2.  Tenerife, Spain

We’ve briefly mentioned Tenerife before, of course. Still, this is the most noteworthy of all the Canarian islands, with a surprisingly bustling nightclub scene and beautiful beaches. You will find it right off the coast of the well-known Western Sahara. Explore the popular pirate cave Poris de Candelaria and take a cable car ride to the active volcano there as well.

Situated off the southeastern coast of Sweden, gorgeous Gotland is in the Baltic Sea. It’s admittedly cooler than a Mediterranean island, but don’t let that stop you from visiting. Promoted as a “Viking-era wonder”, the old city of Visby is an official Unesco World Heritage Site and includes a historic medieval wall and many charming homes swathed in florals and vivid colors.

4.  Comino, Malta

Comino may be Malta’s smallest island, but it’s truly worth seeing. It’s composed mainly of limestone and is under 1.6 kilometers wide and less than 2.5 kilometers long. It’s true! The map of the US is all wrong! (Well, OK, not wrong but not all-inclusive. Technically, many basic maps fail to include territories and other islands recognized by the US Geological Survey. Nevertheless, with all the natural and man-made attractions they are home to, these interesting islands are worth a visit.  

The U.S. Virgin Islands

This trio of islands consists of St Croix, St John, and St Thomas and is situated roughly 40 miles east of popular Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.

St Thomas is reportedly a popular cruise ship stop and home to such historic buildings as the famous 17th-century Blackbeard’s Castle, which was once home to the legendary pirate. St. Croix is well-known for its peaceful atmosphere. It is also popular for its protected coral reefs which are perfect for those into scuba diving and snorkeling.

The Northern Mariana Islands

The historic Northern Mariana archipelago is located in the North Pacific Ocean. It includes 22 individual islands and islets. During WWII the US and Japanese forces fought over this territory.  

In 1947, these islands came under American ownership. The largest of these islands is Saipan. It is 44.6 square miles in total.  

Here you will discover pretty palm tree-lined beaches, impressive, mountainous landscapes, and fascinating historical sites. You will not find a lot of American tourists here due to the location of these islands but you will see a lot of Asian tourists,

American Samoa

American Samoa is approximately halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii. It offers a unique blend of raw rainforests, volcanic landscapes, and turquoise waters. In the late 1800s, the US set up a naval base in the Pago Pago Harbor, this awesome archipelago was officially made a US territory in 1900.

While there is an American influence here, the Samoan culture is preserved here and 90 percent of the indigenous population speak Samoan. This Polynesian paradise features five inhabited islands. They are Tutuila, Ta‘ū, Olosega, Ofu, Aunu’u. There are also two coral atolls.

Palmyra Atoll

The ring-shaped archipelago known as Palmyra Atoll consists of approximately 50 currently uninhabited islets located in the Pacific Ocean. The combined size of these islets is nearly four square miles. If you decide to check out this archipelago, be sure to get the official approval of the USFWS (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

If you prefer some torrid tales tossed in with your tropical paradise, this is the place to be. Indeed, various sources confirm that several shocking unusual incidents have occurred here that some actually believe that Palmyra Atoll is cursed.

Baker Island

If you think good things come in small packages, this is the isle for you. Baker Island is less than one square mile in total. Nevertheless, this little, reef-fringed, uninhabited, atoll is incredible.

Located halfway between Hawaii and Australia, it is home to a surprising amount of wildlife. So much so, it is an official US National Wildlife Refuge This habitat is visited by at least a dozen species of shorebirds seabirds. Endangered sea turtles reside here too. In 2000 it was deigned part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument as well.

Howland Island

Much like the previously-mentioned Baker Island, you won’t find a lot of tourists here on nearby Howland Island either. Still, if you are intrigued enough to want to see this place you need to get approval from the USFWS (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Of course, the reason why the two islands came under US ownership is not at all glamorous. In two words: “Seabird droppings.” During the 1840s, US farmers found out that seabird droppings was actually fantastic fertilizer.  

Thus, in 1857 the powers that be enacted the Guano Act. It remains in place to this day. The USA has the legal right to actually claim and “mine” any unclaimed islands for it.

Jarvis Island

This island also came under the possession of the USA in 1856 thanks to the Guano Act. The next two decades garnered an estimated 8,000 tons of seabird droppings. Mining was discontinued sometime in 1878, and the isle was abandoned.  To this day, an abandoned town remains there. It is a rather haunting reminder of its forgotten history.

Kingman Reef

Kingman Reef. Midway Atoll and Wake Atoll are the only other remaining landmasses in the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument  Kingman Reef is home to some o the world’s oldest coral.  The gold coral colonies here are up to 5,000 years old.  This reef supports a lot of marine life including fish, blacktip sharks, and endangered giant clams.

Navassa Island

Little Navassa Island is situated between Jamaica and Haiti. It spans an area of only three square miles. Still, experts insist it is a natural ‘haven for endangered coral.”

A group of scientists presently on the Global Reef Expedition discovered that there is an unexpectedly “rich ecosystem” here that has somehow managed to stave off any damage from climate change, overfishing, and pollution that have apparently impacted other coral reefs in the area. This was yet another island legally claimed by the USA in 1857 under the earlier mentioned Guano Act.

Guam

Last, but certainly not least on our list is Guam. Guam is approximately 5,800 miles west of San Francisco, California, in the North Pacific Ocean. While that is arguably remote, it certainly offers visitors everything needed for a vacation of beautiful beach bliss.

Here one will discover white-sand beaches, untainted coral reefs, and clear, azure water. Need some space on your island paradise? Guam is reportedly the biggest island in Micronesia. It has an area of 217 square miles.  

The population here is approximately 167,000 and consists of the indigenous Chamorro people, Some of the locals are also of European, Filipino, Mexican, and Spanish descent. This has resulted in an interesting mix of cultural influences and traditions.

Lofoten Islands, Norway

The Andaman Islands

The Andaman Islands are located about 620 miles from the beautiful Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean.  These islands and the nearby Nicobar Islands make up a rather isolated group of almost 575 individual islands.  At present, only 38 are inhabited.

Visit Governor’s Beach

Those in the know say that Governor’s Beach is the finest beach on all of Grand Turk.  This stretch of sand is  generally calm and peaceful because the trade winds don’t quite make it to this area of the island.  It is named for the nearby mansion.  During the high season, it is a frequently-visited area thanks to the ships that dock in the harbor of quaint Cockburn Town.  Oddly, the beach itself is never really crowded.  Additionally, the beach itself is backdropped by groves of casuarinas and pines that add a touch of privacy.

Learn Something At The Turks & Caicos National Museum

The Turks & Caicos National Museum is tucked away behind a series of red-tiled roofs and whitewashed terraces.  It is one of the top draws in the capital of the archipelago, Cockburn Town.  The building that holds the museum is called Guinep House. (The name is derived from the almost 200-year-old fruit tree out front.)  Here you can study the historic reconstructed archaeological remains of the oldest shipwreck in all the Americas, the famous Molasses Reef Wreck.  There are also exhibits on the native Lucayan people and islander culture.

Tour Old Cheshire Hall

The lichen-dotted, sprawling ruins of old Cheshire Hall hold a real sense of history.  There amidst the pine trees and cacti deep within the center of popular  Providenciales, you will learn of the European slave owners who came to this place to create the plantation boom back in the 1700s.  Cheshire Hall once encompassed over 5,000 acres.  Today you can still see the old cotton presses, the dilapidated great hall, and the old slave quarters all made mainly from the local limestone.  It’s also an interesting spot for birdwatching.

Explore The Conch Bar Caves

The well-known Conch Bar Caves are actually carved out of the beds of limestone rock and karst hills of the Middle Caicos island.  There you will discover a veritable stunning subterranean labyrinth of underground chambers and tunnels.  Some of the tunnels are naturally lit by shafts of light that make their way down from the surface.  Others are chock full of big boulders or large stalactites.  You might see chambers that feature graffiti listing the names and dates of some of the earliest visitors or even the remains of early Lucayan tribesmen.

Most islands are safe as a vacation destination or even a home. However, there are some islands that are not even safe to even go near whether it be because of the residents or a natural occurrence. To help you steer clear of danger, here are the top 10 most dangerous islands on the planet.

1. North Sentinel Island, Andaman Islands

North Sentinel Island is the home of the Sentinelese tribe. This tribe’s only weapons are spears and bows and arrows. The government of India, which controls the island, has deemed them the fiercest group of people on the planet.

Sea travel within five nautical miles is prohibited. The Indian government has also banned anyone from ever going within 3 miles (4.83 kilometers) of its shores. Following a 2000 tsunami, the authorities attempted an emergency food drop, but the mission was aborted after the helicopter was attacked.

2. Ilha de Queimada Grande Island, Brazil

Indiana Jones would not like this place. The island of Ilha de Queimada Grande is also known as Snake Island for a reason. Located off the coast of Brazil, this small isle is only 43 hectares (106+ acres).

Experts estimate that there are approximately five golden lancehead viper snakes per square foot of the island. Lancehead snakes are reported to be responsible for more deaths than any other snake in both North and South America. To date, there’s no known antivenom so avoiding this place is a good idea.

3.Papua, New Guinea

New Guinea is really a nice place to visit, but you sure wouldn’t want to be in Papua. Until 1974 the natives didn’t even know that people from other places weren’t members of rival tribes. These people live their lives in treehouses constructed roughly 140 feet high to avoid being attacked. Those who stumble into their territory are generally met with a rather long barbed arrow pointed at them until they turn themselves around and walk in the other direction. This tribe has a history of cannibalism and may still eat invaders.

4. Gruinard Island, United Kingdom

People are no longer banned from Gruinard Island, but they still stay away from the place. Brit scientists were researching anthrax there in 1942. In the process, they transported 50 sheep to this remote isle off the Scottish mainland.

The sheep were bombed with anthrax. They all died within two weeks. It was not until afterwards that the scientists soon realized they could not remove the anthrax from the soil there. Thus, they put a 50-year ban on the isle. Three Russian aristocrats recently expressed an interest in purchasing it.

5. Saba Island, Netherlands

Saba Island is situated only 20 miles away from St. Martin. Despite that proximity, Saba Island has been trashed by more storms in the past 150 years than any other location on the planet. The statisticians confirm that this place has been hit by no less than seven category five hurricanes and an additional 10 category three hurricanes.

Despite that, the residents of Saba Island continue to welcome travelers to their island. Just be sure to avoid visiting during hurricane season. (Oh! Did we mention place also has one of the world’s most dangerous airports?)

6. Izu Islands, Japan

On the Izu Islands, the ever-present poisonous gases in the air are so strong that residents must carry gas masks with them. The moment the deadly gases rise to a dangerous level a special siren sounds to let everyone know they must immediately put on their gas masks. Scientists are not 100 percent certain but they believe these poisonous gases seep up through the earth and originate from a volcano beneath the island. The residents were evacuated in 2000 and all flights to this destination were canceled for over eight years.

7. Bjornoya, Svalbard, Norway

This would be a hard place to grow enough food to sustain oneself because the land is too rocky. This is a difficult place to even moor a boat due to all the huge cliffs along the coastline. But what makes it dangerous is that a Soviet nuclear submarine sank roughly 100 nautical miles southwest of this spot in 1989 and leaked radioactive material into the water. This may have damaged the island’s soil too. Additionally, experts think that the development of the Snøhvit gas field has also forever altered the climate.

8. Farallon Islands, USA

Some sources claim the USA buried approximately 47,500 55-gallon drums full of nuclear waste on the Farallon Islands not far from San Francisco , California. Government sources state the specific location of all the barrels is unknown but reports that a number of them were buried underwater around the islands. Scientists believe that finding and removing all of these barrels would actually do more damage than leaving them in the ground. What’s worse is that a US Naval ship that could have been radioactive was also buried close to these islands.

9. Bouvet Island, Norway

Bouvet Island is located 1,1000 miles north of Antarctica. It’s the world’s most remote island. More than 93 percent of this 119-square-mile isle is always covered by a glacier.

Only six people live here and they work for the Norwegian Weather Service. They work there for two to four months at a time. In an emergency, help would be slow in arriving as there’s only one reliable place to moor a boat.

The Mergui Archipelago is made up of 800 small islands.
It’s situated between Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand. The islands are largely uninhabited.
