1. Wiebbe Hayes Stone Fort, Australia

There’s little more than a stack of coral and limestone blocks remaining of Australia’s oldest structure. Found on West Wallabi Island, it dates back to 1629. What’s most fascinating is the history here.

2. Fortaleza Ozama, Dominican Republic

Famous explorer Christopher Columbus was once a prisoner here at this fort completed in 1508. It is located at the official entrance to Santo Domingo’s Ciudad Colonial. The fortress overlooks its namesake, the Ozama River.

It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will travel back through the mists of time after the first stone was set in 1502. Explore all the various chambers, dungeons, and tunnels that remain of this Spanish castle-like fort. Thus, it’s officially the very first “permanent military structure” anywhere in the Americas.

3. Acoma Pueblo, USA

Situated in Albuquerque,  New Mexico and originally thought to have been founded in 1150, this historic pueblo was designated to be the “oldest continuously inhabited community” in the USA. It has, however, been the subject of more recent excavations that lend credence to the possibility it could date back even earlier. Now almost 50 members of the Acoma tribe live in “Sky City.”  It’s thus named because it seems to be precariously perched atop a 367-foot mesa. They have no smartphones, no electricity or running water and live as their ancestors did.

4. Cuicuilco, Mexico

This ancient ceremonial center and archaeological site is located on the shore of well-known Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico, in famous Mexico City. The moss-covered lava blocks and stones of this temple are in danger of being reclaimed by the earth as the weeds and green grass peeking out between the stones indicates. The Cuicuilco Pyramid harkens back to 2000 BC. (Cuicuilco is Nahuatl for “place of songs.”) The residents of this place were the first to record the sun’s movements, thus initiating the creation of the first calendar.

5. Borchgrevink’s Hut, Antarctica

This structure is noteworthy for both its significant place in the exploration of this continent and because it was the very first man-made structure built here. Because of the strong offshore winds and heavy surf Cape Adare is one of the most inhospitable landing sites in Antarctica. It was in 1899 that Norwegian Commander Carsten Borchgrevink erected two huts so that he and his team could be the first expedition to spend the night in Antarctica. Visitors can still see the original huts and their remaining contents there today.

6. Pyramid of Djoser, Egypt

Also known as the Step Pyramid, this pyramid is located in the ancient Saqqara necropolis, northwest of Memphis. It predates the world-famous Great Pyramid of Giza by several hundred years. It’s also the planet’s “oldest still-standing stone building.”

The man-made pyramid was constructed between 2667 and 2648 BC for the Egyptian pharaoh Djoser who ruled during the nation’s third dynasty. This step pyramid has a total of six layers that have been restored over a period of 14 years. Finally open to the public, travelers can now wander through the pyramid.

7. Caral-Supe, Peru

The sacred city of Caral-Supe (or simply Caral) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 150-acre plot of homes, plazas, and pyramids is located on an arid desert terrace that overlooks the valley of the Supe River. Archaeologists unearthed a reed carrying bag that dates back to the Late Archaic period which started in 3000 BC.

Therefore, it’s the Americas’ oldest civilization, and one of the oldest on the planet. The previously-mentioned river determines how easily travelers can get to this place according to the country’s wet or dry season.

8. Dholavira, India

This archaeological site is situated at Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District, in Gujarat in India. It’s a man-made Harappan city isolated from modern-day civilization by the well-known salt plains of Rann of Kachchh. It was rediscovered in 1956.

It’s named after a contemporary village only 1 kilometer to the south. Researchers agree this ancient locale was probably occupied from 2650 BC to 1450 BC. The defensive fortifications, grid-like streets, and advanced drainage systems might very well be one of the first examples of early city planning.

9. Göbekli Tepe, Turkey

Located in Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia Region, this archaeological site is roughly 12 kilometers or seven miles away from Şanlıurfa. Experts say this is the first man-made temple on the planet. First discovered some time in the 1960s, it was originally dismissed as being little more than a medieval cemetery.  In 1994, a German archaeologist named Klaus Schmidt visited this place and found that it went all the way back to 9500 BC. It actually predated metal tools or pottery. That makes these huge intricate carved stones even more marvelous.

10. Tel es-Sultan, Palestine

Also known as Ancient Jericho or Tel Jericho, this is the location of biblical and ancient Jericho. Ensconced in the well-known plain of Palestine’s Jordan Valley, it is now a UNESCO-nominated archaeological site. Remains here date back to 9000 BC.

Researchers report it was first inhabited in the 10th millennium BCE. This place, known to some as “the oldest town in the world”, played an important role in Levantine archaeological history. It’s also known to be the longest continuously inhabited city on the planet. You can tour the ruins on foot or via bicycle.

Even today there are many incredible natural events and mind-blowing, mysterious sights for which the world’s scientists cannot offer any explanation. Most stunning events are actually quickly explained once researched. There are times though when even modern science is unable to provide any specific answers as to why or how something happens.

That’s exactly what makes our world so exciting albeit sometimes perplexing. As this goes to press the following 10 occurrences have yet to be adequately explained by science. Read on and see if you are able to come up with any explanation for these mysterious natural phenomena that scientists cannot explain.

1. The Morning Glory Clouds

The aptly-named Morning Glory Clouds is a mesmerizing mystery. These particular clouds are tube-shaped and quite long. In fact, they can stretch across the sky for literally hundreds of miles.

These clouds are reported to be found mainly in the sky above Australia when they transition from their dry season to their wet season. The local aboriginals believe that the appearance of these clouds is an omen that foretells an increase in the bird population.

Other than that theory, scientists have yet to conclusively prove exactly how they are formed.

2. Star Jelly

The strange gelatinous substance pictured here has confused the world’s scientists for years. It is a weird translucent material that is generally found on trees and grass.

Scientists have been studying it but they have yet to conclude what it actually is. There are some scientists that have a theory that this substance is the result of frog eggs expanding after being exposed to too much moisture but as they eventually discovered the gelatin does not have any animal or even plant DNA in it.

3. The Floating City

The date was April 21, 2017. The location was Jieyang, China. It was here that dozens of Chinese were stunned as they stared into the sky at what looked like an actual “floating city” high in the sky over their heads.

Six years earlier, the same floating cities were officially recorded in five different places across the country. There is one popular theory for this phenomenon. During the rare occurrence called Fata Morgana light goes through heat waves and creates a duplicating effect. Scientists have yet to officially confirm this at press time.

4. Tabby’s Star

This star was named after the person who discovered it, Tabetha Boyajian. Tabby’s Star is but one of the 150,000 stars that can be seen with the Kepler telescope. What makes this particular star unique is that the light from it often dulls by as much as 20 percent.

This is a significantly higher percentage than any other star on record. Thus far, scientists only have theories for why this is. Theories include alien life, a significant buildup of debris and dust, and the passing of planets.

5. Spider Rain

This strange occurrence also still has scientists baffled. For no discernible reason, flightless creatures will simply rain down from the sky. This has thus far included worms, frogs, and spiders.

At present the most popular theory researchers have come up with is that tornadoes or waterspouts actually lift and relocate literally thousands of these various creatures and then drop or shower them down on any and all nearby cities. These events have yet to be witnessed in person by any number of scientists, though.

6. A Bloody Sky

It was the month of April 2016. It was then that the residents of Chalchuapa, El Salvador, were witness to a blood red sky over them. It lasted for only a few brief minutes before then transforming into a pinkish color.

A number of deeply religious locals took it to be an omen that signified the end of the world. One popular theory is that it may have been a reflection of stubble fires that had been started by the local sugarcane farmers. Nevertheless, to this day no one really is certain.

7. The Great Attractor

Travel back through the mists of time with us to a decade called the (19) the 70s. It was then that NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) began studying an unusual force between 150 and 250 million light years away from our planet. This force was drawing the entire Milky Way galaxy and neighboring galaxies towards it. Scientists christened this force “The Great Attractor.” They have yet to explain what causes this attraction or how it began.

8. The Taos Hum

Taos is a town in the well-known Sangre de Cristo Mountains in north-central New Mexico in the US. It is a popular liberal arts community as well as the home of some celebrities. It is also famous for a phenomenon known as the “Taos Hum.”

This unique noise is a sound that can actually be heard by roughly two percent of the population of Taos. Oddly, every local describes the sound differently. While even special audio recording equipment has not yet been able to actually record it, the locals who have heard it still insist it is real.

9. The Tunguska Event

The date is June 30, 1908. It was at a spot close to the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Siberia, that a huge fireball blew up just six kilometers above the planet’s surface. The resulting shockwave cleared the forests for miles around and an unknown number of animals were killed as well. Many researchers think the explosion was a small asteroid that exploded prior to striking the ground. Unfortunately, because there was no resulting crater, there was nothing for the scientists to analyze.

10. Japanese Atlantis

Beneath the waves of Yonaguni Jima, Japan, there are gigantic stones that look like the Aztec or Egyptian pyramids. Scientists have determined that these large rocks have been under the sea for approximately 2,000 years. Researchers believe that these rock shapes are the remnants of an ancient civilization that is almost 5,000 years old. They believe that these rocks fell into the water as a result of some unknown seismic event. While this theory is accepted, it has yet to be proven.

Found in Scott County in the Jefferson National Forest, the Little Stoney National Recreation Trail area serves as a base to the popular Upper Little Stoney Falls which is accessible only via the recreation trail. The water in the pool is shallow enough for everyone.

The Powder Hole, Pennsylvania

1. Ride on the world’s longest aerial tram: the Sandia Peak Tramway. If you do nothing else while in Albuquerque, do not miss this high-flying experience. The Sandia mountain range is the
highlight of anyone’s visit to this New Mexico town. It’s also a veritable compass for those living in the city. These splendorous peaks are difficult to miss seeing from anywhere in town! When you look in the direction of the Sandias, you know you’re looking eastward. The Tramway pulls you 10,378 miles up to the Sandia Peak. During the 15-minute ride in the glass enclosed tram, you have a panoramic view of the city of Albuquerque and the Rio Grande Valley, including parts of Santa Fe. Once you reach the peak, the view is even more incredible. There is a restaurant at the top where you can linger and enjoy the sunset from nearly 3 miles up. You can also opt to hike up or down on the marked trails or even ski in the winter.

2. Spend some time in Historic Old Town. This section of the city is where Albuquerque’s original settlers lived. There is a vibrant central plaza that is surrounded by two square blocks containing dozens of art galleries, restaurants, and shops on quaint cobblestone and brick streets. Near the plaza is the San Felipe de Neri Church, the city’s oldest building, dating back to 1793. It is a tourist favorite for its architectural beauty and rich history. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is also in Old Town. New Mexico’s 19 pueblos are represented here, showcasing their history, culture and artwork. There are often native dances performed, and a gift shop and restaurant is on site. This is a wonderful place to learn about all 19 Indian Pueblos before you decide to visit one in person.

3. Come during the International Balloon Fiesta. This extravaganza is held every year beginning in the first week of October. Over the course of a week, thousands of people visit the city to view hundreds of hot air balloons rising silently upwards as sunrise nears and then again, after sunset. This is the photo opportunity of a lifetime! The Fiesta also sponsors other events within the confines of the ballooning grounds. Music, chainsaw-carving competitions, balloon rides, a balloon museum plus much, much more is going on during the week-long festival. People from around the world come to Albuquerque to witness or take part in the balloons’ mass ascensions.

4. Get your kicks on Route 66. Yes, the original Route 66 is alive and kicking in Albuquerque. This was once the only paved road, dating back to the 1930s, which connected Chicago to Los Angeles. During its heyday, post-World War II, when many Americans owned cars, Route 66 was the way to travel cross-country. Businesses offering unusual side-trips for travelers popped up along the route, including cheaply priced motels and diners with eye-catching neon signs. Today, sections of Route 66 in Albuquerque run through the Nob Hill and Highland neighborhoods of town. The road has been renamed East Central Ave., but the original signs still exist, as do some of those neon-lit motels and restaurants.

5. Take a walking, bus, or trolley tour. This is perhaps the best way to see Albuquerque and get both a feel for the layout of the town and its history. You will also find creepy ghost tours
available and a wildly popular in-depth tour of the locations in town where the television show Breaking Bad was filmed.

6. Visit the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park. The park is a perfect antidote to city life, with interpretive trails for hikers and birdwatchers, and an expansive biking trail. There are nearly 300 acres of riverside forest and meadows. There is also a nature museum and staff members who truly know their history, both current and original, of the Rio Grande that flows from Colorado to the Gulf of Mexico.

7. Take the kids to the ABQ Biopark Aquarium. This is a triple-play destination, with an aquarium, zoo, and botanical garden all in one. You can visit each site via a trail line that connects them. The aquarium boasts a 285-gallon tank of seawater that includes sharks, sea turtles and other ocean life.

8. Check out the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. If you want to see where Bill Gates worked before he went on to become the developer of Microsoft, this is the place to
see. This spot is where the world’s first personal computer was made and sold. Two permanent exhibits include Start Up Albuquerque and the Personal Computer Revolution. New Mexico’s
natural history in the form of gigantic dinosaur skeletons dating back thousands of years is exhibited here, also.
