All waste must be recycled, and there is often a sustainable way of getting to the beach. Most importantly, a beach must have excellent swimming water and contain no trace of sewage or industrial-related discharge that could potentially impact the beach environment.  

Upon arrival, you will probably notice posted information about both water quality and the ecosystems there. As this goes to press, Spain has over 600 Blue Flag beaches located along its coastline and islands. The coral reportedly contributes to the clarity of the water and makes it a great place for snorkeling. Here you can see fish, turtles, eels, and (gasp) even sharks. The famous explorer Jacque Cousteau specifically claimed that the popular Great Blue Hole was “one of the best diving sites” on the planet.

Andaman Islands, India

The Andaman Islands are an exceptional archipelago found in the northeastern Indian Ocean almost 130 kilometers southwest from the coasts of the Ayeyarwady Region of Myanmar. Here on Havelock Island, you will find Radhanagar Beach.

Experience strolling across the superfine sand that slopes gently into the attractive azure water of the well-known Bay of Bengal. Of course, in order to reach this remote island, you will need to travel via seaplane or ferry. The extra travel time is worth it though in order to engage in such exotic experiences as snorkeling with elephants and seeing the rare marine one can only catch a glimpse of there.

The Maldives, Asia

The archipelagic state of Maldives in the Indian Ocean is situated southwest of India and Sri Lanka. It’s roughly 700 kilometers from mainland Asia. It consists of 1,190 islands amidst numerous crystal clear lagoons. As regular readers know, the luxurious overwater bungalows are popular here because guests can get up close and personal with the tropical sea life. Indeed, the water is so popular here some resorts feature underwater restaurants where you can dine surrounded by an abundance of festive fish and other sea creatures.

Exuma Islands, Bahamas

Have you ever seen a pig swim? No, not your overweight neighbors enjoying their pool, but a real honest-to-God pig? If you would like to, then that is yet one more reason to visit the exciting Exuma Islands.  

Here you will have your choice of 360 islands that all offer awesome 360-degree views of shining cerulean seas. El Nido, The Philippines

Kailua Beach Park, Kailua, Hawaii

As expected, the popular tropical paradise of Hawaii slots in five times on our top ten chart. Coming in at number 10, is the breathtakingly beautiful Kailua Beach Park on your rovin’ writer’s birthplace, the island of Oahu. The park spans 30 acres and includes a two-mile-long beach and a green, grassy picnic area, a boat ramp, volleyball court, and even a few food stands. This is a longtime favorite vacation spot for ex-President Barack Obama who often rented this huge home near here.

Madeira Beach, Madeira Beach, Florida

You will find this rather relaxed beach on the gleaming Gulf of Mexico just west of St. Petersburg. This two-and-a-half-mile-long beach is especially popular with sand strollers and sun-worshippers. It is also a hot spot for fishermen. Indeed, experts report that more grouper is actually caught right here than in any other place in the entire state. This place is famous for holding the yearly John’s Pass Seafood Festival which is highlighted by live music and, of course, fresh seafood dishes.

Wai’anapanapa State Park, Hana, Hawaii

See the volcano-born black sand here on this otherworldly, rather remote on the idyllic isle of Maui. Keep an eye on the tide pools that actually turn red several times throughout the year. 1. Cozumel, Mexico

If you like good weather and great prices, the best time to visit is between late March and June. You can spend all day on a Cozumel beach for free.  If you’d rather swim in a pool, buy a day pass at a local luxury resort.  You can use the pool and sun chairs and don’t have to pay to sleep there.  You can pick up a cheap souvenir and a bite to eat at the local mercado – a little market in the local plaza.

2. Dominican Republic

Visit the Dominican Republic from April through June and enjoy warm weather and discounted rates of up to 50 percent on flights and accommodations.   Avoid Punta Cana and Santo Domingo.  Instead, avoid the beaten path and stay in Bahia de las Aguilas or Samana.  In a lot of places, staying at an all-inclusive resort will save you money because there’s a 16 percent government tax and even a 10 percent service charge added to the check at many of the local restaurants.  

3. Palawan, Philippines

June to November is the off-peak/monsoon season.  Which means that some afternoons there are heavy but short downpours.  If you visit before October, you’ll miss the heavier storms.

The hotels and airlines offer discounts as much as 80 percent.  El Nido and Puerto Princesa are right on the coast too.  The bungalows are low on luxury amenities but the beaches are free.  You can also explore the Tabon Caves and swim in the natural pool at the popular Estrella Falls for free too.

4. Bali, Indonesia

Avoid such southern locations as Seminyak, Ubud, and Kuta.  Stay in the central hills or somewhere up north where you’ll pay much less.  If you visit in the off-season though, you’ll save money wherever you stay.  

While it can be a bit rainy in March and April, you can get great deals on accommodations and airfares from October to April.  Veteran visitors confirm you’ll still have “plenty of sunshine” during your stay.  You can explore the beaches, mountains, palaces, rice paddies, and temples for free.

5. Luang Prabang, Laos

In Laos, you can grab a quick meal from a street stall for $2.00 or less.  Outside of Vientiane, even four-star accommodations will cost you roughly a third less than what you’d pay in Europe.  Visit from February through November and you’ll find lowers prices and smaller crowds.  

Visit the temples in Luang Prabang for free.  Hike nearby Mount Phu Si.  You can see the national monuments, the Great Stupa Temple, and the garden of Buddha statues in Vientiane for free too.

The ancient temples in Angkor Wat are famous but if you want an inexpensive tropical vacation, head to Koh Rong.  Resort prices here are cheaper than those in nearby Thailand or even Malaysia.  If you want to do more than kick back on the beach, fret not.  For what you’d spend for a night at the movies, here you can take a full-day boat tour, eat lunch in a local restaurant for an entire weekend, or even rent everything needed for a day of snorkeling.

7. Costa Rica

The best time to save money in Costa Rica is from May to mid-December during the rainy “green season.”  The truth is there are still enough sunny days to relax on the beach.  Stay outside of the tourist towns–Arenal and San Jose.  Most of the national parks charge a low entrance fee but you can spend the day hiking at the Volcano Arenal.  Avoid the guided hikes and simply follow the signs.  You can also go canoeing, horseback riding, or relax in the hot springs.

8. Koh Samui, Thailand

This popular beach destination experiences its low season from October through mid-December.  Avoid rainy afternoons by visiting in early December when it’s drier and sunnier.  You can get great prices on both airline tickets and hotels.  If you want to go scuba diving or snorkeling off the neighboring isle of Koh Tao visit from March to May (the shoulder season) when prices are great, you will avoid the rough seas and still be able to spot whale sharks close to the coast.

The village of Oia is located on the island’s northwest edge. The sunset here is world-famous. The village itself is both beautiful and picturesque. But you must see the sunset from the ancient ruins of the Agios Nikolaos castle.

2. Catch the caldera

Santorini’s natural beauty is largely due to its distinct terrain morphology. Witness the Santorini caldera, a large, mostly submerged cauldron-like hollow or sinkhole born of a powerful volcanic eruption, there in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. The caldera is found 120 kilometers (74+ miles) north of the isle of Crete in Greece.
