“And now for something completely different . . .” it’s unique little houses that will surely make you look twice! Recently, there has been a significant surge in what some are now referring to as “the tiny home movement.”

Whether it be a floating cabin or a camouflaged hut, more and more individualistic home designs are coming to the fore. Flying in the face of standard home dimensions, diminutive designers are increasingly letting their overactive imaginations go crazy and the end results are often amazing. Thus, we have perused places all over the planet to present to you the world’s most surprising and surreal tiny homes.

World’s Most Surprising And Surreal Tiny Homes

1. Manshausen 2.0 Sea Cabins, Norway

The Manshausen 2.0 sea cabins in the municipality of Steigen, extend out into the water, their metallic covering in sharp contrast with the rugged, natural cliffs around them. These humble, distinct dwellings were designed by Snorre Stinessen Architecture. An extension of the popular Manshausen Island Resort.

From here, you can see sea eagles galore. The cabins feature a reportedly “eco-friendly cross-laminated timber structure and are covered in sturdy aluminum sheeting. Inside these petite properties, you will find “full-height windows” and light wood paneling.

Each one of these award-winning tiny homes is located in a specific place and is positioned according to data on extreme weather conditions and wave heights here in the Arctic Circle. They are a safe place to stay when visiting the rugged outcrop. They are durable enough to withstand both wind and sea, see?

Take one campervan and add some out-of-the-box thinking and … voila! This magical mystery motorhome was reportedly inspired by the fabled fairy-tale chateaus frequently found in France. When it is stationary, the sides of this tiny home fold outwards to create a surprisingly spacious living area that can easily accommodate a family of three.

Fueled by a wetback fire, solar panels, and gas this is one of those tiny homes that are totally self-sufficient. It has everything from a solar food dehydrator to a composting toilet. The home folds neatly inwards and downwards when it’s time to go. Once it’s on the road again, only a pair of turrets at the back provide a clue to the exceptional architecture of this chateau on wheels.

If you’re in the lieutenancy area of Argyll and Bute, on Scotland’s west coast, consider getting away from it all by renting a secluded airship. Take in the spectacular views when you’re out over the well-known Isle of Mull. It’s a futuristic cabin that is perfect for people who need to get away from it all.

This tiny home includes a wood-lined aluminum frame complete with a glass conservatory that allows one to gaze out over a four-acre property. It features corrugated metal floor tiles and unusual retro-reminiscent portholes that give the place an overall space-age air. Although its floor plan is compact, this aircraft comes complete with everything a family of travelers needs. It has a separate bathroom, a galley kitchen, two single beds, and a queen bed.

You can reconnect with nature here in a structure of timber and steel. The ceiling-to-floor plexiglass panels provide panoramic views of the forest.

The pinecone treehouse has a comfortable king-sized bed so that you can gaze at the stars as you fall asleep. There are bathroom facilities in another treehouse that guests access via a bridge. This off-the-grid retreat is a perfect getaway for people who are fans of Swiss Family Robinson.

Texas-based ICON came up with an answer to that age-old question: “Why build a house when you could print one?” The answer: Chicon House, the first 3D-printed home in the USA. Working with the non-profit organization, New Story, the tiny home was created as a way of fighting homelessness.

It was constructed from a concrete composite that is resistant to both natural disasters and extreme weather. The house can actually be printed in less than 24 hours. The specific printer used here was specifically designed to work even in areas that often experience power outages, with minimal required technical assistance.

It came with a price tag of $10,000. The people who designed it also hope it could help with housing shortages. This small abode is reportedly resilient, practical, and sustainable. Chicon House helps to revolutionize the field of construction in the future.

If you’re in Hampshire and are considering the idea of drifting dreamily downriver, this egg-traordinary, egg-shaped apartment. Artist Stephen Turner, inspired by nesting seabirds on Beaulieu River, commissioned an egg-ceptional local boat-builder to build a buoyant egg-shaped abode that would serve as both a workplace and occasional quarters. It is made of reclaimed cedarwood.

This egg-clusive egg has an egg-emplary, compact floor plan as well. It includes a hammock, a kitchen, and a desk. It also includes a shuttered porthole and an oval-shaped skylight that allows egg-isting light to illuminate the interior of the egg-ecutive craft. Regardless of the lack of electricity and running water, the artist egg-isted here in egg-cess of a year in this tiny egg, creating art and observing the tides.

Hordaland, Norway is home to some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes. It is highlighted by crystal-clear waters, majestic mountains, and great grass-covered peaks. The Hunting Lodge is located near the water.

It features a curved roof that’s covered with turf and camouflages it by causing it to blend into the countryside. This lodge was designed by the architecture company called Snohetta and constructed in 2013. It is built from a pair of curved wooden beams and hand-cut logs.

It has a surprisingly spacious interior with room for as many as 21 guests. The building has a central fireplace and simple yet stylish decor. Here soft gray furniture contrasts with the warm wood. It is an inviting place that also provides shelter from the often wild weather in this part of the country.

This cleverly-created cabin here in Hammerfest was specifically designed to help promote hiking in the nearby mountains. It beautifully blends in with its rugged setting. The local chapter of the NTA (Norwegian Trekking Association) commissioned the construction.

It is the end product of a creative collaboration between FORMAT engineers and SPINN Arkitekter. They built a building capable of surviving the worst of the extreme climate. The cabin consists of 77 distinct panels that were slotted together over a shell of cross-laminated wood. It is essentially a cozy, cocoon-style cottage that is unaffected by even icy Arctic winds and offers vivid views of the local landscape.

The aptly entitled Bird’s Nest is nestled in Harads. Looking much like a mass of branches and twigs, this distinct dwelling, designed by architect Bertil Harström, was built back in 2010. This suspended camouflaged coop looms high in the pines. This tiny treehouse is only accessible by a ladder leading to a hatch in its floor.

Available for rent, the treetop cabin comes complete with a most surprising, spacious interior. It includes a set of bunk beds, a double bed separated by sliding partitions, and small portholes from which one can see outside. The airy interior also includes inset lighting and pale wood paneling. You will also find a toilet and a seating area from which you can watch the sunset before bedtime.

For it is here, at the famous Fleinvær Refugium, on the edge of the Norwegian Sea that you will find an artists’ residence created by TYIN tegnestue Architects. Experts say this firm actually takes “tiny living” to definitely new and even precarious heights.

Here you will discover nine structures including a creative room, kitchen, and even a sauna. This compact community provides protection to both artists and travelers here to experience this out-of-the-way archipelago. An elemental example of out-of-the-box thinking, this imaginative property is quite capable of hosting up to a dozen guests at once.

Each individual cabin is built on stilts in order to aid in impacting the extreme temperatures and strong winds of this hostile environment. The huts are insulated and offer awesome views of the coastline. Artists in need of inspiration often stay here regardless of the often inclement, harsh weather.

Flat-Pack Mirror House, Estonia

It is difficult to write about this flat-pack mirror house. After all, how does one really reflect on a mirrored home that embodies the phrase “now you see it, now you don’t”? This reflective residence is covered in great glass panels and was specifically designed to blend into the local landscape.

This tiny home was designed and created by the imaginative Estonian architectural firm ÖÖD house. This prefabricated place can be constructed in under two days. It can also be customized to suit each individual owner’s personal requirements. The little lodging space includes 200 square feet of snuggly living space.

Nolla Cabin, Finland

© Robin Falck Neste

Do you enjoy camping but have outgrown roughing it? Maybe you’d like to try it but don’t want to immediately give up too much comfort? Check out this tent-like tiny home known as the Nolla Cabin.

Nestled on Vallisaari Island in the Finnish Helsinki archipelago, this magical mirrored holiday home is the brainchild of famous Finnish designer Robin Falck. She was initially inspired by the way in which sunlight leaks through a tent’s entrance and thus designed this glass-fronted forest flat so that guests could enjoy the surrounding scenery. This halcyon habitat was constructed from sustainable materials.

It is powered by both renewable diesel and some solar panels. This reflective residence has a whole host of modern amenities, from a Bose sound system to underfloor heating. It also includes insulated glass that provides privacy yet also allows the tiny house to be as one with the world around it.

Clad in wood and textiles, this petite property also has a separate bathroom. The decor in this woodland cabin is pared-back and minimal yet nonetheless tasteful. It comes complete with an outhouse for hygienic purposes and a small stove for preparing meals too. It is sure to make most people happy campers.

The Escape Pod, United Kingdom

© Podmakers

Most people might think that an escape pod is little more than something from some science movie or TV show. Ah, but this escape pod in Somerset, is real albeit quite earthbound. What this surreal tiny home lacks in living space, it reportedly makes up for in charm.

This rural residence was designed by Podmakers’ own Jeremy Fitter and Dominic Ash. It is constructed of European oak and birch plywood and is covered with cedar shingles. This weatherproof pod can easily be transported, positioned, and installed anywhere.

It was specifically designed to weather British winters and therefore has a wood-burning stove, underfloor heating, and is heavily insulated. It has a wooden framework and a skylight that lets in the sunlight during the day and provides a wonderful window to the stars at night. These portable pods can be customized to suit the specific needs of any owner and can be the perfect place to escape.

The tiny home is 60 square meters in size. It was comparatively easy to build. The floor, roof, and walls are reportedly super-insulated with natural straw bales.
Are you tired of ordinary hotels? How’d you like to check in some place completely different? From futuristic pods to Hobbit-like holes, here are several unusual places to stay around the world.

The Jetstar, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK

If you really enjoy planes then this place is the best place for you! Presently grounded at Redberth close to Tenby, the Jetstar is an airplane from the 1970s that once transported as many as nine passengers. Today airplane aficionados can spend the night there.

This unique, self-catered accommodation includes a single bed, a double bed, and a big leather couch on which someone can sleep. Veteran visitors say it is a great place for couples or even couples with two kids. You can even play pilot thanks to the cockpit’s Xbox.

Collective Governors Island, New York City, US

If you’d like to take in New York City’s distinctive skyline, you don’t have to book a high-rise hotel room. If you want a memorable night in the famous “Big Apple”, stay at Collective Governors Island. Situated on a decommissioned, historic military base (Governors Island), this glamping spot offers incredible views of the Manhattan shore, the New York harbor, and the famous Statue of Liberty. Enjoy eating dinner at the campground’s restaurant and some s’mores for dessert at a cozy communal campfire. Don’t forget to see the city too.
