Indeed, if you’re into hiking Spring is the best time to take such treks as the Beaver Mountain Trail Hike, the Horseshoe Park Hike, and the Upper Beaver Meadow Loop.

Yes, some hiking trails are covered with snow until May but you can always rent snowshoes in Grand or Estes Park. If you want to enjoy the scenic Trail Ridge Road, get there in the middle of May. Everglades National Park 

This national park in Florida is the nation’s largest subtropical wilderness. It spans an area of 1.5 million acres. Why go see the alligators, American crocodiles, birds, manatees, panthers, turtles, and other Everglades residents in the Spring?

It’s the weather! In the Spring, it is warm, but it isn’t hot and humid. It’s a big place and has three different entrances.

The main entrance is near Homestead at the informative Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center. If you’re based closer to Naples, enter at the Gulf Coast Visitor Center. Your third option is the North Entrance, Shark Valley.

Yellowstone National Park 

Yellowstone should be on everyone’s list. However, visiting during the months of April and May has its advantages. For it is at this time of the year that the snowmelt begins, beautiful wildflowers grow again, and baby bison are born.  

You will also find it easier to locate a parking space and it’s too early for the summer crowds! Mind you, during the month of April, some of the roads and even accommodations are not open. So enter the park via the north/northeast entrance and book a hotel room nearby.  

In May, all the roads are open. All lodgings are available as well. You can use any entrance you choose. You can stay inside the park too. Your choices here include the Old Faithful Inn, Mammoth Hot Springs, and Canyon Village. The restaurants are also open.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park is famous for its thousands of sandstone pillars known as hoodoos. They evoke an alien-like atmosphere that makes a truly memorable first impression. While this park is open year-round, it’s snowy and too cold for anyone not interested in winter vacations.

In the summer it can be too hot and is generally crowded too. Ah, but in spring, the crowds have yet to arrive, and the weather is cooler and reportedly perfect for hiking. The assorted eateries are open again, the local hotels are open, and the park’s free shuttle is running once more.

Biscayne National Park 

This park, 63 miles from Ft. Lauderdale International Airport, is yet another reason to visit Florida in the Spring. Here you can escape the chill still hanging in the air elsewhere, and spend your time boating, snorkeling, or swimming in the comparatively warm water. Although it is open all year, in the spring weather is neither too hot nor too cold.

The average temperature ranges from 66 degrees Fahrenheit to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Be sure to visit the popular Boca Chita Key. It’s one of the park’s official “most visited places.”

Hike to the lovely lighthouse there. Hike the trail there and explore the scenery on this island too. You can also take a boat tour and do a little snorkeling around the world’s third-largest barrier reef there too. Admission to the park is free.

Capitol Reef

Visit Utah’s Capitol Reef in spring and enjoy the cooler but comfortable temperature and the newly-blooming desert wildflowers. You can hike the trails here and avoid the summer crowds. This place offers visitors a unique and active getaway. It is famous for its rugged rock formations due to its location on a water pocket fold that’s 100 miles in length. Here you can explore these colored rocks a.k.a. reefs created by many, many years of erosion.  

Hike to Sunset Point as well and enjoy the incredible views. Visit Cassidy Arch and climb to the top of this 666-foot, natural arch of sandstone. Stop at the historic town of Fruita on your way home too.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Spring is a great time to visit this national park in your rovin’ writer’s birth state. You will find this park on the Big Island. It’s a popular UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is highlighted by a pair of active shield volcanoes. They are the Kilauea, and the largest volcano in the world, the Mauna Loa.  

Oddly, while the state of Hawaii is associated with a sunny climate, the park’s 4,000-foot elevation frequently results in fog and rain. Thus, the park itself can be very humid in the summer, and quite wet in the winter. Since summer and winter are quite busy here, prices are the highest. Visit the park’s natural landmark in the spring and you’ll pay less for your stay, enjoy better weather in the park itself, and avoid the tourists too.

Zion National Park

Beautiful Zion National Park in Southern Utah is yet another one of the best parks to see in the Spring. Famous for its twisting canyon and tall, rainbow-tinted red rocks, you can enjoy the assorted attractions here free of the summer heat and tourists. In springtime, the weather is warm enough for people to explore the park.

An entire area is closed in the winter because of snowfall. Furthermore, while spring mornings and nights can be chilly, it’s easier to deal with than the extreme summer heat. Springtime’s also the best time to see the sunrise here. Winter weather obscures the beauty. In the summer, sunrise is so early you have to head out way too early to reach the best viewpoints to see it.

Death Valley

Spectacular Death Valley is reportedly the most exciting in springtime. For it is then you get to enjoy the superb Super Bloom! Specifically, the distinctive Death Valley Super Bloom is actually a rare, noteworthy natural phenomenon when thousands of wildflowers bloom all over the desert.

Joshua Tree National Park

The park spans an area of almost 600,000 acres of wilderness, straddles two California deserts, and includes 300 miles of hiking trails. Veteran visitors can confirm springtime is the best time to visit this International Dark Sky Park. Unlike summertime, the spring weather is never higher than 72 degrees Fahrenheit and never cooler than 48 degrees Fahrenheit.  

Plus, you avoid the summer tourist crowds. There will be less competition for spots in the daily ranger programs. There are also fewer four-wheel drive vehicles off-roading on the numerous backcountry trails.  

There are fewer rock climbers and birders in the park in springtime too. Newbies may want to use the north entrance found in Twentynine Palms. If you want to see the Milky Way here, consider camping here for a weekend.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The popular Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the two states of North Carolina and Tennessee deep within the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s reported to be America’s most popular national park. Over 14 million people visited this place back in 2021.

Spring is a great time to visit this park. The weather is cooler, the crowds are comparatively smaller, and the beautiful rhododendron and mountain laurels are starting to bloom. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is also perfect for animal lovers because they can see North Carolina’s very last herd of wild Elk here near Cherokee. From the middle of May to early June, the Cataloochee Valley Elk give birth. Spring’s also a great time for birdwatching, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing, and day-hiking on sections of the Appalachian Trail.

Arches National Park

Another special spring destination is Utah’s Arches National Park. You not only beat the surprisingly large summer crowds, but you also beat the summer heat. Indeed, the springtime weather is beautiful and mild.

You only need a couple of days to see most of this park and the hikes to most of the arches are relatively easy and short. Of course, if you’re feeling athletic and really want more of a challenge, do the three-mile hike to the distinctive Delicate Arch. Shenandoah National Park

Winter at this Virginia national park is often harsh but in the spring the wildflowers appear, and everything seems new. The 500+ miles of sometimes historical hiking trails are once again clear because the snow has melted and the waterfalls thunder to life. This is especially great since a number of the hiking trails are actually waterfall trails.

Saguaro National Park

Arizona’s Saguaro National Park is a great place to be from March through April. The desert is sunny with an average daily temperature range between 75 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit. It is unique in that it is a national park that has two individualistic areas that are roughly a one-hour drive apart.

1. Kartchner Caverns State Park

This state park is located outside of Benson. This cave system was discovered by cave enthusiasts Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts in 1974. The limestone Kartchner Caverns are highlighted by the longest stalactite structure in the world, developing stalagmites, unique minerals, a large bat population, and numerous nooks and cavernous crannies to see.

Be the Gilligan of the spelunking set, and be sure to book and take the “three-hour tour.” You can visit even on the hottest day in summer because these caves are kept at a comfy 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Here you can see the different travertine rock formations up close and gain a truer understanding of the time required to form the fragile towers and spindles and geology in general. You can also go camping, go hiking, do some wildlife viewing, and rent a cabin if you don’t like tents. Visit the Discovery Center too. The entrance fee here is $7.00 per vehicle.

Soldier Pass Cave

Hikers who are cave-curious will enjoy the easily accessible Soldiers Pass Cave Spur Trail just three miles from downtown Sedona. It’s a less-than-three-mile out-and-back hiking trail often rife with pretty wildflowers, is family-friendly, and fine for hikers of all skill levels. The most popular activities here are hiking and wildlife viewing.  

This cave not only provides summer visitors with cool shade from the Arizona heat but also allows them to enjoy watching the interior colors change as the sun changes position. The gated lot at Soldier Pass Trailhead No. 66 only has a dozen or so parking spots so get there early. Otherwise, you will end up parking on the street and adding almost another mile to your hike.

Check the signs too because you are not allowed to just park anywhere on the street. The trailhead has set hours. It’s open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Interested in taking in the sunrise or sunset? Then park on the street.

The Birthing Cave

While you’re in Sedona, check out the Birthing Cave too. There’s an easy, flat, wide, two-mile out-and-back hiking trail to this shallow cave nestled on the side of a small cliff. It has a large diamond-shaped opening overlooking the city’s red rocks.

Oddly, while this cave is supposedly quite popular and the cave can be busy with other hikers, the trail itself is rather uncrowded and peaceful, all things considered. Veteran visitors suggest parking off the road at the Long Canyon Trailhead and starting your hike there. Unlike the parking lots at Devil’s Bridge or Cathedral Rock, the parking lot at the trailhead is surprisingly small.  

Be sure to watch for an obvious hollow in the face of the rock. That’s where you will discover the Birthing Cave. If you like wildflowers, visit between early March through May. Otherwise, the temperatures can be just as nice during September and October. The cave faces east so try to see the sunrise there.

The Subway Cave

The Boynton Canyon Trail will lead you to the once-hidden gem known as Subway Cave in Sedona. While this secret cave is no longer so secret, much of the trail and even the cave itself are still unmarked and easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. If the parking lot at the Boynton Canyon Trailhead is full, park a short distance away on Boynton Pass Road. Keep track of how far you hike because the turnoff that leads to the cave is near the second mile.  

It is not marked and is easy to miss. Veteran visitors can confirm that some locals and even other hikers sometimes throw branches across the turnoff in order to hide it. Ah, but while this trail is sometimes hard to follow and is often overgrown, the cave is incredible inside. Be sure to get a gander at the striking Native American ruins right on the ledge along the left side of the cave too.

Shaman’s Cave also known as Robbers’ Roost

Also known as the Hide Out Cave, you will find this cave just northwest of Sedona. Local legend has it that this cave was once a hideout for assorted bootleggers and bandits. It’s accessible from any of the town’s high vantage points.

In 1932 a movie titled Robbers’ Roost was filmed close to the city. No one has unarguably verified whether or not part of it was shot here at this popular off-the-beaten-path cave. It certainly provides visitors with exceptional panoramic views of the surrounding area and thus would make a great hideaway. The hiking trail to the renowned roost is less than one mile out and back but it is rocky and steep so watch your step if you choose to explore this cave.

Lava River Cave

Travel to Flagstaff to the well-known Coconino National Forest. For it is there you can explore the long lava tube known as the Lava River Cave. It was formed by a large volcanic eruption about 700,000 years ago.

If you want to cool off, the best time to visit is in the summer. The caves are, on average, only 40 degrees Fahrenheit and you might even spot a bit of ice. Even in the summer, you should take thick clothing, because the cave and its connected caverns can actually drop to under 30 degrees.

You’ll have to do your homework before entering though since it is a “self-guided trip.” Another reason to visit in the warmer months is that the roads can be shut down in the winter. In fact, in the winter the more athletic visitors can actually ski into this cave when there’s enough snow. So check on road conditions if you’re interested. Admission is free.

Colossal Cave Mountain Park  

The colossal cave system called Colossal Cave is conveniently situated 22 miles out of Tucson. More specifically, it’s located in a beautiful, 2,400-acre mountain park. It includes some of the area’s best caves.

You can learn about the cave’s interesting geological composition, history, and legends by taking the popular half-mile guided tour. One of the most popular tours takes less than one hour.

Walking down almost 400 steps here will make you seem as if you’re on a journey to the center of the earth. The tours are offered daily and the price charged depends on your choice of tour. The classic cave tour is family-friendly and no extra equipment is required.  

The most challenging is the three-and-a-half-mile tour is the most in-depth and rigorous. Be warned, you will get dirty, trekking through small passageways, pitch-black tunnels, and tight spaces. Schedule your visit at the right time and watch hundreds of bats fly from these caves after sunset. Admission is free.

The Grand Canyon Caverns

You will find this cave in the Peach Springs area unsurprisingly close to the Grand Canyon. Formally discovered in 1927, this now-protected cavern system has limestone walls that are reported to be “geologically identical” to the cliffs of the famous canyon. It is the largest dry cavern in the world.

In order to reach this admittedly eerie cave system, you must ride an elevator 21 floors, between 200 and 300 feet. Upon arrival, you have a choice between four different walking tours of different difficulty levels. An advanced tour will take you deeper into less visited areas of the cavern system and involves equipment.

The beginner tour is family-friendly and fine for all interested parties. It’s just a comparatively short walk that focuses on the larger sections of the system. If you are visiting the Grand Canyon and have additional time, a visit to these caverns will add even more adventure to your vacation. Fees vary according to your tour choices.

Peppersauce Cave

Peppersauce Cave, less than 10 miles from Tuscon in Oracle, is actually a system of limestone caves. Specifically located in the Coronado National Forest, it can only be reached via dirt roads that are reportedly poorly maintained. While there is a roadside sign directing you to the official entrance, there are no tours offered.

Despite featuring its own lake, the cave system remains in a primitive state. There are no visitor facilities either. You must squeeze through a tight opening in order to get inside.

The rocks here are generally wet and slippery so along with the required headlamps (preferably on helmets), experts strongly recommend visitors wear non-slip shoes too. Knee and elbow pads aren’t a bad idea either. Do not visit if rain is in the forecast as the water levels here can rise dangerously. The “Big Room” and “The Rabbit Hole” are popular places if you prefer assistance in accessing parts of this system. Admission is free.

The Wave Cave

Journey to Gold Canyon to visit the Wave Cave. It’s probably the only place in the state where you can go surfing in the desert. Here you must first hike through the striking Superstition Mountains to a distinctive rock formation that looks like a wave coming out of a cave.

The hike is three miles round trip and rated as difficult due in part to the 860+-foot elevation gain. The final climb to this cave is considered strenuous and you’ll have to use your hands. The good news is that the cave is big enough to fit a number of hikers seeking relief from the infamous Arizona Sun.  

Watch your step on your hike down because there’s a lot of loose gravel and the slope is somewhat steep as well. Do not attempt this pleasant albeit challenging trek on the hottest summer days. There is a $15.00 fee for parking.

Onyx Cave  

Head for the rugged Santa Rita Mountains and the Coronado National Forest to explore the limestone maze of rooms and passageways known as Onyx Cave. Various geological pressures slowly cracked the aged limestone here. Water rushed through the cracks, the cracks grew larger, and eventually resulted in this well-known cave.

The cave was declared an official National Natural Landmark in 1974 and fenced off to keep it safe from damage and vandalism. Today, after restorative efforts, it is back to its original condition. While it is reportedly challenging to reach, it is also possible to have the whole place all to yourself for several hours.  

Now owned by Escabrosa Grotto, Inc., all visitors must make reservations for a visit and gate key at least two weeks ahead of time. Once you’ve done that, you are all set to explore this cave system unencumbered by too many other visitors.

Wind Cave

One of the most popular hikes in Mesa is the trek to Wind Cave. It is three miles in total and includes an elevation gain of almost 800 feet. It should take you no more than a total of two hours.

The terrain here is fairly dominated by palo verde and desert cacti. In fact, it is often comparatively dense with Saguaros. If you hike up there early enough, you’ll be shaded from the sun the entire time.

Once you arrive at the comparatively shallow cave you will be rewarded with not only cooling shade but a memorable view too. The view of downtown Phoenix and other sections of the valley will surprise you. Don’t be in a rush to hike back down though as the trail’s totally exposed to the Arizona sun in the afternoon.  

Parking is limited so get here early. The trailhead is well-marked and has restrooms too. You must buy a day pass for $7.00.

Keyhole Cave

Another required Sedona stop for spelunkers and hikers curious about caves is the Keyhole Cave. You’ll take the moderately-trafficked Sugarloaf Trail to reach this cave. It’s a 2+-mile out-and-back hiking trail that’s open year-round.

You can even bring your dog if you keep him on a leash. Be sure to get here early though because the parking is limited and street parking is not allowed. From the Sugarloaf Trailhead, you’ll actually be able to see the cave in the distance.  

See that huge gaping opening in the mountainside? That’s it! The best time to visit this cave is whenever there is no snow. Otherwise, the hike will not only be steep but will be quite slick too.  

Don’t try this hike immediately after a good rainfall either for similar reasons. Remember that much of this hike is in a wash. So if there’s a good chance of rain, just stay home and don’t risk being caught in a flash flood.

The Coronado Cave  

This cave in Hereford close to the Arizona-Mexico border is actually a subject of much debate amongst hardcore spelunkers. Some argue that it is a large cave with a number of rooms, and others think it is a comparatively small cave. Admission is free but you need to get a free permit at the official visitor center.

The fact is that the cave is as wide as 70 feet in some sections and almost 600 feet long. Depending on your size, you may have to do some crawling in order to get from one section to another. The hike here can be a bit challenging for some since it includes a 500-foot ascent within the first half-mile.

Veteran visitors claim this is the best cave in the entire state for spelunking due in part to its reputed “mysterious aura.” While it is an official part of the popular Coronado National Memorial Park, no state-run guided tours are offered. Admission is free.

The Cave of the Bells

This cave, nestled in Coronado National Forest’s striking Sawmill Canyon in Patagonia, provides perhaps people with the state’s most fun spelunking experience. You have to hike for four miles up a dirt road to reach this place. If you’re not feeling athletic, drive a high-clearance or 4WD there.

Believe it or not, the inside of the cave is actually warm. There’s also a permanent lake not too far from the cave entrance. This underground lake is roughly 263 feet below the surface. The official lake tunnel entry leads to this well-known underground lake.  

Strangely, the deeper you hike, the warmer the temperature of both the air and the lake. Experts say this happens because there is actually some heat source under the surface of the lake. Be aware that, just like Onyx Cave, the entrance to this cave is gated and locked.

Due to this cave’s extremely delicate environment, travelers must contact the Coronado National Forest Supervisor’s office, make reservations, and leave a deposit of $100.00 to get the keys. When the gate keys are returned, the deposit is refunded.

The town of Marquette is found on the coast of well-known Lake Superior. It’s reportedly the snowiest place east of the Rockies. Indeed, this winter wonderland receives almost 150 inches of snow on average.

Fairbanks is close to the town of North Pole, the state’s second-largest city, and one of the country’s best winter destinations. Visit at the beginning of Winter Solstice and watch as the city is blanketed in snow and the storefronts and streetlights are decked out in garland, lights, and tinsel. Perhaps the most popular activities here are focused on dog sledding, hot springs, reindeer ranches, and seeing the Northern Lights. Wisconsin

Yes, this state has some of the nation’s coldest temperatures in winter. Still, there are many fun winter activities to be found here. Visit Door County and go ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.

You can also take a fun winter wine tour and snowy sleigh ride, and then warm up with a real, old-school fish fry. There are also the ice caves of Apostle Island located in Bayfield. Found along lovely Lake Superior, they are in part the result of waves splashing onto the rock and partially freezing onto the cliff. Visit between late January through late February, since the lake has to be frozen solid in order to access the caves.

Duluth, Minnesota

Duluth is found in the northern part of the state on the shores of well-known Lake Superior. There’s a surprising variety of both indoor and outdoor activities here and thus it is one of the country’s most underrated winter destinations. For example, there’s the annual Bentleyville “Tour of Lights”, which is the biggest, free seasonal light festival in the nation.

Spirit Mountain is great for skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and snow tubing too. Indoor activities include a weekend tour of the local assorted eateries. Veteran visitors recommend the Zeitgeist. It’s a nice diner complete with a boutique movie theater that focuses on indie films. There’s also the Rathskeller cocktail bar, situated in the old city hall building.

Denver, Colorado

Denver is a great place for a winter weekend getaway. It’s close enough to the mountains to go skiing but it offers other activities. Head to Union Station where you’ll take in the sight of the quaint historic train station decorated for the holidays.

Do some ice skating in Skyline Park. If you have your own skates, it’s free. If not, you can rent adult skates for $9.00 or $7.00 for children aged 12 and under. Foodies can explore the Denver Central Food Market and get some culture at the Denver Art Museum. Be sure to see the towering 110-foot tree of lights in the center of the city throughout December.

Joshua Tree, California

Some say this is one of those must-see places that is often too hot in the summer to truly enjoy. After all, most of the year, it’s generally 99 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Ah, but if you want to beat the heat, visit Joshua Tree from December through March when you can more comfortably explore this beautiful 794,000-acre area.

Hike the Indian Cove Trail, which leaves clues about the Native American tribes that once lived here, or climb the famous “Chasm of Doom” which is the result of numerous huge boulders that are pressed together to form a rugged tunnel-like canyon. Get a good look at the iconic trees there as well.

 Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Rocky Mountain National Park is yet another place that becomes a wonderful winter wonderland when the temperatures drop. While a portion of the park is closed in the winter, there is still a lot to do here. You can go cross-country or back-country skiing.

Put on your microspikes or snowshoes and do some winter hiking. Hike to Dream, Nymph, and Emerald Lakes. It is quite pretty in the winter and is less than four miles total. The trailhead is at Bear Lake. If you enjoy spotting wildlife, you are in luck. Indeed, it is not uncommon for park visitors to see such four-legged residents as bighorn sheep and even elk.

Mt Baker, Washington

If you enjoy snowy adventures, head to Mt Baker in Washington State’s Cascade Mountain range. The friendly Mt Baker Ski Resort is one of the nation’s few existing family-run ski resorts. Here you’ll find newbie-friendly runs to off-piste skiing for skiers who are more advanced.

It’s not one of the larger resorts and thus there are generally not long lift lines and the slopes are comparatively quiet. The prices are lower here too. Furthermore, this place usually gets the largest snowfall of any of the other resorts in the lower 48. If you’d rather go snowshoeing, the Artist Point snowshoe trail is highly recommended. It’s a well-marked trail and only four miles in length.

Leavenworth, Washington

If you can’t afford to go see the Christmas Markets in Europe, despair not! Travel to the charming Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth. Although it’s just two hours from Seattle, your drive will take you to a place that seems far from there.

As the December holidays approach, Leavenworth becomes a twinkling scene from a seasonal snow globe. Visit the town’s gazebo and enjoy live music by performers in traditional German clothing as your kids go sledding there. Enjoy the famous Christmas lighting events held there on the weekends.  

Want to avoid the crowds? Visit after Christmas, as the businesses there keep the lights lit throughout winter. You can go skiing, snowshoeing and hot-tubbing too.

Hike To An Alpine Teahouse

Some of the hiking trails in the park include alpine teahouses that you will see along the way. This provides visitors with yet another fun and unique experience. For those not in the know, an alpine teahouse is a small cabin on a hiking trail that offers hikers various snacks and tea that’s actually made from real local glacial water.

They generally serve sandwiches, cookies, and, of course, tea. So you’re getting a little taste of the park by stopping here. There are two hiking trails in the park that include teahouses.  

They are Plain of Six Glaciers and Lake Agnes. Visit in the summer though because that’s the only time they are open for business. They don’t have electricity and only accept cash. So be sure to have some Canadian currency on you.

Tasty toppings may include cinnamon, fresh fruit, M&Ms, Nutella, and more. You can choose from a number of pre-made determined combos or create your own yummy masterpiece! Beaver Tails aren’t actually unique to the town, but it’s still a Canadian favorite and a great way to reward yourself after a hard day of hiking in the park.

Sample Banff’s Craft Beers And Spirits

Banff is not only a great place for eats, but it’s also a great place for exceptional craft beer and local spirits. Unwind with a local adult beverage after your long day of adventure in the park. The previously mentioned Park Distillery offers homemade cocktails and even conducts tours of their distillery.

You can check out the town’s original brewery, the Banff Ave Brewing Co. There you will have your choice of several different entrees and bar snacks and, most importantly, several beers on tap. So sample some poutine, or warm pretzels, and experience this memorable brewery.

Have Brunch At Chateau Lake Louise

If you really want to treat yourself, enjoy brunch at the Chateau Lake Louise’s restaurant, the Poppy Brasserie. Get there early and get a table overlooking the lake. Those in the know say the view alone is worth the price of the meal.

The eatery’s extensive menu here offers dishes for both omnivores and vegetarians. They offer both an a-la-carte menu and a buffet. You need to remember though that the restaurant prioritizes seating guests of the hotel.  

So, if you go there on an especially crowded day, you will probably have to wait a bit. The doors open at 6:30 a.m., so if you get there early you have a pretty good chance of being seated quickly if you arrive before the others even wake up.

Do you love stunning views but just don’t want to hike the better part of the day for it? Then take a ride on the enjoyable Banff Gondola. This convenient cable car will take you up to an exceptional observation deck to provide passengers with some of the most incredible views in the entire park.

After an adventurous day in the park, unwind in the welcoming Banff Upper Hot Springs. This big outdoor pool is not only full of warm water, but it overlooks the forests and mountains below it as well. Soak in the warmth and the stunning view of the setting sun.

Ah, but this is more than a relaxing activity, it is also one that’s reasonably priced. It’s CAD 8.30 per person. If you don’t take your own towel, you can rent one for an additional CAD 1.90. In fact, you can actually rent swimwear if you didn’t think to pack your own.

Hit The Slopes

If you’re a skier, Banff is the place to be in the winter. Indeed, it’s also a hot spot for snowboarders, and all the other winter sports fans. Banff National Park is home to a trio of world-famous ski resorts.

They are Lake Louise, Mt. Norquay, and Sunshine Meadows. If you’re a hardcore skier and plan to spend your entire visit skiing, look into getting a Big 3 Lift Ticket. You’ll get access to all of the park’s ski resorts.  

Additionally, you’ll be able to ride the shuttle from almost every major hotel in Banff to the resorts. Helen

Covington

 Tybee Island

The classic southern beach town of Tybee Island is situated about 30 minutes from the Savannah Historic District. Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

Outdoor enthusiasts can go hiking at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, or CRNRA, all year. This 48-mile expanse along the famed Chattahoochee River is fairly full of noteworthy hiking trails. Indeed, this recreational area is separated into 10 individual sections of trails.  

In total there are almost 66 miles of hiking trails here. They are largely wooded, dirt trails located near the river ranging in difficulty between easy to moderate. They are all well marked by trail markers and maps are available. A few of the trails are even open to mountain bikers.

One of the most popular hiking trails here is the East Palisades Trail due in large part to the bamboo forest there. Hikers into history prefer the Sope Creek hike which features some Civil War ruins that people can actually climb around on if they so choose.

Providence Canyon State Park

Travel to the city of Lumpkin, roughly 40 minutes out of Columbus. For it is here you will find the less famous Providence Canyon State Park. Spanning an area of over 1,000 acres, it is known to some as “the Little Grand Canyon.” Formed in the 1800s as a result of both natural forces and poor farming practices, this canyon is up to 150 feet deep.  

Explore the stark, rugged rock formations for which this place is known. Go camping here and hike the nigh-legendary White Blaze Canyon Loop Trail as well. Before you leave, be sure to check out the strange, abandoned homestead here that features almost a dozen rusting, abandoned 1950s-era vehicles that remain there in order to avoid damaging the local environment. Get to the park early if you visit on a weekend because that’s when it’s the busiest.

Cumberland Island

Beautiful Cumberland Island is a barrier island just off the coast of the Georgia-Florida Border. The island is only accessible by a ferry that docks twice a day, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. For $45.00 each, you can take the educational Lands and Legacies tour and see the Dungeness Ruins, the First African Baptist Church, the Plum Orchard Mansion, and more.

You can rent bicycles at the visitor center and do your own thing too. Don’t forget to check out the beaches, and the island’s wild horses as well. Want to stay longer? Spend a few nights at the island’s sole hotel, the Greyfield Inn.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

Fort Pulaski and its surrounding moat were constructed in the mid-1800s. A visit here can easily be incorporated with a visit to Savannah. In fact, the physical address is listed as Savannah even though it seems so far away.

This fort played a historic part in the infamous Civil War. In 1862 there was a battle between the Union and Confederate armies, The Union won and retained control of the fort until the end of the war. Tour the fort and visit the museum too. Stroll the nature trails, see Tybee Island, the Savannah River, and the surrounding marsh as well.

Our next stop is The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument about 40 miles southwest of Santa Fe or less than an hour out of Albuquerque. Here you can wander through and wonder about huge natural cones of ash, pumice, and tuff deposits rising out of this unique landscape created by numerous volcanic eruptions over six to seven million years ago that covered the area in approximately 1,000 feet of natural debris. The rocks here look almost like tents, and many are as tall as 90 feet. For some great views, hike the easy Cave Loop Trail or the 1.5-mile Canyon Trail to see the Jemez, Sandia, and Sangre de Cristo Mountain ranges.

The Colorado National Monument, Colorado

The Colorado National Monument is a lot more than a mere monument. This striking smorgasbord of rugged rock formations rising from the ground near Grand Junction offers travelers the opportunity to explore a number of red-rock canyons, rough sandstone towers, and even tunnels. The Monument Rocks, Kansas

Monument Rocks is the country’s first official National Natural Landmark. Located in Gove County, south of Oakley, these 70-foot-tall towers of chalk mysteriously stand amidst raw ranchlands. It is believed that they are what remains of an ancient body of water that once filled middle America over 80 million years ago.

It is important to remember that you should not touch the rocks. They are quite susceptible to erosion and often contain fossils too. Veteran visitors say the easiest way to get here is to take “Gove County Roads 14 and 16” ‘til you see “Stonehenge-like structures” in the distance. Try to figure out which rock formation is named “Charlie the Dog.”

Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah

Unsurprisingly, Cedar Breaks National Monument is not far from Cedar City. This natural red-rock amphitheater is smaller than Bryce Canyon, but almost 1,500 feet higher. If you want to do the type of things you can do in Bryce but want to avoid crowds, this is the place to be.

Cedar Breaks includes hoodoos, spires, painted cliffs, and fir and spruce forests too. The main road is closed to automobiles in the winter. So, unless you are into snowshoeing, you should probably visit sometime between June through October. Hike the amphitheater’s rim; see the sunset here and go on a ranger-led star party as well.

Hells Canyon is a canyon that is ten miles in width and has a depth of nearly 8,000 feet. It is deeper than the Grand Canyon. In fact, it is the deepest river gorge in the United States.

Getaway From All The Crowds At Laguna Kaan Luum

This quiet getaway was once one of the best-kept secrets in Tulum. Laguna Kaan Luum is also a large cenote but it’s never as crowded as the previously mentioned “top three’ cenotes. The water here is a crystalline blue that changes its shade as the water becomes deeper. You can dive into the water from the pier but be careful as it’s only waist-deep in some places. If you’d rather just cool off and relax then hang out in one of the on-site hammocks.

Tulum’s most popular public beach is Playa Paraíso. But why not kick things up a notch with the comforts of an official beach club? Tulum’s beautiful beach clubs offer the opportunity to rent daybeds or even cabanas where you can eat, drink and do absolutely nothing.  

Some beach clubs have no entry fee. Others charge a minimal fee and/or require you to spend a minimum amount of money ranging anywhere from $10.00 to 160.00 USD. The more pricey beach clubs provide you with access to spa areas, pools, restaurants, rental boats, and other facilities.

Go Downtown

Tulum is more than beautiful beaches and verdant jungle. Tulum actually has two sections: pueblo, or town, and playa or beach. When you’ve had enough sun, go downtown. Experience the local flavor. Explore The Tulum Ruins

Another must-do here is seeing the Tulum Ruins. They’re located high upon the cragged cliffs above the sparkling Caribbean. This is one of the only walled cities constructed by the Mayans and the sole settlement they built on a beach.  

Pack your bathing suits and towels for this trip so that after exploring the ruins you can take a dip and refresh yourself and see the ruins from the sea. Visit the noteworthy Cobá ruins as well. If you’re lucky, the COVID restrictions will be lifted and you will be able to climb to the very top of the ruins again. Regardless, be sure to arrive early to avoid the crowds.

1.  The Sipsey Wilderness

Head for the northern section of the William B. Bankhead National Forest in the northwestern part of Alabama. Here you can explore the 25.809 acres of Sipsey Wilderness. Here you can go camping, hiking, and even horseback riding. Be sure to see beautiful Mize Mills Falls and the Turkey Foot Falls too.

2.  The Wrangell-Saint Elias Wilderness

According to the National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS), the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in Alaska is officially the “largest designated wilderness.” It includes a remarkable 9,432,000 acres and features wild rivers, remote valleys, and Mount Saint Elias, the nation’s second-highest peak. It’s 18,008 feet high. This wilderness is also home to black and grizzly bears, Dall sheep, moose, and mountain goats.

3.  The Mazatzal Wilderness Area

“Mazatzal” is Aztec for “an area inhabited by deer.” Oddly, at press time, there’s no proof that actual Aztecs ever visited this rugged mountainous region in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona. Here you will find 250,760 acres of striking wilderness. It includes semi-desert grassland, Sonoran Desert shrubland, more than 240 miles of hiking trails, and the state’s only Wild River Area.

4.  The Buffalo National River Wilderness

The isolated Buffalo National River Wilderness is in the Ozark National Forest, Arkansas. This 34,933-acre area is highlighted by the Buffalo River, towering dolomites, and beautiful, hidden waterfalls. This scenic place is perfect for such outdoor activities as canoeing, hiking, and wildlife-watching. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, black bears, and elk.

5.  The Yosemite Wilderness

Are you surprised to hear that 94 percent of the 704,624 acres of Yosemite National Park in California is designated wilderness? The surrounding national forest is stark white with snow during the winter months and lush, verdant green during the summer. Explore the towering sequoias, wonderful waterfalls, gorgeous glacier-filled lakes, and the 700+ miles of hiking trails here.

6.  The Lava Beds Wilderness

You will find the unique Lava Beds Wilderness is part of California’s Lava Bed National Monument. Born of ancient volcanic turmoil, this area encompasses 28,460 acres. See the vegetation-covered cinder cones, the yellow blazing star, western sword fern, and famous purple desert sage. Be sure to check out some of the 500 caves of oddly-shaped lava tubes too!     

7.  The Ventana Wilderness

The Ventana Wilderness’ 236,726 acres in Los Padres National Forest bestraddles the stunning Santa Lucia Mountains along California’s Central Coast. Here you can see craggy peaks, deep pools, deep valleys, major streams, sharp, steep ridges, thermal springs, and waterfalls. There are also 197 miles of hiking trails here. Travel writers confirm the 24-mile Pine Ridge Trail is the most popular.

8.  The Never Summer Wilderness

The 20,847 acres of the Never Summer Wilderness in Colorado’s Arapaho National Forest are subject to more rain and snow than summer sunshine. Highlights of this area include 17 peaks that tower over 12,000 high, a trio of major rivers, 20 miles of hiking trails, 600-year-old fir and spruce trees, and you might spot pygmy shrews, wood frogs, and wolverines. 

9.  The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness is nestled within the Everglades National Park in Florida. It covers 1,296,500 of the park’s total 1.4 million acres. The tall grasses of the marshland house flamingoes, alligators, and more. Take a boat excursion to popular Florida Bay and see not only nesting sites but also sea turtles, bottle-nosed dolphins, and sharks too.

10.  The Pelican Island Wilderness

The Pelican Island Wilderness in the Indian River’s wide lagoon in Florida’s Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge covers only 5.5 acres. Thus, it is actually the “smallest designated wilderness” in the US. It is home to a total of 15 officially “threatened and endangered species.” Various wading birds dine on the many natural fish here. Brown pelicans, oystercatchers, and great blue herons nest even here.

11.  The J.N. “Ding” Darling Wilderness

Located in the northern section of the 6,400-acre J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Florida, this group of mangrove islands spans 2,619 acres. The refuge began as a refuge for river otters, alligators, and a number of different migratory birds. Here you can go fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and even motorboating in specific areas.

12.  The Okefenokee Wilderness

Spread out over 353,981 acres of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia, this remote wilderness area is a peaceful place. Camp here on a wooden platform amidst the moss-draped cypress and wet prairie. Hear the calls of the ibis and herons. Be sure to check out the famous Okefenokee Swamp too. It’s one of the country’s best-preserved and oldest freshwater areas. 

13.  The Hawaii Volcanoes Wilderness

While in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on Hawaii’s Big Island, be sure to explore the designated wilderness. It’s divided into four separate sections. Mauna Loa is located in the northwestern section. In the southwest, you’ll find miles of coastline worth exploring too. There’s a total of 123,100 acres here including almost 150 miles of hiking trails. Try the Ka’aha Trail.

14.  The Bitterroot Mountain Wilderness

The beautiful 1,347,644-acre Bitterroot Mountain Wilderness in Bitterroot National Forest straddles both Montana and Idaho. There are 1,092,854 acres In Idaho and 254,790 acres in Montana. You’ll see the rugged ridges and rough granite peaks, the deep canyons, and forest. Hike some of the 1,800 miles of hiking trails and look for Selway elk.

15.  The Isle Royale Wilderness

The Isle Royale Wilderness covers 99 percent of Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park. It spans an area of 132,018 acres. It holds multiple honors including the continent’s “largest freshwater lake”, “the largest island”, and the state’s “largest wilderness area.” It features a shoreline forest, 36 campgrounds, more than 100 ponds, and lakes, and 170 miles of hiking trails.

16.  The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

Travel to the stunning Superior National Forest in Minnesota. Here you can explore the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Explore the 816,244 acres of beaches, rugged crags, and rocky shores. 17.  The Bob Marshall Wilderness

The Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana’s Flathead National Forest is the oldest and perhaps the most popular of three wildernesses that make up the entire Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. The other two are The Scapegoat and The Great Bear Wilderness. Designated in 1964, it is the largest of the trio encompassing an area of 1,062,694 acres.

18.  The Arc Dome Wilderness

Situated in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada, the well-known Arc Dome Wilderness is specifically found in the Toiyabe Range’s southern area. Explore 120,551 acres of the range’s highest summits and visit the Arc Dome which stands 11,775 feet tall. Take the Cow Canyon Trail. It follows the Reese River which is great for trout fishing.

19.  The Sandwich Range Wilderness

This wilderness in the White Mountains of New Hampshire is special. It is one of the few wilderness areas in the entire northeastern US. It is 35,301 acres of high mountain passes, long ridgelines, rugged valleys, shining pools, and bubbling streams. Visit the southeastern section of the White Mountains and hike part of the 57 miles of historic hiking trails.

20.  The Ah-shi-sle-pah Wilderness

New Mexico’s badland area, the Ah-shi-sle-pah Wilderness, is quite distinct despite it only covering 7,242 acres. It is an interesting, otherworldly landscape that features barren, wide valleys, gray-white clay hills, and yellow-orange fairy chimneys or “hoodoos.” There’s very little vegetation here so you may discover various unique fossils and geological formations.

21.  The Three Sisters Wilderness

Visitors to the Willamette National Forest and Deschutes National Forest in Oregon can visit these 283,818 acres of wilderness. It’s the second-largest wilderness in the state. Highlights here are South Sister, Middle Sister, and North Sister. Their individual heights are between approximately 10,085 and 10,358 feet. See the alpine meadows, forests, lava fields, and 260 miles of hiking trails here.

22.  The Badlands Wilderness

If you’re headed to the famous Badlands National Park in South Dakota, be sure to stop to see some of the 64,144-acre Badlands Wilderness. It’s more than 38 million years old and began as little more than a marshy jungle that was home to now-extinct saber-toothed cats. Weather conditions eventually transformed the place into a mixed-grassland complete with gorges, cliffs, and canyons.

23.  The Citico Creek Wilderness

The Citico Creek Wilderness in the Cherokee National Forest is the largest in the state of Tennessee. In the 1920s it was heavily impacted by tree logging, yet today there still remains a number of strands of virgin forest amidst its 16,213 acres. Be sure to take the popular designated Cherohala Skyway which will give you access to the 70-foot high Falls Branch Falls.  

24.  The Guadalupe Mountains Wilderness

More than half of Texas’ Guadalupe Mountains National Park is designated wilderness and is home to the most exposed and extensive fossil reef on the planet as well. The highest point here is the well-known Guadalupe Peak which stands 8,749 feet high. Hike the 8.4-mile, round-trip Guadalupe Peak Trail to explore it up close. 

25.  The Turkey Hill Wilderness

Eastern Texas’ Turkey Hill Wilderness in Angelina National Forest may have a few noticeably steep slopes among its 5,536 acres, but it is generally accessible to everyone. Oddly, regardless of its name, this area is more of a home to snakes and deer than turkeys. The biggest attraction is iconic Turkey Hill which is approximately 298 feet above sea level.   

26.  The Desolation Canyon Wilderness

The distinctive Desolation Canyon is a great place to be for those into prehistoric cultures and geology. It spreads out over an area of 142,996 acres. It includes quite a number of deep canyons. Rock Creek is reportedly over a mile deep. This is a great place for whitewater rafting. Check out the 84-mile section of the mighty Green River which rushes through both Gray and Desolation canyons. 

27.  The Buckhorn Wilderness

Are you going to the Olympic National Forest in Washington? Be sure to explore at least part of the 44,270 acres of the Buckhorn Wilderness in the forest’s northeastern corner. The northern section of the area features forested lowlands and mountains. The larger southern portion has alpine meadows and glacier-carved valleys. Take the picturesque Marmot Pass!

28.  The Cranberry Wilderness

Hikers will love this wilderness area in West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest. This 47,742-acre area in Webster and Pocahontas Counties is reported to be “prime hiking territory” for backpackers and hikers who enjoy exploring the deep woods. The valleys are steep, and the wide mountains are between 2,400 and 4,700 feet tall.

29.  The Blackjack Springs Wilderness

The Blackjack Springs Wilderness in Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in northeastern Wisconsin spans an area of 5,912 acres. Close to the Canadian border, it is highlighted by the well-known Whispering Lake which reflects the surrounding forest. Here you can hike trails running along abandoned railroad grades and logging roads that harken back to the early 1900s.

30.  The Washakie Wilderness

This wilderness in Wyoming’s Shoshone National Forest was named in honor of Chief Washakie, a major figure in the Shoshone tribe. It includes 704,274 acres in the Absaroka Mountains and is highlighted by buttes, petrified forests, steplike cliffs, and volcanic-layered valleys. If you hike here, beware of wolves, mountain lions, and bears.

31.  The Frank Church-River Of No Return Wilderness

Last but not least, is this wilderness area in Idaho’s Salmon-Challis National Forest. This 2,358,886-acre area spans six national forests and two official Primitive Areas. Here you can explore the Salmon River Mountains, go jet-boating or rafting on two white-water rivers, go hiking, and horseback riding.
