Chuuk Lagoon, Oceania

Venetian Lagoon, Italy 

The Venetian Lagoon runs from the rushing Sile (River) in northern Italy to the Brenta (River) in the south. It has a total water surface area of almost 550 square kilometers. It is the Mediterranean Basin’s most significant wetland.  

As the name implies, this lagoon is mainly located in Venice. Historically, it was once just a part of an entire system of estuarine lagoons from Roman times that once ran from Trieste to Ravenna. The lagoon is joined to the Adriatic Sea by a trio of individual inlets.  

They are the Chioggia, the Malamocco, and the Lido. Interestingly enough, while the level of pollution here is a concern, bottlenose dolphins still sometimes enter the lagoon to feed. Visit the nearby Marano-Grado Lagoon, as well.

The Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Not to be confused with the fictional lagoon of motion picture fame, this manmade Blue Lagoon located not far from the fishing town of Grindavik in a lava field in front of the volcanic mountain named Mount Þorbjörn on Iceland’s well-known Reykjanes Peninsula is very real. More specifically, it is less than 20 kilometers from the busy Keflavik International Airport. It is a geothermal spa and one of the nation’s most visited attractions.

The Blue Lagoon is aptly named as the water here is a pleasing turquoise color. A local geothermal power station keeps the temperature of this water at a relatively constant temperature somewhere between 37 and 39 degrees Centigrade. The Laguna Colorada or in English, Red Lagoon, is situated southwest of Bolivia’s high tableland at 14,000 feet above sea level. It is part of the awesome Andes Mountain range. It is a small scarlet salt lake just a couple of hours from the popular Uyuni Salt Flats.

This American lagoon is also home to many wild animals including (but not limited to) beluga whales, black brant, and spotted seals who all bed down on the Chukchi Sea Coast. This double-barrier lagoon is the product of many, many years of volcanic activity initiated by the submarine volcano known as Kavachi. Cueva de los Cristales, Mexico

Also known as the “Cave of Crystals”, until 2000, most people didn’t even know this place in Chihuahua, Mexico existed. It was in 2000 that two siblings mining for silver accidentally uncovered the cavern. The cave is rife with 30-foot, translucent crystals. Some of them are almost half a million years old. You will find Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island in the Bahamas. This hidden gem combines Mexican cenotes with Caribbean beaches, albeit under the sea. It’s reported to be the world’s largest blue hole too.

Head to Marble, Colorado, less than one hour out of Aspen. It is here, following up to an eight-hour hike, that you will find the Crystal Mill. Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil

The name of this attraction in Maranhao translates to “bedsheets of Maranhao.” To be fair, these pristine coastal dunes swaying along 600 square miles of shoreline actually do resemble bed sheets. These distinctive dunes are born of a specific natural process. The Preguicas and Parnaiba Rivers carry sand from within Brazil to the ocean, and the currents and winds blow inland, sending the sand to the shore. This place might seem like a desert, but temporary lagoons appear here between the sand dunes during the rainy season and they reportedly make exceptional fishing holes.

Cavernas de Marmol, Chile 

The Cavernas de Marmol, a.k.a. the Marble Cathedral. Is located in Lake General Carrera. The caves here are accessible only by boat and are found close to the Argentina-Chile border.

They actually reflect the water’s color. They’re turquoise in spring, but dark blue in summer. These reflections also alter the way the marble’s patterns look. If this name reminds you more of a setting for some cheesy horror movie, people also refer to it as the Tsingy Forest. This limestone forest is surrealistically beautiful. You’ll find this beautiful place in Chamarel, Mauritius. We know there’s no pot of gold at the end of rainbows and no matter how quick you are, they’re often gone before you can Instagram them. Ah, but this particular rainbow is actually made out of sand and may withstand thousands of years of erosion and rain. These colorful rainbow sand dunes feature seven different colors of sand: blue, brown, green, purple, red, violet, and yellow. Amazingly, if you scoop up the sand, put it into a clear bottle, and mix it up, the sand will slowly resettle into the individual colored layers.

Deadvlei, Namibia

Journey to Hardap. Here you will find a valley featuring little more than a nigh-oppressive sun and 1,300-foot-tall sand dunes in what was, 900 years ago, a verdant forest irrigated by the mighty Tsauchab River. Now there’s not even enough water here to allow the parched remaining trees to decompose. Thus, they remain there as little more than charred relics. Lord Howe Island, Australia

Some travel bloggers claim that the main reason you probably have not heard of this beautiful island found 375 miles off of New South Wales is because there is no cellphone signal on the exceptional isle. Thus, the two main attractions here are the obvious digital detox and the wildlife. Because it is such an isolated spot, you will find species of birds, plants, and insects that do not exist anywhere else on the planet.

Homebush Bay, Australia 

You might think Sydney is a comparatively unremarkable residential bay, but it slots in on this list for the sea vessel near its coastline. Christened the SS Ayrfield, this ship was constructed during World War I. It carried supplies to US troops in the Pacific Ocean during WWII and in the 1950s was purchased by an oil company and anchored in this bay.

Believe it or not, back in 962 workers built this stone cathedral on a basalt needle without the aid of hydraulics, or cranes. They physically hauled the huge stones all the way up 268 stairs. The Crystal Cave, Iceland

You will find this beautiful place in Skaftafell in Vatnajokull National Park. The 22-foot entryway on the shoreline may mislead you. The blue-crystal cave itself actually tapers downward to no more than four feet. It will actually pop and crack as you enter.  

Fret not though, fellow traveler, as it is not an indication of an imminent collapse. It is simply the sound of the glacier moving slightly against the volcanic island. It was created over centuries and has an almost unreal look to it too. Picos de Europa, Spain

We admit it. Travel writers and tourists alike give a lot of their attention to the Pyrenees and the Alps. Still, the Pico de Europa is a worthy albeit comparatively small mountain range close to the northern coast of Spain. Montana

The state of Montana, also found in the Western United States’ Mountain West subregion, slots in at number six on the list with a score of 6.87. It became the 41st state in 1889 and, with a total area of 147,040 square miles, it is the fourth-largest state. Interestingly, it is the eighth-least populous state as well.

To the north, it is bordered by Canada. Montana scores plenty of points for its 3,340+ mountains, such as the Beartooth Mountains, and its 3,223 large natural lakes. As regular readers may recall, Flathead Lake is one of the most popular here.

This state is also favored for its 480+ waterfalls. In fact, Morell Falls is a particular favorite. Other highlights include the American Prairie Reserve, Bighorn Canyon, Glacier National Park, Grinnell Glacier, The Medicine Rocks, the Lewis and Clark Caverns, and The Badlands of Makoshika State Park.

Hawaii

The Top Five Most Naturally Beautiful States In The USA

How could America’s 50th state, admitted into the union in 1959, not make it into the top five? After all, the Aloha State includes an especially attractive 10,931 square acres just 2,000 miles from the mainland in the pretty Pacific Ocean. Indeed, this unique place is the only archipelago state and birthplace of your rovin’ writer, right?

Its natural beauty earned it a score of 6.97. It was rated highly for its 385 beautiful beaches, 543 wondrous waterfalls, and 1,137 mountains. This tropical locale also features five lovely large natural lakes, and a pair of national parks, including the popular Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Oh, and let’s not forget Waimea Canyon, the dormant volcano crater Haleakala, the active volcanoes Mauna Loa and Kilauea, and Diamond Head as well!

Oregon

The number four most naturally beautiful state takes us back to the mainland. Oregon scored 7.79 for its natural beauty. The state of Oregon is located in the Western United States’ Pacific Northwest region. It became the 33rd state in 1859.  

Indeed, with an area of 98,381 square miles, this state has scenery to suit anyone’s personal preferences. It features 91 beaches (including Cannon Beach), 1,616 waterfalls (such as Elowah Falls, Multnomah Falls, and Toketee Falls), 1,400 large natural lakes (Crater Lake and Lost Lake, most notably), and more than 3,700 named mountains. Other naturally beautiful highlights in this state include the Alvord Desert, the Painted Hills, the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor, the Silver Falls State Park, and Smith Rock.

Alaska

The 49th state, Alaska, was granted statehood in 1959. It is located in the northwest extremity of North America. With a total area of 663,268 square miles, Alaska is the largest state. It covers a total area larger than that of the next three biggest states, Texas, California, and Montana together.

Alaska scored a 7.89 State Beauty Score. Known to some as “America’s Last Frontier”, the state is noted to be the home of the most “ultras” in the country. (An ultra, for those not in the know, is a massive mountain with an elevation of at least 4,921 feet.) Alaska has 64 of them, including Denali. Also known as the Golden State, California remains one of the most naturally beautiful states. It earns its 8.64 State Beauty Score. Recognized as the 31st state in 1850, it encompasses roughly 163,696 square miles and is the third-largest U.S. state. 

Partisan politics aside, the natural beauty here is undeniable. It is the home of the most named mountains in the US. Its 8,008 named peaks make up just under 11 percent of the nation’s total.

1. The Blue Lake, New Zealand

New Zealand is famous for its abundant natural beauty. The moment you leave any city there, you are surrounded by lovely lakes and memorable mountainous terrains. Ah, but New Zealand is also known as the country with the world’s clearest lake. Blue Lake’s visibility depth is between 70 and 80 meters (roughly 230 to 260 feet).  

This lake is also the world’s “clearest body of natural freshwater.” Experts report Blue Lake’s water is similar to distilled water. Researchers who have studied the lake say its clarity is due to a specific underground passage that filters the water as it comes in from Lake Constance. That’s also why its natural color, blue-violet, shows through here.

Lake McKenzie, Australia

Australia’s Lake McKenzie, a.k.a. the “Jewel of the Fraser Island,” is so clear you can see your reflection in it. This is a popular perched lake. It was formed by sand slowly cementing aluminum, iron, and assorted organic matter into an individual layer of material above actual sea level.

It is also important to note that the lake is acidic. Thus, it is not a suitable environment for all species. In fact, it hosts a fragile ecosystem and is therefore a difficult place for healthy aquatic life. The visibility here reaches a maximum of 50 meters. It is so clear because of the lake’s impermeable bottom layer.

Torch Lake, USA 

Located in Michigan, Torch Lake is well-known for its green-blue, crystal-clear water. This fjord-like bay was originally carved out by glaciers during the last ice age. The color of this clear water is due to its geology. Tourists often comment that it resembles the Caribbean Sea complete with several sandbars. The formation of the sandbar across the lake’s mouth separated it from Lake Michigan a long time ago. Today it is the state’s second-largest lake.

Lake Tahoe, USA

The freshwater lake known as Lake Tahoe straddles the state line between Nevada and California. It is one of the clearest lakes on the planet. Visibility here reaches 100 feet.

Lake Baikal, in Siberia, is well-known for both its depth and significant surface area. The lake’s underwater visibility is between 30 and 40 meters. If you go sailing on this lake, you can easily see the ecosystem alive inside it. The resident plankton actually filters the water by consuming various sediments and minerals, making the water consistently clear. You may even be able to spot the lake’s resident freshwater seal species endemic to this area.

Crater Lake, USA

Oregon’s clear Crater Lake is the world’s ninth deepest lake. Situated in the south-central section of the state, it is also famous for its beautiful blue color and is one of Crater Lake National Park’s main tourist attractions. Born from the collapse of massive Mount Mazama 7,500 years ago, the clarity of the lake can be attributed to the rain and snow from whence the lake water originates. Its rich hue remains consistent because there are no other waterways or entrances to the lake and therefore no debris or mineral deposits flow through it.

Lake Mashū, Japan

The endorheic crater lake known as Lake Mashū is located in the memorable Akan Mashu National Park on Japan’s Hokkaido Island. The local residents refer to it as “the Devil’s Lake” perhaps because it was actually formed in a potentially active volcano’s caldera. It is not only a very popular tourist destination but also an official UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visit whenever you wish as it does not freeze in the middle of the winter, and during the summer months, the water level does not rise. The little, crystal-clear lake stays the same regardless of the seasonal heat or a lack of rain. The water is so clear you can see the previously-mentioned tree trunks along the bottom. The clarity of the water is the result of calcium carbonates and hydrophytes in the lake. The residents often say the lake is “a piece of mirror that fell from a goddess’ hands.”

Charming Melissani Lake flows through Melissani Cave. It is nestled on the isle of Kefalonia northwest of the town of Sami and is quite famous for its clear water. Milford Sound is a picturesque fjord along the southwest coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Some say it’s the best part of Fiordland National Park, New Zealand’s largest national park.

Huashan, China

The name “Huashan” is Mandarin for “magnificent mountain.” Huashan is a massive mountain situated close to the well-known city of Huayin located in Shaanxi province, 120 kilometers from Xi’an.

This mountain is made up of mainly Mesozoic-era granite that was thrust upwards due to geological faulting over many millions of years. It includes five individual peaks. The highest is South Peak which is 2.155 meters tall. Taoists consider it to be one of the country’s most sacred mountains. The oldest temple there harkens back to the second century B.C.

Home to 1.3 million people, Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic. Jokulsarlon, Iceland

The name “Jökulsárlón” means “glacial river lagoon.” This lagoon spans an area of 18 square kilometers. With a depth of 248 meters, it is the deepest lake in all of Iceland.  

It is also the largest in Iceland. Veteran visitors agree that what actually first catches your eye about this glacial lagoon is how blue the water is. It has a nigh crystalline quality to it that makes it unique and almost hypnotizing. Complete with striking white icebergs, Jökulsárlón formed between 1934 and 1935, is a part of Vatnajökull National Park, found near the city of Hofn.
