What is the Dutch Caribbean island in question? It’s Curacao of course! This multicolored island in the shining Caribbean is 64 kilometers long and 1.3 miles wide.

Perhaps more interesting, is that this isle is an eclectic blend of culture, design, and history that is rich with beautiful beaches, green and blue spirits, tropical wildlife, and inexplicably brightly-painted old school European buildings. Curacao: A Unique Dutch Caribbean island

This isn’t a typical Caribbean island

The only floating bridge in the world

The city of Willemstad is actually quite easy to explore on foot. Stroll the cobbled alleys and lanes lined with art galleries, eateries, shops, and pretty gabled homes which were once all painted plain, bright white.  

Local legend says that…

Travel back through the mists of time to the year 1817. It was then that the governor of the isle found himself suffering from migraines from the sun shining off all of the white-painted homes. He decided he would solve his problem by ordering the residents to paint all their homes bright colors that would combat the all-too-constant glare.

Ah, but there’s more to the story! It turns out that the governor also owned a paint factory located on this island. Some sources claim that might have slightly influenced his decision.

Regardless, it stuck

Painting the buildings in various colors continued. It actually became a tradition. It went on for centuries and continues to this very day. Some travel pundits pose that the painting presents a visual representation of the island’s vibrant culture.

Famous Handelskade Street

This is reported to be one of Willemstad’s most famous streets. The row houses that line this particular street will undoubtedly make you think of the city of Amsterdam, except they are as bright and colorful as candy.

Popular Los Barquitos Floating Market

Approximately every other week, sailors from Venezuela travel to this island to create an actual “floating market” along the well-known Waaigat Harbor in Willemstad. This is a tradition that is over a century old. The boats dock at numerous mainland stalls that are shade by multi-colored tarps. Here they sell fresh seafood and fruit.

This happening district is often called “the ‘SoHo’ of Curaçao.” This is the part of the island nation that is overflowing with cool shops, cozy cafes, hip bars, top-rated restaurants, and other elements of nightlife, all neatly nestled in colored buildings.

An artistic culture

The oldest operating synagogue

The Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue is an architectural jewel and approximately 300 years old. Perhaps most interesting is its sand floor. It’s a subtle tribute to the original Jewish settlers who used sand to muffle their footsteps during the infamous Spanish Inquisition.

The historic Rif Fort

Today the structure features bars, restaurants, shops, and a memorable view, back when it was built–in 1828– it was meant to keep the capital safe from perilous pirates and other assorted enemies. It would also go on to be a brothel, a prison, and a police station.

See the Great Mosque of Cordoba, Spain

While talk of Andalusia, Spain, usually brings to mind the regal Real Alcazar found in Seville or the fairy-tale-reminiscent Alhambra palace situated in Granada, there’s an often-overlooked monument that’s also incredible.  It’s called the Great Mosque of Cordoba.

It’s totally different from the Real Alcazar or the Alhambra.  Indeed, it’s different than any other building on the planet.  Known to the locals as the Mezquita, it spans the space of over four football fields with a roof held up by several double arches supported by more than 850 Roman columns shaped from various precious stones.

Take in the Ancient Paleolithic Cave Art in France and Spain

Southern France and Northern Spain reportedly have the world’s highest concentration of Paleolithic cave art.  Almost 400 caves in Europe feature art from this particular period.  350 or more are found in these two places.

At last report, only a few of them can be visited.  The caves located in France are spread out a bit more than those in Spain but many of them are found in the Dordogne not far from Sarlat,  However, in Spain, you can easily reach at least a dozen of them from Santander.  They are all official UNESCO World Heritage sites and contain art that was created between 11,000 to 40,000+ years ago.

Hike to the San Fruttuoso Abbey in Liguria, Italy

The noteworthy San Fruttuoso abbey is ensconced in the popular Portofino National Park in the Liguria region of Italy.  The closest city is Genoa.  More specifically, it’s nestled in a cove about halfway along a peninsula.  It can only be reached on foot or by boat.

Live Amongst Leopards in the Village of Bera, India

This interesting Indian village located in the state of Rajasthan is home to people who actually co-exist with a fierce feline predator – the leopard.  Often overlooked by tourists heading for Jodhpur and Udaipur, Bera is the world’s best place to see a leopard.  They roam freely here as the resident Rabari tribe goes about their daily lives as if it was nothing.

It’s tied into their religion.  Believe it or not, there has not been one leopard attack here in over 100 years.  More than 60 wild leopards consider this little pastoral pace their home.

You have more than a 90 percent chance of (ahem) spotting a leopard here.  Those are better odds than anywhere else on the planet.  Look for crocodiles and birds at Jawai Dam.

Visit the Largest Erosion Creator on the Planet in the Israeli Desert

The famous Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is an astonishing natural light show near the Arctic Circle. It’s a phenomenal natural light show born of the unique union of charged atmospheric and gaseous particles. The best time to take in these distinctive dancing lights is on any dark, clear night during the winter, fall, or even early spring.

While visibility is dependent on various weather conditions, location is key. The farther north you can go, the better the view. There are many lovely locations to actually experience this exceptional attraction. Here then, without further ado, are the world’s best places to see the Northern Lights.

1. Fairbanks, Alaska, USA

The city of Fairbanks is found in the well-known auroral oval, a circular region around the North Pole. Visit here from August to May when the lights are most often visible. If you’re a night owl, that’s even better because the lights become more intense between the hours of 10:00 pm and 2:00 am.  

No matter where you stay, keep in mind the lights are sometimes unpredictable. Even experts admit you might have to look for them for a while. Norway

Tromso is in the northern part of the country above the Arctic Circle. Like the previously-mentioned city of Fairbanks, it too is found within the auroral ring. The best time to visit Tromso is reportedly between October and mid-March. If you touchdown in January, you can even attend the yearly Northern Lights Festival, when both the locals and visitors participate in special outdoor events, live music, and other enjoyable activities.  

Rent the renovated oceanfront barn named Fjosen. This apartment/condo comes complete with three bedrooms and features floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to look out over Ersfjordbotn, a.k.a. the “northern lights fjord,” and the nearby mountains too.

COLMAR

THE CAMARGUE

UNESCO’s heritage and reserve located near the Mediterranean. The Camargue is a vast area of wetlands ideal for catching sunsets and for those who love nature being their escape. Spring and Autumn are the best time to visit, as hundreds of thousands of birds migrate at this time of the year. And spectators from all over the world came to visit to admire its rich wildlife. The ornithological park of Camargue is beyond measure as it is home of varieties of waterfowl, including white egrets and herons. Catching up with the pink flamingo with your lover can be a sweet experience also.

GIVERNY

It is a village in the region of Normandy in northern France where the impressionist painter Claude Monet lived and worked here from 1883 until his death in 1926. There are two parts in Monet’s garden namely: Japanese inspired water garden on the other side of the road and a flower garden called Clos Normand in front of his house.

Taking a stroll over the splendid Japanese inspired bridge, you will immensely get drawn in his work of art. Monet restored this old bridge and construct and designed it together with a local craftsman.

The other area is a bloom filled garden which is truly breathtaking and divided into multiple arrays of flowerbeds. Fruit trees, other ornamental trees and Monet’s mixture of daisies and poppies and pleasing to the eyes. The central valley is filled with climbing roses with its different varieties.

With the abundance of nature and Monet’s dedication to his garden, he did not like to organize his garden. Instead, he just let the flowers bloom and left them with its beautiful glow.

MONTH SAINT-MICHEL

It is a tidal island which is also located in Normandy France, this offers a huge variety of natural environment. With amazing vegetation, the salt marsh will keep you awe, filled regularly by the sea. The height of the tides is spectacular and the changing characteristics of the landscape as well as the light.

You can cast an adventure in its salty bay by doing horseback riding. Also, if you are a sailing fan, you can wish your luck and probably see a bottlenose dolphin along your way.

The best time to visit during the day is early in the morning right before tons of tourists arrive on the island. Getting crowded around 9:30 a.m. so better plan an itinerary in going there. 1 . Alaska and The California Coast

Drive from Anchorage, Alaska to Seward and you will see some of the most beautiful mountains in the entire country. Furthermore, the countryside is full on animal life and eventually, you’ll see some great beaches too. It take approximately two and a half hours to drive this route.

Another drive that tied with the above route is driving north through the state of California. Highway 101 is not only famous but is a popular, iconic drive. It’s another motion picture ride.
