Are you into spelunking? Are you at all curious about exploring caves? If you’re headed in the direction of the US state of Arizona, have we got the place for you.  In fact, we have several places to check out some cool caves complete with unique formations and a multitude of miscellaneous minerals too. Get ready to take notes, readers, because here are the 15 best caves to explore in Arizona.

15 Best Caves to Explore in Arizona

1. Kartchner Caverns State Park

This state park is located outside of Benson. This cave system was discovered by cave enthusiasts Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts in 1974. The limestone Kartchner Caverns are highlighted by the longest stalactite structure in the world, developing stalagmites, unique minerals, a large bat population, and numerous nooks and cavernous crannies to see.

Be the Gilligan of the spelunking set, and be sure to book and take the “three-hour tour.” You can visit even on the hottest day in summer because these caves are kept at a comfy 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Here you can see the different travertine rock formations up close and gain a truer understanding of the time required to form the fragile towers and spindles and geology in general. You can also go camping, go hiking, do some wildlife viewing, and rent a cabin if you don’t like tents. Visit the Discovery Center too. The entrance fee here is $7.00 per vehicle.

Soldier Pass Cave

Hikers who are cave-curious will enjoy the easily accessible Soldiers Pass Cave Spur Trail just three miles from downtown Sedona. It’s a less-than-three-mile out-and-back hiking trail often rife with pretty wildflowers, is family-friendly, and fine for hikers of all skill levels. The most popular activities here are hiking and wildlife viewing.  

This cave not only provides summer visitors with cool shade from the Arizona heat but also allows them to enjoy watching the interior colors change as the sun changes position. The gated lot at Soldier Pass Trailhead No. 66 only has a dozen or so parking spots so get there early. Otherwise, you will end up parking on the street and adding almost another mile to your hike.

Check the signs too because you are not allowed to just park anywhere on the street. The trailhead has set hours. It’s open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Interested in taking in the sunrise or sunset? Then park on the street.

The Birthing Cave

While you’re in Sedona, check out the Birthing Cave too. There’s an easy, flat, wide, two-mile out-and-back hiking trail to this shallow cave nestled on the side of a small cliff. It has a large diamond-shaped opening overlooking the city’s red rocks.

Oddly, while this cave is supposedly quite popular and the cave can be busy with other hikers, the trail itself is rather uncrowded and peaceful, all things considered. Veteran visitors suggest parking off the road at the Long Canyon Trailhead and starting your hike there. Unlike the parking lots at Devil’s Bridge or Cathedral Rock, the parking lot at the trailhead is surprisingly small.  

Be sure to watch for an obvious hollow in the face of the rock. That’s where you will discover the Birthing Cave. If you like wildflowers, visit between early March through May. Otherwise, the temperatures can be just as nice during September and October. The cave faces east so try to see the sunrise there.

The Subway Cave

The Boynton Canyon Trail will lead you to the once-hidden gem known as Subway Cave in Sedona. While this secret cave is no longer so secret, much of the trail and even the cave itself are still unmarked and easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. If the parking lot at the Boynton Canyon Trailhead is full, park a short distance away on Boynton Pass Road. Keep track of how far you hike because the turnoff that leads to the cave is near the second mile.  

It is not marked and is easy to miss. Veteran visitors can confirm that some locals and even other hikers sometimes throw branches across the turnoff in order to hide it. Ah, but while this trail is sometimes hard to follow and is often overgrown, the cave is incredible inside. Be sure to get a gander at the striking Native American ruins right on the ledge along the left side of the cave too.

Shaman’s Cave also known as Robbers’ Roost

Also known as the Hide Out Cave, you will find this cave just northwest of Sedona. Local legend has it that this cave was once a hideout for assorted bootleggers and bandits. It’s accessible from any of the town’s high vantage points.

In 1932 a movie titled Robbers’ Roost was filmed close to the city. No one has unarguably verified whether or not part of it was shot here at this popular off-the-beaten-path cave. It certainly provides visitors with exceptional panoramic views of the surrounding area and thus would make a great hideaway. The hiking trail to the renowned roost is less than one mile out and back but it is rocky and steep so watch your step if you choose to explore this cave.

Lava River Cave

Travel to Flagstaff to the well-known Coconino National Forest. For it is there you can explore the long lava tube known as the Lava River Cave. It was formed by a large volcanic eruption about 700,000 years ago.

If you want to cool off, the best time to visit is in the summer. The caves are, on average, only 40 degrees Fahrenheit and you might even spot a bit of ice. Even in the summer, you should take thick clothing, because the cave and its connected caverns can actually drop to under 30 degrees.

You’ll have to do your homework before entering though since it is a “self-guided trip.” Another reason to visit in the warmer months is that the roads can be shut down in the winter. In fact, in the winter the more athletic visitors can actually ski into this cave when there’s enough snow. So check on road conditions if you’re interested. Admission is free.

Colossal Cave Mountain Park  

The colossal cave system called Colossal Cave is conveniently situated 22 miles out of Tucson. More specifically, it’s located in a beautiful, 2,400-acre mountain park. It includes some of the area’s best caves.

You can learn about the cave’s interesting geological composition, history, and legends by taking the popular half-mile guided tour. One of the most popular tours takes less than one hour.

Walking down almost 400 steps here will make you seem as if you’re on a journey to the center of the earth. The tours are offered daily and the price charged depends on your choice of tour. The classic cave tour is family-friendly and no extra equipment is required.  

The most challenging is the three-and-a-half-mile tour is the most in-depth and rigorous. Be warned, you will get dirty, trekking through small passageways, pitch-black tunnels, and tight spaces. Schedule your visit at the right time and watch hundreds of bats fly from these caves after sunset. Admission is free.

The Grand Canyon Caverns

You will find this cave in the Peach Springs area unsurprisingly close to the Grand Canyon. Formally discovered in 1927, this now-protected cavern system has limestone walls that are reported to be “geologically identical” to the cliffs of the famous canyon. It is the largest dry cavern in the world.

In order to reach this admittedly eerie cave system, you must ride an elevator 21 floors, between 200 and 300 feet. Upon arrival, you have a choice between four different walking tours of different difficulty levels. An advanced tour will take you deeper into less visited areas of the cavern system and involves equipment.

The beginner tour is family-friendly and fine for all interested parties. It’s just a comparatively short walk that focuses on the larger sections of the system. If you are visiting the Grand Canyon and have additional time, a visit to these caverns will add even more adventure to your vacation. Fees vary according to your tour choices.

Peppersauce Cave

Peppersauce Cave, less than 10 miles from Tuscon in Oracle, is actually a system of limestone caves. Specifically located in the Coronado National Forest, it can only be reached via dirt roads that are reportedly poorly maintained. While there is a roadside sign directing you to the official entrance, there are no tours offered.

Despite featuring its own lake, the cave system remains in a primitive state. There are no visitor facilities either. You must squeeze through a tight opening in order to get inside.

The rocks here are generally wet and slippery so along with the required headlamps (preferably on helmets), experts strongly recommend visitors wear non-slip shoes too. Knee and elbow pads aren’t a bad idea either. Do not visit if rain is in the forecast as the water levels here can rise dangerously. The “Big Room” and “The Rabbit Hole” are popular places if you prefer assistance in accessing parts of this system. Admission is free.

The Wave Cave

Journey to Gold Canyon to visit the Wave Cave. It’s probably the only place in the state where you can go surfing in the desert. Here you must first hike through the striking Superstition Mountains to a distinctive rock formation that looks like a wave coming out of a cave.

The hike is three miles round trip and rated as difficult due in part to the 860+-foot elevation gain. The final climb to this cave is considered strenuous and you’ll have to use your hands. The good news is that the cave is big enough to fit a number of hikers seeking relief from the infamous Arizona Sun.  

Watch your step on your hike down because there’s a lot of loose gravel and the slope is somewhat steep as well. Do not attempt this pleasant albeit challenging trek on the hottest summer days. There is a $15.00 fee for parking.

Onyx Cave  

Head for the rugged Santa Rita Mountains and the Coronado National Forest to explore the limestone maze of rooms and passageways known as Onyx Cave. Various geological pressures slowly cracked the aged limestone here. Water rushed through the cracks, the cracks grew larger, and eventually resulted in this well-known cave.

The cave was declared an official National Natural Landmark in 1974 and fenced off to keep it safe from damage and vandalism. Today, after restorative efforts, it is back to its original condition. While it is reportedly challenging to reach, it is also possible to have the whole place all to yourself for several hours.  

Now owned by Escabrosa Grotto, Inc., all visitors must make reservations for a visit and gate key at least two weeks ahead of time. Once you’ve done that, you are all set to explore this cave system unencumbered by too many other visitors.

Wind Cave

One of the most popular hikes in Mesa is the trek to Wind Cave. It is three miles in total and includes an elevation gain of almost 800 feet. It should take you no more than a total of two hours.

The terrain here is fairly dominated by palo verde and desert cacti. In fact, it is often comparatively dense with Saguaros. If you hike up there early enough, you’ll be shaded from the sun the entire time.

Once you arrive at the comparatively shallow cave you will be rewarded with not only cooling shade but a memorable view too. The view of downtown Phoenix and other sections of the valley will surprise you. Don’t be in a rush to hike back down though as the trail’s totally exposed to the Arizona sun in the afternoon.  

Parking is limited so get here early. The trailhead is well-marked and has restrooms too. You must buy a day pass for $7.00.

Keyhole Cave

Another required Sedona stop for spelunkers and hikers curious about caves is the Keyhole Cave. You’ll take the moderately-trafficked Sugarloaf Trail to reach this cave. It’s a 2+-mile out-and-back hiking trail that’s open year-round.

You can even bring your dog if you keep him on a leash. Be sure to get here early though because the parking is limited and street parking is not allowed. From the Sugarloaf Trailhead, you’ll actually be able to see the cave in the distance.  

See that huge gaping opening in the mountainside? That’s it! The best time to visit this cave is whenever there is no snow. Otherwise, the hike will not only be steep but will be quite slick too.  

Don’t try this hike immediately after a good rainfall either for similar reasons. Remember that much of this hike is in a wash. So if there’s a good chance of rain, just stay home and don’t risk being caught in a flash flood.

The Coronado Cave  

This cave in Hereford close to the Arizona-Mexico border is actually a subject of much debate amongst hardcore spelunkers. Some argue that it is a large cave with a number of rooms, and others think it is a comparatively small cave. Admission is free but you need to get a free permit at the official visitor center.

The fact is that the cave is as wide as 70 feet in some sections and almost 600 feet long. Depending on your size, you may have to do some crawling in order to get from one section to another. The hike here can be a bit challenging for some since it includes a 500-foot ascent within the first half-mile.

Veteran visitors claim this is the best cave in the entire state for spelunking due in part to its reputed “mysterious aura.” While it is an official part of the popular Coronado National Memorial Park, no state-run guided tours are offered. Admission is free.

The Cave of the Bells

This cave, nestled in Coronado National Forest’s striking Sawmill Canyon in Patagonia, provides perhaps people with the state’s most fun spelunking experience. You have to hike for four miles up a dirt road to reach this place. If you’re not feeling athletic, drive a high-clearance or 4WD there.

Believe it or not, the inside of the cave is actually warm. There’s also a permanent lake not too far from the cave entrance. This underground lake is roughly 263 feet below the surface. The official lake tunnel entry leads to this well-known underground lake.  

Strangely, the deeper you hike, the warmer the temperature of both the air and the lake. Experts say this happens because there is actually some heat source under the surface of the lake. Be aware that, just like Onyx Cave, the entrance to this cave is gated and locked.

Due to this cave’s extremely delicate environment, travelers must contact the Coronado National Forest Supervisor’s office, make reservations, and leave a deposit of $100.00 to get the keys. When the gate keys are returned, the deposit is refunded.

1. Rocky Mountain National Park

Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

You’ll find this national park near Gunnison and Montrose. It is named for the darkness of its sheer gorge walls that rise more than 2,703 feet above the floor of the canyon. Over 430,000 travelers come here annually.

They come to witness the results of millions of years of erosion by the rushing Gunnison River and learn of prehistoric life via the multiple layers of sediment and rock. They also come here to see indigenous plants, elks, moose, and mountain lions.

More athletic visitors hike the rim of the canyon. The unmarked hiking trails are rightfully reserved for expert hikers. Be sure to see the Painted Wall. It’s named for the detailed white-pink markings on the near-famous 2,300-foot-tall cliff. Visit in the summer!

Mesa Verde National Park

This park in Colorado’s Montezuma County is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the ancient, historical ancient cliff dwellings. A number of these precariously perched dwellings are reported to be more than 700 years old and were literally carved right out of the canyon wall.  

If you hike the popular Step House trail you can see one of the well-known cliff-dwelling archaeological sites free of charge. You’ll need to sign up for a guided tour to see the others. If interested, camp there in the fall or spring and avoid the summer crowds.

As you may have already surmised, Colorado is home to only four national parks: Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Mesa Verde National Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park. We don’t encourage anyone to drink and drive, so give yourself between four and six days to enjoy the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Here you will sample multiple bourbons and other assorted treats as you tour 18 different distilleries here in the beautiful Bluegrass state. Oddly there’s no official route to this trail, but you should stay in Louisville or Lexington as your “home base” since the distilleries are all within a couple hours’ drive.

Veteran visitors suggest visiting four or five distilleries each day. Each distillery gives you no more than two ounces of alcohol. Still, if you’d rather avoid driving, take a bus tour.

From there, do a loop drive to Moab and explore both Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park. Next, go west, young man, to see Bryce Canyon National Park, and then Zion before heading back to Vegas. Hike To An Alpine Teahouse

Some of the hiking trails in the park include alpine teahouses that you will see along the way. This provides visitors with yet another fun and unique experience. For those not in the know, an alpine teahouse is a small cabin on a hiking trail that offers hikers various snacks and tea that’s actually made from real local glacial water.

They generally serve sandwiches, cookies, and, of course, tea. So you’re getting a little taste of the park by stopping here. There are two hiking trails in the park that include teahouses.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

Outdoor enthusiasts can go hiking at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, or CRNRA, all year. This 48-mile expanse along the famed Chattahoochee River is fairly full of noteworthy hiking trails. Indeed, this recreational area is separated into 10 individual sections of trails.  

In total there are almost 66 miles of hiking trails here. They are largely wooded, dirt trails located near the river ranging in difficulty between easy to moderate. They are all well marked by trail markers and maps are available. A few of the trails are even open to mountain bikers.

One of the most popular hiking trails here is the East Palisades Trail due in large part to the bamboo forest there. Hikers into history prefer the Sope Creek hike which features some Civil War ruins that people can actually climb around on if they so choose.

Cumberland Island

Beautiful Cumberland Island is a barrier island just off the coast of the Georgia-Florida Border. The island is only accessible by a ferry that docks twice a day, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. For $45.00 each, you can take the educational Lands and Legacies tour and see the Dungeness Ruins, the First African Baptist Church, the Plum Orchard Mansion, and more.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

The trailhead is on the Icefields Parkway’s west side a few kilometers from the official Banff-Jasper border. If you love colorful wildflowers, take the trek in the summer when it is famously blanketed with them.

The Bow Glacier Falls Hike 

This is also a moderately difficult hike. At an elevation of 298 meters, you will hike a total of 8.9 kilometers, out and back. Those who have been, claim that if time is a factor, the Bow Glacier Falls hike certainly doesn’t disappoint.

This scenic hiking trail runs along ice-blue Bow Lake’s shores. It’s one of the park’s most picturesque places. The attractions here will make the hike seem shorter than it actually is.

The area is beautiful both in the summer and the winter. The waterfall is breathtaking when frozen, and incredible while in the summer. You even have your choice of how to complete the trip. Take the short way to the lovely lower falls, turn back, or you can check out the lower falls and then continue to the upper falls. Additionally, the trail runs along Johnston Creek and takes you across an unusual metal walkway built right into the walls of the canyon.

The Lake Agnes Tea House Trail

The out-and-back distance of the Lake Agnes Tea House Trail is 7.4 kilometers. It is reported to be a moderately difficult hike at an elevation of 435 meters. It is a favorite of several travel bloggers as well.

The trailhead is at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and runs upwards through the verdant forest there. Highlights of this hike include magnificent Mirror Lake and a lovely little waterfall located at Lake Agnes. The main attraction, the historic Lake Agnes Tea House, was erected in 1901. Take the hike between June and November and you can enjoy a snack there too!

The Plain Of Six Glaciers Hike

The Plain Of Six Glaciers Hike is, out-and-back, 14.6 kilometers at an elevation of 464 meters. It is a moderately difficult hike that leads to shining Lake Agnes and is reputedly one of the park’s most scenic treks. Mind you, if you turn around at Lake Agnes, your distance will be different.

Of course, whether you go your own way or complete this specific hike, you will be able to take in some spectacular views. Highlights here include Lake Louise and Victoria Glacier. If you’re lucky, you might even spot such wildlife as bighorn sheep or caribou. Once you hike past the lake, the trail gets more difficult. The Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House is open in the summer too.

Lake Annette Via Paradise Valley Trail Hike

This is yet another moderately difficult out-and-back trail. It covers 11.4 kilometers at an elevation of 392 meters. A number of travel experts agree that this is one of the park’s “most underrated hikes.”

As you make your way to Lake Annette you will see hanging glaciers, massive mountain ranges, and Paradise Creek. Indeed, you actually cross this creek more than once and will welcome the shady, densely forested areas while hiking in the hot summer heat. Rest a bit at Lake Annette, then if you’re feeling energetic, continue on to pretty Paradise Valley. Mind you, that makes your total trek almost 21 kilometers.

The Helen Lake Hike

The Helen Lake hike is a moderately difficult, 11.6-kilometer, out-and-back hike at an elevation of 540 meters. This is another often ignored hiking trail. Those in the know say that despite the official difficulty rating, it is comparatively one of the park’s easier treks.

Here you’ll witness a variety of terrains including sparkling lakes, dense, lush forests, and meadows full of glacier lilies, before reaching your glittering goal: scenic Helen Lake. The Sentinel Pass Via The Larch Valley Trail

This is a challenging out-and-back hike with a distance of over 11 kilometers and an elevation of 799 meters. This hike features fantastic fall foliage if you take it in autumn. The larch trees turn a beautiful shade of gold.

At first, the hike is relatively easy as you trek ‘cross the flat ground. However, the switchbacks come quite quickly as the elevation increases. Ah, but remember, you’ll soon see some surprising views of Moraine Lake.

Stop at the summit of striking Sentinel Pass. There, above the trees, you can see every one of the park’s 10 peaks. Keep in mind that the busy Moraine Lake parking lot fills up quite quickly and the park officials close the road, which forces visitors to take the shuttle. Reservations are recommended.

The Cascade Amphitheatre Hike

This challenging, dramatic out-and-back trek will take you a distance of nearly 14 kilometers in total. At an elevation of 924 meters, it is one of the best hikes here in Banff. The trailhead is located right behind Mount Norquay’s Mystic Chairlift.

The first mile is easy as the trail eventually leads you through a largely forested area ‘til you come to the popular natural amphitheater. Once you reach the amphitheater, you may wish to summit Cascade Mountain. Mind you, it is no easy task to do so. Indeed, unless you have previous climbing experience you should probably not attempt the feat.

 The Cory And Edith Pass Loop

This challenging loop trail has a total distance of 12.7 kilometers and an elevation of 1,135 meters. It is the significant elevation gain and an area that requires you to scramble over rocks that makes this little Banff outdoor adventure a challenge. On the other hand, it certainly is a heck of a way to avoid crowds of tourists!

So, get in shape and then head up the Cory Pass side and head down the Edith Pass. This way you will be able to get some incredible views of magnificent Mount Cory. Doing it this way also means the toughest part of your trek comes first so you don’t need to stress over having enough energy to complete the hike. The unique views and overall sense of accomplishment will make all that scrambling over big boulders worth it!

The Bourgeau Lake Trail

This is also a challenging hike. The out-and-back distance here is 13.8 kilometers with an elevation of 960 meters. This is one of the trails the locals enjoy hiking. Additionally, it is tourist-free too.

The trail is highlighted by what makes the Canadian Rockies special: alpine lakes, stunning views, thundering waterfalls, and wildlife. What makes this trail challenging is mainly the section past Bourgeau Lake as you’re heading to Harvey Pass. If you keep hiking beyond the lake it tacks on another 2.4+ kilometers. Additionally, no matter when you go, the pass is reportedly covered in ice and snow.

The Fairview Mountain Hike

This hike is, out-and-back, almost 10 kilometers. It is another challenging hike and has an elevation of 1,012 meters. The journey here begins at lovely Lake Louise.

Many visitors choose a less difficult trail and thus you will encounter fewer travelers along your trip. Some consider this a hard hike because of the steep ascent. Prepare for at least one hour of climbing and know you’ll be crossing a few false summits as well. Once you truly reach the top though, you’ll enjoy incredible 360-degree views.

The Sulphur Mountain Trail

The Sulphur Mountain Trail is a 10.9-kilometer, out-and-back hike. This is yet another challenging, less-trafficked trail perfect for athletic adventurers looking to avoid tourist crowds. This hike starts at the top of the Banff Gondola parking lot. 

What makes the hike hard is its elevation: 756 meters. Plus, you will find yourself scrambling and climbing steep, scree-coated slopes. The views across the entire park and the nearby Sundance Mountain Range once you reach the summit make the effort well worthwhile.

The Healy Pass Hike

Last but certainly not least, is this challenging, 18.3-kilometer, out-and-back adventure. The elevation here is 890 meters. The difficulty level here is mainly due to the elevation gain and the length of the trail.  

If you are a regular hiker you should have the endurance to handle the hike. Much of it leads through a lush, canopied forest, opening up as you get close to Healy Pass. Enjoy the sweeping lake and mountain views.

While this Banff trail includes picturesque scenery in the summer, the fall foliage is particularly colorful. If you hike it in the summer, you will discover a valley full of colorful wildflowers. Hike it in the fall and you will see the golden, fiery larch trees.

Dine On 20 Peso Tacos At Taquería Honorio

Eating street tacos is supposedly a rite of passage in Mexico. In Tulum, the best place to sample some is Taquería Honorio. This local eatery is frill-free but the tacos only cost 20 pesos (less than 1 USD).

Veteran visitors say you simply must try the poc chuc and cochinita pibil tacos. There are vegetarian options too. Get there early. You still might have to stand in a line but they frequently sell out by 1 p.m.

Rent A Bicycle

Getaway From All The Crowds At Laguna Kaan Luum

Explore The Tulum Ruins

Another must-do here is seeing the Tulum Ruins. They’re located high upon the cragged cliffs above the sparkling Caribbean. This is one of the only walled cities constructed by the Mayans and the sole settlement they built on a beach.

1.  The Dark Watchers, Big Sur

The Santa Maria Times reported that strange stories about the “mysterious figures” keeping watch on the allegedly inaccessible bluffs and peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountains harken back hundreds of years.

They were first officially documented by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo back in 1542 when he was sailing past the range. The Spanish settlers there called them “Los Vigilantes Oscuros”. Writer John Steinback claimed to have seen them and even referenced them in a short story titled “Flight”. These shadowy figures are generally seen at sundown, watching and waiting, and are almost 10 feet tall.

The Preston Castle, Ione

The 230-acre, self-sufficient property Preston Castle was intended to be an alternative to a juvenile detention center. Offenders would be sent here to learn a trade instead of being imprisoned. It opened its gates in June of 1894.  

It soon gained a reputation as a place where both the staff and residents committed violent acts. No less than 16 young men died here. As a result of a brutal attack, housekeeper Anna Corbin also died here. In 1960 it was closed. Veteran visitors have reported hearing disembodied voices, doors slamming, and even “ghostly assaults.”

The Cecil Hotel, Los Angeles

After the body of missing student, Elisa Lam was found in a closed water tank on the Cecil Hotel’s roof, the place became notorious. The mystery in which her death is enshrouded was made infamous when security footage of the co-ed behaving oddly in the hotel elevators went viral. Prior to this though, the Cecil had already garnered a bad reputation. Since its opening in 1942, several violent deaths have occurred there and two serial killers have been documented in the hotel logs. It’s reportedly one of the city’s most haunted hotels.

The Brookdale Lodge, Santa Cruz

Built in 1890, The Brookdale Lodge has had numerous celebrity guests, including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and President Hoover. A destructive fire and the death of a guest led to its closure in 2011. Prior to its six-year abandonment, several guests and employees claimed to have seen a little girl in a dated white dress running around here. She’s believed to be Sarah Logan, a girl who drowned in the creek there in 1892. Frequent sightings led to the designation of a specific area where people left books and toys that were often later discovered to have been moved.

The Ghost Town of Cerro Gordo 

Cerro Gordo is a former mining town located in the Inyo Mountains. Founded in 1867, it once included brothels, hotels, and saloons. In the late 1870s, however, the price of silver dropped and it was abandoned. No less than 30 men died in the Cerro Gordo mines. Currently, the resident owner, Brent Underwood, has reported such unsettling events as books falling from shelves by themselves and lights coming on in abandoned buildings. Visitors to the town’s American Hotel reported spectral energies and strange sightings until it mysteriously burned down in June of 2020.

The Point Sur Lighthouse, Monterey County 

One of the state’s most isolated and oldest lighthouses. It was erected in 1889. Regardless of its bright beacon, the coast surrounding the Point Sur lighthouse claimed multiple lives between multiple shipwrecks and the infamous 1935 crash of the USS Macon.  

Locals say it is now haunted by those who tragically died. Numerous people have reported seeing the specters of past lighthouse keepers too, including a tall male dressed in blue, walking the property. Paranormal investigators recorded a strange voice whispering: “Now she wants you to go home.”

The Padre Hotel, Bakersfield

This luxury hotel, which opened in 1928, has a history of multiple tragedies. A fire caused several deaths in the 1950s. Next, there was an earthquake that killed children.  

Other people, tangled in torrid love triangles, committed suicide here by jumping off the roof. During renovations in 2010, both guests and staff noted a child’s handprint that couldn’t be cleaned or painted over. There were reported instances of poltergeist activity, and the appearance of ghostly apparitions as well.

La Purisima, Lompoc

Founded in 1787, this Franciscan Mission was originally part of an early colonization movement that endangered the local Chumash Indians. The Spanish missionaries inadvertently introduced more than one deadly disease to the area that impacted on the Chumash people because they had no immunity. Thousands died in a relatively short time. La Purisima was abandoned sometime in the 1840s, but visitors still report having heard eerie whispers and shapes on the property of the present-day museum.

The Evergreen Cemetery, Santa Cruz County 

This is one of the county’s oldest protestant cemeteries and one of the most active. Established in 1858, a diverse group of individuals rests here: artists, Chinese immigrants, gold prospectors, and travelers. Encounters with a number of different spirits have been documented as early as 1902. Whether it be an old lady tending to her vanishing cabin or distinctly disembodied childish laughter, this area is seemingly haunted.

The Winchester Mystery House, San Jose 

Heiress Sarah Winchester lost her husband, her mother, and her father-in-law to tuberculosis within a single year. After their passing, she bought and started to renovate a little two-story house in San Jose that would go on to become the famous Winchester Mystery House. She spent 38 years adding strange architectural elements, resulting in a huge mansion that includes 47 stairways, 47 stairways, 161 rooms, and 10,000 windows.  

This was all done, allegedly, to confuse the ghosts of all those killed with Winchester rifles. Since her passing in 1922, many visitors have told of a plethora of paranormal encounters in the house, from feeling icy chills to the odd appearance of an unknown groundskeeper. Several paranormal experts have toured the property.

The Queen Mary, Long Beach

Built during the 1930s, this famous luxury liner has a long and troubled past. The RMS Queen Mary once hosted the likes of such famous passengers as Clark Gable and Winston Winston Churchill. With the arrival of World War II, the vessel was rechristened the “Grey Ghost” and quickly converted to a mode of military transport.

While active, 49 deaths occurred aboard her. Today this retired ocean liner is a unique hotel. Both guests and staff have told tales of seeing spectral former passengers wandering the corridors, disembodied sounds, significant changes in temperature, and even “the echoing cries” of several small children.

The Chilnualna Falls Trail, Yosemite National Park

This is a well-known 8.4-mile loop haunted hiking trail that leads past a trio of beautiful waterfalls and a peaceful lake. Ah, but placid Lake is perhaps deceptive. Ahwahneechee legend has it that a young boy once drowned in this very lake.

Veteran visitors report hearing the spirit of the boy calling for help. Best stay away though, local folklore also notes that anyone who goes into the lake to try to offer aid is also mysteriously drowned in its dark depths.

“The Court of Mysteries”, Santa Cruz

You will find the enigmatic strange structure known locally as “The Court of Mysteries” at 519 Fair Avenue. The building was built by bricklayer Kenneth Kitchen in the 1930s. Its design was obviously inspired by Hindi temples and includes astrological motifs and arcane patterns.

Kitchen only worked at night in an attempt to maintain secrecy. He added multiple radio towers and even an “anti-submarine device” there, which worked well enough to cause the U.S. Navy to intervene. In 1953, he abandoned the place, with no explanation. To date, neighbors still report seeing apparitions wandering the property.

The Hotel del Coronado, San Diego

Regular readers might recognize this “star” of television and film, but the terrifying truth is this hotel, open since 1888, is also home to the city’s most famous ghosts. American Kate Morgan checked in here in 1892, waiting for her husband to join her. She was discovered dead at the foot of an outdoor staircase four days later.

Today guests and work staff come across blinking, flickering lights, unexplainable drops in temperature, oddly behaving televisions, and even phantasmal scents in the third-floor room Morgan once occupied. Paranormal investigators have also noted odd activities in the hotel’s gift shop, where merchandise has been observed throwing itself off the store shelves. Similar strange occurrences have also been reported in Room 3519, where the body of the original owner’s mistress was allegedly found.

Alcatraz Island, San Francisco

Once a military prison, Alcatraz is infamous for its formidable fortress walls and such notorious inmates as “Machine Gun” Kelly and Al Capone. Not one prisoner ever escaped from this miserable maximum-security prison situated on a rugged spur of rock one mile off the San Francisco coast. The prison had a reputation for harsh living conditions and extreme punishments. Rumor has it that the souls of former inmates haunt this famous facility.

People have reported inexplicable noises and voices coming from the utility corridor, and banjo music from the shower room.

Los Coches, Soledad

Los Coches is a famous former stagecoach stop. It is believed to be a place where the past and the present meet. Numerous visitors claim to have experienced “a time shift” simply standing here. Local rumor has it that the owner of the stop murdered miners who were still there when it closed and threw their bodies down an abandoned mine shaft. Neighbors claim they have seen an anonymous figure dressed in black walking around the place at night.

The Moaning Caverns, Vallecito

Discovered by miners in 1851, this cave is named after the moans that emanate from its entrance when the wind passes through it. This also makes the list of creepiest places because 12,000-year-old bones were more recently uncovered in its shafts. Scientists suggest that the wails from this cavern actually lured almost 100 prehistoric residents to their deaths while attempting to investigate the specific source of the moans.

Bodie State Historic Park, Mono County

Bodie is the state’s most well-known ghost town. It began as a mining outpost back in 1859. Regular readers may recall it’s one of the country’s largest unreconstructed ghost towns and includes 200 original structures. Ah, but legend has it that Bodie is also cursed.

Local lore has it that any individual who takes anything from this place will somehow be punished. Indeed, the Bodie State Historic Park Rangers confirm that almost every week they receive letters of apology from tourists who took home souvenirs. The reported misfortunes include a variety of punishments from sudden health issues to mysterious accidents occurring after the unwitting visitor returned home.

El Adobe de Capistrano, San Juan Capistrano

Once frequented by President Richard Nixon, this historical restaurant, built-in 1812, has garnered a reputation for not only delicious food but ghostly residents as well. The structure was once the town’s jailhouse and court. It’s now haunted not only by one of its former inmates but also by the ghosts of those who died during the earthquake that devastated the adjoining San Juan Capistrano mission that same year. Various visitors have reported seeing a decapitated friar at the front door, feeling touches from ghostly hands, and feeling as if they were being watched.

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is the longest operating hotel in the state. It has hosted many celebs including the actress Marilyn Monroe. Wupatki National Monument, USA

Roughly 30 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, in the desert there are high rock outcroppings. Here the rich red hues create a stunning landscape highlighted by five ancient Pueblo structures. The River House Ruins, USA

Yaxchilan, Mexico

Found in the state of Chiapas along the Usumacinta River, this special Mayan metropolis is referred to by some as “an archeological Shangri-La.” It is highlighted by ancient temples, palaces, stairways, and interesting stone blocks that display a variety of hieroglyphic etchings. This ancient city was built sometime in 350 AD. Be sure to venture into the mysterious Labyrinth where you will see a number of distinctive sculptures.

Edzna is another one of Mexico’s less-famous Mayan cities. It is situated roughly one hour out of the city of Campeche in the Yucatan Peninsula. It was reportedly most active between 400 AD and 1000 AD. This ancient place was once the home of approximately 25,000 citizens. Hike through the property and see the main temple and the ball court.

Palenque, Mexico

Deep in the lush jungle of the state of Chiapas, you will discover this medium-sized Mayan metropolis. Monte Alban, Mexico

Founded circa 500 BC, the city of Monte Alban was reportedly the very “center of the Zapotec civilization” for almost a century. Located on a plateau overlooking the massive mountains about six miles out of the city of Oaxaca, this esteemed UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Mesoamerica’s oldest cities. Visit the Main Plaza and see the assortment of well-preserved stone monuments.

Teotihuacan, Mexico

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is both the most significant and the largest pre-Columbian city in the country. Located 25 miles out of Mexico City, it was built around 100 BC and grew to be the home of more than 125,000 people. It includes residential complexes and many murals. The main attractions here are the Avenue of the Dead and the Pyramid of the Moon.

Xunantunich, Belize

Xunantunich is an ancient Mayan ceremonial site found under a mile from the border of Guatemala. It is 130 feet high and is one of Belize’s tallest ancient structures.

Located in the northern part of the country, this ancient Mayan city was occupied and active from roughly 1500 BC through 900 AD. Oddly enough, the name means “submerged crocodile” in English. Visit this memorable Mayan site in the town of Chalchuapa. Here archaeologists have uncovered metal artifacts dating back to 700 AD. Tikal, Guatemala

This large city is highly significant in terms of Mayan history. Today it is a major part of the Tikal National Park nestled in a rainforest in Guatemala. There are thousands of structures including altars, burial sites, and temples from as far back as 300 AD. Copan, Honduras

Last but certainly not least, Copan. This was once an important center of the Mayan civilization. This massive metropolis is found near the border of Guatemala.

How would you like to live in your own tiny cabin? Maybe you’re the kind of person who sometimes needs to get away from people. Maybe you think you would love to escape to your own private island? What if you could accomplish all of this for less than the cost of your average, traditional single-family home?  

Believe it or not, one American young couple has managed to do all of that. Rather than save their money to purchase a traditional home, they chose to do something else. They went minimalist, then bought an unimpressive piece of property in the state of Florida and focused on making the place their own personal paradise.

Let’s look in on the people who are living large in a tiny home island escape.

1.  A Different Idea

Face it, folks, property ownership is no longer an easy goal to reach, especially for those who have never owned a home. The process is both difficult and expensive. Rather than trying to run the traditional gauntlet of household expenses and decades of mortgage payments, Sam Coser and Tim Davidson had a different idea.

They decided to downsize the dream and avoid some of the usual pitfalls. Their story started with a distinctively dinky domicile and led to erecting a little home island just off the coast of western Florida.

2.  Where It Began

The couple first went looking for a home in Florida in 2017. Coser’s lease was up and Davidson wanted to invest in a home. They had not previously considered a tiny home. They considered them impractical. Still, as the reality of the math began to sink in, their minds changed. After all, there’s nothing wrong with a more humble lifestyle, is there?

3.  A Rather Surprising Discovery

They found what was to be their first home, previously christened “Tiffany”, on Craigslist. Much to Davidson’s credit, he was skeptical. He suspected there was a catch and thought it was a scam. As it turned out, the tiny home had been built by a man named Adam from a company called A New Beginning Tiny Homes. The young couple bought the wee 270-square-foot home on wheels for $72,000 US dollars.

4.  An Old School Influence

This tiny home was named after Louis Comfort Tiffany, the well-known stained-glass artist. Its dinky distinct design is roughly based on a once-popular Craftsman-style bungalow from the 1920s. The individualistic artist’s impact is clear here, from the little light fixtures, and wall sconces to the comparably intricate woodwork and quaint colored glass windows. The morning light creates an unusual effect as it comes through the stained glass windows here.

5.  Almost Mandatory Downsizing

Of course, the couple had only four boxes of personal belongings by the time they moved in here. There’s little room for sentiment here. Davidson digitized important pictures and purchased one digital picture frame.  

He claims he sees them more now than when they still had the hard copies. Before moving, the couple turned every clothes hanger hook in one direction. Once an item was worn and washed, the hangers were turned in the other direction. All the clothing on hangers that had not been turned were thrown in the trash and presumably left for lucky local dumpster divers.

6.  Purrfecting The Place

The tiny home did come fitted out, but the couple had to make some changes. For one, they had to make a litter box for their cat Oliver. They said their cat enjoys the decor and has found places where he can pussyfoot around and check out everything in the little place.

7.  The Comfy Kitchen Area

In this tiny home, you practically walk into the little kitchen area when you enter the place. The couple says though that considering the obvious limits, it was well-planned and designed. The couple’s kitchen contains a farmhouse-like sink, a small combination refrigerator and freezer, and a propane stove.

The area they call a workspace is lit by Tiffany pendant lights. A relatively large and energy-efficient window also lets light into this rather “petite property.” As far as amenities go, the couple managed to buy and install a little washer-dryer combination. While it does take up space, they do save time when it is time to do the laundry.

8.  An Itty Bitty Bijou Bathroom

At the back of this dinky dwelling, is the bathroom. They say that what it lacks in size, it makes up for in stylishness. It is lined with attractive tumbled marble tiles from Italy. The young owners are quite proud of the walk-in rainfall shower, and the corner vanity which makes the best use of what little space is available there.

9.  Are There Any Amenities At All?

One of Coser’s fave features in their small bathroom is the noteworthy Japanese soaking tub. It is mostly made out of salvaged wood. Her significant other told the press it was actually once “an old telephone pole” that was first “cut into blocks” then glued together and coated with some polyurethane. When they are not taking baths, the unique bathtub must be stored above their toilet to give them some floor space in the bathroom. (Still, it beats the heck out of trying to bathe in a gas station restroom sink!)

10.  Scrounging Up Some Storage Space

These pocket-sized property owners learned quite quickly that when it comes to such a pint-sized property, every single available inch is indeed essential, even the otherwise redundant areas that traditional homeowners generally tend to take for granted. Perhaps one of the most interesting storage hacks here is the built-in drawers beneath the stair treads. That is where Davidson keeps his clothes. The small staircase also stores Oliver’s enclosed litter box, the hot water tank, and includes a special place for the pair’s toothbrushes and other assorted toiletries.

11.  A Little Loft Bedroom

The tiny home also has an upper area over the kitchen. This can be used as a guest space but it works better as a little storage loft. At the rear here is the master loft or the couple’s bedroom. Believe it or not, this admittedly snug area actually accommodates a queen-sized bed and a pair of pretty Tiffany-inspired sconces on either side of it. They added a custom headboard that is deep enough to do double-duty as cupboards to curb clutter.

12.  Being On Wheels

Soon Coser and Davidson had Tiffany pitched atop a 24-foot-long Tumbleweed trailer at an unspecified campground located near well-known Tampa Bay. For more than a year, this was what passed for “home sweet home.” Davidson looked at it optimistically.

He told people that having their itty bitty bungalow on wheels gave them a lot more flexibility. He still says that if their job situation changed they could have simply hauled it all off to another, more welcoming location like many people had to do during the Great Depression in the 1930s. (Indeed, it would work well for them in the near future when they would purchase a property.)

13.  But, What About A Really Permanent Place?

One day while online scrolling through Zillow, the traveled twosome stumbled upon what they considered an interesting investment prospect. It was a one-and-a-half-acre island located in Sarasota. There were no utilities there, and only one family had owned the island since 1918.

This isle was now nothing more than an ugly dumping ground where local contractors dropped their assorted unwanted surplus materials. Still, Coser and Davidson were road-weary and wanted a permanent place to call home. Davidson dropped by the owner’s place and negotiated with him. In 2018, Coser and Davidson bought the isle for $200,000 US Dollars.

14.  A ‘Lot’ Of Work To Do

Their island, now known as Shellmate Island, was situated in the center of a 12-acre lake. It was then home to nothing but a couple of dilapidated storage buildings. Nevertheless, it featured a few healthy fruit trees and was nestled amidst comparatively Idyllic surroundings. (Davidson later admitted the place required a real overhaul but their hard work resulted in what they consider to be something special.)

15.  Luck And The Learning Curve

Once the papers were signed, Tiffany still remained at the old campground while the youthful pair began the construction work on the newly-acquired isle that would become their second small residence. This time they wanted to start from scratch and build it on an actual foundation. Unfortunately, Davidson clashed with a reportedly “bad general contractor” and decided to do it himself. To do that, he had to learn everything from the basics of construction to regulations and planning codes. He credits the Sarasota County Planning Department for helping him keep his work up to code.

16.  Small But Strong

The two new settlers soon purchased an octagonal shell from Deltec Homes. Deltec is known for designing hurricane-enduring buildings. Coser and Davidson paid “between $30,000 and $40,000” for the shell.  

Then they “customized the layout.” They soon became the company’s “first tiny house dwellers” in that specific model. Most people buy them for use as sheds or studios. Coser and Davidson, however, were the first customers to literally “live in one.” They believe the place could actually be “the strongest tiny home ever built” due to its original design.

17.  Little Expense In Comparison

This tiny home on Shellmate Island is only 320 square feet. Still, it’s larger than their 270-square-foot Tiffany. It has a comparatively “airy interior” and is cheap too. Their monthly electric bill is only $30.00 monthly. (The US Energy Information Administration reports that the US average is $117.00.) The couple hopes to install a battery pack so they can run everything off electricity.

18.  Optimizing The Small Space 

Their current kitchen includes butcher’s block countertops, mint green cupboards, and white tiling. It’s a step up from Tiffany’s tiny culinary corner. A peninsula-like area can be folded down in order to make more space. Davidson says that they can better utilize the space in an octagon building and thus they have more cabinet and counter space than in a square structure. To complete the picture, they purchased a used Whirlpool refrigerator on Craigslist for $100.00.

19.  Shedding A Little Light On The Subject

Davidson, a wholesale lighting representative, really likes the adaptable overhead lights. He has many different color options and can even select different color temperatures. He can match the light to the natural lighting outside which he says aids in energy levels and sleep patterns.

20.  They Appreciate The Privacy

The couple notes that one of the big differences between living in tiny Tiffany and living in their tiny house on Shellmate Island is a sliding pocket door and a partition wall between their sleeping area and living room. Having that solid physical separation between the two offers them newfound privacy.

21.  A Bright Bedroom 

Speaking of their boudoir, it includes a large picture window that offers views across the isle and provides them with a feeling of spaciousness. In Tiffany, they were required to fully make use of every inch of space. This new home does not mandate as many space-saving solutions. The couple’s complete wardrobe fit under their queen-sized storage bed.

22.  Buying Second-Hand 

They scored a free toilet, with wave-activated flush, free from Craigslist. Habitat for Humanity sold them a mirrored bathroom door for $15.00. For some unexplained reason, they had a leftover butcher’s block countertop from their kitchen which Davidson used to make a folding counter on top of their used washer-dryer as well.

23.  Do-It-Yourself Tiling  

Being willing to learn how to do some things yourself is a big help and perhaps even required when one does not wish or is unable to commit to purchasing a traditional home. Indeed, this tiny octagonal building presented them with a number of different challenges. The shower space, for example, was an unusual shape.  

A standard insert simply would not work. Davidson persevered and did all the tilework by himself. He looks back on it as a “good learning experience” and admits to its imperfections. He confessed: “I know where all the mistakes are!”

24.  Living Little In Covid Times 

Prior to the Covid-19 Pandemic, Coser, a health coach and personal trainer, worked from home. When the government restrictions began, Davidson also soon found himself working out of their little home. She worked in the bedroom with a foldable table, and he sat on their couch and worked on the coffee table. They generally felt lucky to be able to keep working from their dinky domicile although admit that fewer trips to the grocery store meant struggling with figuring out how to store their food for longer periods of time.

25.  A Bargain Makeover

As previously noted, when Coser and Davidson purchased the unimpressive property, the isle they christened Shellmate Island was home to nothing more than a couple of shoddy storage sheds and a decidedly dilapidated little boat port. Despite having their hands full fixing up their tiny home, the young hopeful couple also decided they should probably figure out a way to somehow give the rather rickety boat port a real facelift. Davidson eventually figured out just how to add some structural support to the port.  

He also added a door, sealed its roof, added a couple of wood beams, siding, and mosquito nets. He also gave it a fresh coat of paint. Today, it is really more of an outdoor living area where they can entertain friends and family. It was a real “bargain backyard makeover.”

26.  Entertaining Outdoors  

This recently renovated boat port is now said to be “the perfect hangout spot.” Inside visitors will find a couple of armchairs, a cooler, a couch, fairy lights, a pair of hammocks, and even giant Jenga. By now it should be obvious that it is difficult for the couple to actually host guests inside their small residence, but this additional outside area makes a big difference. Davidson confirms that this space is nice because now they have someplace where they “can entertain.”

27.  They Don’t Have To Stress Over A Long-Term Mortgage

A month or so after it was complete, the pair finally was able to move Tiffany to Shellmate Island as well although as this goes to press, the mortgage on Tiffany had not quite been paid off in full. It should be though before the new year begins. Davidson stated that their chosen lifestyle is the result of a desire for financial freedom, an unwillingness to stress over a decades-long mortgage, and a desire to concentrate on “the right things” in life. Coser and Davidson have opened a consulting business to assist other people hoping to live in a time home too.  

28.  They’re Living Tiny, Not Large

Living large in a tiny home offers one emotional and financial freedom. This couple can’t imagine selling their isle for an actual traditional home, not in the near future anyway. They are considering other options though. The twosome might add a third tiny home that they can lease to others for both the short and long term. They look at this tiny home island escape as “a cool experiment” that they have no intention of letting stagnate.
