Belgium

Now the nation scores again slotting in as the official “15th greenest country” on the planet. Belgium is also tied for first with other countries when it comes to “extremely low pollution due to emissions” and is reportedly in 21st place for fighting climate change.

Spain is no stranger to our lists either. It has been included in articles about outdoor movie theatres, best winter sun locations, most popular hotels, and more. It’s even been included on our list of perfect places for romance. 

Spain is also the largest nation on the entire Iberian Peninsula. The country slots in at 14th place for greenest country on the planet. It is also another one of the nations that tied for first place in the category of “lowest pollution due to emissions and took 18th place fighting climate change.

The land down under, Australia, also has a lot to offer travelers. It now receives an additional honor that should attract those concerned about conservation and ecology as well. It is the first non-European nation to make it onto this official list of the greenest countries on the planet.

Overall, Australia slots in at number 13. It ranks at 25 for drinking water and sanitation, 20 for fighting climate change, and number 11 under the category of environmental health. More importantly, it climbs to number two for air quality.

 By now our regular readers know that Europe has some incredibly beautiful landscapes that include everything from epic alpine scenery and fairytale-like forests to romantic island paradises.  Still, we have no intention of sitting on our laurels and taking it easy.  We know that there are still a lot of natural wonders out there that you have yet to hear much about yet.  With that thought in mind, here are 17 of the most underrated natural wonders in Europe.

Bornholm, Denmark

Bornholm is a Danish isle situated in the Baltic Sea.  It’s northeast of Germany, and south of Sweden.  It stretches over an area of 227+ square miles (over 588 kilometers).

Bornholm has remarkable beaches too.  The sand is so fine there that Napoleon is rumored to have used its sand in all his hourglasses.

Las Médulas, Spain

Las Médulas is a historic Spanish gold mining site.  It is located close to Ponferrada in the comarca of El Bierzo. It was also once Spain’s most important gold mine and the largest open-pit gold mine in all of the Roman Empire.  Its unusual shape is due to the specific mining techniques the ancient Romans used to mine gold from the mountains.

Alentejo, Portugal

The Algarve is arguably Portugal’s most popular famous coastline.  The Alentejo. however,  is definitely underrated, despite its incredible beaches and exceptional backcountry, which has millions of cork trees.  The name is Portuguese.  It translates to “beyond (além) the Tagus river” (Tejo).  Alentejo is also the cultural, geographical, and historical region of southern and south-central Portugal.

Mullerthal Region, Luxembourg

The Mullerthal Region of Luxembourg is also known as “Little Switzerland.”  The area is an unusual biotope marked by surprising and beguiling sandstone formations.  Soil erosion and the unique makeup of the rock are responsible for the creation of the landscape there.  It is also known for its quaint villages and picturesque hilly landscape.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is a beautiful lake located in the Julian Alps of the popular Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia.  The lake is thusly named because it adjoins the town of Bled.  This lake includes a little island where you can take a pletna or gondola to see the enchanted Church of the Assumption.

Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

The lovely Plitvice Lakes are a noteworthy network of 16 different lakes connected by stunning waterfalls.  These lakes are one of the most incredible wonders of nature.  The Plitvice Lakes is also the home to a diverse habitat.  There you may discover numerous species of wildlife and plants including eagles, wild cats, and brown bears.

Svalbard, Norway

Svalbard is an archipelago located in the Arctic Ocean.  It is north of Europe’s mainland between Norway and the North Pole.  It’s also one of the northernmost inhabited areas in the world.

Most of these islands consist of fjords and glaciers.  There you’ll also discover largely untouched arctic wilds and such wild animals as reindeer, polar bears, and Arctic foxes.

Järvi-Suomi, Finland

In English, it is called “Finnish Lakeland” or the Finnish Lake District.  It is the biggest of Finland’s four landscape dividing regions.  This hilly, forest-flecked area is actually home to 55,000 lakes, including famous Lake Saimaa, the fifth-largest lake in all of Europe.  The lake plateau includes remnants of continental glaciers.

Brimham Rocks, England

Bigar Waterfall, Romania

The Romanian locals refer to the beautiful Bigar Waterfall as “the miracle of Minis Canyon.”  Indeed, the Bigar Waterfall is one of the must-see tourist attractions in Romania.  Blanketed in moss, the waterfall consists of numerous cascading streams from the Mina River creating a halo-like effect.

As Catedrais Beach, Spain

The Wave in Vejle The accomplished Danish architecture firm Henning Larsen recently finished the structure in picturesque Vejle, Denmark. Situated by the Skyttehus Bay, this nine-story, landscape-inspired complex is a five wave-shaped apartment complex which seems to crest upward like a tsunami.

Online sources claim the 150,000-square-foot project includes anywhere between 100 and 140 apartments. However, Aaron Hathaway, Press & Content intern for the architectural firm confirmed via personal email that “The Wave has 100 apartments between its five towers.”

Inspiration and the art The project was originally inspired by the famous Sydney Opera House designed by famous Danish architect Jørn Utzon as well as the town’s distinctive characteristics which include the hills, the bridge, the open, public pier, and the nearby fjord.

The unique, multi-towered building makes an obvious and outstandingly artistic connection between the sea and the residential area, the natural landscape and the town itself. Veteran visitors report that The Wave makes an attractive reflection on the surface of the water, and is an interesting sight to travelers strolling around the area.

Architectural origins, trials, and tribulations This amazing building has been in the works for a long time. In fact, the architects won a competition to design a new apartment community in Vejle for the client, the local real estate business Bertel Nielsen in 2005. The Wave’s construction commenced in 2006.

Unfortunately, following the completion of just two of the towers, work was stopped in 2009 due to financial issues caused by the global recession.

They would not be able to resume construction and work on the final three waves until 2015. The ambitious project would not be officially completed until last month. With the final trio of towers completed, Henning Larsen’s original eye-catching vision is now finally complete.

The apartment complex’ five quickly iconic crests rise high above the Vejle Fjord. The Wave has already been deemed both a tribute to architectural inventiveness and to Vejle’s geographical and historical elements.

Critical acclaim for The Wave International critics and others in the architectural “know,” were praising this project even prior to its completion. The Wave has already earned a number of different awards.

The Danish trade magazine, Byggeri, named the first two towers the “Residential Building of the Year” in 2009. In 2010 both Henning Larsen Architects and The Wave scored an ABB LEAF (Leading European Architects Forum) in the category of “multiple occupancy.” It also won a Vejle Award that same year for “Building of the Year.”

The following year the still incomplete building garnered the Civic Trust Award. It was the first time in over half a century that a Danish architect received the English architectural honor. The already ground-breaking Wave won another LEAF Award (for innovative architecture) in 2012.

Gdansk, Poland

Some tourist might snub this small city on the Baltic coast in favor of some of the larger cities. Nevertheless, Gdansk is the capital of both the Pomeranian Voivodeship and of the country’s principal seaport Kashubia. It’s picturesque, olden cobblestone streets and the popular promenade of Sopot make for a perfect winter walk. Make sure to check out such other sites as the Gdansk Zoo, Abbot’s Palace and the lighthouse in Nowy Port and then enjoy some hot gluhwein.

Flam, Norway

This small village in Flmsdalen is located in Sogn og Fjordane county. It has been a popular but not overly famous tourist destination since the late 1800s. The less than 400 inhabitants play host to nearly 450,000 visitors yearly. If you enjoy train travel, then hop aboard Europe’s historic Flm Line that actually climbs the mountains to carry you into Flm. The journey is reported to be a great way to put people in a festive mood.

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

One of the country’s most visited attractions, this geothermal bathing spot in southwestern Iceland could be the world’s most famous. This incredible spa is situated in a lava field close to Grindavik and roughly 12 miles from the Keflavik International Airport. This area is supplied by water utilized by the Svartsengi geothermal power station. So don your bathing suit, step out into the Icelandic cold and take a dip into the hot water of the Blue Lagoon.

Cotswolds, England

Cotswolds is found in south-central England. It includes the rolling Cotswold Hills which rise from the upper Thames to the escarpment named Cotswold Edge. Less than two hours west of London, this charming place is

The priest caste of India, the Brahmins, started it all by painting their homes blue to make their houses stand out from everyone else’s homes. Years later, the members of other social castes would follow the tradition and paint their houses blue too. Willemstad, Curaçao

A UNESCO world heritage site and the capital, this historic city has a colorful downtown consisting of 750 businesses, restaurants, private residences, shopping centers, and government buildings. It all began in the 1800s with the General Governor Albert Kikkert. Kikkert suffered from frequent migraine headaches.
