The couple led the restoration of 2 million trees and even the animals have returned. It took 20 years for the project to be done and the results were all worth it for many generations.

The Ambitious Project Took 20 Years of Work and Dedication

In the 1990s, Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado came back to his wife in their hometown in native Brazil. He returned home after covering the physically and emotionally exhausting documentary of the Rwandan genocide. Salgado’s hometown used to be rich in natural reserves. For one, the forest near in their area was once a flourishing tropical rainforest. To his dismay, the forest’s old splendor was gone during his return. The area became barren and the wildlife extinguished – some were dead, others have moved to other places for survival.

Thinking of means to help out the ecosystem, Sebastião and his wife Lélia Deluiz Wanick decided to do an ambitious project together. The couple planned of bringing back to life the barren former haven of greeneries. Their efforts started out by planting more trees with the help of the people in their community.

“Perhaps we have a solution,” Salgado said.

“There is a single being that can transform CO2 into oxygen, which is the tree. We need to start tree planting on a massive scale. You need forest with native trees, and you need to gather the seeds in the same region you plant them or the serpents, and the termites won’t come. And if you plant forests that don’t belong, the animal population won’t grow, and the forest will be silent,” he explained.

Commendable Teamwork

The two commendably led a small group of passionate and dedicated people to halt deforestation and push for the process of reforestation. The team made sure that the trees they planted were also native to their land to restore the forest’s former distinct beauty.

It took a good small team and the courage to achieve their goals. Fortunately, things turned out remarkably successful in 20 years’ time. The forest is now back to its old glory and the wildlife has returned. Now, the cacophony of birdcalls and insects buzzing are already present in the place.

In the latest record, an estimated 172 bird species have returned, 33 species of mammals, 293 species of plants, 15 species of reptiles and 15 species of amphibians. The presence of wildlife and healthy trees again has rebuilt the ecosystem.

“Nature is the earth and it is other beings and if we don’t have some kind of spiritual return to our planet, I fear that we will be compromised,” the Salgado said.

“We need to listen to the words of the people on the land,” Salgado added.

The Life-Changing Difference between the Before and After Forest Restoration

The difference between the deforested forest in the 1990s and the revived one in 2019 is quite remarkable.

The couple started the plan between the two of them and later on stretched their efforts together with their newly-founded organization called Instituto Terra. The small organization has since planted 4 million saplings, and guess what? The team has significantly brought the forest back from the dead.

The realization of the project has already inspired millions. It is a visible example that mankind has the power to turn a lifeless forest into something beautiful and thriving again.

The world’s forests are really under threat of destruction. Factors like deforestation, commercialism, and mostly mankind’s’ wrath are all contributors to the degradation of the forest. Salgado’s area in Brazil was just one of the many almost dead forests around the world.

“The land was as sick as I was – everything was destroyed,” Salgado said in The Guardian in 2015.

“Only about 0.5% of the land was covered in trees. Then my wife had a fabulous idea to replant this forest. And when we began to do that, then all the insects and birds and fish returned and, thanks to this increase of the trees I, too, was reborn – this was the most important moment,” he explained.

Based on statistics released by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, there are 129 million hectares of forest that have been lost from the Earth forever since 1990 due to deforestation. The said area is actually equivalent to South Africa. Meanwhile, an area that is approximately the same size as the country of Panama is being lost every year.

Furthermore, according to the World Wildlife Organization, “deforestation is a particular concern in tropical rain forests because these forests are home to much of the world’s biodiversity.”

For instance, the Amazon forest has lost over 17% in the last 50 years. The most attributable factor for this significant loss is forest conversion for cattle ranching.

“Deforestation in this region is particularly rampant near more populated areas, roads, and rivers. But even remote areas have been encroached upon when valuable mahogany, gold, and oil are discovered,” quoted the World Wildlife Organization

Spillway in a Dam’s Reservoir, Northern California: Impressive Glory Hole

This impressive construction in North Carolina was made 50 years ago. It is known as the largest man-made hole in the world. It is located at the Vaca Mountains in Napa, County, California.

The reservoir looks terrifying, given the heavy flow of water and known deep hole, but undoubtedly beautiful. The dam is also known as Monticello Dam while the spillway is called “Glory Hole”. The spillway cannot be underestimated as it can drain up to 48,400 cubic feet per second, thus, swimming anywhere near it is prohibitive because of the obvious risks.

On February 26, 2019, the reservoir naturally spilled through the hole. That phenomenon was considered as an astounding mix of nature and man-made, although a bit startling.

Gates of Hell (Darvaza), Turkmenistan: With Orange Flames and Boiling Mud

Have you heard of a cavern of fire- with orange flames and boiling mud? If not, then discover the Darvaza gas crater or also referred to as the “Gates of Hell“.

People were the ones who created the crater situated near the village of Derweze (or Darvaza), Turkmenistan. What caused the continuous blaze was when a natural gas pocket collapsed into the crater. The fire has been burning since 1971. Geologists only intended to initiate the fire to contain the releases of poisonous gases, and expected to mitigate the fire in weeks’ time. However, nobody thought it would still burn for decades already.

The gas reserve found in this unique space of Darvaza is accordingly one of the largest in the world.

Er Wang Dong, China: Hidden Large Cave

A hidden large cave is located in the Wulong Karst region of Wulong County, China. This cave is called “Er Wang Dong” which means “Second Royal Cave”.

This cave system has just been recently explored. To the surprise of the expert team of climbers and photographers who explored the place, the cave is so large that it has its own weather system. It has an estimated height of 820 ft from the bottom of the cave and area coverage of 51,000 meters.

Not so much is seen from the top because it is dark and the ground is covered with thick foliage, that is why the hidden portal is apparently full of mystery and unknowns. There are also rare species found in the cave such as non-eyed albino fish, among others. No wonder these rock formations are thought to be portals to the underworld.

Patrick’s Well, Orvieto, Italy: Gateway of Water

One of the famous attractions in Orvieto is the St. Patrick’s Well or Pozzo di San Patrizio. This was built in 1527 to 1537. As a piece of history, the well was built when Pope Clement VII, former head of the Catholic Church, took refuge on Orvieto after escaping from Rome’s holy fortress during the Sack of Rome. The well purposely served as a gateway for alternative water supply in case of a siege.

It has a depth of 72 meters and a width of 13 meters.
