1. Playa del Amor, Baja California Sur

Travelers must brave a dusty road that departs from Federal Highway 200 in the small town of El Tuito to get to the beach. Nearly seven miles of largely undeveloped sand, a few local lodging and dining options, and one of Jalisco’s largest sea turtle protection camps, which has led the way in research and conservation initiatives there since 2005, are found there. 15. Playa La Punta, Oaxaca

Long known as a hippie haven, this area of town is known for its dustier roads, laid-back eateries, and abundance of hostels. However, with more and more design-forward boutique hotels and even a brand-new outdoor food court, its reputation is evolving. This beach in Zihua is just outside of town close to the airport. We get major Robinson Crusoe vibes from this seemingly endless stretch of sparsely populated beach, which also happens to be the location of some of the most spectacular sunsets we’ve ever witnessed. 18. Costalegre, Jalisco

Costalegre is a large section of coast in southern Jalisco, close to the state of Colima’s border, and is much more than just a single beach. Every beach in the area is deserving of this list due to the area’s stunningly untamed beauty. Today, a lot of travelers visit this region of the state, south of Puerto Vallarta, to stay at opulent resort communities like Cuixmala and Careyes.  

Veteran visitors can confirm the beauty and overall list-worthiness of this place. Despite having two international airports on either side of it, it is isolated and largely unexplored. However, this region of Mexico may soon be operating at a Los Cabos level of luxury thanks to the promise of a new airport, better roads, and more upscale accommodations.

19. Playa Cerritos, Baja California Sur

Todos Santos should be on your radar if it isn’t already. The Pacific Coast town has long been a haven for surfers and artists. It is located less than an hour’s drive north of Los Cabos. 

You can anticipate finding unique shops, art galleries, and a crowd enjoying oysters and champagne. Todos Santos has always been a place where you can pick your own adventure, and it remains so today. Playa Cerritos, the most well-known beach in the region, has long been a mecca for surfers. It’s also one of the few Pacific beaches in Baja that is completely safe for swimming. 20. Playa Canalán, Nayarit

21. The Lagunas de Chacahua, Oaxaca

To reach this beach, you’ll need to put in a little extra effort. Ah, but it is well worth the effort. One of the most remote and idyllic beaches in all of Mexico is reached by water taxi from Puerto Escondido via the Lagunas de Chacahua National Park. 

On the northern side of the inlet where Chacahua Lagoon empties into the Pacific Ocean, there is a beautiful beach. Surfers from all over the world, including Australia, swarm the beach huts in search of the ideal waves. In this region of Mexico, “lights out” is also taken seriously.  There is little pollution, so you can really see the stars.

Note: Expect minimal unnecessary amenities. In general, the best time to visit these beaches in Mexico is reportedly between December and April.  That’s when the weather is sunny and dry.

What Is A Cenote?

But wait! What exactly is a cenote? A cenote is a natural sinkhole or pit that was created by the complete collapse of limestone bedrock that causes the exposure of groundwater. The ancient Mayans once revered them as sacred well. Today, cenotes are magnets for adventurers, explorers, and tourists alike.

The Yucatan, Limestone and Cenotes

The Yucatan Peninsula’s bedrock is mostly soluble limestone. The limestone eventually dissolves once exposed to seeping water for a long time. In the resulting karstic terrain, the permeable bedrock doesn’t permit water to collect above ground as lakes or rivers. 

Alternatively, rainwater filters underground through the porous rock and gathers subsurface where the erosion process continues. Sometimes the bedrock weakens and collapses to expose a cave or a cenote. Mind you, there are different kinds of cenotes too.

Some cenotes are shallow and wide, while others are deep shafts filled with water with totally vertical walls, while others are shallow but wide. Still, other cenotes are partially open with some of the water out of sight in a hidden cavern. There are also cavernous cenotes that are only accessible via tunnels or openings in the ceiling.

They are even more complicated underground. Cenotes allow explorers to access prodigious networks of relatively unexplored systems of caves. Along the Caribbean coast they broaden horizontally, while in northwest Yucatan, they’re usually on a vertical plane.

If you’re in Tulum, visit the Grand Cenote. From there you can access the well-known Sistema Sac Actun. It is the world’s second-largest cave system stretching out 335 kilometers. You can find two of the five officially “longest cave systems” in the state of Quintana Roo.

Modern-day researchers have utilized technology to prove a connection between cenotes and the fate of the dinosaurs. Aerial mapping indicated there is a circular to the jungle cenotes. This ring actually marks the rim of a crater caused by a massive meteorite. It dates back 66 million years, somewhere between the Cretaceous and Paleogene Ages.

The Historical Significance

The word “cenote” has its roots in the ancient Yucatec Mayan word “dzonot” which means “well” in English. Before the creation of today’s modern technology, the people who lived there knew the significance of these numerous freshwater sinkholes. Indeed, The ancient Mayans were reported to be one of the Mesoamerican continent’s “most advanced indigenous civilizations.”  

They relocated to the Yucatan sometime between 500 BCE and 250 CE. The Yucatan was generally devoid of lakes and rivers. Thus, cenotes were their source of fresh water.

The Mayans built a sophisticated society around cenotes as the sheer number of them were able to sustain sizable settlements. Between 300 and 900 CE, the largest cities they built, like Uxmal and Chichen Itza, were founded close to several cenotes. Mayapan, another example, was located roughly 100 kilometers west of the city of Chichen Itza. Its city walls contained over 40 cenotes that provided fresh water for as many as 17,000 residents.

Not only were cenotes vital for survival but they were also a significant part of the civilization’s religious belief system. The Mayans thought cenotes were sacred and were also an actual gateway to the underworld or Xibalba. Chaacc, the god of rain, supposedly lived at the bottom of the wells.

Mayans also held ceremonies and performed rituals at sacred cenotes praying for good groups and rainfall. The most well-known one is aptly named the Sacred Cenote located close to Chichen Itza, in the northwest region of the peninsula. Modern-day archaeologists have discovered pottery, and gold and jade artifacts.  

They even found human remains within its depths with ancient injuries that serve as evidence of human sacrifice. Of course, present-day Mayan culture no longer includes human sacrifices. Nevertheless, many of the ancient Mayan descendants reportedly continue to “pay their respects” to the old mythical residents of the cenotes.

Top Three Cenotes And A Bonus

Today cenotes are a very popular destination for adventurers, explorers, and travelers as well. Depending on which cenote you choose to visit, you can go diving, snorkeling, and swimming too. The Cenote known as Ik-Kil is perhaps one of the most amazing open cenotes in Mexico.

It is about three kilometers out of Chichen Itza. It has sheer vertical walls that are usually lined with flowers and various vines and opens to crystal-clear azure water that is a minimum of 40 meters deep. It’s populated by catfish.

Veteran visitors confirm it is an exceptional place for snorkeling and swimming. There is an admission charge but the site features several different amenities. They include cabins, a restaurant, and restrooms.

Located near Tulum, the Grand Cenote is a partially open cenote that is recommended for all ages and levels of snorkelers and swimmers. This cenote features docks for sunbathing, partially submerged tunnels that join open-air areas, and interesting underwater limestone formations fit for exploring.

You may see bats hanging from the natural ceiling. It’s okay. They simply make the place more exotic. Most importantly, this cenote offers adventurous types easy access to the second-largest cave system in the world. Thus, it’s a popular place with divers.

You’ll find Cenote Dos Ojos, “Two Eyes” in English, between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. This is another noteworthy place for snorkeling. Witness the sunlight piercing the crystal turquoise water and lighting up the stalagmites rising from the depths. From here you can also access a mysterious flooded underwater system of caves that spans 80+ kilometers. This too is a popular place for diving.

Cenote Oxmal is situated in the area of Valladolid. It’s the least-known, beautiful cenote and includes few amenities but has a very low admission fee. The water here is roughly 67 meters deep. Therefore, veteran visitors recommend that you “head for the surface level” and dive into the water from a height of between 18 and 22 meters.

1. Wiebbe Hayes Stone Fort, Australia

Now almost 50 members of the Acoma tribe live in “Sky City.”  It’s thus named because it seems to be precariously perched atop a 367-foot mesa. They have no smartphones, no electricity or running water and live as their ancestors did.

4. Cuicuilco, Mexico

This ancient ceremonial center and archaeological site is located on the shore of well-known Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico, in famous Mexico City. The moss-covered lava blocks and stones of this temple are in danger of being reclaimed by the earth as the weeds and green grass peeking out between the stones indicates. The Cuicuilco Pyramid harkens back to 2000 BC. (Cuicuilco is Nahuatl for “place of songs.”) The residents of this place were the first to record the sun’s movements, thus initiating the creation of the first calendar.

5. Borchgrevink’s Hut, Antarctica

This structure is noteworthy for both its significant place in the exploration of this continent and because it was the very first man-made structure built here. Because of the strong offshore winds and heavy surf Cape Adare is one of the most inhospitable landing sites in Antarctica. It was in 1899 that Norwegian Commander Carsten Borchgrevink erected two huts so that he and his team could be the first expedition to spend the night in Antarctica. Visitors can still see the original huts and their remaining contents there today.

6. Pyramid of Djoser, Egypt

Also known as the Step Pyramid, this pyramid is located in the ancient Saqqara necropolis, northwest of Memphis. It predates the world-famous Great Pyramid of Giza by several hundred years. It’s also the planet’s “oldest still-standing stone building.”

The man-made pyramid was constructed between 2667 and 2648 BC for the Egyptian pharaoh Djoser who ruled during the nation’s third dynasty. This step pyramid has a total of six layers that have been restored over a period of 14 years. Finally open to the public, travelers can now wander through the pyramid.

7. Caral-Supe, Peru

The sacred city of Caral-Supe (or simply Caral) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 150-acre plot of homes, plazas, and pyramids is located on an arid desert terrace that overlooks the valley of the Supe River. Archaeologists unearthed a reed carrying bag that dates back to the Late Archaic period which started in 3000 BC.

Therefore, it’s the Americas’ oldest civilization, and one of the oldest on the planet. The previously-mentioned river determines how easily travelers can get to this place according to the country’s wet or dry season.

8. Dholavira, India

This archaeological site is situated at Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District, in Gujarat in India. It’s a man-made Harappan city isolated from modern-day civilization by the well-known salt plains of Rann of Kachchh. It was rediscovered in 1956.

It’s named after a contemporary village only 1 kilometer to the south. Researchers agree this ancient locale was probably occupied from 2650 BC to 1450 BC. The defensive fortifications, grid-like streets, and advanced drainage systems might very well be one of the first examples of early city planning.

9. Göbekli Tepe, Turkey

Located in Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia Region, this archaeological site is roughly 12 kilometers or seven miles away from Şanlıurfa. Experts say this is the first man-made temple on the planet. First discovered some time in the 1960s, it was originally dismissed as being little more than a medieval cemetery.  In 1994, a German archaeologist named Klaus Schmidt visited this place and found that it went all the way back to 9500 BC. There are some questions that may never be answered. Even today, archaeologists and other researchers are unable to solve the mysteries left behind by some previous people. Indeed, here are 22 mysterious monuments from ancient civilizations.

The Pyramids of Giza

Located in Cairo, Egyptologists still can only speculate about this 4,500-year-old burial complex. How could ancient architects assemble these specific structures as high as 149 meters (459 feet)? How could millions of stone blocks weighing several tons even be moved several kilometers in the first place? How the builders could be so precise with such rudimentary tools remains a mystery to this day.

Pyramids

The ancient Egyptians built pyramids. But how did pyramids come to be built in both Mexico and Japan as well? How did people with such limited resources erect such impressive structures?
Was there once an internationally-known architectural method about which we now know nothing? Many theories have been posed and not all are scientific. Could they be the product of alien activity or a peculiar paranormal phenomenon?

Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan is just northeast of Mexico City. Historians remain uncertain as to who built this 9.7-square-mile (25-square-kilometer) site. Scientists proved it the Aztecs did not construct this 2,000-year-old location.
They only “inherited” it. Additionally, Hugh Harleston, an American engineer, discovered that Teotihuacan is actually a model of our own solar system. The various buildings proportionally correspond to the size and position of the planets.

Tiwanaku

Located on a high-altitude plain in Bolivia, this pre-Columbian city is over 1,000 years old. Some believe it to be between 4,000 and 12,000 years old. Regardless of its age, researchers agree that it could be one of the world’s oldest cities. The impressive details of the stonework indicate that this was once the home of people who were ahead of their time.

Tiermes

Found in Spain’s Castile-León region, Tiermes is nearly entirely carved in the rock there. The ruins include city gates, a forum, homes, and an impressive aqueduct system. Researchers do not yet know for sure who built this city or even when. They do know that the Romans aided in the city’s economic development and that the Celtiberians, the Visigoths, and the Moors all passed through here.

Petra

Although this city was erected in the fourth century BC, this once important trading center in Jordan was forgotten before the eighth century AD. In 1812, it was rediscovered and deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site. Researchers still have questions. How were the inhabitants able to carve the entire town from the rock? How were they even able to have enough water in one of the world’s most arid areas?

Great Zimbabwe

Ensconced in the hills of southeastern Zimbabwe, this 2.7 square-mile (7 square-kilometer) ancient trade center was built by the Shona people sometime between the 11th and 15th centuries. In 1871 it was rediscovered by a group of European explorers. Some researchers theorize this was once the location of the biblical, gold-rich King Solomon’s Mines. Unfortunately, this theory quickly led to the ruins being pillaged.

Temples of Malta

Found in the famous Maltese archipelago, the megalithic temples of Malta are a treasure. The islands of Gozo and Malta include some of the planet’s oldest prehistoric architectural structures. These temples date back to somewhere between 4000 and 2500 BC. They are not only significantly elaborate in their design but are reportedly “advanced technical achievements” for that time period. They are included on the official UNESCO World Heritage list.

Newgrange

Situated north of Dublin, Ireland, the imposing Newgrange passage tomb is over 5,000 years old. It has a diameter of 2890 feet (85 meters). If you’re there close to the winter solstice, visit before sunrise. Watch as the sunlight passes through the opening on the mound and moves up the lengthy passage into the burial chamber. Witness the perfect alignment of the sunrise and the monument.

Stonehenge

The prehistoric rocks of Stonehenge, England, are world-famous. Some sources estimate that this place was actually used between 3700 and 1600 BC. Declared an official UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986, this architecturally sophisticated circle of stones remains a mystery. No one fully understands the significance of the location. Still, the mysterious monument reveals evidence of both Bronze and Neolithic Age mortuary and ceremonial practices.

The Stone Circles of Avebury

The famous Neolithic stone circles of Avebury in southwest England can be found 18.5 miles (nearly 30 kilometers) north of the famous Stonehenge in Wiltshire. They are reported to be the world’s largest prehistoric stone circles and important to contemporary pagans. UNESCO states that this huge henge indicates “the outstanding engineering skills which were used to create masterpieces of earthen and megalithic architecture.”

Silbury Hill

Not far from the above-mentioned stone circles of Avebury, is Silbury Hill. At 131 feet (40 meters) high, Silbury Hill is Europe’s largest prehistoric mound. While the actual purpose of the mound is still unclear, it was built roughly between 2400 and 2300 BC. They built it in 15 distinct phases. Archaeologists think the builders were focused not on the final shape but instead on their ritual of construction.

Glastonbury Tor

The Tor overlooks Glastonbury, in England. It is essentially a conical hill that is topped by an ancient roofless tower. The tower’s actually the vestige of a church from the 1300s erected on the actual ruins of a previous church. Some historians believe this may have been the myth-enshrouded Avalon where King Arthur’s sword, the fabled Excalibur, was forged. Archaeologists know this site was inhabited long before the historic Middle Ages.

The Carnac Stones

Located in Brittany, France, the mysterious exceptionally dense Carnac stones are almost 6,000 years old. More specifically, this monument consists of over 3,000 prehistoric stones that were carved from local granite and stood up by pre-Celtic residents. Most are in Carnac, but others are technically in La Trinité-sur-Mer. Why would thousands of stones have been lined up in descending size across 2,6 miles (almost 4 kilometers)?

The Externsteine of the Teutoburg Forest

The famous Teutoburg Forest is found in Germany. It is here that one can discover an important part of old Germanic history. Here you can see the Externsteine which is a group of standing sandstone pillars formed many years ago. Some researchers think this place was a solar observatory and others believe it to be a pagan place of worship.

The Giants of Easter Island

These mysterious monuments are found on a remote island off the beautiful coast of Chile. The residents of Easter Island created the huge stone figures and ceremonial platforms between the 10th and the 16th century. The massive busts are known as moai. UNESCO notes that there are about 900. To this day, researchers wonder about their significance, how they were created and how they were moved.

Uluru

The sandstone monolith is in Australia. It is 22,000 years old and overlooks a rugged plain. This 1,148-foot (350-meter) rock is said by veteran visitors to be exceptionally beautiful at sunset when it suddenly has a crimson glow. The Indigenous population considers the rock to be sacred and thus visitors are asked to not climb on it.

Mount Tai

According to UNESCO Mount Tai “was the object of an imperial cult for nearly 2,000 years” and “symbolizes ancient Chinese civilizations and beliefs.” Perhaps this is why it is one of the five mountains China deems to be sacred. The mountain’s ecosystem remains well-balanced despite the fact that millions of visitors climb 4,921 feet (1,500 meters) annually to reach the summit.

Notre-Dame de Paris

The world-renowned medieval Catholic Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in France has an air of mystery to it that has been a source of inspiration for animation, novels, songs and more. It recently celebrated its 850th anniversary and even weathered a major fire. Some historians still wonder about the symbolism of the numerous carved stone sculptures along its famous façade.

Mausoleum of the Qin Emperor

It was here near the city of Xi’an, China in 1974 when the famous army of terra-cotta warriors was discovered. They date back to 210 BC when they were created to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di, in the afterlife. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, this tomb makes one wonder if each terra-cotta warrior actually represents a real soldier.

The Anasazi Cliff Dwellings

In the southwestern US between the first century BC and 15th century AD, the Native American Anasazi constructed their dwellings in the sides of cliffs. Archaeologists find the precarious location intriguing and remain uncertain as to why the ancient Anasazi suddenly abandoned their homes. Was it a drought, environmental degradation, or some other danger?

The Yonaguni Monument

Just 98 feet (30 meters) off the undersea coast of Japan’s Yonaguni Island, is the underwater pyramid.
