1. The Hermit’s Rest Point

The edge of this famous Arizona canyon at this specific overlook is generally densely forested. Thus, the view can be a wee bit obstructed. On the other hand, this rest point includes not only restrooms, but also a café, and even a gift shop.

The nigh-famous structure was constructed in 1914. The trail itself runs from the rest point to the mighty Colorado River. The rest point was named after the lone Canadian prospector named Louis Boucher.  

Boucher reportedly carved this trail into the famous canyon and built his home in the nearby town of Dripping Springs. This rest point is the westernmost spot on the southern rim and is easily accessible by vehicle. It’s just a few feet from the rim.

Pima Point

Pima Point provides a pretty panoramic vista that runs 40 miles along the South Rim’s northernmost corner. Visitors’ views include Hermit Creek’s red canyons and the green, verdant vegetation near Hermit Creek’s lower end. Interestingly, the creek’s water flows all year long.

Veteran visitors say that “the eastern view from” here is exceptional as it includes The Alligator, the Granite Rapids, and Monument Creek. The Abyss

No, this Grand Canyon viewpoint was not named after the 1989 sci-fi film of the same name. Those in the know confirm this place to be unique. While most of the other spots generally thrust out into the Grand Canyon, the Abyss is actually a significantly steep notch in this striking canyon.

There’s a vertical drop of 3,000 feet down to the rugged Redwall formation. You can take the popular Hermit Road Shuttle which stops at nine different places along the hiking trail. In fact, the Abyss is one of the stopping points. 

You may wish to take your own vehicle there if you visit during the off-season. This deep drop provides people with impressive views of the Tonto Plateau, Granite Rapids, and Colorado River. You can also see The Monument and Monument Creek.

Mohave Point

This Grand Canyon viewpoint will give you great views of Pima Point, and The Abyss. Indeed, those who look to the West should also be able to spot Cocopa, Havasupai, and Yuma Points as well. Those who look down from this viewing area should see Granite Rapids and Boucher Rapids too.

Mind you, some say that the previously mentioned Abyss and the surrounding 3,000-foot towering cliffs steal the show here. If you like to avoid crowds, then you have another reason for visiting Mohave Point. This is one of the viewpoints that is generally less visited and there are a number of lookout points that help to further disperse those travelers who do take the trek here. It can actually be a very peaceful place.

Hopi Point 

Some travel writers claim Hopi Point is the best Grand Canyon viewpoint. This viewpoint is the southern rim’s northernmost spot. It features a fenced-in viewing area and the impressive vista upon Dana Butte over the canyon.

On one side of this viewing area, you will find Salt Creek. The creek empties into the Colorado River and results in rather impressive rapids. On the other side of this lookout is well-known Monument Creek which eventually empties into the Colorado River and results in the great Granite Rapids. Hopi Point offers visitors some memorable unobstructed views and is said by some travel journalists to be the best place on the rim to see some truly awe-spiring, impressive sunsets as well.

Powell Point

Popular Powell Point is found on West Rim Drive and is a notably narrow spur. Here you will be able to see a striking memorial to a pair of historic explorations of the famous Colorado River conducted by American geologist and explorer John Wesley Powell. This viewpoint is maybe a 10-minute hike beyond the well-known Orphan Mine. So if you’re going to the mine, you can visit here as well.

For travelers who prefer not to wait for tour buses, this short walk will allow you to stretch your legs and also check out the attractive pine woods along the way. It is important to remember though that the previously-mentioned Hopi Point blocks some views here at Powell Point. Plus the Colorado River runs through a granite gouge so it is also obstructed from visitors’ views here. On the plus side, it is another great place to see the sunset and avoid large groups of tourists.

Yavapai Point 

If you’re already stopping at Mather Point, Yavapai Point is a nice, easy walk from there. If you prefer to do the road trip thing, you should note that Mather Point offers easily accessible parking. In fact, vehicles that are more than 22 feet in length are not allowed at the surprisingly little parking lot near this viewpoint.

While there, be sure to wander over to the nearby Yavapai Observation Station too. It’s a modest little visitor center complete with numerous books and additional geographical info concerning the Grand Canyon. Those in the know claim that out of the trio of areas that make up the Grand Canyon’s southern rim, Yavapai Point provides people with the most memorable panoramic views.  

It is believed that this is due to the fact that it is the northernmost point and is also closest to the Colorado River. Hikers should note that the hike here will probably take twice as long to get back as it does to reach this viewpoint because of the inclines. This is especially important if you are going to be hiking later that day.

Mather Point

Mather Point is reported to be “the most popular” viewpoint on the South Rim. This is due in part to how accessible it is. In fact, it is the viewpoint that is closest to the parking lot and entrance station and not far from the visitor’s center either.

Mather Point offers travelers extensive, impressive views. It features a pair of railed overlooks that are a bit narrow yet they are situated on huge, projecting rocks providing memorable views to the west. From there you can see the famous Bright Angel Trail and Pipe Creek. You should also be able to see a section of the Tonto Trail too. There is available parking close to this viewpoint.

Ooh Aah Point

Ooh Aah Point is a highlight of the heavily traveled South Kaibab Trail. This beautiful hiking trail is only 1.8 miles. Before reaching this outstanding outlook you will discover that this is a great place for year-round birdwatching and other wildlife viewings as well. Naturally, once you actually do get to the Ooh Aah viewpoint, you will be amazed at the perfect panoramic views of the outstanding eastern area of the canyon.

Yaki Point

You will find Yaki Point at the easternmost part of the Kaibab Trail. It used to be accessible to personal vehicles. Unfortunately, for those who prefer driving to hiking, the parking lot eventually became inadequate to handle the amount of regular traffic it was receiving.

Now if you want to drive your own vehicle there you will probably have to park along the nearby streets close to the picnic areas and hoof it the rest of the way. Still, the views of Clear Creek and Cremation Creek make your walk in well worth it. The views here are distinct in that this viewpoint provides the best view of the South Kaibab Trail and encompasses the western vista.

Desert View Point 

The aptly named Desert View Point is found on Desert View Road. It’s said to be the most popular viewpoint along this road too. If you are driving from the East Entrance, this is the first stop.

Desert View Point is popular with travelers for a couple of reasons. It’s the first place you can stop and see the stunning Grand Canyon, plus you can also check out the Colorado River and the Desert View Watchtower. This tourist attraction is an interesting tower that was designed by American architect Mary Colter.  

It was designed and built in 1932. Made from stone, it is similar in style to the ancient Pueblo towers. You must climb a flight of 85 steps in order to reach the observation deck.

There you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views. This olden tower stands almost 70 feet high and can get crowded. You will also find a campground, a gas station, a restaurant, and even a shop here too.

Navajo Point

You’ll find this viewpoint right down the road from Desert View Point. It’s possible to park right next to the canyon’s rim. It’s a quieter place because it’s as popular with tourists.

Some say it may be less popular because it offers visitors views much like those at Desert Point. From here you can see the popular Desert View Watchtower from a distance and even have a picnic lunch. It’s 7,498 feet high which means it’s the South Rim’s highest point.

Papago Point

If you’re looking for amazing views and don’t mind putting in some effort, Papago Point is the best place to see the Colorado River and unsurprisingly attracts few tourists. The trail here is quite narrow and there are steep drops on either side of it. Papago’s less than one mile from the road and you’ll have to park on the shoulder. If this all sounds a tad too adventurous for you, fret not. Shoshone Point is more easily accessible.

Grandview Point

The south rim’s southernmost point is Grandview Point. The actual official viewpoint here is a wee bit obstructed by some trees. Nevertheless, if you walk a bit on the Grandview Trail you will be able to enjoy totally unobstructed views that others have referred to as “amazing.” This was the first spot developed for tourism. The Grandview Hotel was erected in 1908. Grandview Point is the south rim’s second-highest point with a height of 7,400 feet.

Shoshone Point

Some say this spot off Desert View Road is one of the Grand Canyon’s best-kept secrets. You need to drive a good mile down an unpaved road and then hike roughly half an hour to reach this viewpoint. The hike is an easy one though it just takes time. 

Mind you, if you’re not careful going there, you might miss it. Tech-loving travelers suggest putting on Google Maps prior to heading out. You park your vehicle in the clear dirt area there.

Check online or in your local paper and plan to arrive there before sunset. You may find you have the place all to yourself. The views are reportedly amazing and you can sit and watch as the sky turns colors as the sun slowly sets.  

See the best viewpoints via shuttle or personal vehicle

There are a number of shuttles visitors can use in the Grand Canyon. They run roughly every half hour. Check the shuttle schedules online.  

There are three different routes. In the summer you have to take the shuttle to visit some viewpoints. If you really would rather drive your own vehicle, the best place to do it is in the easternmost section of the canyon.

Be sure to watch for special weekend or holiday offers. Several cruise lines offer travelers good deals around holiday weekends like Black Friday, Labor Day, and Memorial Day. Cruise lines may also frequently add additional weekend specials throughout the year. Discuss your interest with your travel advisor and watch the related websites as well.  

10.  Go with an all-inclusive cruise

Travel journalists report that while a base fare on a budget-friendly line initially looks great, your total cost often climbs as you add in such things as beverage packages, excursions, exercise classes, gratuities, stateroom upgrades, and so forth. An all-inclusive cruise might be a better deal. At least one cruise line has an all-inclusive package that includes alternative dining options, wine, beer, and soft drinks at both lunch and dinner, one free excursion in each port, Wi-Fi access, 24-hour bottled water, teas, and specialty coffees, and more.

Some cruise lines also include gratuities, nightly events, and shuttle service. Still, others offer special “two-for-one all-inclusive fares” that also include airfare, unlimited on-shore excursions, two- or three-night land programs, and even a one-night, pre-cruise hotel stay.

Some cruise lines actually offer special airfare incentives or “two-for-one” flight bundles. One popular cruise line has a promotional offer that includes a maximum of 30 percent off their cruises, free to-and-from airfare for your traveling partner, and as many as five extra benefits such as free shore excursions, an open bar, or specialty dining. You can check the current offers on the individual cruise lines’ websites, on a good travel aggregator website, or via your travel advisor since special incentives often change.

12.  Book your next one while on your current one

If you’re on a cruise and decide you want to go on another one, then be sure to take advantage of your cruise line’s incentives to go ahead and book your next cruise before you disembark. If you book your next cruise before the end of your current one, a number of cruise lines will throw in such perks as onboard credits for your next trip, and even a reduced, refundable deposit on specific stateroom categories. One major cruise line has a program that offers passengers a 50 deposit discount, an early saver rate, an onboard credit, and even a two-category room upgrade depending on the type of cabin you want.

13.  Look for solo traveler benefits

The cruise industry considers traveling singles to be an important market. Some cruise lines even reward solo flyers. A lot of cruise lines will add a “single supplement” surcharge to a solo traveler’s room rate, while other cruise lines offer specific cruises where they skip this charge.

They may also offer discounts on deposits to single travelers and even a more flexible booking policy. Some companies even offer small ship cruises that specifically cater to singles. Larger cruise lines promote their single staterooms on certain ships designed just for single travelers. The charges for these cabins can actually be less than what you could pay per person when traveling with a partner. Other potential perks for solo-sailers might also include free access to specific areas where singles can socialize.

14.  Join a frequent cruiser program

You can earn extra perks when you belong to a company’s loyalty program. The more you set sail with one company, the more incentives, and benefits you receive. Some cruise lines offer booking discounts of up to 10 percent.  

Memberships are generally free and depending on which company you choose you might be automatically enrolled following your first voyage. Discounts could apply to both river and ocean cruises. You may also be invited to onboard cocktail parties. You will also probably be kept up to date on special pricing deals, new ships, and itineraries. With some memberships, the benefits may vary according to level, but they can include discounted laundry service, discounted spa services, free welcoming events, onboard premium offers, and even stateroom upgrades.

15.  Board an older ship

Experts confirm that sailing on an older ship can result in you getting a better deal. It is generally more expensive to take a cruise on new and larger ships. Cruise lines usually update older ships so they often have many of the same features on newer vessels but at a lower price.

16.  Book a cruise during the school year

Cruise rates are generally based on the specific time of the year. They are higher when travelers are more able to travel. Prices spike, for example, during the winter holidays, summer, and spring break.

Sailing in late December can cost you hundreds of dollars more than some time in January. Book your cruise in the off-season, when all the kids are in school. You will save money. 18.  Take shorter cruises

Obviously, you can save money by taking a cruise that is only three, four, or five nights long instead of one that lasts a week or more. Consider a shorter trip to places in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic, Grand Cayman, Mexico, or even Key West, Florida. Cruises out of ports such as Fort Lauderdale and Miami, Florida often include significant discounts and other benefits such as a free balcony upgrade, and some allow children to sail free of charge.

Take in the Ancient Paleolithic Cave Art in France and Spain

Southern France and Northern Spain reportedly have the world’s highest concentration of Paleolithic cave art.  Almost 400 caves in Europe feature art from this particular period.  350 or more are found in these two places.

River tubing is one of the most popular warm-weather activities in riverfront towns across the country. Here are some of the most important tips to know before you go so you can make the most of your tube trip down the river, wherever you choose to take it.

What You Should Know Before You Go Tubing

Use common sense . . .

As we have previously noted in another article, a lot of what you need to know before you go river tubing simply involves using common sense. This is true of any outdoor activity or adventure.

The Weather   

Research the weather before booking or scheduling your event. Check the weather before leaving too. Check on any river conditions that could potentially make your trip unsafe. 

Consider An Organized Excursion

Booking an organized tubing excursion is a good idea. A professional company can map out your trip. They will taxi you to your drop-off point upriver.  

They will provide all safety equipment (such as life jackets) and pre-tubing instructions and advice. The company will also provide the inner tubes.  

If You DIY . . .

If you simply must go with a DIY tubing trip, there are some things you will need to remember. Plan on going with a group of people. Drawing is an obvious danger when one goes river tubing so it is a good idea to have other people with you who can phone for help if need be. Be sure you and everyone in your group wear a good, correctly-sized life jacket every minute you are in the river. This is extremely important if you are taking children, people who can’t swim, or if you are planning or drinking alcohol or using recreational marijuana.

Additionally, you will need to do a lot of homework prior to your trip. You’ll have to research the river you want to go floating down, being sure to check for any risks such as rapids. Since you’ll be launching your tubes from somewhere upstream of your final destination, you’ll also have to plan on having transportation not only to the launch spot but from your final destination to your vehicles at the launch spot.  

Since you will be going with at least one or two other people, you could take two cars and park one at your launch spot and one at your final destination. Mind you, since you’ll be taking all your own equipment including inner tubes you’ll probably need at least one of those vehicles to be a truck/SUV.

What To Take With You When You Go River Tubing

Whether you are going to go out river tubing for just a couple of hours or going to make a day of it, there are several things you should be sure not to forget:

Dress

Wear a swimsuit and a tee-shirt too. You’ll also need some type of water shoes. (Old sneakers work well here.) You will also want cheap sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Top off your outfit with an appropriately-sized life jacket.  

Additional Supplies

You will also want to pack snacks, drinking water, sunscreen, at least one cell phone, driver’s licenses, and/or ID and money in a waterproof bag. You should also have at least one cooler for your water and any other beverages or food you wish to keep cold. You’ll also need to pack a towel, a dry pair of shoes, a change of clothing, and even a pair of socks so that you can change into a dry outfit after your ride. (No point in driving/riding home in wet clothing.)

You should also take a small first aid kit in case someone gets bitten by some annoying bug or cut by a sharp rock or piece of driftwood. If you have a waterproof radio, take that along too so you can listen to music, sports, or even the local news while you float down the river.  

Again, remember that if you do not go river tubing through an outfitter, you will also have to bring your own inner tubes too. While some do-it-yourself tubers have used pool floats, these things are apt to easily pop and can leave the user tubeless for the remainder of the journey. If you insist on going the DIY route, purchase some sturdy, reliable inner tubes.  

Additionally, an extra tube or two for your cooler and other supplies is also a great idea. Some outfitters might even provide you with rope if you wish to tie your tubes together. Bring your own rope and a pocket knife in case you want to tie the tubes together but are not provided with any rope.

Now, you’re ready to have some fun! Relax, and enjoy your lazy float down the river, and be sure to keep your life jacket on every second you’re in the water so you stay safe. 1. Cozumel, Mexico

If you like good weather and great prices, the best time to visit is between late March and June. You can spend all day on a Cozumel beach for free.  If you’d rather swim in a pool, buy a day pass at a local luxury resort.  You can use the pool and sun chairs and don’t have to pay to sleep there.  You can pick up a cheap souvenir and a bite to eat at the local mercado – a little market in the local plaza.

2. Dominican Republic

Visit the Dominican Republic from April through June and enjoy warm weather and discounted rates of up to 50 percent on flights and accommodations.   Avoid Punta Cana and Santo Domingo.  Instead, avoid the beaten path and stay in Bahia de las Aguilas or Samana.  In a lot of places, staying at an all-inclusive resort will save you money because there’s a 16 percent government tax and even a 10 percent service charge added to the check at many of the local restaurants.  

3. Palawan, Philippines
