On this route, there are shuttle stops, joining scenic viewpoints with such park facilities as the informative Grand Canyon Visitor Center. Enjoy the views from such lookouts as Powell Point and Mather Point as you make your way along the popular South Rim Trail. Veteran visitors confirm that Yavapai Point is one of the best places to see the sunset. The viewpoints can be crowded during the summer months so get there early.

The Bright Angel Trail

The popular Bright Angel Trail is arguably one of the most iconic hiking trails in the USA. The trail steeply descends from the popular South Rim, and soon reveals incredible views that can’t be seen from the rim itself. Within nine miles the trail descends more than 4,000 feet via seemingly endless switchbacks, from the rim to the rushing Colorado River.

It can, however, be dangerous for novices. Even though this hiking trail has had available water stations along the trail for a number of years, as many as 250 travelers are still rescued from the Grand Canyon every single year. Some inexperienced hikers try to complete the entire trail in a single day. Plan on making it a two-day hike and that will help avoid many issues.

The South Kaibab Trail

This trail drops almost 5,000 feet within seven miles between the well-known South Rim and the river. There are no water sources and little shade. Still, despite the challenges, the rock formations and views are stunning.

If you are interested in day hikes, consider the following turnaround points: Ooh-Aah-Point is only one mile down, Cedar Ridge is 1.5 miles, and Skeleton Point, is three miles and includes views of the river. This trail is also a trailhead for those who are going to backpack into the canyon. Many backpackers prefer the quick elevation hiking downhill.

Bright Angel Point Trail

Hiking the Bright Angel Point is now considered “a standard excursion” when one visits the North Rim. Here you will discover an easily accessible half-mile hiking trail that will lead you to what some say are the “best views of the canyon.” You begin the hike at the North Rim’s Visitor Center and Lodge.

It really is an exceptional introductory trail to complete upon arrival. You will find interpretive information both at the visitor center and along the way. Remember though, since this is the North Rim’s main outlook you will not be alone on this little hike so get there early.

The North Kaibab Trail

This is the one and only officially maintained hiking trail that enters the Grand Canyon from the North Rim. Just like the Bright Angel and South Kaibab Trails, this trail has steep switchbacks the entire way down to the river. If you’d rather do a day hike rather than the rather demanding 14 miles down and back up again, use one of the numerous turnaround points on the trail.

At about five miles, you can turn back at Roaring Springs, the source of the park’s drinking water. Potable water is only available seasonally a healthy half-mile after at the Manzanita Rest Area, and 1.4 miles later, you can camp at the Cottonwood Campground, but you’ll need a permit. On the plus side, this trail is less crowded than its various southern counterparts, if you enjoy solitude.

The Havasu Falls Hike

The Havasu Falls Hike is one of the country’s most well-known waterfall hikes. It’s important to remember that this trail is situated on the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Permits are required and they are not that easy to get.  

Many people have hiking this trail on their bucket list not only to see the wonderful waterfall but also because of the surrounding scenery. The hike is considered moderately strenuous and covers at least 10 miles as well. Regular readers may already know that day hiking to the falls is not permitted. In order to see the falls, you must either do some backpacking and spend the night or choose to do some mule riding.

The Grandview Trail

This enjoyable hiking trail was actually created by old copper miners and their trusty mules. If you’re hoping to avoid the crowds often found on the nearby South Kaibab and Bright Angel Trails, then this South Rim hiking trail fits the bill. This admittedly steep route is also a fine backpacking trail and it’s easier to get a permit for this one too.

Atop Horseshoe Mesa you will find historical mining remains and popular places to camp should you wish to do more than go day hiking. Horseshoe Mesa is also a great place to turn around if you’re just day hiking. The hike is less than six miles and the elevation is under 3,000 feet.

The Widforss Trail

You’ll discover this scenic hiking trail on the North Rim. It’s named for the 20th-century artist, Gunnar Widforss, who was well-known for his paintings of the Grand Canyon. For two miles it follows the North Rim and provides pretty panoramas of the canyon’s quieter side. It continues on through a shaded forest still showing some signs of past forest fires there. Following mile five, you emerge from the forest to enjoy additional attractive views at popular Widforss Point.

The Cape Final Trail

Try hiking the Cape Final Trail on the North Rim. This family-friendly, four-mile hike features memorable views, moderate elevation change, a generally level trail, and quite often no real crowds. This trail winds through the verdant forest and along the edge of the canyon, eventually leading you to the Cape Final viewpoint where you will enjoy stunning views. From this popular precipice, your peepers can peruse plenty of prominent features of the gorgeous Grand Canyon such as the canyon’s eastern edge and the Vishnu Temple.

The Hermit Trail

If you’re looking for a good alternative to rim-to-river-hiking trails on the bustling South Rim, the Hermit Trail, on the western edge of the park, is for you. It offers what some call a “more solitary” experience. In the first two and a half miles, the trail actually drops a total of 2,000 feet.

The drop does make the hike back up a little challenging. Indeed, some experts say only experienced desert hikers should attempt this hike. During the park’s early years, it was actually the official main thoroughfare into the canyon.

Today, much of the foot traffic is the result of day hikers because there are only a few campsites available. Santa Maria Springs, 2.5 miles below the rim, is a good turnaround point. Water’s available here but it must be treated.

The Rim-to-Rim Trail

Regular readers know your rovin’ writer hiked the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim with his father and a small group of scouts over two days. However, if you want to hike it in one day, consider this trail. This trail is 24 miles in length between the North and the South Rims.

Expect an elevation gain of over 4,500 feet and be aware that you should only attempt to hike this in one day if you are an experienced, healthy, long-distance hiker. It’s also important to note that you need to hit the trail before daybreak. If you prefer, you can take a shuttle ride back to the starting point (from May to October). If you’re interested in this challenging adventure, be sure to contact the people at the Backcountry Information Center for additional information.

The Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim Trail

If you’re really hardcore, this is arguably the Grand Canyon’s ultimate adventure hike. The route is generally the same as the previous hike, but rather than wait for the shuttle or call Uber, you basically turn around and do the 24-mile hike once more. As previously noted, rim-to-rim hikes can be completed in two or more days if you obtain a backcountry permit. 

In fact, if you carry your own gear, the popular Bright Angel Campground is nestled in the middle of the trail route close to the Colorado River. There are similar primitive campgrounds on the nearby North Kaibab Trail. This is almost a 50-mile journey and is only permissible during the day. Unless you possess the proper training, you should not attempt it in a single day. The best time to hike this challenging trail is from May to October.

It was praised for its 350 beaches, 940+ waterfalls, 3,600+ mountains, and 7,600 large, lovely natural lakes. New York also includes a number of different state parks and a pair of major forest preserves. Founded in 1885, Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the US. It is also possibly the most famous in the state. There’s also Adirondack Park, established in 1892. It is almost the size of the entire state of Vermont and is therefore the official largest state park in the nation.

North Carolina

North Carolina scores 6.26. It’s situated in the Southeastern United States and became the 12th state in 1789. North Carolina is the 28th largest state in the country covering an area of 53,819 square miles. This state was praised for its 241 beaches and 2,700 mountains.  

It also made the list because of 59 large natural lakes and 885 waterfalls. Let’s not forget that this state is also home to the Outer Banks and the famous Great Smoky Mountains. Colorado

Colorado, in the Western United States’ Mountain West subregion, Colorado garnered a 6.36. It became a state in 1876. Stretching across 104,094 it includes the majority of the Southern Rocky Mountains, the northeastern section of the Colorado Plateau, and the Great Plains’ western edge.

Here you will discover some of the world’s most scenic landscapes. The state has no beaches because it is landlocked. Still, it has a total of almost 4,000 mountains and waterfalls combined.

Wyoming

Also known as “The Cowboy State”, Wyoming, like Colorado, is located in the Western United States’ Mountain West subregion. Montana

The state of Montana, also found in the Western United States’ Mountain West subregion, slots in at number six on the list with a score of 6.87. It became the 41st state in 1889 and, with a total area of 147,040 square miles, it is the fourth-largest state. Interestingly, it is the eighth-least populous state as well.

To the north, it is bordered by Canada. Montana scores plenty of points for its 3,340+ mountains, such as the Beartooth Mountains, and its 3,223 large natural lakes. As regular readers may recall, Flathead Lake is one of the most popular here.

This state is also favored for its 480+ waterfalls. In fact, Morell Falls is a particular favorite. Hawaii

Oregon

The number four most naturally beautiful state takes us back to the mainland. Oregon scored 7.79 for its natural beauty. The state of Oregon is located in the Western United States’ Pacific Northwest region. It became the 33rd state in 1859.  

Indeed, with an area of 98,381 square miles, this state has scenery to suit anyone’s personal preferences. Alaska

The 49th state, Alaska, was granted statehood in 1959. It is located in the northwest extremity of North America. With a total area of 663,268 square miles, Alaska is the largest state. 1. The Snoqualmie Falls, Snoqualmie

Snoqualmie Falls is possibly the most famous waterfall in Washington state. East of Seattle, this 268-foot waterfall is perhaps best known for its inclusion in the opening credits of the 1990 TV show Twin Peaks. It is also known as a special meeting place for native groups.  

Get a better understanding of the significance of the falls at the nearby lodge. Get a closer look and learn more by hiking the interpretive trail. Located right below the falls, it’s less than one mile in length. The best time to visit is during the spring when Snoqualmie has its biggest snowmelt and flow. The summer is warmer, of course, but that’s also when you will encounter more tourists.

Spray Falls, Mount Rainier National Park

Spray Falls is in the northwest Mowich Lake area of the park. You’ll have to hike for 2.25 miles to reach the 350+-foot waterfall. The journey begins on a section of the well-known Wonderland Trail. It’s perhaps most known for being the only trail that actually circles massive Mount Rainier.

The trail will lead you past the popular Eagle’s Cliff overlook, which offers hikers an exceptional view. Follow the short spur trail and soon you will notice a misty cloud for which the waterfall gets its name. If you want a closer look, you will have to work your way around some huge boulders.  

Make a day of hiking to and from the falls. You can even follow the trail beyond the falls into Spray Park’s alpine meadows. Visit during the summer and enjoy the wildflowers in full bloom.

Palouse Falls, Palouse Falls State Park

Palouse Falls is an ice-age waterfall found in Eastern Washington, roughly 40 miles out of Walla Walla. Also, the official state waterfall; it includes a drop of 200 feet, a huge bowl, and a striking gorge. If you require additional information or any assistance, the Palouse Falls State Park, below the falls, provides resources and camping opportunities to visitors.

More importantly, this state park also includes a trio of exceptional observation points. The easiest observation point to access is the lower one. It’s a great place for photographers and painters too if you’re artistically inclined.

Franklin Falls, Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

Nestled in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in King County, this is reported to be “one of the best waterfalls” close to Seattle. The hike to the waterfall is short and with only minimal elevation gain. It’s a short hike on a well-maintained trail.

Thus, it’s also a well-liked family waterfall hike that runs along the Snoqualmie River’s south fork. The water here thunders down 135 feet over a trio of tiers. Only the final 70 feet can be seen from the trail.

You can get closer to the pool beneath the pool but know that the path is slippery. Visit in the summer. It’s the perfect place to chill out.

The Spokane Falls, Spokane

This pair of waterfalls is considered by some travel writers to be a nigh-defining attraction of Riverfront Park and one of the country’s “best urban waterfalls.” Located in the heart of downtown Spokane, both the Upper and Lower Spokane Falls have a long local history. This, too, was an important place for native gatherings. Today the city uses them to create hydroelectric power.  

Amidst all the urban development, the falls continue to be a real tourist attraction. Huntington Park, near City Hall, is a fine place to see the lower falls on land. Riverfront Park’s popular SkyRide features an exciting enclosed-cabin cable ride over the lower falls as well. You’ll get your best views of Upper Falls from a pair of pedestrian bridges.

Whatcom Falls, Bellingham

Whatcom Falls is not only one of the city’s top attractions, but it is also the centerpiece of a popular park of the same name. Washington state’s Whatcom Falls Park welcomes visitors via a well-known Civilian Conservation Corps-era bridge. More importantly, this bridge also is an excellent place from which to see the falls.

If you want to see picturesque Whatcom Creek and other areas here, try hiking the three-plus miles of trails traversing the park. Visit the park’s fish hatchery, and go swimming in the swimming hole too. Other amenities here include interpretive displays, a playground, and picnic shelters.

The Twin Falls, Olallie State Park

Twin Falls in Washington is under an hour from Seattle in Olallie State Park. The hike to see the famous 165-foot waterfall is just two and a half miles. The trailhead is adjacent to the Snoqualmie River’s south fork.  

Ah, but the Twin Falls is not the only water attraction in this state park. You can hike an even shorter trail to the South Fork Picnic Area and the 77-foot-high Weeks Falls. You can also go mountain biking here. Hiking aficionados may also find it good to know that a section of the 212-mile popular Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail runs through this park as well.

Marymere Falls, Olympic National Park

Marymere Falls is nestled in the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. It’s one of the park’s most popular waterfalls and is easily accessible. The trailhead for the hike to the falls is on the peninsula’s north side, roughly half an hour’s drive west of Port Angeles on famous Highway 101.

The trailhead is also close to Lake Crescent’s shoreline. The hike itself is under two miles out and back. The trail is generally flat and leads you through a verdant, old-growth forest. Pack a lunch and rest and enjoy it at this 90-foot waterfall. You should be able to complete the hike itself in less than an hour but the scenery and, of course, the falls will discourage you from setting any speed records.

Panther Creek Falls, Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Looking for another family-friendly hike in Washington? Panther Creek Falls is located just 10 miles north of the rugged Columbia River Gorge. Your outdoor adventure begins at Forest Service Road 65.  

From there it is under half a mile to the falls. Here the water plummets down almost 70 feet into a blue, churning pool. There is also a number of higher rivulets that cascade down the face of the rock, adding even more to the overall beauty.

Need more? This area of the Pacific Northwest is fairly famous for its waterfalls. Not far away, you can visit the towering three-tiered Falls Creek Falls. Head south, and stop at the Columbia River Gorge. It’s home to many of Oregon’s best waterfalls, most notably the 620-foot-high Multnomah Falls.

Wallace Falls, Wallace Falls State Park

The cascading attraction known as Wallace Falls is nestled within the state park of the same name, less than an hour out of Seattle. You can reach this 265-foot waterfall via a moderately trafficked trail that’s 4.6 miles out and back. There is an elevation gain of more than 1,300 feet to the upper falls.  

Much of this is the result of steep switchbacks towards the end of your destination. If you’d prefer less of a hike, you can see the middle falls prior to where the trail takes the first steep turn. If you visit in the summer, you’d best head out early to avoid the crowds.

Iron Creek Falls, Gifford Pinchot National Forest

This wild waterfall is ensconced within the lush Gifford Pinchot National Forest just northeast of famous Mount St. Helens. You can reach this waterfall from Forest Service Road 25. It’s just a steep, tenth-of-a-mile to the creek and falls.

The best time to visit is in the late spring or early summer. This is when Iron Creek Falls flows the heaviest. Indeed, as summer makes its way to fall, the shore around the pool here becomes easier to explore. If you want to spend more time here you can even camp out at the Iron Creek Campground 10 miles north along Forest Service Road 25.

Tumwater Falls, Brewery Park

The iconic multi-tiered landmark along the Deschutes River is just minutes out of the state capital of Olympia in the 15-acre park donated by the well-known Olympia Brewing Company. A narrow gorge separates the upper and lower falls. This place is especially popular on summer afternoons.  

This is a maintained green space that also includes 1.5 miles of hiking trails. You can enjoy high vantage points of the cascading water from a number of different scenic footbridges here. The best time to visit if you’re a fan of wildlife such as fish is from September through October when the salmon are making their way up the river’s specially constructed fish ladder.

Horseshoe Bend

You will find Horseshoe Bend in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The property actually spans an area in both Arizona and Utah. Its popularity often translates to a significant increase in tourist interest and thus it can get a bit crowded.

Nevertheless, this U-shaped turn in the mighty Colorado River remains one of the outstanding places in Arizona to see, and travel experts note that you can still find a few quiet spots if you look. Shutterbugs are also encouraged to “bring a wide-angle lens.” Try a helicopter tour!

Phoenix

Havasu Falls

Havasu Falls is nestled deep within the world-famous Grand Canyon. The colorful pink and orange rocks become even more impressive when you see them through the turquoise water that plunges 80 feet over the scarlet sandstone cliff into the beautiful blue swimming hole below it. It is arguably the most outstanding of the five individual waterfalls you can see on the nigh-famous Havasupai Indian Reservation.  Some refer to this waterfall as a “magical oasis” found in the center of the otherwise arid desert in this region.

Monument Valley

Majestic Monument Valley is actually ensconced in the well-known Navajo Nation on the border of both Arizona and Utah. The Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Are you an aficionado of unique landscapes, check out this outstanding place! This big nature reserve near the Utah state line spans an area of 293,689 acres. It protects Coyote Buttes, Paria Canyon, Paria Plateau, and, of course, the Vermilion Cliffs.

Elevation in the monument range is as high as 6,500 feet above sea level. While you can see some of the property from Highway 89A, you really need a 4×4 vehicle to explore most of this place. Of course, the lack of a tourism infrastructure also means most of this is unspoiled wilderness complete with buttes, mesas, and slot canyons.

Lake Powell And Page

Lovely Lake Powell is a large artificial reservoir and a major vacation stop found on the Colorado River in Utah and Arizona close to the city of Page. Millions of tourists come here every year. They go boating, flyboarding, or go jet-skiing.

From Page, you can actually visit the lake and the previously mentioned Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Other attractions in the area include the Glen Canyon Dam, the Wahweap Overlook, and the Hanging Gardens. You can even take an air tour!

Hoover Dam

The man-made wonder and top landmark known as Hoover Dam is situated on the Arizona – Nevada state border. In fact, thanks to a sign there you can photograph yourself standing in both states at once. It was constructed in the 1930s and, at the time, was the world’s tallest dam.

Learn about its history and see exhibits and models at the Visitor Center. You can learn more about its history, see models and exhibits, and you can take a tour too. If you are short on time and prefer to skip the official tour, you can get a great view from the well-known Mike O’Callaghan Memorial Bridge or the dam’s pedestrian footpath right next to the road.

Saguaro National Park

What better place to see the state’s iconic symbol, the sky-reaching Saguaro cactus, than in Saguaro National Park located near Tucson? There are almost 2 million of them here. The park has two areas: one to the west of the city and the other to the east.

The west side was once named the Tucson Mountain Division and makes a workable day trip out of Phoenix. If you want to see it all, it’s best to stay somewhere in Tucson. In fact, from Tucson, you can see several attractions in one day.

The Montezuma Castle National Monument

The Montezuma Castle National Monument is situated off the main road between Flagstaff and Phoenix, south of Sedona. This large cliff dwelling was erected and utilized by the native Sinagua people in the 1100s. It is a five-story structure with 20 rooms. 

Some travel writers say that the impressive building looks less like a castle than it does an apartment building. At present, tourists are not permitted inside. You can get a good look at it though from the short, paved walk that surrounds it. While you’re in the area, visit Montezuma Well as well. It’s less than 10 miles away.

Tombstone

When you think about visiting the “Old West”, you have a lot of choices. Tombstone, however, is an outstanding choice. Here the entire town recreates the historic gunfight at the O.K. Corral.     

Stroll down dusty E. Allen Street beneath the glaring sun, as gunslingers tip their hats to ladies and a horse-drawn coach leaves the Wells Fargo Stagecoach depot. All at once, the locals scramble for cover. A gunfighter strides down the street, and, well, the end might be a wee bit cheesy but it’s fun. Now head for the silver mine and the Tombstone Courthouse History Museum.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument

If you need a break from Arizona’s tourist stops, this is an outstanding place to visit. It is a stunning, lesser-known gem! It is nestled in a rather remote section of northeastern Arizona on Indigenous land.

Drive around the rim and use a pullout to enjoy the scenery here. Take in the sight of this pretty palate of browns, golds, and reds and the verdant green of the canyon floor. To get the most out of your visit, hire a local guide so you have access to the entire canyon. The visitor center provides a list of guides to all interested travelers.

Flagstaff

Don’t overlook the city of Flagstaff! It’s best known as one of the cities found along Arizona’s portion of the famous “Mother Road”, Route 66. Flagstaff has a distinct landscape because it is almost 7,000 feet above sea level.

Visit in the winter and go skiing. Take the popular Snowbowl Scenic Chairlift up to the memorable Arizona Snowbowl on Agassiz Peak, the state’s second-highest mountain. Williams And Bearizona Wildlife Park

The city of Williams is also located on Route 66. It includes a number of old buildings and the Route 66 Gas Station Museum. If you have time, take the lovely scenic train ride to the Grand Canyon on the popular Grand Canyon Railway. 

Visit Bearizona Wildlife Park. It’s a great wildlife and safari park focused on state wildlife. Here the animals roam free and travelers remain in their vehicles as they drive through the place.

The Sunset Crater Volcano And Wupatki National Monuments

While in the Flagstaff area, consider these two outstanding places too. The popular Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument focuses on a single cinder cone dormant volcano that erupted less than 1,000 years ago. Hike the easy, scenic Lava Flow Trail right through the Bonito Lava Flow.

There’s a loop road that connects the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument to the neighboring Wupatki National Monument. It was the largest, highest, and most influential pueblo less than 800 years ago. There’s no shade, so visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

The Petrified Forest National Park

This unusual national park found between Highway 180 and Highway 40 is perhaps best known for its intricate rock formations and 200-million-year-old petrified tree trunks, petroglyphs, and fossils. It’s a great place to hike and explore. Veteran visitors recommend the Blue Mesa Trail. The Painted Desert Rim Trail is another favorite since it is scenic and not difficult to complete. Visit the interesting and educational Rainbow Forest Museum and learn about the area’s natural history.

The Navajo National Monument

Here you can see a trio of the state’s best-preserved cliff dwellings. The easiest way to see this outstanding place is to just hike the official self-guided Sandal Trail. It’s a paved, 1.3-mile, out-and-back trail that leads to an overlook where you can get a great view of the rugged Betatakin cliff dwelling roughly a quarter of a mile away. There’s also a challenging backcountry hike to the Keet Siel dwelling that actually requires attending a class.

The Lower Salt River And Wild Horses

The calm Lower Salt River winds through the Tonto National Forest. Explore this scenic desert oasis of cacti-dotted scarlet cliffs via boat. While the entire Salt River is 200 miles in length, the Lower Salt River is the best for both kayaking and casual river trips.  

The big draw here though is the wild mustangs. The little herds come to the river to drink. You might even be lucky enough to see them cross the river.

The Apache Trail

While visiting the Phoenix area, don’t forget to check out the Apache Trail located less than 20 miles out of the city. You’ll get a real feel for the wild west and old Phoenix at the same time. The water reservoirs here provide water for a major portion of the population.

You’ll also see local flora and wee spit communities complete with hot dive bars. The trail itself is less than 40 miles in total and features plenty of scenic lookouts. Be sure to check out Goldfield ghost town, Superstition Mountain, and Tortilla Flat too.

Lake Havasu

The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, New Mexico

Our next stop is The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument about 40 miles southwest of Santa Fe or less than an hour out of Albuquerque. Here you can wander through and wonder about huge natural cones of ash, pumice, and tuff deposits rising out of this unique landscape created by numerous volcanic eruptions over six to seven million years ago that covered the area in approximately 1,000 feet of natural debris. The rocks here look almost like tents, and many are as tall as 90 feet. For some great views, hike the easy Cave Loop Trail or the 1.5-mile Canyon Trail to see the Jemez, Sandia, and Sangre de Cristo Mountain ranges.

The Colorado National Monument, Colorado

The Colorado National Monument is a lot more than a mere monument. This striking smorgasbord of rugged rock formations rising from the ground near Grand Junction offers travelers the opportunity to explore a number of red-rock canyons, rough sandstone towers, and even tunnels. Some say the rock formations here are second to none in the Southwest.

Here you can bike, hike, or drive depending on how much exercise you want. In fact, if you’d prefer a scenic drive, take the 23-mile Rim Rock Drive. Be sure to stop at the nearby McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area. Here you will find the world’s “second-highest” number of rock arches, as well as alcoves, hoodoos, and spires.

The Monument Rocks, Kansas

Monument Rocks is the country’s first official National Natural Landmark. Located in Gove County, south of Oakley, these 70-foot-tall towers of chalk mysteriously stand amidst raw ranchlands. It is believed that they are what remains of an ancient body of water that once filled middle America over 80 million years ago.

It is important to remember that you should not touch the rocks. They are quite susceptible to erosion and often contain fossils too. Veteran visitors say the easiest way to get here is to take “Gove County Roads 14 and 16” ‘til you see “Stonehenge-like structures” in the distance. Try to figure out which rock formation is named “Charlie the Dog.”

Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah

Unsurprisingly, Cedar Breaks National Monument is not far from Cedar City. This natural red-rock amphitheater is smaller than Bryce Canyon, but almost 1,500 feet higher. If you want to do the type of things you can do in Bryce but want to avoid crowds, this is the place to be.

Cedar Breaks includes hoodoos, spires, painted cliffs, and fir and spruce forests too. The main road is closed to automobiles in the winter. So, unless you are into snowshoeing, you should probably visit sometime between June through October. Hike the amphitheater’s rim; see the sunset here and go on a ranger-led star party as well.

Hells Canyon, Idaho, Oregon, And Washington

Hells Canyon is a canyon that is ten miles in width and has a depth of nearly 8,000 feet. It is deeper than the Grand Canyon. In fact, it is the deepest river gorge in the United States.  

The canyon spans land in three different states. This natural attraction was carved by the mighty Snake River a few million years ago. As of this writing, there are no bridges here and the area is generally wild and remote. Hike the popular Hells Canyon Scenic Byway along the rift’s Idaho side. Better yet, head for the river bottom and go whitewater rafting or jet boating.

Craters Of The Moon National Monument & Preserve, Idaho

Nestled in the Snake River Plain between the little towns of Carey and Arco, offers travelers 618 square miles of almost every form of lava possible. This includes tree molds, spatter cones, lava tubes, lava rivers, lava beds, and cinder cones ranging from between 2,000 to 15,000 years old. Here you can climb Inferno Cone, explore the easy half-mile Caves Trail through lava tubes, and check out the North Crater Flow Trail conveniently located close to the visitor center.

The Garden Of The Gods, Colorado

The Garden Of The Gods is nestled on the outskirts of Colorado Springs. These 300-foot-tall, 300-million-year-old, natural sandstone rock formations thrust up out of the surrounding pinyon-juniper woodlands, arguably attracting more attention than nearby Pikes Peak. Here you can stroll the various paths just like in a normal garden.

The Cathedral Spires, South Dakota

The Cathedral Spires are ensconced in one of the best state parks in the US, Custer State Park in Custer. Veteran visitors can confirm that this place looks nothing like the local Great Plains. Part of the larger, well-known Needles complex, these great granite spires stand tall like a church choir, towering 500 feet above the lush greenery of the Black Hills.

This heavenly scenery can be seen up close via a surprisingly challenging 1.5-mile hiking trail that takes you amidst the tall towers of solid granite. You can access the trailhead via Needles Highway. Pack in a small picnic for the end of your hike and look for local wildlife.

Devils Tower, Wyoming

Devils Tower is one of the country’s most striking natural wonders and it’s just a brief stop off Interstate 90 too. Located in Crook County, this rock tower towers 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. It is not quite like anything else on the planet. It was created by the ancient intrusion of magma into underground sedimentary rock. 

Devils Tower is considered to be a sacred site to at least 25 Native American Northern Plains tribes. It was the first official national monument. Hike the 1.3-mile Tower Trail around it. Movie mavens might recognize Devils Tower from the classic, famous film Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Mono Lake, California

Magnificent Mono Lake is a large saltwater lake found in the Eastern Sierra. It spans an area of almost 70 square miles. Several things make it special. The lake is one of the oldest in North America.

It does not have an outlet and is reported to be saltier than the Pacific Ocean. The lake is also home to a lot of brine shrimp which makes this spot a great place for birdwatching. Ah, but it is, perhaps, most famous for its characteristic rising limestone stacks called tufta towers.  These spires of solid calcium carbonate are the result of the blend of the alkaline water of the lake and the water from the local freshwater springs.

The Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, Utah And Arizona

The Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness near Page, Arizona is said to be a majestic maze spanning 112,500 acres. Complete with largely untouched plateaus, deserts, cliffs, and backcountry canyons it’s a great place for awesome off-grid adventures for hikers and campers alike. The locals call Victoria Falls Mosi-oa-Tunya, in English, “the Smoke that Thunders.” Located in Africa on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia on the Zambezi River. As the water rushes over the cliff into the gorgeous gorge 100 meters below, it can actually be heard up to 40 kilometers away.

Sossusvlei is situated in the striking Namibian Namib-Naukluft National Park where the sand dunes halt the flow of the Tsauchab River less than 60 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean in the vast Namib Desert. The name roughly translates to mean “dead-end marsh.” This clay and salt pan is surrounded by huge scarlet dunes.  

24. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Travel high into the awesome in southwestern Bolivia’s Andes. Here, 11,995 feet above sea level, you’ll find the world’s largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni. While this might not impact our daily lives, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that many of our “ecologically sensitive” places remain vulnerable. With that in mind, these are the natural wonders that you should see this year, while you still can.

See These Natural Wonders in 2022, Before It’s Too Late

1.  Glacier National Park, USA

Montana’s Glacier National Park could very well be glacier-free before 2030 because of warmer weather and a change in the snowfall. Experts report there were 150 glaciers in 1900. Today there are only 25. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put the meltwater lednian stonefly and western glacier stonefly on the Endangered Species List in 2019. If you want to check out the glaciers, the popular Going-to-the-Sun Road, or even go rafting on the Flathead River, now is the time.

2.  Tuvalu, South Pacific 

The little country of Tuvalu is located between Hawaii and Australia. The nine islands cover 10 untouched square miles of stunning coral reefs and lovely lagoons that are seen by only the most intent adventurers. Sea levels have risen to the point where the highest point here is only a couple of meters above sea level. Indeed, two of the nine isles are about to go under, and experts predict Tuvalu will be uninhabitable in 50 years.

3.  The Everglades, USA

This natural wonder in Florida is shrinking. Since 2000, a 30-year plan to restore the popular “River of Grass” has been in operation. Still, the everglades are now smaller than the state of New Jersey and its 1.5-million-acre expanse is half of its original size. Human interference has impacted the water quality and climate. Nevertheless, it’s still the residence of the American crocodile, the Florida panther, the manatee, and the Pine Rockland Trapdoor Spider.

4.  Belize Barrier Reef, Belize 

This is the world’s second-largest coral reef and unsurprisingly it’s in trouble. It lost half of its coral in numerous areas including its distinctive staghorn coral in 1998. The 300-kilometer reef–where you’ll find the well-known Blue Hole–is home to many marine animals. 90 percent of the species there have yet to be identified and many are currently at risk because of man-made pollution, especially plastic. Over 1,000 species of sea creatures remain at risk.

5.  Doñana National Park, Spain

Doñana National Park in Huelva is home to the largest wetland in Europe. Even though it has a reportedly “high degree of protection,” this rich biodiverse place is still threatened by a list of issues including climate change, industrial projects, invasive species, and land use. At least the Spanish government did put a ban on the dredging of the area in 2016. That at least eliminates the most immediate concern to unique Doñana National Park.

6.  Emperor Penguins, Antarctica

Antarctica may soon look and even feel a lot different. Since the mid-1990s, the Antarctic ice shelves have lost almost 4 trillion metric tons of ice and wildlife has been significantly impacted. According to data in the journal Global Change Biology, by the year 2100, “98 percent of emperor penguin colonies” could be extinct. The penguins’ life cycle relies largely on the presence of stable sea ice. BY 2050, 70 percent of the penguin population will be endangered.

7.  Maldives, South Asia

Scientists predict this archipelago of 200 islands and atolls in the Indian Ocean will be gone in as little as 20 years. Regular readers know of the celebrity clientele, the coral reefs, and white sand beaches. What you don’t know is that it is the country with the world’s lowest terrain. It’s less than one meter above sea level. Numerous scientists believe that climate change will eventually cause enough flooding that before 2100, Maldives will be uninhabitable.

8.  The Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, New Zealand

New Zealand’s marine glaciers have been on the decline for over 20 years. The Franz Josef glacier has lost 1.56 kilometers in length. Furthermore, it’s happened at the fastest rate ever known to man. The famous Fox Glacier has been receding for 13 years. Its access road was closed in 2019 because of a massive landslide and frequent flooding. It can now only be reached via helicopter.

9.  The White Cliffs of Dover, United Kingdom

These iconic cliffs consist of white chalk created from the actual shells of a specific rare species of algae. They have always been affected by bad weather, but beach erosion, reduced sediment supply, and storm waves have all added up to the cliffs eroding 10 times quicker in the past 150 years than during the previous seven millennia.

10.  The Dead Sea, Israel

If you truly want that Instagram picture of you floating in the Dead Sea, best get a move on, people. The dense water is vanishing due to water scarcity issues and excessive mineral mining. The water level is reportedly dropping almost one meter annually and the land itself is sinking almost 15 centimeters each year. Already there are sinkholes and a few resorts have closed their doors. Scientists say it may be gone by 2050.

11.  The Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda

This renowned range of mountains, located between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, has also been affected by climate change. In 2020, Klaus Thymann’s expedition determined that both Mount Speke and Mount Baker no longer have glaciers. Only three of Africa’s five glaciated peaks remain. Mount Stanley’s glacier is now the only remaining glacier in the Rwenzori Mountains and researchers report it could be gone by 2025.

12.  Wedding Cake Rock, Australia

Every cloud has a silver lining! TikTok “influencers” aren’t going to be able to shoot themselves doing handstands on the edge of Wedding Cake Rock anymore. This natural wonder is about an hour out of the village of Bundeena in New South Wales. The unusual rock, distinctly pale due to iron leaching, was fenced off in order to keep curiosity seekers away from the cliff edges. The rock’s sandstone layers are now considered “dangerously soft” and could collapse.

13.  Mount Fuji, Japan

Mount Fuji is a “must-see” when in Japan. Unfortunately, the image of this iconic snow-capped volcano may soon be little more than a distant memory as its snowfall has been decreasing over the past decade. NASA reported that the snow cover on Mount Fuji in 2020 was the lowest it’s been in the past 20 years. Indeed, the snowcap was reported to be significantly smaller or even absent during that year.

14.  Lanikai Beach, USA

This famous beach on the Windward Coast of Hawaii’s island of Oahu is in trouble. Sandbag walls and manmade seawalls are adding to the overall coastal erosion here. In fact, the beach’s southern half is no longer walkable and a lot of the shoreline that remains is eroded. Experts state that the island has lost almost 25 percent of its beaches because of shoreline hardening, and by 2050 that fateful figure could climb to 40 percent.

15.  The Congo Basin, Africa 

The second-largest rainforest in the world is not only being threatened by climate change but also from a growing demand for timber. The forests of Cameroon and Gabon, for example, are being intensely logged. There are also issues concerning illegal oil drilling and further deforestation which could result in the loss of as much as two-thirds of the rainforest environment by 2040. This loss would also increase the rate of climate change.

16.  The Atsinanana Rainforest, Madagascar

This official World Heritage Site is a must-visit for many travelers. The area along the 1,000-mile stretch of eastern Madagascar includes six national parks and is the home of many rare species that are now severely threatened. Illegal logging and poaching here pushed this place onto the UNESCO “in danger” list 12 years ago. Other significant issues impacting this area include agricultural encroachment, climate change, infrastructure development, livestock grazing, mining, and quarrying.

17.  Sundarbans, Bangladesh, and India

This group of low-lying islands is located in the Bay of Bengal and spans a total of 3,800 square miles. Here you will find one of the world’s largest mangrove forests, as well as rare Bengal tigers, Ganges River dolphins, chital deer, and saltwater crocodiles. The coastlines here are eroding due to continuing deforestation, overfishing, and deforestation. Official estimates indicate that if the sea level rises another 45 centimeters approximately 75 percent of the mangroves will perish.

18.  The Great Barrier Reef, Australia

The 1,200-mile Great Barrier Reef on Australia’s northern coast may not be officially “in danger” anymore but is still threatened. Rising ocean temperatures have impacted the reef and its inhabitants and in 2019 Australian officials said it was in “very poor” condition. Climate-induced factors have resulted in the Great Barrier Reef dying at an alarming rate. In the recent past, experts have witnessed almost a 90 percent decrease in new coral.

19.  Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Mountaineers are already no longer able to scale this popular peak because its ice cap has melted due to warming temperatures. Will Gadd, a renowned ice climber, canceled his attempt to climb it in 2020 because of its extensively shrinking glaciers. He opted to film a documentary about the cause of “the big melt” titled “The Last Ascent.” Kilimanjaro’s UNESCO World Heritage status remains “Good With Some Concerns,” but officials expect that within the next 20 years, the glaciers will all be gone.

20.  The Amazon Rainforest, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Venezuela

Roughly 3,800 square miles of this rainforest, the largest on the planet, was destroyed by a fire in 2019. More damage was done by fires in 2020. Scientists presently estimate that it will all but disappear in another 50 years because of the world’s demands for soybeans, timber, and beef. Sadly, it is now actually giving off more carbon dioxide than it can absorb.

The Yangtze is the world’s third-longest river at a length of 3,915 miles. It also supports 50 percent of the nation’s plant and animal species such as Siberian cranes, porpoises, and even giant pandas. Unfortunately, between the heavy industrialization, and dense local human population, both “irreparable flooding and habitat destruction” have reportedly polluted the river and impacted the water supply. Officials are taking action to reach carbon neutrality before 2060. 

22.  Polar Bears, The Arctic 

If you want to see a polar bear in the wild, you’d best get a move on! The Artic’s ecosystem is being threatened by worsening climate conditions. One victim of all that melting ice is the polar bear. Scientific experts believe that the climate change here could make polar bears extinct. When the area of ice decreases, they must move to the coast where there is less food.

According to a BBC report, these glaciers are melting at a rate twice as fast since the 21st century began. The culprit? Global warming. The Himalayas’ retreating glaciers are filling glacial lakes at a dangerous rate. With the loss of more than 1.5 vertical feet of ice annually, the water supply is threatened and the habitat of such endangered species as the snow leopard is being devastated.

24.  Joshua Tree National Park, USA

This national park in California may soon have an ironic name. The iconic trees that have been here in the Mojave Desert for over 2.5 million years may soon be gone. The Joshua Tree National Park is nestled in south-central California.  It features two unique desert climates.  There is the low altitude Colorado Desert which includes cacti, creosote bush,  and other flora.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Also known as the Uyuni Salt Flat, this is the highest and largest continuous salt lake on the planet.  It is situated in the Bolivian state of Potosi.  It becomes an arid desert during dry seasons and contains as much as 10 billion tons of salt.

Jellyfish Lake, Oceania

Some visitors call this body of water in the island nation of Palau in Oceania a “magical lake.”  It is rife with a variety of marine animals including its namesake jellyfish.  Don’t fret though because they’re very small so their stingers are no danger to humans.

Banff National Park, Canada

The Banff National Park is one of Canada’s oldest.  It is also one of the continent’s most visited landmarks.  The park features icefields, impressive rock formations, massive mountains with great glaciers, and oddly, calmly quiet coniferous forests. ‘

Cappadocia, Turkey

Kelimutu, Indonesia

Kelimutu is one of the most well-known volcanoes in Indonesia.  It’s situated in the Flores Islands.  It rises up over 1,600 meters above sea level.

This volcano is perhaps most famous for its more unique aspects.  Here within its crater, you will actually find a trio of lakes that change color.  The color changes are caused by minerals.  What’s most interesting is that this natural phenomenon is influenced by both temperature and time of year.  Within a period of 10 months, the colors can change six times. 

Fernando de Noronha, Brazil

Fernando de Noronha is famous for its white-sand beaches. beautiful landscapes, and freely roaming wild fauna. It’s a volcanic archipelago consisting of roughly 21 islands.  Fernando de Noronha is the sole inhabited island.

The number of yearly visitors is limited to protect the environment from the impact of tourism.  Since the water is warm and clear, it’s a great spot for scuba diving.  It’s also popular with surfers and people into paradisiacal sunsets.  You can also enjoy dolphin watching here.

The Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, Madagascar

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is located in the Melaky Region of northwest Madagascar, Africa.  Some have described it as a stunning “labyrinth of endless rocks” that resembles a long-abandoned city.  The geological accident that created this formation of unusual rocks made the park famous. 

Here amidst these unique rocky crags, one can discover a wide variety of flora and fauna.  In 1990, it was deemed an official UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It’s reputed to be a great place to see for anyone with an interest in nature.

The Great Blue Hole, Belize

The famous Great Blue Hole is a distinctive natural marine sinkhole found off the coast of beautiful Belize.  The Great Blue Hole is named for the beautiful shades of blue created by the immediate change of the water’s depth.  The hole is 124 meters deep and 318 meters wide.  It is a renowned destination for scuba diving.  Due to the hole’s microclimate, marine experts and other scientists have learned a lot about what goes on in the deepest water on earth.

Vinicunca, Peru

Vinicunca is a distinctive, multi-colored mountain in the Andes of Peru.  It’s also referred to as Montaña de Siete Colores (the Seven-Color Mountain), or simply Rainbow Mountain.  It is not only one of the most popular of Peru’s natural wonders but is also world-famous. 

You can only get so close to it via motor vehicle.  After that, you either hike or cycle the rest of the way.  Still, at a height of 5,200 meters, your view will be worth the effort.  The best time to go is during the month of August when it’s nice and dry.

Yellowstone National Park, USA

Yellowstone National Park spans the states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.  It covers over 5,592 square miles,  The park was founded in 1872.  

It’s one of the oldest and even most popular parks on earth.  Here you’ll find canyons, crystal clear lakes, verdant grass fields, and waterfalls.  What makes this place so popular though is its great geysers.  Here you can go camping, hiking, rafting, take educational guided tours, and much more.

Cabo San Lucas, México

World-renowned Cabo San Lucas is in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.  This popular resort city is known for its desert landscapes and beautiful beaches.  Fishing is regulated here because Cabo has a truly diverse marine ecosystem.

One celebrated landmark is the rock formation named “El Arco” or The Arch.  You’ll find it where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez.  Don’t forget this area of Mexico is also known for its seafood.  Be sure to sample some before you leave!

Trolltunga, Norway

Some say the Trolltunga is one of Norway’s “most impressive: natural rock formations.  Situated almost 1,100 meters above sea level, it is perhaps one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions.  That’s pretty amazing considering that one needs to hike almost 13.5 kilometers over rocky, steep terrain.

Veteran visitors say it is worth the effort though as from there the panoramic views of the Ringedalsvatnet are beautiful.  Indeed, this lovely turquoise lake is found ensconced amidst glaciers.  You can get great pictures from Troll’s tongue too!

The Grand Canyon, USA

You don’t have to hike the world-famous Grand Canyon in Arizona, but yours truly can assure you it’s a memorable accomplishment.  Discovered by some Spanish conquistadors, this natural canyon is  277 miles long and up to 6,000 feet deep.  It is perhaps best characterized by its striking scarlet stone walls.  

Here you can enjoy guided tours, horseback riding, rafting, and even helicopter tours.  According to online sources, six million tourists trek here every year.  Travel here in the fall or spring if you wish to avoid the crowds.

The Reed Flute Cave, China

Nestled beneath the earth in Guilin, Guangxi, this natural attraction is named after the nearby native reeds.  In ancient times, the locals used the plants to make flutes.  Those who have been here often compare it to Lewis Carroll’s Alice entering the fabled looking glass. 

Deep inside this nigh surrealistic cave, you’ll see fantastic stalactites, stalagmites, and several other rock formations lit by multi-colored lights that make them almost magical.

Gorgeous Gorges

Are you headed down under? If you’re into beautiful scenery, then read on, fellow traveler. Here are some of the most gorgeous gorges in Australia (or anywhere else)!

1. Kermits Pool

Word is getting out on this secret location. The hiking trail that leads to the shining emerald waters of Kermits Pool leads you through a close canyon, past an attractive natural amphitheatre, and through the tricky Spider Walk. Veteran visitors say when you reach this hidden pool you’ll undoubtedly agree it was certainly (ahem) worth the wade.

2. Ormiston Gorge

Ormiston Gorge is situated 135 kilometers from Alice Springs in lovely West MacDonnell National Park in Northern Territory. It is well-known for its thundering waterfalls and towering red rock walls. Here you can go on nature walks and go swimming too. In fact, the waterhole is there all year. Hikers can access sections of the Larapinta Trail here as well.

3. Ghost Gum Lookout

While you’re in the Ormiston Gorge, don’t forget to visit Ghost Gun Lookout. The path to this lookout is well-paved complete with steps. Set at the top of a red quartzite cliff, it’s perfect for Instagram opportunities. The views as you overlook the beautiful landscape from this popular platform are said to be stunning.

4. Nitmiluk Gorge

Also known as the Katherine Gorge, Nitmiluk Gorge is situated in popular Nitmiluk National Park in Northern Territory. (“Nitmiluk” is the local Jawoyn name for this gorge. Literally translated, it means “Cicada Place”.) This noteworthy sandstone area includes incredible cliffs that veteran visitors say actually “glow in the changing light” and consider it a required stop when in the NT.

5. The Ravines

The ravishing ravines of Nitmiluk Gorge are obviously also a required stop. This great gorge features a notable network of 13 different ravines. The best time to visit popular Nitmiluk Gorge and neighboring Nitmiluk National Park is during the country’s dry season from May through September. The area is much less likely to flood and have fewer crocodiles around there as well.

6. The Saltwater Crocodiles

Speaking of crocodiles, these animals enjoy brackish wetlands and saltwater habitats. Thus, they can sometimes be found along the rivers of Australia. Inquire with the local tourist authorities to learn if it is safe to be anywhere near the water. After all, crocodiles were aggressively hunted for their skin until some time in the 1970s so they might still hold a grudge.

7. Carnarvon Gorge

This gorge can be found in Carnarvon National Park in Central Queensland 593 kilometers northwest of the city of Brisbane. Closer to the towns of Rolleston and Injune, it’s almost 30 kilometers long and 600 meters deep.

The product of water erosion, this gorge is reported to be the most visited place in the park due in part to the numerous opportunities offered there and the easy accessibility.

8. The Ol’ Swimming Hole

If you are a big fan of swimming, nature, enjoy trying to spot wildlife and also like a bit of privacy then all you need to do is grab your trunks and head for a secluded swimming hole. Walk across a moss carpet, visit the waterfalls, see the largest fern in the world, and look for platypuses and even swamp wallabies.

9. Indigenous Artwork

Another highlight of touring the gorgeous gorges of Australia is the “natural art gallery” there. Here you see some of the nation’s best Indigenous art. See Aboriginal Australian artwork created via a surprisingly broad range of media. You may see rock carving, rock painting, wood carving, cave painting, bark painting, and more. Tours are available if you’d prefer to see more than what you might accidentally discover.

10. Hancock Gorge

This lesser-known gorge can be found in the Karijini National Park in Western Australia. Those who have been there say it’s one of the country’s “best-kept secrets.” If you want to get the most out of your visit, it is best to hike this picturesque place with a local guide. If you plan on hiking here though you should know that some stretches are challenging.

11. Windjana Gorge

This gorge is located in the Windjana Gorge National Park in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. This gorge was the result of the Lennard River eroding an almost four-kilometer area of the Napier Range. The range itself, composed of Devonian limestone, was formed more than 300 million years ago.

The gorge’s walls are as high as 30 meters and are more than 100 meters wide. The best time to visit is during the dry season. Be sure to watch for freshwater crocodiles too!

12. The Lennard River

You will also find the Lennard River in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. Explorer Alexander Forrest named the river on June 8, 1879 while venturing into the region. He named it after his fiance Amy Eliza Barrett-Lennard. It’s 180 kilometers in length and has a catchment area that’s 14,757 square kilometers. See the river from above as it mirrors the striking blue of the sky.

13. The Stripes

No, we aren’t talking about the stripes of a living creature. In fact, the once native thylacine or Tasmanian tiger is extinct. The tiger stripes that visitors to Australia are now more likely to see are actually part of the lovely landscape. These particular tiger stripes are natural streaks through the orange and red rock. As Tony might say: “They’re gr-r-reat!”

14. Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon can be found in Australia’s Northern Territory. Specifically, it’s situated at the George Gill Range’s western end in the Watarrka National Park. The canyon’s walls are more than 100 meters tall.

Kings Creek is at the bottom. Hikers here may choose from three different walks. Since a portion of this gorge is actually a sacred Aboriginal site, you should avoid veering off the trails.

15. “The Towering”

1. The Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch is one of the most famous arches in the world (that isn’t golden). It certainly is the most popular arch when it comes to hiking destinations in this park. This is a three-mile return hike.

The hike is difficult enough to require at least two and a half hours. Visit Wolfe Ranch at the start of the hike. You can also stop to rest at the drop off prior to reaching Delicate Arch.

If you visit in April you will also be able to take in a contrasting view of the Utah desert and the snow-capped majestic La Sal Mountains in the background. Sunset and sunrise are the best time of the day to see it. Additionally, you reportedly have a better chance of avoiding crowds at sunrise.

2. The Delicate Arch Viewpoint

If you would rather not do the hiking, this is a great option. Around the corner from the official trailhead, there is a great viewpoint. In fact, there’s an upper and lower viewpoint.

The lower viewpoint is unique but if you choose to hike to the Delicate Arch don’t bother going there as it is comparatively speaking not all that exciting. The upper viewpoint is only half a mile away but it’s a climb up a rocky route. Veteran visitors insist if you can do the actual hike to the Delicate Arch then that should be your priority.

3. The Landscape Arch

The Landscape Arch is actually the start of a more challenging nearly eight-mile hike known as the Devil’s Garden Trail. Those in the know suggest not attempting it with children. The Landscape Arch hike is a 1.6-mile return hike.

It’s an easy hike. You can do it in an hour. While there is some uphill hiking it is not difficult.

Plus, you get the chance to look at more arches on the way. There are also short side trails here. They lead to Pine Tree Arch, Tunnel Arch, and Double O Arch. Additionally, there are other nearby side trails that lead to the Partition and Navajo Arches.

4. The Windows and Turret Arch

You will be able to see three arches in one hike. Better yet, this hike is an easy one-mile round trip hike. It should only take you roughly 45 minutes.

You can see both the North and South Window and then continue on to see the Turret Arch. Be sure to stop, turn and look behind you at the North and South Window
Too. It is then that you will be able to get a good look at the Mask.

5. The Sand Dune Arch

If you are visiting the park and looking for a hike that would be good with kids then look no further. Veteran visitors say this is one of the best hikes to take. This is an easy 0.3-mile return hike.

Within 20 minutes you will reach the Sand Dune Arch. Furthermore, this particular trail takes you between some narrow walls of sedimentary rock. It also has a huge sandy floor also known as “the sandpit” for your kids.

The kids can leap from the small edges of the pit and play in the sand. Not too far from this sandpit, you will be able to spot the sand dunes ensconced in the fins. It actually sheds a lot of light on exactly how the arches here are created in the center of the fins.

(While your more energetic kids play, you can catch your breath there.) On the other hand, if you are more energetic, there is another option. There is another trail that breaks off from the Sand Dune Arch.

This 1.3-mile return trail will lead you to Broken Arch. It is reported to be an easy hike that will take you across flat, open grassland. In fact, these two arches are so close you can actually see Broken Arch from the entrance to the Sand Dune Arch.

6. The Double Arch

The Double Arch is the park’s tallest arch. It is located across from the Windows and Turret Arch. This half-mile return hike is an easy one.

If you have kids this is another especially family-friendly hike. It should take you about 20 minutes to complete the hike. This is also a great trek because you get the opportunity to see four different arches within a short period of time.

In fact, those who have been, confirm that you can even see one from the parking lot itself. This is especially good for families with younger children because they can actually have a visual goal. (In fact, a visual goal is nice for adults too!) The kids can even climb on the rocks under the arch when you get there.

7. The Skyline Arch

The impressive Skyline Arch is situated between Landscape Arch and Sand Dune Arch on the well-known Devils’ Garden Drive. You can easily see it from the road if you’re driving and have a tight schedule. However, if you don’t have a tight schedule you should stop and check it out.

This is an easy 0.4-mile return hike. Hiking over the rocks will only take 20 minutes of your time. More importantly, you’ll be able to get a significantly closer view of this arch.

8. Balanced Rock

The trail around the Balanced Rock perimeter is one of the shortest in the entire park. Thus, it is an easy 0.3-mile return hike that you should be able to complete in 20 minutes or less. It will also provide you with a beautiful view of the previously-mentioned Windows Arch.

9. The Fiery Furnace Hike

Are you tired of easy trails? Arches National Park offers adventure as well. There are some trail markings here but it is still listed as a strenuous, difficult two-mile hike. Indeed, those who have been, say it is still quite possible to get lost and solo hikers are strongly discouraged.

Nevertheless, for more adventurous, experienced hikers this is one of the top ten activities offered here in Moab . You will need agility to explore the narrow, labyrinthine sandstone canyons of Fiery Furnace. You also must get a day-use permit at the park’s visitor center or sign on to a ranger-led hike to go into the famous Fiery Furnace.

The hike is thus named because of the unique sunset scarlet glow. You can see this glow from the overlook viewpoint if you are unable to go on a guided hike. If you do plan on attempting it then be sure to register early as the hike does get booked well in advance.

10. Scenic Drive Viewpoints

Some of this park is also easy to see via the popular 19-mile Arches Scenic Drive. This drive begins at the park’s entrance at Highway 191 and continues to the official Devils Garden trailhead. If you choose this option, be sure to schedule some time to stop at the numerous trailheads and viewpoints you find on the way.

Keep in mind that parking is limited at every stop. Such popular trailheads as Devils Garden and Delicate Arch can be filled for hours, especially on holidays and weekends. Veteran visitors suggest you plan on stopping at such places as Courthouse Towers Viewpoint, Panorama Point and Petrified Dunes Viewpoint.

Photographers should also pull over somewhere safe and get a good shot of the impressive snow-capped La Sal Mountains. There is a popular place named LA Sal Mountains Viewpoint that will provide shutterbugs with a 360-degree view of the mountain and the park. If it’s busy though don’t stress because there are several other spots during the initial portion of the drive where the careful observer will discover similar views.

If you are visiting any national park and have kids, this is simply a must-do activity. Upon arrival, stop in at the Arches National Park Visitor Center. Request a Junior Ranger Program book for your child.

This is said to be one of the best activities you can do with your kids here. This activity engages your children during the visit but they learn from experience. The Arches National Park Junior Ranger program book includes activities specific to this park.

Simply complete the various age-appropriate required activities during your visit. (For example, children are instructed to form specific arch shapes using their bodies while others guess which arch they are portraying.) Before you leave, return to the visitor center. Your kids recite the pro-environment pledge and are presented with an official Junior Ranger badge. This only happens at one time of the year when the specific angle of the setting sun lights up the water from behind thereby creating a stunning firefall effect.

The water appears to cascade down thunderously like a lava flow. The fall takes on a fiery orange, red, and yellow glow. Veteran visitors describe it as “nothing short of breathtaking.”

The experience is something akin to actually seeing the northern lights. All the conditions have to be “just right” in order to actually see this natural phenomenon. It only occurs on a clear evening.

According to the official National Park Service website: “Even some haze or minor cloudiness can greatly diminish or eliminate the effect.” The crowds of people who gather at the famous El Capitan to see this stunning firefall are so large that the National Park Service has established specific daily restrictions on seeing Horsetail Fall. These restrictions include limits on pedestrian traffic and lane closures. Don’t forget your camera!
