5.  Positano, Italy

The nigh-iconic village of Positano on the attractive Amalfi coastline appears to have almost tumbled neatly down the precipitous hillside. This colorful cliffside community was founded back in the 9th century. It has witnessed some tumultuous times, such as pirate attacks and a terrible tsunami in the 14th century. Today it is a rather elegant resort complete with steep, automobile-free streets, and sometimes pricey boutiques, art galleries, and assorted eateries.

6.  Azenhas do Mar, Portugal

Not far from the town of Sintra, is the seaside village of Azenhas do Mar. Balanced on a cliff above the Atlantic Ocean, it was once the home of several sea-powered water mills. Currently, it’s a quaint coastal escape complete with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. Be sure to see the sandy coves and numerous natural rock pools. Sample the local fresh seafood too.
