Barring any reak winter storms, Texas truly is a great place to visit. Those in the know say there are many “amazing destinations” worth seeing. 1.Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park is perhaps the state’s most popular national park. It can be found on the border of Mexico and the western section of the state. The park is most famously the home of the Chisos mountain range.

Experience the phenomenal stargazing, Go camping, hiking, or rating through the Santa Elena Canyon. You can even take a relaxing dip in the popular Langford Hot Springs.

2.  Galveston

4.  The Enchanted Rock State Park

It was also once the home of such indigenous people as the Lipan Apache. Apache legend has stories of the ghost fires seen there. They also tell tales of local hauntings by the ghost of an Indigenous woman who threw herself off the Enchanted Rock after her tribe was slaughtered by an enemy tribe.

5.  Caddo Lake State Park

Here you will discover Spanish moss hanging on numerous giant cypress trees that are reflected on the calm bayou waters. The park’s memorable maze of myriad ponds and bayous and ponds draws individuals from across the world to camp, fish, hike, and paddle. The resident alligators reportedly add to the overall atmosphere of this distinct destination. 

6.  The Hill Country

14.  Los Ebanos Ferry Crossing

25,  The Hueco Tanks Historic Site

Last but not necessarily least, we have Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Park. Here you will be able to enjoy a number of different activities. Go for a hike here and explore the park’s noteworthy rock hills. 

The park also includes a lot of petroglyphs and pictographs that are surprisingly popular. You can also take guided or self-guided tours here. At press time, only a total of 70 tourists are permitted to visit the North Mountain section daily so plan on getting your permit as soon as possible.

1.  Buda

Drive 15 miles south of Austin towards San Antonio and you’ll find the town of Buda, (pronounced BYOO-dah).  Their motto is “breathe easy here” and you truly can.  Shopaholics will reportedly find antique shops offering rare collectibles at “old-timey prices.”  

There’s also Cabela’s on Highway I-35, which is big enough it has a whole street named after it.  Veteran visitors say you should not underestimate this place based on its relatively small size either.  It has its own voice and culture.  Here you’ll find delectable salsa, karaoke, an “old-school” arcade, a soda fountain, and more within the town’s six square miles.

2.  Lockhart

The small town of Lockhart is about 25 minutes southeast of the busy Austin airport or half an hour east of the city itself.  Lockhart is well-known for its barbecue.  Two family-owned restaurants that were once united now vie to provide visitors with famous “good smoke” as they say in Texas.

Lockhart, the “little city with a big heart,” still shows its cowboy roots revealing a unique perspective on Texas.  Stop by the old Jail Museum and see the Norman castellated architecture which was popular back in the mid-1800s.  Other highlights include the Lockhart State Park Golf Course, Barton Springs, Bull Creek, and Lady Bird Lake.

3.  Go Tubing On The River

If you hit Austin in the summer, the most popular pastime is tubing.  It’s relaxing to float down a river in an inflated tube with your favorite cold drink in hand.  In fact, the locals recommend tubing down three rivers that are all less than 40 minutes out of the city.  There’s the San Marcos River, situated in the town of San Marcos between Austin and San Antonio, the short Comal River, located in New Braunfels south of San Marcos; and the Guadalupe River.  Tie your tubes together.  Some tubers rent an extra tube for the ice chest although you’ll need to bring your own beverages.  

4.  Krause Springs

Krause Springs is 35 miles west of the city.  This lesser-known but popular park features a forested campsite, hiking trails, a small waterfall, a watering hole, and 32 natural springs.  It’s a great place for an outdoor weekend getaway or just a day trip.  All you need is a picnic lunch, some towels, and maybe a bit of sunscreen.  In between dips into this refreshing spring  you can sun yourself on one of the huge rocks that face the popular watering hole.

5.  Jacob’s Well

The Jacob’s Well Natural Area is located roughly 35 miles southeast of the city.  Here you will discover an attractive artesian spring that has a year-round temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit.  Swimming is permitted from May 1st through October 1st.

There are two other great places to cool off: Hamilton Pool and Blue Hole.  Reservations are required for water play at all three places.  There are also public hiking trails that are free to use.  The underwater caves are potentially dangerous and therefore they’re reportedly “only accessible to licensed professionals.”

6.  Enchanted Rock

Head west out of Austin for about 95 miles and you can marvel at the monolith known as Enchanted Rock.  This icon is a large mound of natural pink granite.  It has quite a distinctive shape.  Additionally, there are a number of different ways to enjoy this area.  Go on a nature walk, relax and commune with nature, or go hiking.  Indeed, veteran visitors say this is a great place to hike in the fall.

Antiques, Drinks, and Local Color

7.  Fredericksburg

Drive about 80 miles west of the city to the very heart of Central Texas wine country.  Here you will find the city of Fredericksburg.  If you’re a big wine lover and you’d rather not drive out there yourself you can always sign on with one of the local wineries that offer a pick-up service in Austin.  

The locals confirm that this area is especially beautiful in the spring.  See the beautiful wildflowers amidst the verdant landscape.  If you’re not big on wine, fret not.  Central Texas is also home to distilleries and breweries.  In fact, drive south of Austin and you’ll discover the popular Deep Eddy Vodka Tasting Room.

8.  Round Top

Roughly an hour’s drive east of Austin is the tiny town of Round Top.  Texas Monthly calls this place the “Texas version of Aspen.”  Here in this quirky, quaint spot, you will find all the collectibles you could ever want.  

If you’re big on antiquing, this intriguing locale becomes a veritable antiquing heaven a few special times each year with its popular Round Top Antiques Show.  The event lasts for almost a week and draws buyers, sellers, and other interested parties from across the nation.  If you miss the show then be sure to at least stop to check out what some travel writers call the shop “equivalent of the coolest grandparents’ attic”, Uncommon Objects located in south Austin.

An Artsy Desert Experience

9.  Marfa

Marfa is a little West Texas desert town situated a good six hours out of the city.  It was founded in the 1880s as a railroad water stop.  Decades later, in the early 1970s, it began to attract artists and other creative types.

While Texas has a legal speed limit of 85 miles per hour, you’ll probably still want to at least spend the night here.  Veteran visitors suggest staying at the well-known boho glamping hotel known as El Cosmico, where you’ll probably sleep in a fancy tent or even a remodeled RV camper.  Stop at the hybrid laundromat-coffee shop, the fun Frama Coffee at Tumbleweed Laundry.  Then gaze at the stars at the McDonald Observatory.  Finally, don’t forget to see the famous fake Prada shoe store and art installation either.

It’s a ride that lasts over two days and perfect for tracing the trail that early pioneers traveled when they settled the Old West. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Here in Bryson City, North Carolina, you’ll have two choices in train treks through the Great Smoky Mountains. One trip is 32 miles long. The other is 44. The former, known as the Tuckasegee River Excursion, will take you through valleys and across historic bridges into the town of Dillsboro for a 1.5-hour stop. The latter is the Nantahala Gorge Excursion featuring the Nantahala and Tennessee Rivers, Fontana Lake, and the gorge.

Kings Canyon National Park, California

Home to one of the largest canyons in the country, this remote area can only be reached via Highway 180. You’ll enjoy 50 miles of beautiful scenery as you travel into California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains’ foothills and Sequoia groves. 2,700 feet below you will find Kings River, geologic formations, meadows, waterfalls, and a lot of wildlife.

Here, 26 miles from the behebe Crater, you can see the soon-to-be-famous sailing stones. They are essentially boulders that shift with the weather and permanently impact the ancient, arid lake bed.

The road there is rugged enough that you will need a high-clearance vehicle. Drive a mile beyond the trailhead and park. Hike to the base of the mountain if you wish to see a majority of these boulders.

A hidden canyon complete with a fish-filled river

Gunnison National Park, Colorado

This stark hidden canyon, found in one of the least-visited parks in the .S., is the most intimidating and imposing you might ever see. At the bottom, you’ll find the Gunnison River.

It’s a quiet place to camp and to fish for salmon and trout. It’s a great place for photographers too since the high walls block the sometimes pesky Rocky Mountain winds. You can hike in or take the East Portal Road via the South Rim.

Historic, hidden campsites

Everglades National Park, Florida

The well-known Everglades National Park spans 1.5 million acres and includes both saltwater and freshwater ecosystems. Hire a nautical guide and travel deep inside the drifting mangrove trees. There you’ll discover a few little known but still historical “chickee” campsites.

Accessible only via boat, they are raised wooden covered docks that for hundreds of years were used as courier stops. Camp there and take in the sights and sounds of the life within the trees, water, and even the air.

Huge natural, stone “cannonballs”

Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

The Cannonball Concretions appear to be gigantic cannonballs. They are composed of clay, shale, sandstone, and various mineral compounds. Their numbers multiply as they are unearthed by erosion which wears away their natural protective shields.

They can be found right off the paved road in the less-visited north district. Set up camp in the highly praised Juniper Campground. Then cross the park’s road to check out the cannonballs.

Fragile rock formations not noted in any guidebook

Canyonlands National Park, Utah

In an obvious effort to mitigate any potential damage. This spot is not included in any of the park literature. Travel writers sometimes hesitate to mention it because they don’t wish to expose it to over-visitation.

The fragile formations at the overlook have been damaged by careless people in the past. Only cairns guide the way. You will find no traditional signs or markers. Yet the hike will provide noteworthy views of the Canyonlands.

North Cascades National Park, Washington

Just a couple of hours out of Seattle, overlooking the sub-alpine wilderness there is a 700-foot ridgeline. Head for the Thornton Lakes region of the park. Take the five-mile Thornton Lakes Trail. You will be hiking through heavy brush, followed by colorful green vegetation to the above-mentioned ridgeline.

You will then hike down and across a number of boulders until you arrive at the reflective lake that mirrors the snow-topped mountains and the evergreen trees. Break the total 10 miles up into 2 days by camping for the night in the wilderness.

A remote beach paradise in the South Pacific

National Park of American Samoa

South of the equator, halfway between New ealand and Hawaii is an island wilderness complete with fruit bats, a tropical rainforest, unbleached coral reefs, and Samoan culture. Three of the islands include federally-protected areas. On one island, Ofu, there’s a four-mile stretch of pristine beach with powdery-white sand.

The coral ecosystems here reportedly thrive due to the remote location and low population. The ocean glitters a welcome to snorkelers and swimmers alike. It might be a bit of a challenge getting there but it’s worth the effort.

San Marcos River San Marcos, TX

The college town of SM is right down the road from Austin. It’s reported to be the hardest partyin’ place in the U.S. When the temperature hits triple digits, the 72-degree San Marcos River is the perfect place to be to kick back and suck down some cold Lone Star.

James River Scottsville, VA

Prior to reaching the drop-off point, a tubing company rep will advise you not to jump off the rock in the middle of James River. It’s private property so technically you’d be trespassing. If you do ignore said advice, however, know the spectators on the riverside beach will witness your fun flaunting of the law.

Possibly the best deal on this entire list, a business at HF rent you two tubes for under $30.00 a day. (That’s one for you and one for the beer cooler as well.) If tubing isn’t enough to float your boat, you can also go mountain biking, whitewater rafting, and zip-lining too.

Yampa River Steamboat Springs, CO

Most tubing routes start upriver of the parking lot so that when you finish tubing and drinking you’re all set to drive home. With this route, you finish in the very middle of Steamboat Springs. There you can shop for souvenirs, eat, or even drink some more if you’re up for it.

Cahaba River Helena, AL

From roughly mid-May to mid-June, this is one of the most picturesque floats in the U.S. thanks in part to the lilies that bloom on the banks and little islands in the river. You know about sucking down brats and cornholing, right? Here’s another tradition. Tie everyone’s tubes together and put the group beer cooler in the center. Bring your plastic beads too as this Mardi Gras-like party involves throwing them and wearing them. The halfway point has a sandbar where you can, eat, play volleyball and, drink some more.

American River Sacramento, CA

This river is 120 miles long and is, at present, a bit too shallow for most boats, The good news is that it’s perfect for kayaking and tubing. Enjoy these reportedly peaceful waters free of boating crowds and be happy you are only visiting California (and don’t have to pay to actually live here.)

Ichetucknee River Fort White, FL

You’ll find this river in the popular Ichetucknee Springs State Park. Float and drink for an hour and a half in the 72-degree water beneath a canopy of shady oak trees. If you want more fun, then climb one of the oak trees and jump in. The swim back to the bank is easy.

Someone once joked that Florida has as many cool places for tubing and drinking as it does people busted for Medicare fraud. This is certainly the most scenic route and the water is so clear you can see to the very bottom of this sub-tropical spring. Enjoy a two-hour float and take advantage of the local park’s tram service to the launch site.
