and south-central Utah.  Head south of south of US 89 and you will find it halfway between Page, Arizona and Kanab, Utah.

Coyote Buttes includes two separate sections. Coyote Buttes North and Coyote Buttes South.  Veteran visitors suggest seeing “The Wave,” a stunning sandstone rock formation found in Coyote Buttes North.  The multi-colored appearance of the sandstone is due to the presence of different iron oxide pigments inside the various layers.  

Be sure to see the popular trample surface or dinosaur trackway too.  Remember though that in order to properly preserve this place, everyone must purchase a hiking permit.  A maximum of 20 people is permitted each day.

3.  Joshua Tree National Park, California

Take in the sight of the sun rising over the sturdy, snow-dusted Joshua trees found in California’s impressive Mojave Desert.  This place was made world-famous when the Irish rock band U2 released their 1987 album Joshua Tree.  This national park Is actually promoted as the spot where two different desert ecosystems meet, the Colorado and the Mojave.  

It was also reportedly last year’s official 11th most-visited national park.  This place is home to a number of different flora and fauna, as well as approximately 501 individual archeological sites and the best group of rugged rock-climbing faces in the entire country.  Finally, this park has some truly surreal geological features and a surprisingly rich cultural history.  Take it from your rovin’ writer, it’s also a good place to go hiking.

4.  Multnomah Falls, Oregon

The  Multnomah Falls look incredible no matter when you visit but there are certainly fewer crowds there in the winter months.  You will find them off of Multnomah Creek in the well-known Columbia River Gorge, between Dodson and Corbett just east of Troutdale.  You can access the falls and other wonders from Interstate 84 and the well-known Historic Columbia River Highway.

These beautiful falls span two tiers down cliffs of basalt.  It is 620 feet high and is therefore the tallest one in the entire state.  Even after an icy storm, the water will continue to drop down into the river.

Take in the view from the impressive Benson Bridge, erected in 1914.  Stop at the renowned Multnomah Falls Lodge. It and all the trails there have been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1981.

5.  St. Joseph Lighthouses, Michigan

Take it light in St. Joseph, (a.k.a. St Joe to the locals)  Michigan.  The famous St. Joseph Situated on Lake Michigan, the lighthouses successfully withstand the winter elements.  Erected in the early 1900s, the pair of lighthouses and the accompanying outer light is said to be perhaps the oldest on the well-known lake.

Those who have been confirm that the walk from popular Silver Beach to the lighthouses is “perfect distance” if you’re up for a little exercise.  These lighthouses are also a great place to get away from the summer beach scene and the view is always noteworthy regardless of when you visit.  Some people even find the lighthouses and surrounding area perfect for a romantic hand-in-hand stroll.

6.  Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho

Yellowstone National Park actually spans the states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.  Founded back in 1872, it includes almost 5,592 square miles of ground.  It’s one of the first. oldest, and most popular national parks on earth.

Veteran visitors say you need to visit the colorful Belgian Pool.  It’s a memorable hot spring nestled in the Upper Geyser Basin of the park.  First christened Oyster Spring, this unique natural wonder was rechristened after a Belgian man accidentally fell into it back in 1929 and received fatal thermal burns.  So don’t get too close!

7.  Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite National Park ensconced in beautiful Mariposa County is perhaps most known for its 20 waterfalls but there are arguably a lot of significant sights to see here.  Those in the know recommend seeing the sunset as it lights up the famous granite monolith known as El Capitan.  It is also the biggest chunk of granite in the world and a favorite of experienced rock climbers.  It’s 3,500 feet high.  Be sure to take time to see such wonders as the giant sequoias, great glaciers, and the Half Dome as well.

Ice Castles 

Ice Castles is an American company founded in 2011. This interesting enterprise is dedicated to the creation of a truly unique winter wonderland like no other. They offer visitors a must-see, inspiring, winter phenomenon.  

According to the official Ice Castles company website, Ice Castles’ primary goal “is to make people smile.” Their award-winning, frigid ice attraction is created “with hundreds of thousands of icicles” that are actually “hand-placed by professional ice artists” thus making frozen fantasies a reality. . . if only while the cold weather lasts. Touted as “winter’s most magical attraction,” each artistic ice structure is said to weigh approximately 25 million pounds. They include lovely LED lights, fountains, ice-carved slides, thrones, and tunnels.  

The people at Ice Castles have multiple seasonal locations. Each location has its own icy, individualistic features and designs. Every year since the company’s founding, Ice Castles reportedly strives to bring “fairy tales to life “for hundreds of thousands of families” all over the continent of North America.

The full story behind Ice Castles

Since the enterprise’s inception, this venture has been “dedicated to creating an experience that will live on long after the ice melts.” The company hopes that every guest who walks through their “icicle-adorned archways” finds the experience a real source of both “joy and inspiration.” Interestingly enough, after relocating from California to Utah, Brent Christensen, the founder of Ice Castles, built his first ice creation in his own front yard simply to make his six kids happy.

His original ice cave was the perfect cure for their snowy, stir-crazy cabin fever. Ah, but his cool creation was more than a hit with his own family. The neighborhood kids loved it as well.

The name

People from all over town got wind of his icy invention. Soon they were all bundling up, braving the winter weather, and coming to experience his first fun, frozen fortification. The children were soon referring to Christensen’s seasonal playground as the “ice castle.”  

The name stuck and thus all the new wintry wonderlands and today the company is known as Ice Castles. As noted on the website, even though “Ice Castles has grown significantly” since its official launching, “ our mission remains the same – to create happiness, laughter, and unforgettable winter memories.” Ice Castles has even helped adults rediscover the fun inherent in ice and snow and to remember that winter can be more than chains and snow tires, shoveling sidewalks, and salting icy walkways.  

At every location, people will discover light shows, one-of-a-kind mazes, special events, and more. Each individual construct has its own identity due to the individual local climates. Ryan Davis, a board member, once told NBC: “Mother Nature is our primary architect, and we are always amazed by what she allows us to create each season.” He added the company’s crews work hard to layout each “castle’s design so [they] can build a unique, winter experience that is fun for people of all ages.”

Do you want to build an Ice Castle?

Ice Castle reports that each ice castle is handmade entirely out of ice. It requires a team of between 20 and 40 ice artisans putting in “thousands of man-hours” to complete each construct. On a normal workday, the construction process includes creating between 5,000 and 12,000 icicles that workers then harvest by hand and individually sculpt into formation.

Once the icicles are put into place, they are soaked with water. The combination of wind, water volume, temperatures, and specific icicle placement lead to an ever-changing, amazing assortment of individual ice formations. Each of these towering castles takes two months to erect and spans an area of roughly one acre.  

The LED lights used to light the castles are frozen inside the structures. They are timed to “twinkle to music” to add “a magical ambiance” to these icy interactive sculptures. Each ice castle must be built by a natural source of water. This way, in spring the water will return to the environment to be once more used by people, plants, and wildlife.

Locations, hours, and other info

The ice castles are open to visitors of all ages. In the US, they are usually found in Dillon, Colorado; North Woodstock, New Hampshire; New Brighton, Minnesota; Midway, Utah; and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. There is also one in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Open dates are dependent on the local weather. In general, they open in either late December or early January and are available to the public until some time in early March. The ticket prices vary per location.

Ice Castle fans can catch a preview of what’s to come for each winter by visiting Ice Castle’s official Instagram account. Interested parties can also visit the official Ice Castles website where they can sign up for special alerts that will notify them of when a new ice castle will be opening near them.

“I have to say, the Ice Castles never fail to amaze me! The gorgeous ice formations and colour-changing lights are magical! The snow Buffalo was really cool (pun totally intended), as were the rest of the ice sculptures! I really loved the ice thrones too, perfect for pics.”
