1. Multnomah Falls

Multnomah Falls is located in the Columbia River Gorge. It is not only the most popular waterfall but is the state’s highest one as well. It is 620 feet high.  

There are several exceptional hikes you can take in this area. More than one will take you to the waterfall. If you suddenly decide not to really hike, park in the main parking area at the base of the falls and take the short walking trail there. It is approximately 300 feet.

If you happen to be visiting Wahkeena Falls, you can take the A-B trail to Multnomah Falls. It’s less than five miles. If you wish to hike to the top of the falls, there is an additional trail that is under two miles long. The difficulty level here ranges between easy and moderate depending on your choices.

Toketee Falls

Recent research reports that most people slot the hike to Toketee Falls somewhere in the top three. This two-tiered waterfall in Douglas County includes one section that is roughly 30 feet high and another that is 85 feet in height. Again, you have choices here.

The hikes range from easy to moderate in level of difficulty. Remember though, as a rule, the more difficult the trek, the lower the tourist count. There is one easy trail near Idleyld Park that is nearly a mile out and back.  

It offers great views and requires less than half an hour to complete. Many tourists stop right here. However, if you continue for one-tenth of a mile, you will reach the base of the falls. The views are significantly better, and it requires only a little extra effort.

Latourell Falls

Latourell Falls is located in Guy W. Talbot State Park west of Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. No matter how you choose to hike to this beautiful natural attraction in Oregon, the hike will be easy. The total height of the falls is 249 feet. 

There is a family-friendly, accessible one-mile round trip walkway to the main Lower Falls. To reach the Upper Falls you will need to complete the full 2.1-mile loop trail hike. The best time to go to see Latourell Falls is generally from March through May when the falls are positively thundering thanks to the spring run-off.

The Tunnel Falls

The Tunnel Falls in Hood River County and the corresponding hike is both very popular in Oregon. It is thus named because anyone looking to reach it must go through a tunnel beneath the waterfall. Located along Oregon’s famous Eagle Creek Trail, it has a height of 172 feet.

In order to reach it, you must take a hard hike on a 12-mile loop trail from Eagle Creek. If you wish to take an even longer hike, you can pass the Tunnel Falls, circle clockwise and head north to the Wahclella Falls trail, and then follow the road to the Eagle Creek trailhead. You will see more this way but if you choose this option, you definitely want to make sure you take a current trail map.

The Lower Oneonta Falls

The falls are roughly 100 feet high. It is the narrowest fall in Oregon. The hike to reach this place in Oneonta Gorge is also one of the most scenic here.  

The hike here will include hiking through a gorge and even through some water. It is otherwise an easy and sometimes crowded hike of under one mile in and out. In fact, you need to plan your trip or you may discover that there is a closure and never reach your destination.

Shellburg Falls

You will discover Shellburg Falls in the verdant Santiam State Forest, just south of Portland. Your drive from the city should be less than an hour. Shellburg Falls is 100 feet high. Here the water rushes right over a massive rock cliff.

You can probably reach the base providing there are not too many people there. There is a cave that will actually take you directly beneath the falls reminiscent of the Catskill Mountains’ Kaaterskill Falls. The hike is an easy one that is two and a half miles out and back.

Watson Falls

Some veteran visitors compare Douglas County’s Watson Falls to Shellburg Falls. Sources don’t all agree, but it is between 272 and 293 feet tall. It is one of the three highest in Oregon and the highest in the Umpqua National Forest.  

The surrounding rock wall is also quite striking. The corresponding trail allows you to hike right to the base. There is no cave though unlike the Shellburg Falls hike. Of course, since the hike is less than one mile in and out and Watson Falls is almost three times as high as Shellburg Falls, who cares, right?

Tumalo Falls

If you are anywhere near the town of Bend, you simply must check out Tumalo Falls. It is located just west of the quaint town in the lush Deschutes National Forest. Tumalo Falls is approximately 100 feet high.

It is arguably the only large waterfall on this specific list that is actually “out in the open” and is part of the local scenery. The other waterfalls featured here in this article are actually a bit deeper in the forest. Some may say Tumalo Falls is a bit similar to a couple of other more popular waterfalls.  

One is located in the Canadian Rockies, and the other is found in well-known Yellowstone National Park. The hike to Tumalo Falls is less than seven miles in and out and it is rated as “hard.”

White River Falls

Head to White River Falls State Park in north central Oregon. This is the shortest and easiest waterfall hike on this list. The hike is only about one-quarter of a mile. Mind you, once you get there you may agree with many travel writers who consider this the most beautiful waterfall in the state.  

This two-tiered waterfall is a good 90 feet high and divides into different areas. If you need more exercise, the surrounding state park also includes a number of different trails you can explore. While the park is open all year, the best time to visit is in spring. The waterfall’s flow generally slows to a comparative trickle in the fall and in the winter the flush toilets and, more importantly, the park’s main parking lot are closed.

Abiqua Falls

Abiqua Falls is located south of Portland and near the town known as Scott Mills. Some visitors to Oregon say that Abiqua Falls looks a lot like the previously mentioned Toketee Falls. There are, however, some significant differences between the falls and the surrounding areas.  

The two hikes are also different. Oddly, while Abiqua Falls is high on the list in terms of natural beauty, the trail to it, while only moderately difficult, is reportedly one of the least hiked in Oregon. This also means that you will have some privacy while hiking to this 92-foot-tall natural attraction.  

After parking your vehicle on a dirt road, you will hike for less than one mile. Nevertheless, this short jaunt is slippery and strenuous. The best time to visit is from March to October.

Lemolo Falls

With a height of 165 feet, Lemolo Falls are located just outside the town of Chemult. The hiking trail to the falls is two and a half miles out and back. It is a moderately difficult hike with an elevation gain of 600 feet and thus is not very popular with tourists. If you’re not feeling energetic, you can take the short trail on the north side of the North Umpqua River which leads to a memorable lookout spot.

The Trail Of Ten Falls

The Trail of Ten Falls in Silver Falls State Park is perhaps one of the best examples of waterfall hiking trails anywhere in the state of Oregon. This trail includes 10 waterfalls. Most of them are over 100 feet high.

The trail is easy to navigate although lengthy It is nine miles out and back with additional distance added to and from each individual waterfall. It is rated moderately difficult mainly because of the total distance involved. (If you’re feeling athletic there is a longer loop trail hike, but you don’t get to see all the falls.) Some of the waterfalls here even include caves. Some are accessible from base to top too.  In general, the best time to visit most waterfalls is in the spring or early summer during the run-off.

Spray Falls, Mount Rainier National Park

Spray Falls is in the northwest Mowich Lake area of the park. You’ll have to hike for 2.25 miles to reach the 350+-foot waterfall. The journey begins on a section of the well-known Wonderland Trail. It’s perhaps most known for being the only trail that actually circles massive Mount Rainier.

The trail will lead you past the popular Eagle’s Cliff overlook, which offers hikers an exceptional view. Follow the short spur trail and soon you will notice a misty cloud for which the waterfall gets its name. If you want a closer look, you will have to work your way around some huge boulders.  

Make a day of hiking to and from the falls. You can even follow the trail beyond the falls into Spray Park’s alpine meadows. Visit during the summer and enjoy the wildflowers in full bloom.

Palouse Falls, Palouse Falls State Park

Palouse Falls is an ice-age waterfall found in Eastern Washington, roughly 40 miles out of Walla Walla. Also, the official state waterfall; it includes a drop of 200 feet, a huge bowl, and a striking gorge. Franklin Falls, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

Nestled in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in King County, this is reported to be “one of the best waterfalls” close to Seattle. The hike to the waterfall is short and with only minimal elevation gain. It’s a short hike on a well-maintained trail.

Thus, it’s also a well-liked family waterfall hike that runs along the Snoqualmie River’s south fork. The water here thunders down 135 feet over a trio of tiers. Only the final 70 feet can be seen from the trail.

You can get closer to the pool beneath the pool but know that the path is slippery. Visit in the summer. It’s the perfect place to chill out.

The Spokane Falls, Spokane

This pair of waterfalls is considered by some travel writers to be a nigh-defining attraction of Riverfront Park and one of the country’s “best urban waterfalls.” Located in the heart of downtown Spokane, both the Upper and Lower Spokane Falls have a long local history. This, too, was an important place for native gatherings. Today the city uses them to create hydroelectric power.  

Amidst all the urban development, the falls continue to be a real tourist attraction. Huntington Park, near City Hall, is a fine place to see the lower falls on land. Riverfront Park’s popular SkyRide features an exciting enclosed-cabin cable ride over the lower falls as well. You’ll get your best views of Upper Falls from a pair of pedestrian bridges.

Whatcom Falls, Bellingham

Whatcom Falls is not only one of the city’s top attractions, but it is also the centerpiece of a popular park of the same name. Washington state’s Whatcom Falls Park welcomes visitors via a well-known Civilian Conservation Corps-era bridge. More importantly, this bridge also is an excellent place from which to see the falls.

If you want to see picturesque Whatcom Creek and other areas here, try hiking the three-plus miles of trails traversing the park. Visit the park’s fish hatchery, and go swimming in the swimming hole too. Other amenities here include interpretive displays, a playground, and picnic shelters.

The Twin Falls, Olallie State Park

Twin Falls in Washington is under an hour from Seattle in Olallie State Park. The hike to see the famous 165-foot waterfall is just two and a half miles. The trailhead is adjacent to the Snoqualmie River’s south fork.  

Ah, but the Twin Falls is not the only water attraction in this state park. You can hike an even shorter trail to the South Fork Picnic Area and the 77-foot-high Weeks Falls. You can also go mountain biking here. Hiking aficionados may also find it good to know that a section of the 212-mile popular Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail runs through this park as well.

Marymere Falls, Olympic National Park

Marymere Falls is nestled in the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. It’s one of the park’s most popular waterfalls and is easily accessible. The trailhead for the hike to the falls is on the peninsula’s north side, roughly half an hour’s drive west of Port Angeles on famous Highway 101.

The trailhead is also close to Lake Crescent’s shoreline. The hike itself is under two miles out and back. The trail is generally flat and leads you through a verdant, old-growth forest. Pack a lunch and rest and enjoy it at this 90-foot waterfall. You should be able to complete the hike itself in less than an hour but the scenery and, of course, the falls will discourage you from setting any speed records.

Panther Creek Falls, Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Looking for another family-friendly hike in Washington? Panther Creek Falls is located just 10 miles north of the rugged Columbia River Gorge. Your outdoor adventure begins at Forest Service Road 65.  

From there it is under half a mile to the falls. Here the water plummets down almost 70 feet into a blue, churning pool. There is also a number of higher rivulets that cascade down the face of the rock, adding even more to the overall beauty.

Need more? This area of the Pacific Northwest is fairly famous for its waterfalls. Not far away, you can visit the towering three-tiered Falls Creek Falls. Head south, and stop at the Columbia River Gorge. It’s home to many of Oregon’s best waterfalls, most notably the 620-foot-high Multnomah Falls.

Wallace Falls, Wallace Falls State Park

The cascading attraction known as Wallace Falls is nestled within the state park of the same name, less than an hour out of Seattle. You can reach this 265-foot waterfall via a moderately trafficked trail that’s 4.6 miles out and back. There is an elevation gain of more than 1,300 feet to the upper falls.  

Much of this is the result of steep switchbacks towards the end of your destination. If you’d prefer less of a hike, you can see the middle falls prior to where the trail takes the first steep turn. If you visit in the summer, you’d best head out early to avoid the crowds.

Iron Creek Falls, Gifford Pinchot National Forest

This wild waterfall is ensconced within the lush Gifford Pinchot National Forest just northeast of famous Mount St. Helens. You can reach this waterfall from Forest Service Road 25. It’s just a steep, tenth-of-a-mile to the creek and falls.

The best time to visit is in the late spring or early summer. This is when Iron Creek Falls flows the heaviest. Indeed, as summer makes its way to fall, the shore around the pool here becomes easier to explore. If you want to spend more time here you can even camp out at the Iron Creek Campground 10 miles north along Forest Service Road 25.

Tumwater Falls, Brewery Park

The iconic multi-tiered landmark along the Deschutes River is just minutes out of the state capital of Olympia in the 15-acre park donated by the well-known Olympia Brewing Company. A narrow gorge separates the upper and lower falls. This place is especially popular on summer afternoons.  

This is a maintained green space that also includes 1.5 miles of hiking trails. You can enjoy high vantage points of the cascading water from a number of different scenic footbridges here. Gullfoss Falls, Iceland

Gullfoss is Icelandic for “Golden Falls.” Nestled in the canyon of the Hvítá River, it is reported to be very popular with tourists and day trippers alike. Along with the geysers of Haukadalur and Þingvellir, it is part of the popular Golden Circle attraction.  

Thus, it is a part of the majority of tours in Iceland. Gullfoss Falls is also an official UNESCO World Heritage Site more famous for its beauty than its deadliness. Arguably the most famous falls in the world, this trio of thunderous, wide cascades are situated in New York State near Buffalo and crash across the US border into the country of Canada. Shomyo-Daki, Japan 

The previously mentioned Shomyo-Daki, like its neighbor Hannoki-no-taki, can be found in the town of Tateyama, in the Toyama Prefecture. It is officially the highest waterfall in Japan. It is 350 meters high (or 1,148 feet). These falls actually have four separate stages.

The first is70 meters high. The second is 58 meters. The third is 96 meters and the final is 126 meters. The best time to visit is between early and mid-summer. That’s when the snow up in the Tateyama Mountains melts. The lake at the very bottom is over 6 meters deep.

Langfossen Falls, Norway

Travel to the municipality of Etne. For it is here that you will find Langfossen Falls. In English, the name means “Long Falls.”

Situated east of San Francisco, Yosemite is home to a plethora of pretty waterfalls. Yosemite Falls, which drops 2,425 feet, is one of the world’s highest waterfalls. The best time to visit is usually May through June when most of the snow melts. If you visit in late spring, you can see the Yosemite Falls moonbow. (For those not in the know, a moonbow is a lunar rainbow that is actually created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.) Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Most people probably don’t think about waterfalls when they think of the Grand Canyon, and yet Havasu Falls is truly an oasis within this arid, unforgiving landscape. It’s arguably one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the planet and is found in the Havasupai Indian Reservation, west of the Grand Canyon Village’s main tourist area on the South Rim. The Havasupai Tribe runs the reservation and getting to the falls requires some planning.  

Permits sell out quickly and you can make reservations starting in February. Day hiking is not permitted so plan on camping overnight. The best time to visit is in the spring.

Lovely Lower Doyles River Falls is perhaps the most beautiful waterfall in this park. Mind you, there are several stunning waterfalls here. The most easily accessible and popular of them all is Dark Hollow Falls.

If you’re up for an invigorating day hike past several waterfalls, head for Whiteoak Canyon. The trailheads are all found on surprisingly scenic Skyline Drive. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio

Nestled deep in the woods of this underrated national park, is beautiful Blue Hen Falls. You have to hike a short trail in but it’s nothing strenuous. Aside from the scenic waterfalls here, these protected lands also include noteworthy natural scenery, and wildlife too.

If you prefer, you can rent a bicycle here or even climb aboard the popular Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to explore the park. The best time to visit is in the spring and fall. Be sure to see Brandywine Falls too!

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Idaho, And Montana

There is a trio of memorable waterfalls here in Yellowstone. Upper Yellowstone Falls (pictured) is but one of them. This vast national park is one of the best to visit in the spring. It is famous for more than waterfalls.

Glacier National Park, Montana

Despite climate change, there are still approximately 37 glaciers here in Glacier National Park. While the glacial melt continues to feed lakes and streams here, the window to see waterfalls here is relatively narrow. Olympic National Park, Washington

This park has everything needed for waterfall hunting including epic coastlines, massive mountain ranges, and primeval forests. There’s also plenty of water and a lot of places where it can go rushing down. The Sol Duc Falls is reported to be one of the park’s top attractions. Other waterfalls worth checking out include Donahue Creek, Madison, Marymere, and Royal Basin. Be sure you visit sometime in the spring or early fall.

No matter how often we see them (or even write about them), waterfalls are always a favorite.  Maybe it’s the crash of the water as it thunders down from high above or the sight of the falls as in their entirety.  Whatever the case, here are the 30 most beautiful waterfalls in the USA.  

1. The Multnomah Falls, Oregon

You’ll discover the Multnomah Falls, about 30 minutes out of Portland.  It’s the tallest waterfall in the state.  It’s 611 feet high.  

The surrounding area is also Instagrammable.  Magnificent Multnomah Falls are ensconced amidst sprouting maple trees and basalt cliffs.  The falls are spanned by the well-known stone arches of Benson Bridge which was constructed back in 1914.

Mesa Falls, Idaho

Mesa Falls is 115 feet high.  Here, near the city of Ashton, you’ll witness the water washing over the results of an old volcanic eruption at the neighboring Upper Mesa Falls prior to its traveling downriver for a mile to the Lower Mesa Falls.  Watch as the waters of Snake River flow through the solidified ash and lava there.

Cumberland Falls, Kentucky

Cumberland Falls are known to some as the “Niagara of the South.”  Take in the sight of the water dropping 125 feet to crash into the gorge.  If you’d like to see a moonbow the best time to visit is during a full moon.  This is one of the only places in the world where you enjoy an actual lunar rainbow.

The McWay Falls, California

Big Sur is one of the best portions of California’s beautiful coastline.  With the redwood and pine-clad cliffs, lovely beaches, and the Pacific Ocean, a waterfall would have to be something special to actually stand out here.  The majestic McWay Falls pours 80+ feet from the rugged bluffs at popular Julia Pfeiffer State Park, before emptying onto the fine, honey-hued sand.

Tahquamenon Falls, Michigan

Grand Falls, Arizona

You’ll find Grand Falls in the striking Painted Desert in Navajo Nation close to Flagstaff.  This waterfall is 181 feet high.  Of course, what is special about it is not its height but its color.  Nicknamed the Chocolate Falls, the water is actually an appetizing and unusual milk chocolate hue.  This isn’t Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory though as the color is caused by sediment.

The Palouse Falls, Washington

The 200-foot tall Palouse Falls are situated in southeastern Washington.  If you look at the falls from the right angle, you might think the water is coming right out of the rocks.  In fact, the water comes from the Palouse River.  Deemed the state’s official waterfall, this cascade was actually created by various floods that occurred back during the Ice Age.

Yosemite Falls, California

This is the continental USA’s tallest waterfall.  It is a favorite tourist stop in popular Yosemite National Park and the water here drops 2,425 feet.  Yosemite Falls features three different sections amidst the meadows and granite cliffs.  Upper Yosemite Fall is reportedly one of the highest on the planet and rushed from a height of 1430 feet above the ground.

St. Mary Falls, Montana

St. Mary Falls comes complete with multiple tiers.  The falls are found in Montana’s magnificent Glacier National Park and have three individual levels.  The trio of levels actually zig-zag over the gorgeous gorge’s red-tinged rock.  The water empties into an exceptional aquamarine pool.  While the neighboring Virginia Falls is noisier and higher, St. Mary Falls won out for its multiple levels.

Ruby Falls, Tennessee

Ruby Falls is literally a 145-foot tall, sheer waterfall that plummets through a shaft deep within Lookout Mountain into a cave.  The waterfall is lit by LED lights and fed by a comparatively deep subterranean stream. It is also an official part of Chattanooga’s Lookout Mountain Caverns complex.  It was discovered by Leo Lambert in 1928.  He named it for his spouse, Ruby.

Ramona Falls, Oregon

Lower Calf Creek Falls, Utah

This is perhaps one of the nation’s most unique waterfalls.  You can actually see two falls in Calf Creek, off Scenic Byway 12.  There are the upper and the lower falls.  While they are both attractive, the Lower Calf Creek Falls surges a total of 126 feet down the mineral-stained sandstone into a gorgeous, great, green-tinted swimming hole.

Snoqualmie Falls, Washington

You’ll find Snoqualmie Falls off the bustling I-90 interstate close to Seattle.  The roar of the water is so tumultuous it can reportedly “drown out” the honking hub-bub of the traffic.  Snoqualmie is actually a Salish term for “moon.”  Despite the mighty 268-foot cascade, this has been a spiritual spot for 100s of years.  It was featured in the  television program “Twin Peaks.”

The caramel-colored, captivating Brandywine Falls are found in the rambling, thickly forested Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  the water plunges down 60 feet.  If you visit during the drier months you will be able to spot a specific bridal veil pattern upon the rocks.  Stay in the area during the winter, you might notice how it strangely freezes in mid-flow.

Rainbow Falls is perhaps the best of the 19 different falls found in New York’s Watkins Glen State Park.  It is named for the way the afternoon sunlight actually infuses the stunning, shimmering sheet of freshwater with a cornucopia of colors.  Visit in the winter and you’ll see the scintillating sculptures created by the frozen falls.

Havasu Falls, Arizona

Last but not least, is this world-famous Grand Canyon waterfall features a combo of colors that make it a “must-see.”  The pink and orange rocks truly become even more vibrant when seen along with the blue-green water in the pool below it.  It is only one of the five separate waterfalls you can see on the well-known Havasupai Indian Reservation.
