Experts say Cape Town is “one of South Africa’s most visited destinations.” One of the best places to spend New Year’s Eve there is the V & A Waterfront. Experience the culture and beauty of the city backdropped by iconic Table Mountain.

At the Waterfront, you can be a part of the excited crowd or quietly sip champagne at one of the numerous restaurants or cocktail bars. There’s plenty to do during the day and at night London has a famous firework display. It’s attended by over 100,000 people annually. Those in the know suggest getting tickets to see it from Tower Bridge.

Get out early and see the popular Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park. It’s still open and the crowd is smaller. Ride the rollercoaster; go ice skating and have a drink at the ice-bar. Buy souvenirs too.

6. Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik locals put on a traditional community fireworks show that is one of the best on the planet. The profits from all fireworks sales go to support ICE-SAR, (the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue.) Fireworks are set off way prior to midnight.

However, once the clock strikes twelve, there are additional fireworks going off from all around you. Head for the hills (where the famous Perlan is perched) for the best view. Jumping the waves is a local tradition that is said to bring one luck for the new year. Another fun local tradition is that everyone wears white at this event.

The fair is ensconced below the impressive Gothic Cathedral and the many stalls there offer numerous seasonal goods and handmade items. If you get homesick for some winter chill, you can stop in at the well-known Ice Bar. It features a sub-zero chamber complete with awesome ice sculptures. Even the drinking glasses are made out of ice!

Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt, Austria

Located in Rathausplatz, Vienna, this festive event begins on November 15 and runs through December 26. It’s Vienna’s most famous Christmas market. Get an eyeful of the huge Rathaus Christmas tree in the center of the market.

If you’re hankering for a few festive foods, you can sample cream-filled pastries, different kinds of pretzels, big donuts, roast chestnuts, and the traditional Victorian-style lollipops. The Christkindlmarkt is open every day but you really should visit at night when the assorted smells and colorful lights truly will give you the real Christmas market experience.

The Winter Wonders Festival, Belgium

The world-famous Winter Wonders Festival is held in Brussels. It runs from November 29 through January 5th.  Brussels, like other major metropolises, hosts more than one Christmas market. Veteran visitors suggest attending the one at the Grand-Place.

Advent Feast at the Basilica, Hungary

Visit Budapest between November 23 and January 6 and experience the Advent Feast at the Basilica. Located in front of the city’s most well-known cathedral, this open-air market has stalls offering visitors festive items and (of course) genuine Hungarian food too. Sample some chimney cake known as flódni for dessert. Be sure to be there at dark for the famous 3D light show right on the front of the famous St. Stephen’s Basilica.

4. In Memoriam: The Azure Window, Malta

Once found on Gozo Island, the once iconic Azure Window was a famous limestone arch. It was reportedly created when a pair of limestone caves collapsed due to sea erosion. Part of the rock regularly fell from beneath the arch for years. In fact, experts predicted its destruction based on its condition. While it finally fell into the sea during a raging storm on March 8, its memory and existing recent images still earned it a slot on our “top 10” list.

The Moon Hill arch can be found atop a 750-foot high hill just outside Yangshuo. Visible from a great distance, visitors can reach it after a 20-minute hike and even walk through the famous arch. More adventurous hikers may choose to climb to the very top of the arch. The view of the local surroundings is said to be excellent.

2. Shipton’s Arch, China

This arch was named in honor of the successful English mountaineer Eric Shipton. Shipton actually discovered it back in 1947. It is also known as Tushuk Tash, or in English Hole in Heaven.
The arch is situated in Xinjiang Province just northwest of Kashgar. Prior to Shipton’s arrival, it was known only to the locals.
