Olympic National Park features four main areas. They are the park’s northern region which includes popular Hurricane Ridge, the rainforest, the Pacific Coastline, and the well-known Staircase. Without further ado, here are the 17 best hikes in Olympic National Park.

1. Hurricane Ridge Trail to Hurricane Hill

You will need two hours to complete this 3.2-mile hike. It is rated easy to moderate and has a total ascent of 700 feet. This hike is even good if you’re traveling with older kids.

Park your car in the parking lot located at Hurricane Ridge Road’s end. Don’t park close to the official Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center unless you want to add almost two and a half miles to the hike. The trailhead should be marked. 

This is a wide trail that eventually runs along a ridge and slowly gains elevation. There are some switchbacks near the end of the hike as you climb to the peak but it’s not strenuous. The view is spectacular.

2. Hike to Sunrise Ridge via the Sunrise Point Trail

This is another easy-to-moderate hike that offers hikers more incredible views out over Hurricane Ridge. It has a total distance of three miles and a total ascent of 800 feet. Give yourself two hours for this hike.

Park at Hurricane Ridge’s main parking lot. This memorable hike begins on the popular High Ridge Trail. The trail will lead you up to a noteworthy viewpoint and then continues east toward massive Mount Angeles. Now you need to watch yourself as this is where the name of this hiking trail actually changes.  

For no official reason, it is given two different monikers: the Klahhane Ridge Trail and the Sunrise Point Trail. Nevertheless, the beautiful panoramic views on this hike are worth a little confusion. The hike ends at an overlook where you can enjoy a striking view of Mount Angeles.

3. Hike Klahhane Ridge Trail to Mount Angeles

Interested in actually hiking to Mount Angeles? If so, prepare for a strenuous hike with a total ascent of 2,551 feet. It’s 6.5 miles and you’ll need between four to six hours to complete it.

This specific hike is actually an extension of the previously mentioned Sunrise Ridge Trail hike. If you want to hike to the highest peak in the area and enjoy one of the park’s best panoramic views, this is the hike for you, fellow hikers. You begin this hike at the official Hurricane Ridge parking lot.

Hike east along the earlier mentioned Klahhane Ridge Trail–also named the Sunrise Point Trail–to Sunrise Ridge and beyond. You will next experience a moderate descent. Now here’s the interesting part.

In order to actually reach the very top of Mount Angeles, you must now complete a very steep hike. It comes complete with some fairly tricky rock scrambling as well. Ah, but from high atop of Mount Angeles, the views are said to be just plain unbeatable. Complete the hike on a clear day and you will be able to see Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, Vancouver Island, and Olympic National Park’s mountains.

4. The Marymere Falls Hike

This is an easy hike with a total ascent of just 200 feet. It has a distance of under two miles and should only require one hour to finish. Veteran visitors say it is a sweet, short hike to see this beautiful waterfall that’s nestled deep inside a verdant old-growth forest. Most of this hike to Marymere Falls is surprisingly fast, flat, and, in terms of scenery, quite memorable.  

It features bridges spanning streams and creeks and an ancient forest of moss-covered trees looming overhead. There is, however, a brief, technically strenuous uphill climb to a great viewpoint of the waterfall. This hike can also be a nice little addition to the hike to Mount Storm King since both hikes start at the same trailhead. They both begin at the popular Lake Crescent which is nestled right next to the official Storm King Ranger Station.

5. The Mount Storm King Hike

Get pumped up, people! This hike is one of the best hikes in the entire park. This hike may be under five miles but it is rated strenuous. It has a total ascent of 2,130 feet and you will need between three to five hours to complete it. 

Despite the fact that those in the know call it a comparatively short yet “grueling” hike, it ends with a stunningly memorable view of lovely Lake Crescent and is one of the most popular hikes in the park as well.  

Not only is this a steep, challenging, and nigh-relentless climb up to majestic Mount Storm King, but just before you get to the actual summit, the trail gets steeper still. You will actually need to use a number of ropes. After that, you must survive one brief, last scramble to Mount Storm King’s peak. The hike to Marymere Falls can be added to the start or finish of this hike.

6. The Sol Duc Falls Hike

If you’d prefer an easy hike, try this 2.25-mile hike. It has a total ascent of just 320 feet and might take an hour to finish. For those not in the know, Sol Duc Falls is a striking waterfall that is found deep amidst Olympic National Park’s temperate rainforest.  

Hop in your car and take the well-marked Sol Duc Road to its end. Park in the parking lot there. From there it’s just a comparatively quick round-trip walk to the wonderful waterfall.

7. Hike High Divide Trail and the Seven Lakes Basin Loop

Up for a challenge? This strenuous hike has a total distance of 19 miles and a total ascent of 5,000 feet, this hike requires between 10 to 14 hours to complete. In fact, you may wish to make an overnight backpacking trip out of this one.

You begin this adventure at striking Sol Duc Falls. From there, you hike past distinctive Deer Lake and head into the subalpine region. You will see a total of seven lovely lakes on this hike and might even see black bears and other assorted local wildlife as well. If you do decide to camp overnight on this trek you will have to get a permit ahead of time and be sure you know all the precautions to take when you camp anywhere that bears may bed down too.

8. The Cape Flattery Hike

Let’s try another easy one now, shall we? For those not in the know, Cape Flattery is officially the northernmost place in the entire continental United States. More specifically it is situated at the spot where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets the Pacific Ocean.  

This is an easy hike with a total ascent of only 200 feet. It has a distance of only 1.5 miles. You should be able to do it in an hour. The hiking trail itself actually alternates between boardwalks, a dirt trail, and a gravel trail all the way up to three exceptional viewpoints of the famous Cape Flattery.

9. The Shi Shi Beach Hike

If you’d like to spend some time at one of the park’s most beautiful beaches, where you can see not only tide pools but distinguishing pinnacles, this hike is perfect for your hiking bucket list. You can do it as a lengthy day hike or turn it into an overnight backpacking adventure. 

Depending on how far you wish to hike down the beach, the distance will vary between six and 10 miles. Still, this hike is rated easy, with only a minimal ascent.  

It should only require a total of four to six hours in total to finish it. It is also important to know that while the beach is situated within Olympic National Park actual access to the beach is via the Makah Reservation. You will need to pay the park’s fee and get a Makah Recreation Pass as well.

10. Hike Rialto Beach to Hole-in-the-Wall

The hike to Hole-in-the-Wall is another of the best hikes in this park. It is rated as an easy hike with a total distance of 3.5 miles. The ascent is minimal and it will take between 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

You will actually be hiking on the beach and the views are said to be “amazing.” Just drive to Rialto Beach and park in the parking area there, right alongside the beach. Hit the beach and head north. Enjoy the view of the well-known sea stacks that sit on the rugged coastline there.

11. The Third Beach Hike

To understand the name of this hike, you have to know something about the area. There is a trio of beaches near the town of La Push. They are actually named the First, Second, and Third Beach. (First Beach is the northernmost of these beaches and Third Beach is the most remote.)

The Third Beach Hike is an easy, three-mile hike with an ascent of 400 feet. Allow up to two hours for this one. The trail takes you through a verdant forest. It is generally an easy, flat trail but take a talkative hiking buddy as some say hiking through all these trees can be a little monotonous. Ah, but once you hit the beach, the view is quite nice!

12. The Ruby Beach Hike

Ruby Beach is a popular and easily accessible beach in Olympic National Park. It is named after the striking ruby-colored crystals that are in the sand there. This hike to the beach is six miles in length.  

It is an easy hike with a minimal ascent. Give yourself three hours for this one. For a quick visit, park your vehicle in the big parking area then head downhill to the beach. In order to make it an actual hike, you simply go north along sand ‘til you hit Hoh River. That makes it a six-mile hike round trip.

There are two hiking trails you can take through the Hoh Rainforest. They both begin at one parking lot. Perhaps more importantly, they are both considered easy and are both reported to be “essential” when it comes to fully experiencing Olympic National Park.

13. The Hall of Mosses Hike

This hike is just under one mile. It’s an easy hike with minimal ascent and might take you half an hour at the most. The popular Hall of Mosses hiking trail loops through some of the area’s oldest trees. As you might gather from its name, this is also one of the park’s best places to take pictures of the moss hanging off of the trees there.

14. Hike The Spruce Nature Trail

This is one of the easiest and best hikes in the park. It’s a 1.2-mile loop trail with minimal ascent. It should take you no more than 45 minutes to finish.

It is highlighted by memorable views of the Hoh River and the local rainforest. If you are bothered by crowds, you will be pleased to know that this hiking trail is normally significantly less crowded than the previously mentioned Hall of Mosses. Animal lovers will also be happy to know you might be able to spot a black bear on this trail too.

15. The Staircase Rapids Loop

This is an easy hike of just under three miles. It includes a total accent of 285 feet. You will need between one and a half to two hours to finish it.

This hiking trail runs along the Skokomish River’s North Fork. It takes you through a temperate, lush rainforest and comes complete with exceptional views of both rapids and waterfalls. Veteran visitors say this is a beautiful place to be. Typically speaking, as this goes to press anyway, you typically do not see a lot of other hikers here on this trail either. It offers views much like those found in the Hoh Rainforest, huge moss-covered trees complete with lichen.

16. The Mount Ellinor Hike

Also on our list of best hikes in this park, is this challenging hike. It has a distance of between 3.2 to 6.2 miles. Depending on your specific choices, the total ascent is a minimum of 2,400 feet but could go as high as 3,300 feet. Thus, you need to set aside at least three hours if not five.

Your reward here is the pretty panoramic views out over the well-known Olympic Peninsula and beyond to Mount Baker and Mount Rainier. Mount Ellinor is one of Olympic National Park’s highest mountains. It’s located on the park’s eastern side.  

You actually have a choice of two hiking strategies in order to reach Mount Ellinor’s peak. One is a hike that has more of a gradual ascent but is longer. The other is shorter in length but is significantly steep. Of course, as it is with many hikes, you want to avoid heading out when it is especially cloudy or even drizzly. You want to be able to see you can in Olympic Park everything when you get to the top so clarity is king here.

17. Hike East Fork Quinault River Trail to Enchanted Valley

Last but certainly not least on this list of best hikes in the park, is this two to four-day adventure. It encompasses a distance of 26 miles and is rated as strenuous. Your journey begins near lovely Lake Quinault.

This is an exciting overnight backpacking trip where you hike to the Enchanted Valley Chalet. You take the popular East Fork Quinault River Trail for 13 miles. You hike through lush, old-growth forest ‘til you arrive at the chalet.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife too. You may very well spot bears, coyotes, deer, elk, and even mountain lions as you hike this trail. Your best bet is to consider this a fun overnight backpacking trip.

Get an Olympic permit ahead of time. With your permit, you will be able to camp overnight at Enchanted Valley, O’Neil Creek, Pony Bridge, or Pyrites Creek. Be aware that as this goes to press, the national park service may have decided to tear down and remove the old chalet.

Hikes Along The Going-to-the-Sun Road

The Going-to-the-Sun Road reportedly twists and turns through majestic mountain scenery for roughly 50 miles. At the end is Logan Pass. This is the approximate trailhead area for a pair of hikes listed here. Many visitors, especially first-timers, spend a lot of time on this road.

1. The Avalanche Lake Hike

This is a 4.6-mile round-trip hike. It is rated as easy to moderate and has a total ascent of 500 feet. Give yourself up to three hours to complete it.  

The specific trailhead for this hike is near Lake McDonald at the 0.7-mile loop Trail of the Cedars. The Avalanche Lake is a lot different than the majority of the other hikes on this list. While a lot of the hikes in this park include panoramic views of massive mountain peaks and alpine trails, this hike actually runs through a thick forest next to Avalanche Creek.

In essence, it’s a comparatively quiet trail through the verdant woods that ends at a lovely lake. Stick to the boardwalk trail through the dense cedar forest and be sure to take a look at Avalanche Gorge as well. At the top of the loop trail, you will be able to follow signs to the lake. While the walk to the lake is generally uphill, it’s not strenuous and the lake is quite photogenic and perfect for a picnic.

2. The Hidden Lake Overlook Hike

This popular hike is rated easy and has a total distance of under three miles. It has an ascent of 460 feet and should take no more than an hour and a half to finish. This hike starts right at Logan Pass itself.

The trail is a mix of gravel trails and boardwalk and leads to the above-mentioned Hidden Lake. Keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats as you go. It is one of the best places in the entire park to spot them. If you’d rather not stop at the overlook and continue on the lake itself, it only adds another 2.4 miles to your total hiking distance.

3. Hike The Highline Trail

This hike is rated as moderately difficult. It has a total distance of under 12 miles with a total ascent of 3,000 feet. Despite its length and rating, it’s one of the best hikes here.  Allow yourself between five and seven hours for this one.

This hike also begins at Logan Pass and is mainly a downhill hike. Here you will be hiking high above the well-known Going-to-the-Sun Road. The views are stunning and you will see multiple glaciers, pretty wildflowers, and maybe even some wildlife.

This is a point-to-point hike. It goes from popular Logan Pass to the Loop. It’s a popular hike because you can enjoy high alpine views without actually having to hike all the way up any massive mountains.

4. Hike To The Virginia And St. Mary Falls

Veteran visitors suggest hiking to both falls on the same day. The round trip distance to Virginia Falls is 3.8 miles. The hike to St. Mary Falls is 2.4 miles. There is an elevation gain of 285 feet hiking to Virginia Falls and a loss of 260 feet to St. Mary Falls.

The hikes are easy. You should reach St. Mary Falls in an hour and Virginia Falls in two hours. Set aside three hours and do them both on one hike.

Start the hike at the official St. Mary Falls Trailhead or at the St. Mary Falls Shuttle Stop. Here you will hike a trail located right next to a portion of St. Mary Lake and through a recovering forest that was burned back in 2015. Once you reach the two-tiered St. Mary Falls, take in the sight and hike onto Virginia Falls.

If you are driving yourself, start at the St. Mary Falls Trailhead and park in the little parking lot on Going-to-the-Sun Road. If you’re not driving or can’t find a parking space there, then the shuttle at the previously-mentioned St. Mary Falls Shuttle Stop. Taking the shuttle shaves almost half a mile off your total hiking distance.  

The Hikes In Many Glacier

Many Glacier is said by some to be “a hiker’s paradise” and one of the park’s most beautiful areas. It is highlighted by glaciers, lakes, snow-covered mountains, and waterfalls too.

5. The Apikuni Falls Hike

Next on our list of best hikes in this park is this two-mile, easy-to-moderate hike. It has a total ascent of 700 feet and should not take more than one hour to complete. The trailhead is at the Apikuni Parking Area. Those in the know say it is popular not only because of the falls but also because it is comparatively short and close to the well-known Many Glacier Hotel.

6. Hike To Cracker Lake

Cracker Lake is one of the park’s most beautiful lakes. This aquamarine lake is nestled amidst wildflower-carpeted mountains and grassy slopes. Ah, but the hike to this lake is strenuous. It is almost 13 miles round trip and has a total ascent of 1,400 feet.  

Give yourself between six and eight hours to complete it. This hike also begins in the parking lot of the Many Glacier Hotel. Those in the know note that the first few miles of this specific trail double as a horse trail so it can be rutted and muddy. Watch where you step!

7. The Grinnell Glacier Hike

Another great albeit strenuous hike in this park, is this nearly 11-mile adventure. It includes a total ascent of 1,600 feet so set aside between five to seven hours to finish this one. This hike features alpine scenery, emerald green lakes, waterfalls, a good chance to spot bears, moose, or mountain goats, and, unsurprisingly, a glacier. You can start the hike at Lake Josephine or the Grinnell Glacier Trailhead on Continental Divide Trail. Choosing the former option will shorten the hike because with this option you board a boat across both Swiftcurrent Lake and lovely Lake Josephine.

8. Hike To Iceberg Lake

This is another strenuous but worthy hike. It has a total distance of almost 10 miles and a total ascent of 1,200 feet so set aside between five and seven hours for this one. The trailhead here is at the comfy Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.

This hike to Iceberg Lake utilizes the same trail taken on the way to Ptarmigan Tunnel. Just like the previous hike on the list, it features alpine views, a beautiful alpine lake, and colorful wildflowers too. Unlike the hike to Grinnell Glacier, however, this trail takes you into official grizzly bear territory, so pack bear spray, make a lot of noise, and hike in groups.

9. The Ptarmigan Tunnel Hike

Before you head out on this hike, be sure you are up for a strenuous hike that has a total distance of over 10 miles. It has a total ascent of 2,300 feet and requires between five to seven hours to complete. Just like the previous hike on this list, the trailhead here is at the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.

Additionally, this hike also uses the trail leading to Iceberg Lake. Halfway to the lake though, you break off to the right onto the trail to the popular Ptarmigan Tunnel. It is here you will definitely notice the trail getting steeper and more strenuous.

Ah, but pause to enjoy the amazing alpine views. You will hike through Ptarmigan Tunnel near the end of this hike. The tunnel was actually blown out of the rugged rock here back in the 1930s.

You will see more memorable views of the park from the tunnel’s far end. Not into crowds? Then you’ll be happy to learn that this specific trail is not as popular as those to Iceberg or Cracker Lakes.

Hikes In Two Medicine

Travel writers report that the Two Medicine area is probably not quite as popular as Many Glacier or Going-to-the-Sun Road. Still, the hiking trails and scenery are arguably just as jaw-dropping. Plus, since it generally gets fewer hikers, it has more of that “off-the-beaten-path” feel.

The last “best hike” here is this strenuous, 14.8-mile loop trek that requires seven to nine hours to complete. Your journey begins at the North Shore Trailhead conveniently close to Two Medicine Campground. Head towards Pitamakan Pass, circle ‘round Rising Wolf Mountain, and cross the narrow ridge known as “the Saddle.” Pass Dawson Pass ‘til you reach Two Medicine Lake. Famous for its rugged, rust rock columns, a.k.a. Hoodoos, this park has a unique landscape. Visit the various viewpoints along the rim and don’t miss Bryce Point, Inspiration Point, Sunrise Point, and Sunset Point. Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

Most people visit this park in the summer or the early fall. In May, the weather is mild and the temperature never goes higher than 71 degrees Fahrenheit. One disadvantage to visiting in May is that the ranger-led tours to the well-known cliff dwellings here are only available during the park’s peak season.

Nevertheless, some of the tours do run in May and the tour of the famous Cliff Palace is available at the end of the month. Additionally, there are fewer people there in May than in the summer. Drive the scenic road, enjoy the overlooks, and check out the Wetherill Mesa area. 

Wetherill Mesa Road opens at the start of the month so you can bike or hike the popular five-mile Long House Loop. Tour Balcony House too. If you visit later in the month, you can take the ranger-led tour of Long House as well.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

In May the average high temperature is 86 degrees Fahrenheit. While veteran visitors can confirm it can sometimes be a bit hotter, it is actually a dry heat so it doesn’t feel as bad. Weather-wise, the shoulder season is best for outdoor activities.

Once June hits, the temperatures climb a bit too high to really enjoy this place. Hence, the beginning of May is the best time to visit. Spring is also not a bad time to visit but the most popular areas are busy and campsites in and even near the park are often booked to the limit.  

Avoid weekends if at all possible, get there early, and feel free to wander off the beaten path. Enjoy biking, hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and even stargazing. Don’t miss Cholla Cactus Garden either. It’s a short, enjoyable walk full of cacti and other plants.

The weather here in May is usually perfect for a visit. It’s generally not too hot yet as the temperature never breaks 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus, you can enjoy the striking scenery and everything this place has to offer without the summer heat.  

Mind you, May can still be one of the busiest times of the year even without the summer tourists. Some say the visitor numbers have actually been higher in May but let’s remember that school is still in session so just avoid weekends. Also, keep in mind that arriving early is also a good idea since the main road here, Arches Scenic Drive can get congested and like any other place, the parking lots closest to the most popular attractions and hiking trailheads will fill up first. Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

This national park offers exercise and relaxation. You can go hiking and then head for the historic bathhouses and soak in the hot spring water. May is a great time to visit too because it doesn’t get hotter than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once you’ve had your fill of hiking you can also dine and even shop in town where the park is located. This is possibly one of the more luxurious national park visits, all things considered. Even if it gets a tad humid, there’s plenty to do here both outside and inside.  

The bathhouses of Hot Springs have been a must-visit place since the 1800s. In fact, the Buckstaff Baths have been open for more than a century! Where else can you relax and soak up the history, right?

In fact, the comparatively mild spring weather of May is a great time to visit this park (and other state attractions) as it is generally not hotter than 71 degrees Fahrenheit. At night it might get cold in the canyon so do your hiking during the day.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

The best time to see North America’s tallest sand dunes is in May. If you visit earlier, there could be an afternoon storm, the winds are higher and it might still snow. In the summer, the temperature of the sand can soar to a sizzling 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

In May this park doesn’t get hotter than 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Mind you, this place is actually a great location for stargazing and hiking. It’s also home to a surprisingly diverse landscape. 

So after you go sand-sledding or sandboarding, explore the forests, grasslands, wetlands, and alpine lakes. (Note that if you’re only planning on visiting the alpine lakes, summer, though more crowded is better weather-wise.) Visit in late May and you can enjoy Medano Creek’s “surge flow” and float down the waves on flat inflatables. Canyonlands is a great nature destination to see in the month of May. It is often less busy than other national parks in Utah and in May it’s no hotter than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don’t spend too much time in the lower areas though, it may even be a little cooler.

Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

The temperature in this unique, popular park is never higher than 80 degrees Fahrenheit in May. More importantly, the winters are cold and snowy and summer not only means higher temperatures but, believe it or not, it’s monsoon season. Here you will discover ancient, colorful towering trees that are more than 200 million years old.

The lovely landscape of the rainbow-colored Painted Desert is also impressive. There are many things to do here including biking, hiking, and taking ranger-led tours. You can even drive around and enjoy an outlook or two.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

The majority of the hiking trails here are open, and you can enjoy them without the summer crowds and scorching heat.

Nevertheless, always check the park’s official website. Even if the weather is fine, sometimes trails are closed due to construction efforts or even flooding. In May the Virgin River has high water levels so it’s also a great time to check out the waterfalls.

The Redwood National and State Parks, California

Sequoia trees may be the planet’s largest, but the redwood trees are the planet’s tallest. The US Redwood National and State Parks are home to the tallest trees anywhere in the world. Arches National Park, Utah

Just outside of Moab, Arches National Park covers an area of 120 square miles. This is a great place to learn just what time, wind, and water can do to sandstone. Indeed, the featured 2,000-plus arches found here were all formed by millions of years of erosion.  

Perhaps the most popular of all these arches is the Delicate Arch which is 65 feet tall. This place is a real fantasyland of unusual rock formations. Highlights here include South Window, North Window, and the popular Park Avenue area of sandstone monoliths.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Travel to Maine’s Mount Desert Island. For it is here you will find Acadia National Park. This park preserves the natural, stark beauty of the Atlantic coastline and includes 47,000 acres.  

This park includes beaches, clear lakes, campgrounds, granite outcroppings, lush pine forests, and over 100 miles of exceptional hiking and biking trails. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Regular readers should already know this national park was arguably made world-famous thanks to the release of the 1987 U2 album, Joshua Tree. This is not only the 11th most-visited national park, but it is also the place to find over 500 interesting archeological sites and probably the best group of rock-climbing faces in the entire country. It’s definitely a real hot spot for rock climbers. Newcomers will undoubtedly note the bizarre rock formations and the odd, furry trees found here in this Dr. Seuss-like landscape just past the city of Twentynine Palms.

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park is a great place to visit all year ‘round depending on your interests. It includes the largest group of hoodoos on the planet too. Most importantly, Bryce Canyon is actually a number of natural amphitheaters.  

They are ensconced one mile up and are only referred to as a “canyon” for general publicity purposes. You can get some great views from a specific 18-mile span of scenic highway. However, veteran visitors suggest camping and hiking in the park. If you like stars, don’t miss the annual astronomy event!

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

The well-known Rocky Mountain National Park actually encompasses an impressive 415-square-mile area of the massive mountain range. It is split by the famous Continental Divide. The eastern section includes a mountainous area, and the western section features green vegetation.  

This US park includes 100 peaks that are more than 10,000 feet tall. The tallest is Longs Peak which is 14,259 feet high. The alpine mountain scenery is undoubtedly impressive. Hike the 359 hiking trails here and keep your eyes open for such wildlife as bighorn sheep, black bears, elk, moose, and more.

Glacier National Park, Montana

Northern Montana’s Glacier National Park is home to expansive green forests, shining blue lakes, and towering mountain peaks. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is co-managed with Waterton Lakes National Park because it extends up to the Canadian border. Go hike a section of the Appalachian Trail, visit the Rose River or go see the South River Falls. Indeed, if you like waterfalls, visit in the spring. Everglades National Park, Florida

Everglades National Park is situated in the Everglades in southwest Florida just 45 minutes from downtown Miami. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is Florida’s most famous park. 1. The Queen’s Garden And Navajo Loop Combination Trail

This loop trail is rated as moderately difficult due perhaps to its 600-foot elevation and length of almost three miles. Start the hike at either Sunset or Sunrise Point and hike in a clockwise direction. Head downward on the Queen’s Garden trail.  

When you reach the bottom, take a brief detour to see the hoodoo that looks like Queen Victoria in the Queen’s Garden. The trail connects with the popular Navajo Loop as you head up the canyon. The final section includes a pair of trails.  

They are Wall Street and Two Bridges. The former is the most popular. Both lead to Sunset Point via switchbacks. If you parked at Sunrise Point, take the Rim Trail to your vehicle.

The Sunset Point To Sunrise Point Hike

This easy paved walking trail is part of the larger Rim Trail. This one-mile, out-and-back walk leads along the top of Bryce Canyon and overlooks the amphitheater and the hoodoos. It also provides you with great photo opportunities for little time and comparatively little effort.  

Experts say that on a clear day, you’ll even be able to see Navajo Mountain which is 80 miles away. Indeed, from this tiny trail, you will also see portions of the previously mentioned Queen’s Garden trail as it meanders ‘long the ridges to the left, and the numerous Navajo Loop Trail switchbacks to the right.

The Fairyland Loop Hike

Want a longer hike? This one is a total of eight miles. The elevation gain is almost 2,300 feet. It’s rated “strenuous” due to the elevation and distance.  

You can begin the trek from either Fairyland or Sunrise Point but starting at the latter will add more distance. You could also take a quick detour to Tower Bridge, although it could also serve as a separate hike. The Fairyland Loop will take you along ridges and through hoodoos where you’ll enjoy awesome views and close looks at fantastic formations. The cream, gold, orange, and pink tints are quite vibrant on this trail.

The Peek-A-Boo Loop Trail

If the Navajo and Queen’s Garden Trails are too busy for you, this five-and-a-half-mile trail might work for you. There’s an elevation gain here of over 1,500 feet. Since most of it occurs rather quickly, the hike is rated strenuous.

Here you steeply descend into the striking Bryce Canyon Amphitheater, hike through huge hoodoos, and more. Be sure to see the Wall of Windows, where the arches and various cracks in the upper sections of the joining hoodoos frame the sky behind it.  

You can do this hike with the previously mentioned Queen’s Garden/Navajo Loop. It’s a trail known as the “Figure 8 Combination Trail.” It’s a double loop hike that’s almost six and a half miles long and covers more of the popular amphitheater.

The Queen’s Garden Trail

This easy hike is an out-and-back trail that’s under two miles. It seems like a loop trail though because the views in each different direction are distinctly different. Some travel writers say it is comparable in diversity and beauty 

to the well-known Queen’s Garden/Navajo Loop Combination Trail, but it’s “less than half the distance, making it perfect for [travelers who are] short on time.”  

You begin at Sunrise Point, hiking along the top of pine-dotted, limestone and mud ridges as you descend into the canyon as the hoodoos rise ‘round you. There are steep drop-offs on at least one side of the ridges, and the trail is only moderately wide. You even pass through artificial arches in a few places.

Relax on one of the benches in the shady patch of pine trees. See the famous hoodoo that looks like Queen Victoria. Return to the parking lot via the same trail.

The Navajo Trail

The well-known Navajo Trail beginning at Sunset Point will lead you through topography similar to that of the Queen’s Garden. You will find towering, multi-colored hoodoos rising up all around you. Hike through the attractive amphitheater, beneath Sunset Point. 

The main difference between the pair is that the 1.3-mile Navajo Trail hike has a greater elevation gain, 550 feet, over a series of switchbacks. It is also generally steeper. While the park rates it as a moderately difficult hike, others claim if you hike slowly, it’s easy.

The Bristlecone Pines Hike

This one-mile loop trail hike provides you the opportunity to see something you don’t normally see much of in Utah, Bristlecone pine trees. Some of these ancient trees are over 1,800 years old. See the blue spruce, Douglas and white firs, and wildlife too.

This easy hike starts at the scenic drive’s south end in Rainbow Point. While the elevation here in the park climbs to 9,100 feet, the trail has an elevation gain of under 200 feet. Snow does linger here due to cooler temperatures. So don’t plan on completing this hike in the winter or even the early spring.

The Tower Bridge Hike

For those interested in Bryce Canyon but not up for hiking the whole Fairyland Loop Trail, there’s always the out-and-back Tower Bridge Hike. It’s less than four miles, has an elevation gain of 800 feet, and is rated only moderately difficult. Here you will hike a part of the famed Fairyland Loop Trail, before detouring onto a spur trail that takes you to the distinct stone structure named the Tower Bridge.

What’s more, you can also see some of those previously mentioned Bristlecone pines as it meanders through high hoodoos and the multi-colored stone wall known as the Chinese Wall. There’s even a bit of welcoming shade not far from the popular Tower Bridge.

The Hike To Mossy Cave

Perhaps this less-than-one-mile hike is incorrectly named. While one would expect this out-and-back trek to lead to a cave, those in the know say it might be more accurately described as a damp overhanging natural shelf. At any rate, it is an easy hike with an elevation gain of 300 feet.

The true highlights here are the waterfall and the river that runs through the rugged countryside here at the base of these hoodoo-dotted hills. You’ll hike along the river much of the time, cross a bridge, then hike up to the “mossy cave.” The trail splits as it ascends.

The cave is to the left and the overlook is to the right. Mossy Cave is situated outside of the park gates, on Highway 12, on the way to the town named Tropic. It’s a nice stop on your way to popular Capitol Reef National Park.

The Hat Shop Hike

This four-mile in-and-out Bryce Canyon hike is named after the ivory rocks precariously perched atop the towering hoodoos you will see on your journey. If you have actually hiked a number of the more popular trails in this park and are simply seeking a trail that is generally uncrowded, then this is it. Keep in mind though, that this steep hiking trail is also physically challenging. 

Your descent into the canyon is a sharp one. Once you hike past the hoodoos and reach the bottom though, you will be amazed when you turn and look skyward. Look up 1,000 feet and note the hike back out that awaits you. Be sure not to miss the views of the Kaiparowits Plateau and the Paria River Valley too.

The Sheep Creek And Swamp Canyon Hike

You have hiked most of the top-rated loop hikes in Bryce Canyon National Park. You’ve gazed in awe at all those high hoodoos and now just long for some peace and quiet. If solitude appeals to you, then get ready for the Sheep Creek and Swamp Canyon hike.

This serene route takes you through a quieter place that few tourists even know exists, the Bryce Canyon backcountry. Here is something else unique to this pleasant pilgrimage: You will actually see running water. Running water is a rare sight for most of the hikes in this park.

This particular trail is moderately difficult as it has a distance of over four miles and an elevation change of 800 feet. It is also part of the well-known Under the Rim Trail. Veteran visitors say it is best to hike this trail clockwise.

They also confirm that the best time to see Bryce Canyon is generally from May to September. Sections of the area around the trail have been impacted by relatively recent wildfires, so now in the spring it fairly bursts with colorful wildflowers. This easy “hike” is only half a mile in total. The trail is semi-paved. Veteran visitors consider this a favorite in terms of short hikes because it takes you right to the impressive Double Arch. Mind you, if you want a little exercise, climb up one of these famous arches and enjoy the view. You will not be disappointed!

 Balanced Rock Hike

This stroll to rugged Balanced Rock hardly even qualifies as a hike. The total distance is an easy three-tenths of a mile, and the trail is paved. Here you walk around the entire perimeter of this striking rock formation. Enjoy this brief stroll.

The Skyline Arch Hike

The Skyline Arch Hike is an easy hike that has a total distance of just under a half mile. The trail is sandy and a little rocky. The Windows Trail 

The Windows Trail is a wonderful way for people short on time yet still hoping to see multiple arches. Much of the trail is semi-paved as well although you really should make the extra effort to get closer to the arches now that you’re here! The Sand Dune Arch Hike

This is a kid-friendly, easy, 0.4-mile, heavily trafficked hiking trail. It is uniquely located and thus a favorite of families who hike here. It takes you directly to an impressive arch tucked away in a sleek slot canyon.  

Indeed, both the arch itself and the surrounding area is coated with this incredibly smooth sand. In fact, the sand is so smooth it would make some beaches on the planet envious. The entire area is also shaded so that’s another plus. It’s a nice place to cool off and catch your breath before hiking in more challenging areas of the park.

Delicate Arch Upper Viewpoint Hike

This hike is ideal for anyone who wants to see the park’s most famous arch without actually hiking to it. This viewpoint will give you a look at it. The trail is only half a mile long, but it’s uneven, rocky, a little steep, and there is no shade.   

The experts note that for its length it is still “fairly strenuous.” Some also say that there’s not a significant difference between the view from the Upper Viewpoint and the view from the popular Delicate Arch Lower Viewpoint, which is just a 100-yard stroll on a paved path from the parking area. So, if you don’t like this uneven, rocky climb, short as it is, don’t stress it.

The Delicate Arch Hike

Hiking to Delicate Arch is not an easy feat. Some veteran visitors say completing this difficult hike on a windy day makes it even harder. It’s three miles long and has an elevation of 480 feet. There’s not a lot of shade here either.  

The hike not only includes a steep climb up a hill of loose sandstone, but also a narrow section with a high wall on one side and a drop on the other. As you approach the end of the hike, you’ll see another arch to your left. It’s called the Twisted Doughnut Arch. Climb and look through it to get a perfect view of Delicate Arch.

The Park Avenue Hike

It doesn’t include an arch, but stunning Park Avenue is still well worth the visit. The hike is between one and two miles depending on how you plan your adventure. Those in the know suggest beginning the hike at the top and hiking towards the well-known Courthouse Towers since the views as you descend are exceptional. The National Park Service suggests if you decide to hike back up to your vehicle, that you stick to the trail and avoid the actual road. On the other hand, if you arrange to be picked up at the trail’s end, it’s just one easy downhill mile.

The Broken Arch Hike

Just to clarify, the famous Broken Arch isn’t broken. It’s just cracked. It’s just an easy, 1.3-mile hike across an open field to see it too.  

You’ll also be able to enjoy great views of the lovely La Sal Mountains. You should actually climb through the arch for the very best views. You can combine this tiny trek with that of Sand Dune Arch too since they both use the same trailhead.

The Landscape Arch Hike

Impressive Landscape Arch is 306 feet in length and (in some spots) only seven feet wide. It’s one of the most popular arches in the park. This easy 1.6-mile-long hike to the arch is along a packed trail. Mind you, if you have the time there are a couple of potential side trips you can make here as well. As this is being written, this arch is behind a fence in order to preserve and protect it.

 The Pine Tree Arch Hike

If you don’t have a lot of time, you can see Pine Tree Arch on a short, solo hike or include it as a side trip when you visit Landscape Arch. Check out the desert view through its center! If you have time for another short detour, go see Tunnel Arch too. (Take the fairly easy one-mile trail to see Pine Tree Arch as a fast standalone hike, if need be.

The Navajo Arch And Partition Arch Hike

A lot of hikers combine hiking to this pair of arches with a hike around the Devils Garden, as they’re found past Landscape Arch but before the Double O Arch. Even if you are not up to hiking all the way to Double O, it’s worth the effort to go past Landscape Arch to see Navajo Arch and Partition Arch. You can see all three arches in three miles. It’s not an easy trek and there is some rock scrambling involved.

The Double O Arch Hike

Some claim that the rugged beauty of this arch is almost overshadowed by the hike itself. The trail here, especially the section between Double O Arch and Landscape Arch, is both memorable and invigorating. It features fantastic views of the La Sal Mountains and the surrounding area. The journey to and from Double O Arch is over four miles, and you will be hiking along high ledges, and doing a bit of rock scrambling too.

The Fiery Furnace Hike

This is a unique hike. You can only complete it with a permit or on a ranger-led hike. While exploring this natural maze of slot canyons and rugged rock fins is fun, this is a difficult hike.

The ranger-led hike is 2 miles long and takes approximately three hours from start to finish. Keep in mind that you’ll need to use both your hands and your feet to navigate the canyons and be okay with tight spaces in order to master this maze. Don’t be confused by its name though, as this place gets significantly more shade than most of the trails here and is thus literally one of the coolest hikes here.

The Devils Garden Trail

This trail, plus the optional section of the popular Primitive Trail, which might include a detour to Private Arch, is the Park’s longest. Several arches listed here can be found on the Devils Garden trail, including Pine Tree Arch, Navajo Arch, Landscape Arch, and Double O Arch. Indeed, if you decide to hike the entire trail, including all the optional side trips, you will see a total of seven arches.  

This complete 7.2-mile hike includes sun exposure, some ledges, and some rock scrambling too. None of these hikes specifically require any special equipment or expert technical knowledge. Still, you will need to remember to pack the essentials and follow all the hiking tips you would need on any other hike!

Epic Hikes In Paradise

1. Nisqually Vista Hike

This is an easy, paved loop trail hike with a distance of just over one mile. You will experience an ascent of 200 feet and should need no more than 45 minutes to complete this little trek. The trailhead is in the Lower Paradise parking lot.  

It is a short hike with a couple of steep-stepping moments. If you can push a baby stroller, you can handle this. From here you will enjoy memorable views of the Nisqually Glacier and Mount Rainier without making much of an effort.

The Myrtle Falls Hike 

This is an easy, one-mile hike. The ascent is 100 feet, and it should take only half an hour to complete. The trailhead for this hike is in the Upper Paradise parking lot by the popular Paradise Inn.

The path to Myrtle Falls is entirely paved and family-friendly. You start on the first section of the popular Skyline Trail. At Edith Gorge, you should take the steep, short downhill spur trail to see Myrtle Falls. 

Once you return to the Skyline Trail, take a right, walk for 100 feet and you’ll get an outstanding view of Mount Rainier too. If you want to hike the whole Skyline Trail, keep going. Otherwise, there’s not much left to see here.

The Skyline Trail To Panorama Point

This hike is 6.2 miles and is rated strenuous. Your total descent here is 1,900 feet. You will need between three to five hours to complete this hike.

The Trailhead is in the Upper Paradise parking lot. Despite the level of difficulty, those in the know rate this trek as “one of the best hikes in Mount Rainier.” Your journey begins in Paradise.  

From there you hike past the previously mentioned Myrtle Falls, through verdant pine forests, and then head up the rugged slopes of majestic Mount Rainier. On a clear day, you will not only have great views of the park but also be able to as far away as Oregon’s Mount Hood. Finally, it’s a steep hike down to the Paradise Visitor Center.

Hike To Camp Muir 

This is a very strenuous hike. It is eight miles in total and has an ascent of 4,800feet. You will need between eight and 10 hours to finish.

The Trailhead is in the Upper Paradise parking lot. Without a climbing permit, Camp Muir is as close as you will get to Mount Rainier’s summit. Take the handy Skyline Trail to the Pebble Creek Trail. From here, you must hike upward through snow. When you reach Camp Muir, you’ll be at a surprising elevation of 10,188 feet.

The Bench And Snow Lake Trails 

The total distance of this moderately difficult trail is just under three miles. The ascent is just 750 feet. Give yourself between one and a half to two and a half hours.

The Trailhead is situated on Stevens Canyon Road, just five miles from the Paradise visitor center. This one hike will provide you with access to a pair of subalpine lakes. Take the spur trail you will see before mile one, and you can visit Bench Lake. The trail takes you through a verdant forest and a tunnel carved through the dense brush. Once you return to the main trail, you continue for half a mile upward until you reach Snow Lake.

Epic Hikes In The Sunrise Area 

Sunrise, located north of Mount Rainier, is like Paradise. It offers noteworthy views of rugged Mount Rainier and several different hikes too.  

Sourdough Ridge Trail To Frozen Lake

This is a moderately difficult hike with a 500-foot ascent and a total distance of three miles. You should be able to complete it in between one and a half to two hours. You will find the trailhead in the Sunrise parking lot.

The Sourdough Ridge Trail provides hikers with amazing views of the entire park. From the parking lot, you take the lovely Sunrise Nature Trail. The Sourdough Ridge Trail will soon be on the left.  

This hiking trail takes you to popular Frozen Lake. Mount Rainier is almost always entirely in front of you. You can stop at the ridge and enjoy the view or keep going until you reach the lake.

The Burroughs Mountain Loop

This is a strenuous hike with a distance of between six and nine miles and an ascent of as much as 2,500 feet. You will need between three and six hours. The trailhead is in the Sunrise parking lot.

Your journey begins with a one-and-a-half-mile hike on the well-known Sourdough Ridge Trail to the famous Frozen Lake. When you reach the junction, keep hiking towards Burrough Mountains. Cross the snowfield, then hike up the mountains.  Hiking to the second Burrough Mountain will make your total distance six miles. Hiking to the third one increases it to nine miles.

The Mount Fremont Lookout Trail 

This six-mile, moderately difficult hike has a total ascent of 1,200 feet and includes taking the popular Sourdough Ridge Trail to Frozen Lake. From the trailhead in the Sunrise parking lot, it should take you between two and a half to five hours to complete. Once you pass Frozen Lake, the crowds should dwindle.  

The hike to the old Mount Fremont Fire Lookout is a gradual uphill trek. Here you will take in exceptional views of Mount Rainier and be able to see across the park too. Interestingly, there’s also an open-air pit toilet that offers hikers another unique experience.

The Summerland Trail To Panhandle Gap

This hike is a strenuous one. Its total distance is 2 miles, and the total descent is 3,150 feet. You will need between five to seven hours here.

You’ll find the trailhead on Sunrise Park Road, not far from the Mather Memorial Parkway and 11+ miles from the helpful Sunrise Visitor Center. While this hike is challenging, it is far from boring as it includes deep, old-growth forests, colorful wildflowers, the chance to see some local wildlife, and great views of not only Mount Rainier, but also views of massive Mount Adams as well. Following a gradual uphill trek through the forests and wildflowers, and a steep hike up some switchbacks, you enter Summerland. Here marmots scurry close to the trail.  

Heading back at this point makes your roundtrip hike only nine miles. Should you choose to continue, you hike through a subalpine region and eventually will find snow underfoot. Hike past a frozen lake and see Mount Rainier’s peak looming to your right. One final climb and you are rewarded with a panoramic view.

The Naches Peak Loop 

Sources differ on the difficulty of this hike. It is just over three and a half miles in distance with an ascent of 680 feet. Some experts say it is easy and some say it is moderately difficult. Plan on spending between one and a half to two and a half hours here.  

You have parking options. However, veteran visitors suggest using one of a pair of parking areas on Highway 410 next to Tipsoo Lake, where the trail crosses the road. Arrive early and park in one of the spots at the southern trailhead.  

From this parking area, it is recommended that you hike the loop counter-clockwise. Hiking in this direction you will first be hiking through the forest on a section of the popular Pacific Crest Trail. You will have great views of Mount Rainier behind you, hike past a little lake, cross the highway via a distinct wooden pedestrian bridge, and then head down to Tipsoo Lake.

Epic Hikes In Ohanapecosh And More

The Grove Of The Patriarchs Hike

This is an easy hike that some say is a “must do” for anyone who has never been to this park. The hike is only one and a half miles in length with no significant ascent. You should be able to hike it in an hour.  

Arrive early and park in the lot on Stevens Canyon Road next to the entrance. This brief hike will take you past some of the park’s oldest and largest Douglas firs, western hemlocks, and western red cedars. You’ll also cross a suspension bridge, and along a group of boardwalks and dirt trails too.  

(As this goes to press though, the trail is closed due to significant damage to the bridge from recent flooding. It may not be open in the summer of 2022 or 2023.)

The Silver Falls Loop 

This is a trail that’s perfect for anyone and everyone. It is less than three and a half miles in length, with an elevation gain of only 670 feet, and, depending on your family or group, should only take between one and a half to three hours. There are multiple trailheads available.

Those in the know though say you really should park your vehicle at the Ohanapecosh Visitor Center. This short trail takes you through an exceptional old-growth forest. Of course, the real highlight is seeing Silver Falls. You will be afforded an assortment of excellent views of the striking waterfall and many moss-covered rocks via various bridges and overlooks. Some travel writers refer to this as “one of the best hikes” in the park, especially if you visit on a rainy or cloudy day.

Spray Park Hike

The Spray Park Hike is strenuous. The total distance is eight miles and the total ascent is 1,800 feet. Plan on it taking between four and six hours.

It is praised as being one of the best hikes to take if you are an aficionado of wildflowers. The trailhead is at the very end of Mountain Meadows Road. Your journey begins in the verdant forest.

You can take the spur trail to Spray Falls. It is challenging but once you reach the top, you are walking through fields of pretty wildflowers. Mind you, you also will be able to enjoy some incredible views of Echo Rock, Observation Rock, and (of course) majestic Mount Rainier as well.

Tolmie Peak Fire Lookout Hike

Some say this hike is moderately difficult and some say it’s strenuous. Either way, you will hike for close to six miles on a trail that has an ascent of 1,600 feet. If you want dramatic views of rugged Mount Rainier and not a lot of crowds, this hike fits the bill.

Set aside between two and a half to four hours to finish it. The hike begins on Mountain Meadows Road. While it might be somewhat challenging to some it is also considered to be a fun hike and is often referred to as a “favorite.” On the way to the popular peak lookout, you will wander through thick forests and a number of alpine lakes as well. Tolmie Peak Lookout reportedly offers you “a spectacular view” of the park’s namesake too.

 The Wonderland Trail 

This 93-mile hiking trail is not only strenuous, but it also has an ascent of more than 23,000 feet. You will not only need stamina for this backpacking adventure, but you will also need time. It could take between nine and 13 days to complete the hike and circumnavigate Mount Rainier.

This journey will lead you through stunning canyons, and temperate forests. You’ll cross streams and even rivers and see Mount Rainier from every angle. A permit is required, and they are generally in demand so plan ahead. The hiking season here usually starts at the end of June or early July. It ends in October.

Theodore Roosevelt And Badlands National Parks

Glacier National Park

Veteran visitors say the 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road, first open to visitors in the summer of 1933, is arguably the “greatest stretch of asphalt” in the USA.  Mainly because it runs through the much-underrated Glacier National Park in Montana along the border of Alberta and British Columbia in Canada.  If you don’t like snow, the best time to visit is in the summer.

You can see forests, mountains, waterfalls, wildflowers, and (naturally) glaciers too.  You may even spot bears and mountain goats.  Hikers have their choice of several scenic hiking trails.  Enjoy the engineering marvel known as The Loop where this famous road rises right along the mountain’s edge and makes hairpin turns.  It was the first US road to be listed as both a National Civil Engineering Landmark and a National Historic Landmark.”

Death Valley National Park

While this is another park you can visit any time, taking a road trip here in the summer is reportedly more memorable because you can stop and check out the three numbers on the super-sized Furnace Creek thermometer.  Mind you, the otherworldly dry heat at this park that straddling the California-Nevada border can be risky for the faint at heart as it has been as high as 128 degrees Fahrenheit there recently.

They have almost matched what experts note is the official “hottest temperature ever recorded” on the entire planet.  Local highlights include Badwater Basin.  It’s the official “lowest point” on the entire continent.  See the singing sand dunes and the popular mysterious moving rocks there too.

Olympic National Park

Washington State’s The Puget Sound separates this particular park from the city of Seattle.  This place has a surprising history of myths, legends, and torrid tales.  Indeed, if you’re a fan of Twilight you won’t want to miss a stop in Forks.

The best time to take a road trip here is roughly between the months of May and August.  In fact, Pacific Northwesterners prefer this time of the year but tend not to advertise it.  All the trails and roads are open then too.

Into geography?  You can enjoy the official “westernmost point of the continental U.S.” on this wet and wild road trip.  Outdoor athletes can hike Hurricane Ridge.  Just remember to head out early.  The trail itself is easily accessible and provides a memorable view of the awesome Olympic Range too.

Acadia National Park

Sure, everyone knows New England is one place to go to see fantastic fall foliage.  Ah, but regular readers also know that there is another great place to visit in the spring and summer–Acadia National Park nestled along the coast of Maine.  Yes, if you like towering pine trees, cooking pots filled with freshly prepared lobster, and lonely lighthouses located on rugged, rocky shores, this is the place for you.  Spend three days there and you can also check out Bar Harbor’s other attractions including Thunder Hole,  and the oldest bookstore in Maine.

You can also go camping and sample some popular popovers at the Jordan Pond House.  If you can spare the time, cruise over to New Hampshire and hit the cool Kancamagus Highway as well.

Indiana Dunes National Park

You begin this road trip in Chicago, Illinois.  In less than half an hour, you will find yourself in this comparatively new national park.  Mind you, you won’t be driving around the park’s sand dunes in your car, but you can get a super view of them and even stop and explore them more closely if you wish.

According to Indiana’s official tourism website though the signature sand dunes are only part of what you will find around here.  There are unique plants and animals, brewery and winery trails, a fun waterpark, and even casinos.  What’s more, this particular national park road trip can also be a relatively easy and fun “beach getaway.”

Yellowstone National Park

As previously noted, travel writers generally agree that well-known Going-to-the-Sun is pretty much the best road in a US national park, a day or more of road-tripping through world-famous Yellowstone National Park is not like anything else on this list.  This huge park covers areas of three states– Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.  Officially, it is the first national park in the USA and possibly even the world.

Here you might see such resident animals as bears, bison, coyote, and elk.  Don’t forget out the geysers here either.  If you are concerned about crowds, avoid visiting in July.  Although veteran visitors agree that the place is so large that once you hit the major attractions such as the famous geyser Old Faithful, there is plenty of room ro find a natural niche of your own both in and out of your vehicle.  Roughly 80 percent of the tourists don’t go more than 15 minutes away from their car.  So explore a little and enjoy the relative privacy.

Yosemite National Park

Despite recent concerns in some of the big cities, California remains an incredible place to take a road trip.  Enter this gorgeous national park from the east after you first check out the gateway to the park, magnificent Mono Lake.  Your next stop is Yosemite Valley where you can experience this popular park just as famous photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams once did with Half Dome and El Capitan looming large in the background.

If you follow this plan, it gives you more flexibility to check out not only Mono Lake but striking Tuolumne Meadows and even Tioga Pass, providing you travel there in summer when all the snow has been cleared.  Don’t forget to save time to see the waterfalls as well.

Everglades National Park

This park is the third largest national park in “the lower 48.”  It is surpassed in size only by Death Valley and Yellowstone.  Regular readers know that much like many other national parks on our road trip list, for a number of different reasons, it is also a popular one.  Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this reportedly fragile ecosystem is also an official International Biosphere Reserve.

Perhaps more importantly, it is also home to such wildlife as birds, manatees, panthers, and American crocodiles.  Unlike the previously mentioned parks, this is a huge, watery place so you will only see a limited portion of it unless you stop and occasionally exit your vehicle.  Take an airboat ride or go kayaking to see more of this park.  Unless you enjoy hot and sticky weather, do not visit in the height of summer.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

This park in Tennessee always makes the list of “most visited national park” and often tops it.  The best time to visit if you like lots of color to your lovely landscapes, is during the fall.  The Blue Ridge Parkway site suggests a park road trip that involves not only this park but also Gatlinburg, and Pigeon Forge.

Many travelers to this area visit both the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains Parkway.  The area comes complete with natural beauty, rich culture, and a lot of things to do.  This area of both Tennessee and North Carolina are also said to be quite beautiful in the fall.  Be sure to cruise the lovely Tail of the Dragon too if you have the time.

Joshua Tree National Park

Undoubtedly made famous in part by the 1987 U2 album of the same name, this national park might appear to be nothing but trees and rocks.  (Your rovin’ writer has hiked there and understands that misconception!)  Still take the road trip and really explore the place.  You will find that this park, less than two-and-a-half hours out of Los Angeles, is more than its namesake trees and rugged boulders.

The best time to visit this popular park is early in the day during March or April when you will also see a lot of desert wildflowers.  The 11th most-visited park, it also features at least 500 archeological sites and some of the best places in the country to go rock-climbing.  Go four-wheeling on Geology Tour Road if you have the right kind of vehicle.  Other places to add to your list for this road trip include Pioneertown, the Integraton, and have a meal at the popular Natural Sisters Cafe as well.  Don’t forget to check out Keys View either!

Best Time To Go

Your best bet is to schedule your trip during the spring or fall. During the summer the temperatures hit the hundreds and a lot of places become crowded. Winter is also not the best time for your trip because the temperatures can be too low, and snowfall can cause closures.

Day 1. Las Vegas To The Grand Canyon

Your trip begins in “Sin City” Las Vegas, 279 miles from the Grand Canyon. Check out the various attractions here in the morning, if you haven’t already checked them out on Day 0. Be sure to peruse the other articles on this website for more information on what to do and see in Las Vegas, Nevada.)

Prep for a drive of 4.5 hours. Stop to stretch your legs at the Memorial Bridge to see Hoover Dam. Check out Lake Mead from the overlook too.  

This schedule focuses on the South Rim which is more family-friendly, with more moderate hiking trails, more amenities, and more to do. You can spend the night in Tusayan, just six miles from the popular South Rim. Should you crave solitude and more challenging hiking trails, simply adjust your schedule a bit and drive to the North Rim.  

Only 10 percent of the canyon’s visitors come here. You can stay at the Yavapai Lodge or the Bright Angel Lodge. Both of these places are on site.

Day 2. The Grand Canyon

Your second day is reserved for exploring the great Grand Canyon. Regular readers already know a lot about this natural wonder. Nevertheless, highlights here include biking, hiking, and horseback riding.  

Not feeling athletic? You can learn about this gorgeous gorge at the educational Yavapai Geology Museum located at the South Rim. You can even sign up for a helicopter tour! If, on the other hand, you want a challenge, add a couple of days to your itinerary and hike the canyon rim-to-rim like your rovin’ writer once did!

Day 3. Drive From Grand Canyon To Monument Valley

On this day you’ll be driving approximately 175 miles from the Grand Canyon to magnificent Monument Valley, Utah. Day Three involves a little time making only minimal detours to see a few things and stretch your legs as well. Visit Tsegi Canyon and catch a glimpse at the ancient settlements carved into the rock face thousands of years ago by the Anasazi people.  

Another point of interest is the memorable rock formation Artenesales de Piedra, a.k.a. Church Rock. Travel a few more miles and see the rugged red rock landscape known as Baby Rocks. It’s reminiscent of Bryce Canyon’s terrain.

You can make Page your base of operations since it’s not far from Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Horseshoe Bend. If you make good time, stop by Mexican Hat. The town was named this because it’s shaped like a Mexican sombrero. Of course, the main “must-see” site is the Navajo National Monument.

Day 4. See Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

The enthralling Monument Valley is one of the world’s most photographed places. Indeed, it’s practically an icon of any true American Southwest road trip. This park spans an area that crosses the border between Utah and Arizona.

The fragile sandstone towers here are as tall as 1,000 feet. They are surrounded by miles of mesas, desert sand, hardy shrubs, and stark buttes, all backdropped by beautiful blue skies. The most famous landmarks here are Merrick Butte and Mitten Buttes.

The area is thought to be sacred. Thus, you will have to book a tour with a Navajo guide. Movie mavens might recognize this spot from such feature films as Back to the Future III, Easy Rider, Mission Impossible 2, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Stagecoach, The Lone Ranger, and Forrest Gump. You can even visit famous Forrest Gump Point!

Day 5. See Antelope Canyon And Horseshoe Bend  

Horseshoe Bend is just 123 miles from Monument Valley. This is a great place to take a break. If you don’t like hiking, you can go kayaking on lovely Lake Powell. You will find alluring Antelope Canyon about 10 minutes away.

It is a stunning slot canyon that is highlighted by the wave-like effect the sunlight has on the canyon’s narrow sandstone walls. You can access it from either Upper Antelope Canyon or Lower Antelope Canyon. The former is more popular with those who prefer less challenging hikes.

Hiking the narrower Lower Antelope Canyon is actually fun even though the above-mentioned sunlight effect is not as impressive here. Keep in mind that you can only hike here with a guide. Additionally, you will want to get a permit well in advance to access Antelope Canyon as well.

If you have some time before you check out of your room in Page, visit the friendly Carl Hayden Visitor Center. You can learn a bit about the engineering and history of the local Glen Canyon Dam through several interpretive exhibits. Book a jeep tour and go stargazing as well.

Day 6. Get A Gander Of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

This place is less than 28 miles from the city of Page. It is perfect for backcountry adventures! Here you can stop and enjoy ancient arches, prehistoric sites, multicolored cliffs, natural bridges, several slot canyons, and even a couple of long-abandoned movie sets.

While it is famous for its namesake Grand Staircase, there are several other noteworthy landmarks to see including Cottonwood Canyon, Grosvenor Arch, and Kodachrome Basin State Park. Furthermore, this area was once the home of the Fremont and Anasazi and Fremont, so you will also see a plethora of petroglyphs as you wander around here. Finally, this remote spot features five separate ecosystems that range from verdant pine forests to low-lying deserts.

Day 7. Explore Beautiful Bryce Canyon National Park

Bryce Canyon National Park is under 20 miles from the great Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. This national park might be small when compared to others but there are quite a lot of things to see and do here nonetheless. Perhaps the main attraction here is the bright red hoodoos that make the park’s landscape unique.

Veteran visitors say the best way to really see the hoodoos is by strapping on your boots and hiking the popular Queen’s Garden to the well-known Navajo Loop trail, a trail that winds through lush pine forests, unusual, rugged rock tunnels, and, of course, the striking scarlet hoodoos. Thor’s Hammer is reported to be the tallest one at a height of 150 feet. Other well-known hoodoos here are Camel’s Head, Toadstool, and Three Kings.

If you like to hike you may also wish to do the popular Bryce Canyon Fairyland Loop. It’s a relatively easy day hike that goes through the famous Fairyland amphitheater found north of the canyon. It will give you another opportunity to see the striking, rocky landscape that looks almost unearthly.

Not into hiking? Cruise Bryce Canyon’s stunning scenic road from the comfort of your very own car. It goes right through the pretty park and leads to some of the very best viewpoints including Inspiration Point, Natural Bridge, and Sunset Point. 

Don’t forget Capitol Reef National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Arches National Park either. Mind you, if you plan on adding these places to your itinerary, you will need more than 10 days. (You can read about these particular parks elsewhere on this website.)

Day 8 And Day 9. Visit Zion National Park

The distance from Bryce Canyon to Zion National Park is 72.3 miles. Zion National Park is also a comparatively small national park, and yet there’s much to see and do here as well. What makes this park a bit different from the other parks previously mentioned on this Southwest trip itinerary.  

Zion is said to have a “more lively” feel regarding its hanging gardens, hidden grottos, lovely landscapes, lush meadows, soaring striking cliffs, and a wide variety of wildlife. Upon arrival, be sure to visit the educational Zion Human History Museum. It is here that you can learn about the history of this park and even the region’s former residents once known as the Pauite.  

It will give you a much better mental picture of the land upon which you are standing. Once you have learned a bit about this park’s past, check your boot laces and hit the hiking trails, and become a small part of the park’s present as you explore the place further afield. Surprisingly, you can complete several of the trails here in a few hours because the hikes here are relatively short, fairly easy, and quite breathtaking.  

Many travel journalists agree, that your must-hike list here should include the Watchman, Riverside Walk, the Emerald Pool Trail, and, of course, the Canyon Overlook Trail. Need more of a challenge? Hike the Angels Landing trail.  

Here you will be hiking over sandstone ledges and across rushing streams. Remember though, unlike many of the other previously discussed hiking trails, this one is said to be a “very strenuous” one, so you had best be prepared for this challenge. More importantly, if you have a fear of heights, you had best reconsider attempting this hike.  

If you’re not an athletic hiker, you can always explore this national park by driving along the popular 54-mile Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. This attractive route runs along such famous landmarks as Angel’s Landing, Twin Brothers Mountain, the Court of the Patriarchs, the Virgin River, and Kolob Viewpoint. Indeed, if you hit the latter on a good, clear day, you might even be able to spot the Grand Canyon’s North Rim.

If you can afford some extra time and enjoy canyoneering and overnight backpacking, get permits at the Backcountry Desk and have some fun. Feeling like a cowboy in this Southwest setting? Saddle up to explore the territory on horseback, and find a charming, solitary spot from which to watch the sunset.

Day 10. Drive Back To Las Vegas Then Go Home

Now that your American Southwest road trip is over, it is time for you to go home. Prep for a three-hour drive as it is 166 miles between Zion National Park and Las Vegas. Of course, if you’re taking a late flight out of Vegas, you might be able to see a couple of other attractions before you have to clear the TSA check and board your plane.  

Consider making a few last-minute stops at Kolob Canyon, the Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, or the Valley of Fire State Park.

Kanarra Falls is unsurprisingly located close to Kanarraville. Although this is a relatively short hike in terms of distance, it is a water hike and thus can present a challenge to anyone unable to hike with caution. It is famous for a pair of small waterfalls and aluminum ladders that one must climb to complete the hike.

If you are visiting Zion National Park, keep in mind that Kanarraville is close to the park so this would make a great day trip. A permit is required here. Remember, you will get wet!

Peek-a-Boo Gulch, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

This slot canyon is located in the Escalante area, best known for a pair of little arches at the entrance. Here the canyon can get very narrow but that just makes it more fun. There’s even a 10-foot scramble in order to enter. Here you will also often come across unavoidable water pools, so dress knowing that you will get wet. The best time to hike here is early in the morning when it is cooler. You’ll avoid any potential crowds as well.

Leprechaun Canyon, Glen  Canyon National Recreation Area

You will find lovely Leprechaun Canyon off the beaten path, north of the gorgeous Glen Canyon. It is a notably deep canyon and if you hike it you will discover a notably beautiful endpoint. In fact, if you choose the family-friendly option, you will not encounter any dangerous sections. Additionally, it only takes a short hike to reach it. It’s close to the Colorado River crossing at the remote Ranger District of Hite, which is exceptionally scenic.

Spooky Gulch, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

While you’re in the Peek-a-Boo Gulch area, why not check out its neighbor Spooky Gulch. This is actually one of the narrowest slot canyons on this list. It also includes some lengthy portions where you have to hike sideways in order to squeeze through. Indeed, this can sometimes create “traffic jams” during busy periods. Again, the best time to start this hike is early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

The Subway, Zion National Park

Without ropes, you can only see a small portion of the Subway. What you can hike, however, is incredible. The hike to the Subway is a bit long but reportedly fun and enjoyable. Here you will see a number of slanted waterfalls and an even larger one at the canyon’s end. You will need permits in order to hike here. They are available at the park’s visitor center or even online.

Little Wild Horse Canyon, San Rafael Swell

Little Wild Horse Canyon is said by some travel journalists to be quite an impressive slot canyon situated in the popular San Rafael Swell region. This slot canyon is narrow and long which makes for a noteworthy hiking experience. Take a loop hike via Bell Canyon or hike out and back. Take some time to visit nearby Goblin Valley State Park.

The Zebra Slot Canyon, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

The Zebra Slot Canyon is a local favorite of a number of travel writers and experienced hikers. It’s marked by zebra-like stripes within the sandstone. This 300-foot-long slot canyon generally has water in it and can be as narrow as 10 inches too.

In fact, some hikers have turned back because they actually get claustrophobic. The canyon’s tapered floor can make it difficult for some hikers to easily navigate. Be prepared to get wet.  

Dress accordingly. Start your hike at Hole in the Rock Road then slowly descend into Harris Wash. It is there that you will eventually come to the mouth of the canyon.

Little Death Hollow, The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

At first, Little Death Hollow, in the Escalante area, is deep and wide. However, as you progress in your hike, it slowly converges into a slot where you must hike single-file for miles. Additionally, you will find fewer people here than at Peek-a-Boo or Zebra. The rich sandstone here comes complete with exceptional color and textures too.

Paria Canyon, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Paria Canyon is located on the border of Arizona and Utah. Thus, you might also consider it an Arizona slot canyon too. The canyon features many miles worth of towering walls. 

It is also the second-largest slot canyon on this list. Again, prepare to get wet as the mighty Paria River runs wall-to-wall in many areas. You will be doing some river hiking. Get a permit and go backpacking along the Paria all the way out to the rushing Colorado River at majestic Marble Canyon.

The Joint Trail, Canyonlands National Park

The Joint Trail is unique. It is unlike the other slot canyons of Utah. Most slot canyons are the result of water erosion. This one, however, was created by huge layers of sandstone that actually cracked beneath their own weight. This, in turn, left a great grid of multiple slot canyons with caverns and perpendicular intersections. You will need a full day of hiking within the Needles District of Canyonlands in order to reach your destination.

Buckskin Gulch, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Beautiful Buckskin Gulch is one of the world’s longest continuous canyons and has a total of 13 miles of narrows. It actually leads into the previously mentioned Paria Canyon. You can think of the bottom entry line spot as a detour from Paria Canyon’s “Whitehouse” Trailhead. If you would rather not hike too far, you can see the upper entry point of Buckskin Gulch at the “Wire Pass” Trailhead. Get a permit and go backpacking through both Buckskin Gulch and Paria Canyon in one trip.

The Narrows, Zion National Park

Regular readers may already recognize The Narrows. As previously mentioned elsewhere on this website, visitors to Zion National Park will find a number of different hiking trails here that vary in levels of difficulty. The Narrows, however, is hands down the most popular hike to do here in the park.  

The Narrows is the biggest canyon on this list. The walls are more than 1,000 feet high and only 20 feet wide in some places. If you want to see the deepest and narrowest parts of the canyon, do a day hike up the Virgin River.  

Do you enjoy camping? Speak to the Park Service personnel and get an overnight permit. Then hike The Narrows top-down.    

The best time to hike any popular canyon is as early in the morning as possible in order to avoid any potential crowds. You can even try this hike in the fall or winter but then be sure to check on the weather and water temperature. Mind you, if you forget your waterproof gear, you can rent some here in the park. How’s that for convenience?

1. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

The 25 active glaciers here make this park one of the best places for waterfalls. As the glaciers melt, they feed over 150 waterfalls and cascades. Many are over 300 feet high.

You can actually see a number of them from specific viewpoints at the side of the road. To see others, you’ll have to do some hiking. Myrtle Falls is an example of the latter. Narada Falls is a good example of the former. Like many waterfalls, the best time to visit them is from spring to early fall. Other noteworthy falls found here include Christine Falls, Comet Falls, and Silver Falls.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina, And Tennessee

This park is home to over 100 waterfalls and cascades. The park is fairly riddled with over 2,000 miles of rivers and streams thanks to abundant rainfall and a reportedly “ideal elevation gradient.” While there are literally dozens of lesser cascades, the most popular are reported to be Abrams, Grotto, Laurel, and Rainbow Falls. The best time to see the falls is spring through early summer. You can camp here or even take a day trip out of nearby Asheville.

Yosemite National Park, California

Situated east of San Francisco, Yosemite is home to a plethora of pretty waterfalls. Yosemite Falls, which drops 2,425 feet, is one of the world’s highest waterfalls. The best time to visit is usually May through June when most of the snow melts. If you visit in late spring, you can see the Yosemite Falls moonbow. (For those not in the know, a moonbow is a lunar rainbow that is actually created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.) Other iconic falls here include Bridalveil Fall, Horsetail Fall, Nevada Fall, and Vernal Fall.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Most people probably don’t think about waterfalls when they think of the Grand Canyon, and yet Havasu Falls is truly an oasis within this arid, unforgiving landscape. It’s arguably one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the planet and is found in the Havasupai Indian Reservation, west of the Grand Canyon Village’s main tourist area on the South Rim. The Havasupai Tribe runs the reservation and getting to the falls requires some planning.  

Permits sell out quickly and you can make reservations starting in February. Day hiking is not permitted so plan on camping overnight. The best time to visit is in the spring.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Lovely Lower Doyles River Falls is perhaps the most beautiful waterfall in this park. Mind you, there are several stunning waterfalls here. The most easily accessible and popular of them all is Dark Hollow Falls.

If you’re up for an invigorating day hike past several waterfalls, head for Whiteoak Canyon. The trailheads are all found on surprisingly scenic Skyline Drive. The best time to see the falls here is spring through early summer. Be sure to see Rose River Falls, South River Falls, and (of course) Whiteoak Canyon Falls.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio

Nestled deep in the woods of this underrated national park, is beautiful Blue Hen Falls. You have to hike a short trail in but it’s nothing strenuous. Aside from the scenic waterfalls here, these protected lands also include noteworthy natural scenery, and wildlife too.

If you prefer, you can rent a bicycle here or even climb aboard the popular Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to explore the park. The best time to visit is in the spring and fall. Be sure to see Brandywine Falls too!

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Idaho, And Montana

There is a trio of memorable waterfalls here in Yellowstone. Upper Yellowstone Falls (pictured) is but one of them. This vast national park is one of the best to visit in the spring. It is famous for more than waterfalls.  

There are wonderful hot springs and geysers, and wildlife such as American bison, grizzly bears, and wolves. Indeed, in comparison, the waterfalls are almost a well-kept secret. There are over 40 named waterfalls here and several more that are still unnamed.

Perhaps the most popular falls here are the Lower Falls in the well-known Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Check out the Kepler Cascades, the Undine Falls, and the Wraith Falls as well.

Glacier National Park, Montana

Despite climate change, there are still approximately 37 glaciers here in Glacier National Park. While the glacial melt continues to feed lakes and streams here, the window to see waterfalls here is relatively narrow. So it’s important to remember that summer is the best time to chase waterfalls.    

Take a road trip and pencil in some time to cruise the great Going-to-the-Sun Road. It is said by some sources to be “one of the best roads” in the US national parks. More importantly, it is here on this drive that you will come across a number of different hiking trails that specifically lead to some wonderful waterfalls. Veteran visitors suggest seeing the McDonald Falls, the St. Mary Falls, and the Virginia Falls as well.

Olympic National Park, Washington

This park has everything needed for waterfall hunting including epic coastlines, massive mountain ranges, and primeval forests. There’s also plenty of water and a lot of places where it can go rushing down. The Sol Duc Falls is reported to be one of the park’s top attractions. Other waterfalls worth checking out include Donahue Creek, Madison, Marymere, and Royal Basin. Be sure you visit sometime in the spring or early fall.

1. Golden Canyon, Gower Gulch, and Badlands Loop, California And Nevada

One favorite desert hike in Death Valley National Park is this loop hike through the golden badlands. The circuit is a total of eight miles. It is a strenuous hike and thus requires between four and five hours to complete.  

Start your hike in the Badwater Road parking lot. This allows you to save the downhill portion for your return. This hike will take you through the shadeless, hot desert landscape to Zabriskie Point and Red Cathedral. As is the case with any hike, remember to take water and sunscreen, and start your hike as early as possible.

Devils Garden Primitive Trail Loop, Arches National Park, Utah

The Primitive Trail at Devils Garden is the best day hike in the entire park. This is a strenuous hike. Begin your trek at the Devils Garden Parking Area and the end of the Park Road just beyond the famous Landscape Arch.

If you plan on hiking everything including the spur trails, you’ll hike a total of nine miles. Give yourself four to five hours. This trail is, indeed, primitive with steep slopes, drop-offs, and few markers. You’ll see seven rock arches including Double O Arch, the famous Landscape Arch, Partition Arch, and even the Dark Angel rock formation.

Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

The well-known Bright Angel Trail allows you to truly experience the Grand Canyon. It’s strenuous, includes countless switchbacks, and covers a total of 12 miles out and back. In the summer, this place can get extremely hot and dry.  

You’ll need between six to eight hours. The trailhead is just west of the Bright Angel Lodge near the mule corral. Your descent is initially steep and continues to the Colorado River. Kaʻū Desert Trail to Maunaiki, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

This lava desert hike on the Big Island is considered to be only of moderate difficulty. The hike begins roughly 15 minutes out of Volcano Village in the parking area on Highway 11’s south side. The total distance of this hike, out and back, is 3.6 miles. Plan on hiking for two hours.

Highlights here include the Footprints Shelter where you’ll see preserved footprints of Hawaiians who were taken by surprise by a sudden volcanic eruption in 1790. There’s also the Maunaiki lava field where nothing grows on the southwest slope of the planet’s most active volcano, Kīlauea.

Lost Palms Oasis Trail, Joshua Tree National Park, California

Although it’s strenuous, it is a favorite of several travel writers. It’s also one of the park’s longest day hikes with a distance of 7.5 miles roundtrip. You begin your hike at Cottonwood Spring not far from the Cottonwood Campground.  

The hike will take between 3 and four hours. You’ll travel over rock-strewn hills and sand-bottomed washes of the arid Colorado Desert. Your destination is the Lost Palms Oasis. Since there isn’t any shade anywhere else, this large group of fan palms will be especially welcome.

King Canyon Trail To Wasson Peak, Saguaro National Park, Arizona

This is a strenuous, 7-mile round trip to Wasson Peak, a massive mountain summit with a height of 4,687 feet. It’s the highest of all the Tucson Mountains. Give yourself three to four hours and start your hike from the parking area across from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

This trail overlaps the popular King Canyon-Gould Mine Loop, which is another exceptional day hike. If you take the Gould Mine Trail back on your descent you could do both hikes together.

Sliding Sands Trail, Haleakalā National Park, Hawaii

This trail is known to the locals on Maui island as the Keonehe‘ehe‘e Trail. You begin your descent into the Haleakalā Crater at the Haleakalā Visitor Center parking lot. The total distance covered on this strenuous volcanic desert hike, out and back, is almost 11.5 miles and will take between six and seven hours. Your destination on this trip is a place near the Halali‘i cinder cone known to the locals as Pele’s Paint Pot. It’s well-known for its exceptional bright colors.

Chimney Rock Loop, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

This hike begins on the north side of scenic Utah State Route 24 in the western section of this underrated park. The distance of this moderate to strenuous hike is 3.6 miles in total. Give yourself two hours to hike up to and around the scarlet-rock plateau behind prominent Chimney Rock. The panoramic views here, especially of Waterpocket Fold, a 100-mile-long “geological wrinkle”, are incredible. It’s also a great place to see the sunset.

Painted Desert Wilderness Hike, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

The Painted Desert is officially a part of the Petrified Forest National Wilderness Area. This moderately difficult backcountry hike begins at the historic Painted Desert Inn. There’s not exactly a clear official trail here but give yourself at least an hour to complete an out-and-back hike of at least two miles through the largely pristine wilderness of a petrified forest. You can camp here with a free permit.

10. High Dune On First Ridge, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

This 30-square-mile dune field is another place without any official hiking trails. Start your hike from the main parking lot and head for High Dune on First Ridge. The total distance out and back is under three miles. Still, give yourself three to four hours for this strenuous hike. After all, zig-zag hiking on soft sand is generally more difficult than on more solid terrain. Still, the view from the top is worth the effort.

Photographers Renee and Matthew Hahnel were determined to see every US national park. Their book, Roaming America, discusses their seven-month 2017 trip.  Read on, to learn which parks they considered to be the best.

“Beginnings”

The Hahnels spent seven months visiting all 59 national parks. They began their quest for the best parks at the famous Grand Canyon and concluded it in American Samoa. They covered most of the ground in their 1988 Westfalia Vanagon. Their trek included more than 25,000 miles across 39 states, two US territories, 26 plane flights, and a number of different hiking trails. 

Choosing The Top 15 Scenic Standouts

The couple kept notes. They noted that they evaluated each park on specific criteria including crowds, facilities, scenery, trails, and, because of their personal interests, “how photogenic it was.” They narrowed things down to 15 “most scenic” parks. Most of them also scored points for their hiking trails and were also often considered “the most photogenic.” Some of their choices may seem more obvious than others as some are more famous than others.

The 15 Best US National Parks 

15.  Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

The traveling twosome began their love affair with the United States’ noteworthy natural wildernesses here in the state’s magnificent mountainous national park. Indeed, the couple had relocated from their native land of Australia to live in the city of Boulder. Thus, Rocky Mountain National Park was their “first local park.”  

When they once more hiked the trails there as part of their evaluation process, they could not help but experience a bit of nostalgia. This park has numerous peaks to see and offers the adventurous a lot of choices including camping, hiking, the opportunity to see wildlife and take in incredible views. Perhaps one of the park’s most famous routes is the Trail Ridge Road. It is the official “highest paved road in any of the nation’s national parks and is over 12,000 feet above sea level. Keep your eyes open for bears, bighorn sheep, elk, and mountain lions.

Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska

Nestled on the Kenai Peninsula, the state’s smallest US park still features a beautiful combination of covers, glaciers, rugged headlands, and, of course, fjords. One of the highlights is the Harding Icefield, found along the Harding Icefield Trail. All you see from the top is a horizon of snow and ice.

This coastal park is home to black bears, coyotes, moose, and wolverines. You will also discover numerous marine birds that fish and nest here. Don’t miss the harbor seals, sea otters, and Steller sea lions either. Book a scenic flight, ski the winter ice fields, or rent a kayak and explore the hidden bays here.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska

This impressive park features beautiful glaciers, rivers, and snow-capped peaks. It’s the country’s largest national park. Indeed, if you combine this place with the neighboring parks, you have the largest international protected wilderness in the world.

The picture-taking pair hiked to Root Glacier during their visit and were in awe of this remote park’s frozen canyons, and blue ice, and pool. Feeling adventurous? Get a guide and go ice-climbing. Other veteran visitors suggest learning something about copper mining by taking the historic tour of the popular Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark.

Denali National Park, Alaska

This national park is named for its biggest attraction, majestic Mount Denali. It is 20,320 feet tall and the highest mountain in the nation. High adventure enthusiasts are drawn here for its remote campsites and backcountry hiking trails.

Denali is the home of such wildlife as brown bears, caribou, elk, and more. Take the two-mile loop trail that runs by Savage River if you prefer a less challenging trail. If you want to go deeper into the more remote areas, sign on for one of the different ranger-guided hikes. You’ll learn about the park’s cultural history, geology, and fascinating flora and fauna too. You can also enjoy a popular tundra wilderness tour if you really want to see caribou, coyotes, grizzly bears, moose, and wolves as well.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Perhaps the highlight here is the park’s eponymous active volcano. While it’s possible to enjoy it any time of the year, the Hahnels suggest visiting in the summer. While they confirm the landscapes are exceptional “all year round,” what makes it “really special” in the summer months is the various wildflowers that flow over the meadows located just below the peak.

Towering Mount is always remarkable. Still, hiking through the wildflower-filled meadows, dense pine forests, and even the “spray of waterfalls” is an exceptional experience. Be sure to explore all five areas: Carbon/Mowich, Longmire, Ohanapecosh, Paradise, and Sunrise. The Hahnels specifically recommend hiking Mt. Fremont Lookout Trail, the Tolmie Peak Trail, and the Skyline Trail Loop.

Yosemite National Park, California

Not only is this park well-known for its beauty, but it is also known to some as a great place to discover hidden gems and enjoy “off-the-beaten-path adventures.” The Aussie couple can’t say enough about the backcountry trails found in Mariposa Grove and Tuolumne Meadows for those who want to get away from the crowds. They also praised the park’s popular Half Dome.  

They noted that the views from the summit are “breathtaking.” Other memorable memories from their September visit include the view from Cathedral Lakes following “a fresh snowstorm.” They suggest taking the seven-mile loop trail that begins at the Cathedral Lakes trailhead.

Zion National Park, Utah

This park is quite popular with hikers and other outdoor adventure aficionados. The waterfalls, rivers, and canyons are epic. The heart of this hot spot is Zion Canyon.  

One trail here amidst the scarlet-cliffed gorges leads into the well-known Narrows. The traveling twosome favors the view of the large sandstone walls and describes the feeling as “something from another world.” For those who enjoy challenges, they recommend the trail to Angels Landing via the West Rim Trail. They also suggest the Subway trails and the trail to Observation Point.

Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

The nigh-pristine marine wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park is accessible only by air. Located in the southeast, it is most famous for its tidewater and alpine glaciers. Best seen by kayak or boat, this place scored highly for its beauty and diverse wildlife. If you want a bird’s eye view as well, you can book a flight-seeing trip from the city of Juneau.

If you’re prone to outdoor adventures, take in the sight of the deep fjords, glacial lakes, rainforests, and snowy peaks via a kayaking tour out of Bartlett Cove. You might spot bald eagles, black moose, porpoise, sea otters, or seals. Check out the Icy Strait right outside the park, if you wish to see some minke whales or orcas.

Lake Clark National Park, Alaska

According to the Hahnels, their “best experience” on this particular trip was in the off-the-beaten-path place known as Lake Clark National Park. They spent three days in an out-of-the-way cabin surrounded by mountains and nestled next to the 50-mile-long, turquoise-tinged Lake Clark. The camping couple had a good time foraging for wild berries to use in their breakfast pancakes.

They went fishing for lake trout which they ate for dinner. They also went canoeing and hiking. This blue-glaciered place can only be accessed by air or sea. Mind you, this practically guarantees you some crowd-free time among the ice, rivers, and snowy mountains. If you want to rough it, you can camp here as well. If you’re into wildflowers, wait until summer to visit.

Glacier National Park, Montana

You will find this park on the border between Alberta, Canada, and the state of Montana. Highlights here include great glaciers, gorgeous granite peaks, lovely lakes, and majestic mountains. There are a number of different hiking trails here if you enjoy hiking.

If you prefer scenic drives, the park is part of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Its 53 miles of forest-clad peaks, shining lakes, flower-covered valleys, and gorgeous gorges. Be sure to check out the highest part of this drive, Logan Pass. The views here may make you dizzy. This is also a great place to see bears, big-horn sheep, elk, and mountain goats.

Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Rumor has it that many people come here for the big fish and brown bears. Nestled upon the Alaska Peninsula, most travelers arrive here via a floatplane. This park made the list mainly because of the wildlife here.  

Each July and August, literally thousands of brown bears gather here to catch and gorge on the sumptuous sockeye salmon in Brooks River. You can see them from a surprisingly close distance and still remain safe. This is obviously also a real bucket list destination for fishermen. 

The lakes here are home to five species of tasty Pacific salmon, as well as Arctic char, and rainbow trout. Go kayaking or rafting around the chain of rivers and lakes named the Savonoski Loop. Take a hike around the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes too.

Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Situated in the Brooks Range, the most northern mountain range on the continent of North America, this remote park is accessible only by boat, foot, or plane. It has no buildings or man-made hiking trails. The pair of shutterbugs said this is the park they would “most like to photograph again” because they “had to pack light” on their trip and had to leave their larger cameras behind.

Take in the stunning views on a rafting trip along the wild rivers. See the untouched wilderness. Go hiking around the rugged Arrigetch Peaks with their jagged granite spires, plunging valleys, and intense blue alpine lakes.

Famous for its geothermal features and impressive peaks, this national park is mainly located in the northwestern section of Wyoming but also extends into the states of Idaho and Montana. It is the planet’s first national park. The Hahnels fondly remember hiking the popular Upper Geyser Basin Trail in order to see the great geyser erupt at sunset.

The national park’s plentiful peaks, forests, rivers, and meadows are the home of bears, bighorn sheep, bison, coyotes, deer, elk, moose, and wolves. Be sure to explore the Lamar River Trail too.

Olympic National Park, Washington

The Olympic National Park is largely a lush, vibrant green rainforest. The floor of which is, as the touring twosome confirm, “thickly blanketed with moss and ferns.” They describe the locale as both “magnificent” and “enchanting.”

There are several hiking trails that run ‘round the ancient rainforests and wind their way along the primitive Pacific coastline, which is pleasantly punctuated by several sea stacks. Lovely Lake Crescent is perhaps one of the popular Olympic Peninsula’s most memorable landmarks.  

It is famous for its bounty of fish and beautiful blue water. You can rent a boat here or even take a dip if you’re so inclined. Mind you, they could be a bit chilly. If so, worry not as there are comfy hot springs nearby. 

If you’re a climber, you can’t miss the great glacier-clad Mount Olympus. Into photography? The Hahnels say the best places to take pictures here are Ruby Beach, Sol Duc Falls, and the Hoh Rain Forest.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

You will find rugged rivers, shining lakes, snow-capped granite peaks, and plenty of wildlife in Grand Teton National Park. The park is named for its highest peak, the Grand Teton, which stands 13,770 feet high. The planet paparazzi state that This park took top honors on their list because of “its combination of extreme beauty and accessibility.” 

This wilderness in the Rockies is reportedly perfect for hiking. The Hahnels favor the Cascade Canyon Trail hike to sparkling Lake Solitude. You might even see bears, beavers, otters, and moose. Finally, the couple also appreciated its proximity to the town of Jackson. Travelers can stay in Jackson, go there for a day trip, take in “some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth,” then return to Jackson for a wonderful dinner.

Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Canyonlands National Park in Moab is the state’s largest national park. It’s divided into three sections: the popular, panoramic Island in the sky, the colorful Needles district, and the “no man’s land” known as the Maze. The best time to visit this park is actually from the month of December through February. This park is in reality a number of natural amphitheaters. They are located approximately one mile up and are only referred to as a “canyon” for advertising purposes. Some travel writers say that this place is actually more attractive during the winter months when the striking orange of the park is offset by the glistening snow.All four major viewpoints–Bryce Point, Inspiration Point, Sunrise Point, and Sunset Point offer visitors magnificent views.

Even in the winter, this national park is the driest, hottest place in the United States. During the winter months, the daytime temperatures are quite comfortable and you can explore the place free of crowds. It’s a great place to go hiking.
