There is something uniquely beautiful about Utah’s Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This remote area is one of those places that encourage travelers to occasionally travel off the well-worn path. This is one of those noteworthy travel destinations that does not always rate high on anyone’s bucket list but is certainly worth inclusion.

For those not in the know, President Bill Clinton declared this place an official national monument in 1996 via an actual Presidential Proclamation. It is called Grand Staircase-Escalante because it is home to a number of plateaus, including the 9000-foot tall Kaiparowits plateau, which descends from popular Bryce Canyon National Park south to the world-famous Grand Canyon. You can explore the various canyons of the Escalante via different drives and stunning slot canyons as well. Some Scenic Drives

1. Cruise Highway 12

Why not enjoy a scenic drive on your way to Grand Staircase? Cruise beautiful Hwy 12. Be prepared for multiple stops. Because as you drive down this highway, remember that there are a number of different great viewpoints where you can stop and take in the views.

2. Hike the Burr Trail into Capitol Reef

Veteran visitors suggest driving into Capitol Reef National Park’s back entrance. Veteran visitors report that the traffic is surprisingly sparse. You can very well be out cruising around a beautiful spot all alone.

Additionally, there is an enjoyable switchback that you drive down in order to reach Capitol Reef’s water-pocket fold area. It might be important to note that a section of this road is, as this goes to press, only gravel. Allow yourself a good two hours for this particular drive.

3. Drive Notom Road

Also referred to as “Norton” Road by some travelers and travel bloggers, this is another option. Reported to be a scenic backway, you wouldn’t want to drive it in a sports car. While the views can’t be disputed, you will be surrendering some comfort by taking this route. If you don’t mind that then you probably have a four-wheel drive vehicle with decent clearance and should be able to travel this road. Check on weather conditions and road conditions prior to taking it though as you will otherwise be dealing with small sand drifts along with the loose graveled sections.

4. Take Hell’s Backbone Scenic Byway

Hell’s Backbone Road is generally slotted into the top 10 things to do here. Mind you, it sometimes receives mixed reviews from those who have been on it. The highlight here is the Hell’s Backbone Bridge. 

There’s a little pullout area where you can park your vehicle, sit and rest and take in the scenery. You will also pass Calf Creek Falls where you can stop and play in the water. There are those who didn’t enjoy driving through the forest and don’t consider trees a part of the scenery and there are no services.  

Even they, however, admit once you actually arrive at the top by the previously-mentioned bridge it is undeniably beautiful. You can see to well-known Bryce and beyond. To be fair, it can be windy so if driving while it’s windy out is an issue for you, check the weather prior to taking this two-hour drive.

5. Hike Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch

In order to complete this hike you need to drive about 45 minutes on a reportedly rough road. Surprisingly, when you get to the actual trailhead there’s a nice, big parking lot. Permits are $6.00 per person at press time.

They can be purchased ahead of time, paid for online, or paid by scanning a barcode right there. You will need to complete a form that must be clearly displayed on your dashboard. The 5.6-mile out-and-back hike may take longer than you expect as the hiking trail typically has a lot of rocks on it.

As is often the case, the canyon itself is cooler and that makes it more comfortable for hiking. You can download the trail route on All Trails and even print it out if you are concerned about your signal. As often suggested, dress in layers and don’t hike there if rain is expected.

6. The Calf Creek Falls Hike

This six-mile hike is rated moderately strenuous and some hikers have called it unexpectedly amazing. On this hike, you will be able to see some huge petroglyphs on the mountain there. Ah, but the real highlight of this specific hike is the waterfall at the trail’s end.

Even if you know it’s there, it just isn’t what you expect to see in a desert. It’s a beautiful waterfall that is 126 feet tall. There’s an attractive little beach area there as well. You can swim here as well. So, plan to do this hike when it’s nice and warm.

7. The Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyon Hike

Your route to the trailhead might not be smooth so check with park officials for road conditions and recommendations. Some folks choose to do it the hard way and then complain about it. The trailhead parking lot might not look like much either but remember this is about the hike and not the drive to the starting point.

The canyon itself is unique and beautiful and hiking through it is the best way to experience that. It is an adventurous experience as you hike, shimmy, scramble, climb up and climb down on this terrific trek. You may find it odd, but in one way this hike is more kid-friendly than adult friendly as there are places where grown adults have to struggle a bit to fit through some of the tight spots here.

If you’re feeling energetic and have the time, keep going and hike to Spider Canyon. Mind you, you will need to be able to physically squeeze through 12-inch openings in the rock! There are also other challenging crevices and while you will need the essentials bulky backpacks will make it tricky, to say the least.  

You will have to hike roughly half a mile or so back to the trailhead. Part of it is uphill too. It might be under five miles, but it is a challenge.

8. The Zebra Slot Canyon Hike

The road to the trailhead is a bumpy dirt road but you’ll be on it for under 15 minutes. This hike is under five miles in total. This is a very short but gorgeous canyon.

This hike is a little over five miles out and back with an elevation gain of 300 feet as you must hike uphill on the way back to the trailhead. The slots here are only reportedly about 200 yards in length. There are areas here that are only about 10 inches in width and climbing is required.  

You can download the AllTrails map for this hike on your smartphone. You might want to print it out as well. In fact, having a copy of the map for every member of your hiking party is always a good idea. 

As always, you should check on weather conditions prior to heading out on your hike. In fact, experienced hikers even phone the ranger station here to ensure that there is not too much rainwater in the canyon and to ensure there is no approaching storm. Always be prepared.

9. The Coyote Gulch Hike

Are you in the mood for a great backcountry adventure? If so, consider hiking the Coyote Gulch Trail. This is an adventurous 13-mile hike that requires both time and effort. 

Veteran visitors recommend contacting the staff at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center and inquire about a permit and to get current information on the weather and trail conditions before you begin your adventure. FYI: There are four other official area visitor centers. They are Big Water, Cannonville, Escalante, and Kanab.

10. See The Anasazi State Park Museum

This is actually both a museum and a state park located in Southern Utah. There is also an information center focused on the entire surrounding area, a souvenir store, and an outdoor picnic area as well. Of course, the main attraction here is the rugged ruins of an ancient Anasazi Village. It is formally known as the Coombes Village site. Located in Garfield County, it is open all year.

11. Explore The Escalante Petrified Forest State Park

This state park is also located in Garfield County approximately a half-mile north of the actual town of Escalante. Here you can hike through an actual petrified forest. In fact, the popular Petrified Forest Trail is a single-mile loop, relatively easy, and enjoyable. Other highlights here include the reservoir where you can go kayaking or paddle boarding and the little visitor center museum that’s free to explore.

Feeling hungry after your full day of fun and adventure? Need more than a picnic lunch of trail mix and water? Those in the know suggest getting a bite to eat at the following assorted eateries.

The Escalante Outfitters Restaurant

This restaurant is actually a part of the nearby Escalante Outfitters store nestled in Escalante. Here you can get coffee, lunch, and dinner. The pizza and beer come highly recommended. The complex also offers visitors pay showers and a laundromat as well. The store itself focuses more on camping-related clothing and other gear.

Kiva Koffeehouse

Also located in Escalante, this place was built to blend in with the environment so if you’re not paying attention you could almost miss it. Use Google Maps if you don’t want to have to turn around and go back. While they do advertise meals, the highlight here is the coffee and pastries. There’s plenty of parking too.

Magnolia’s Street Food Truck  

If you’d just like to grab a bite and go, consider this food truck parked by the earlier-mentioned Anasazi State Park Museum. The park is a fun place to stop and you can grab a bite and go!

13. Buying Your Supplies

Escalante Outfitters

This business, mentioned earlier, does have a store. However, the majority of the merchandise here centers around camping gear, hiking gear, clothing, sunscreen, and souvenir stickers.

Groceries

It shouldn’t take an Eagle Scout like your rovin’ writer to tell you that especially when it comes to food and water, you really should “be prepared.” Veteran visitors can confirm that as this goes to press, there are no full-service supermarkets anywhere in the area. You must either shop before you arrive or “be prepared” for a limited selection.

Beer, Wine, and Alcohol

You’re in the state of Utah. Alcohol is comparatively difficult to find here The Escalante Outfitters, however, also offers adventurers a selection of beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages if you didn’t bring your own.

14. Accommodations in Grand Staircase-Escalante

If you plan on spending a night or more here, you need to know your options. Camping in the area is an option but permits and reservations may be an issue should you not plan properly.

One suggested possibility is the Bureau of Land Management’s Hole In The Rock. They offer spots where you can even park a trailer. Should you get there early enough, you can even score a spot with an incredible view!

Escalante Outfitters offers cabins with minimal amenities. They sleep up to two people. There’s even a single-family cabin complete with its own bathroom and cable TV. However, there are only seven of them so plan ahead.   

Area RV Parks

If you are traveling in an actual RV, there’s the Escalante Cabins and RV Park! There are other RV options such as Circleville RV Park and Duck Creek Village RV but they are almost two hours away from the park itself.

Last but not least, is the Entrada Escalante Lodge. It is praised for being the area’s “best value hotel.” Suites include kitchenettes and living room spaces.

1. Go To The Great Chamber

Some travelers are drawn to this place simply from seeing a picture. Mind you, the drive there is not effortless. If you like off-roading though and have the proper vehicle, you should be fine on the sandy roads leading to this attraction.

If you don’t have the proper vehicle, don’t stress. You can sign on for a professional tour. A good guide will get you there in a timely manner, advise you on how not to overly disturb the sand there, and even take a picture of you if you ask nicely. Locals report that most tours begin at 9 a.m. so try to book one earlier and you will beat the others.

Experience The Wave

As this goes to press, it is relatively difficult to get a permit to hike here. Nevertheless, it is worth the effort. At press time, it involves a lottery, so if at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again every day you’re there in Kanab. Worse comes to worst, even if you don’t score a permit, there are a number of different noteworthy excursions in this area. Be aware that if you do garner a hiking permit, the permit will be for the following day, so you need to plan your visit accordingly.

See The Belly Of The Dragon

Seeing this attraction is a quick, fun trip that veteran visitors confirm is “perfect” for one of those hot summer days. Not only can you actually see this popular tunnel from the actual parking lot, but the hike through the actual tunnel is easy and short too. On the other hand, if you’re up for a longer hike, you can extend your hike by roughly four miles by hiking through the wash as well.

You will, however, need headlamps if you decide to venture into the cave in the evening. It’s actually more challenging in the dark. One final tip: don’t plan on doing this hike if it is at all rainy because the tunnel serves as a water drain for the upper canyons here.

Conquer A Via Ferrata

For those not in the know, a Via Ferrata is essentially a metal course that allows you to scale a sheer rock wall. You are locked and harnessed in so it’s safe.There is also generally a guide to assist you as well.

The Via Ferrata in Kanab includes areas that are definitely challenging, especially the section where you need to cross using your hands on the rough rock. Still, this will make it even more memorable. You can rappel here too if you choose.

You will be stepping on metal rungs as you climb upward, so it is smart to wear footwear that provides you with good traction on those thing rungs. Hiking boots will work. Is it possible to complete the climb safely without them? Sure, but the right footwear will definitely give you more peace of mind.

Visit White Pocket

Some photographers like this place better than the more well-known Wave. Both are, of course, beautiful and worth seeing. Indeed, while the famous Wave is like nothing you’ve ever seen, the White Pocket area is more fun for photographers and offers travelers a unique experience.

Be careful driving there. The road is reported to be quite sandy and some visitors get stuck there. Consider going with a guide or driving a reliable high-clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle. Even if you off-road a lot, remember that this is soft sand. Once you arrive, you also need to remember that the landscape here is actually delicate so be careful where you step in order to help preserve the native vegetation and the brittle rocks.

Explore The Moqui Cave

Need a break from the summer heat? This is another perfect place to chill out. Believe it or not, Moqui Cave used to be a bar where such famous actors as John Wayne would visit while filming various Westerns. 

Today, it’s a family-owned and managed museum and cave complete with fun fluorescent rocks, distinct dinosaur tracks, and assorted ancient artifacts, dinosaur tracks, and fluorescent rocks. While they do not serve adult beverages here anymore, you can still have a soft drink and sit right where Wayne often sat. Be sure not to miss the large wooden carving too.  

Feeling peckish? You can grab a bite at the popular panini truck that’s parked outside the cave. By the time you get there, they may have already converted one of the unused spaces inside the cave so they can host various movie screenings, live music performances, and other events. The cave’s temperature is never higher than 65 degrees Fahrenheit so bring a hoodie or a light jacket.

Delve Into The Kanab Sand Caves

Next, head south of Moqui Cave and you will find this interesting attraction that has five separate openings. Be careful if you research this online. Some traveler bloggers and even confused veteran visitors refer to the Kanab Sand Caves as the Moqui Caves.

Indeed, even Google Maps had it mislabeled as this article is being written. The locals say this place is called the Sand Caves. They are man-made caves once briefly used to mind sand many years ago.

If you’re into hiking, you can walk from Moqui Cave to these caves. The distance is a little shorter if you drive and park in the pullout located south of Moqui Cave. You can see these caves across the street from the pullout. While the hike is just half a mile, it is steep in places.

Enjoy The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

If you’re into petting, head for the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary on Angel Canyon Road. It is America’s biggest no-kill shelter. The sanctuary includes 37,000 acres and another 33,000 acres leased from the Bureau of Land Management.

The general tour includes cats, dogs, pigs, and horses. You can also take tours focused on specific interests. Go online to see the tour schedule and even book the free tours. You can check out some places, like Angels Rest, on your own if you wish.

You might not be able to get any cell service, but do you really need it? If so, some of the actual buildings here might have WiFi available. If seeing some of the animals eat makes you hungry, there is a cheap vegan lunch buffet at the inexpensive Angel Village.

Hike To The Towering Toadstool Hoodoos

This enjoyable hike is considered an easy one. It is an out-and-back hike with a total distance of less than two miles. Shutterbugs should note that you will discover a number of noteworthy photo ops here as well.  

It is one of those wonderful hikes that is short and easy yet it yields surprisingly high rewards. The Toadstool Hoodoos Trail is one of those hikes that frequent hikers almost endlessly praise. The rugged rock formations here are often massive and memorable. Veteran visitors also report that this place is also an exceptional spot for anyone interested in astrophotography.

Check Out The Little Hollywood Museum

Your next stop is this museum on West Center Street. As previously suggested, Kanab has been the setting for many well-known westerns, hence the name “Little Hollywood.” In fact, as you stroll around town, you will notice several plaques concerning key individuals in the motion picture industry.  

It’s a popular place for photoshoots. It includes a gift shop and multiple movie sets on its backlot. Admission is free. Be sure to stay for one of their Chuckwagon Cookouts complete with Dutch-oven dinners and western entertainment.

Stop At Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

This state park on Sand Dune Road is a favorite of the locals. There’s a lot to do here including biking, hiking, and sledding or sandboarding down the hills. Rent an OHV (off-highway vehicle) and race over the dunes too. While the sand may not always look really pink, if you visit this place a little before sunset you’ll get a better understanding of why this place is named the “Coral Pink” Sand Dunes State Park.

If you’re headed for the US state of Utah, and into hiking, then read on, fellow traveler. The Utah desert is admittedly hot but that will just add to your retelling of the adventurous vacation tale when you arrive home. Mind you, if you hike in the fall, it’s cooler and less crowded, and hotel rooms are cheaper. The choice is up to you. However, in order to help you with choosing which road to travel, so to speak, here are the 25 must-do hikes in Southern Utah.

The 25 Must-Do Hikes in Southern Utah

1. Hike to the Lower Calf Creek Falls

This hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls is an out-and-back hike of 5.74 miles with an elevation gain of 515 feet. Your trek begins at the popular Calf Creek Campground in Boulder. Outhouses and potable water are available here. The hike through the sandstone canyon and beyond includes Native American ruins, a beautiful waterfall, and a wonderful natural pool for swimming.  

Eat lunch at the waterfall. The trail’s open all year but it’s hot in summer and there’s sometimes snow in the winter. There is a fee for parking and an additional charge to camp there if you choose to do so. Dogs are permitted if they’re leashed.

Hike to Mesa Arch

Travel to Moab. For it is here that you can hike to the famous Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. This loop hike is approximately one mile (depending on the source).

It is obviously an easy hike with an elevation gain of 164 feet. Plan on this being a one-hour adventure adding in some time to stop and admire the historic arch. You should be able to go see a few things in Arches National Park on the same day if you wish. In fact, if you plan ahead, you can get a campsite in Devil’s Garden, and you can set up a base there for a relaxing weekend-long vacation.

Hike to the Golden Cathedral

Head to Garfield County and the Egypt Trailhead. For it is here that your trek to the Golden Cathedral deep in the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument begins. It is a moderately difficult out-and-back hike with a distance of 9.27 miles and an elevation gain of 1398 feet.

Note that you can either head right for the canyon’s mouth or hike down Fence Canyon and camp out at the Escalante River. Either way, once you reach Neon Canyon, it’s just a short hike to the Golden Cathedral. It should take you well under one hour. Dogs are permitted here but they must be on a leash at all times.

Hike to Cassidy Arch

Torrey is the site for this scenic out-and-back adventure. The total distance is just over three miles. The elevation gain is 1,283 feet. While it’s often said that the lengthy, more demanding hikes are worth the effort, this trip provides a stunning payoff as you stand atop the arch following a short hike with but a minimal amount of scrambling.  

You can also explore the awesome overlooks of popular Capitol Reef National Park, and if you’re a shutterbug, get some great shots of the cool rock formations and the striking dark night sky here. The Fruita Campground is available if you choose to do some camping while you’re there as well.

Hike the Navajo Loop & Queens Garden Trail

This hiking trip is based in Bryce. Depending on your choices, you’ll hike a distance of between 2.93 and three and a half miles. The elevation gain here is 679 feet.

No matter which trail you use to see the famous hoodoos in Bryce Canyon, this loop hike is said to be one of the very best ways to do it. The Navajo trail which actually starts at popular Sunset Point includes a lot of switchbacks but gets you to the bottom in a comparatively short time. It’s well-traveled so while you won’t be alone, it confirms our recommendation. Don’t hike here in the winter unless you like snow.

Hike in the Paria Canyon

Avoid the crowds here in Kanab. This hike is a total of almost 15 miles out and back with an elevation gain of 846 feet. Want to save money on this fairly unknown canyon hike as well?

This is a great way to see Zion National Park’s Narrows, Antelope Canyon’s steep walls, or the oddly-patterned lines of the well-known Wave, and avoid spending $100.00 on a commercial hour-long tour. You can get all that in less-popular Paria Canyon for free. Enjoy camping?  

Check out the relatively unpopulated campsite at the trailhead. It’s just five dollars per night. (Note: you’ll get your feet wet on this hike and there’s little shade. Plan accordingly.)

Hike the Narrows

Some travel scribes say hiking the famous Narrows in Zion National Park in Springdale is “one of the most unique” adventures you may ever experience. It is under 10 miles out and back with an elevation of 330 feet. What may make it somewhat difficult for some is that much of the trail could be submerged by the Virgin River which makes it refreshing in the hot summer but possibly too cold in the fall. Still, the bottom of this slot canyon is highlighted with trees, waterfalls, natural springs, wildlife, and incredibly colorful sandstone walls. The Narrows is closed when the river is flowing at 150 CFS (Cubic Feet per Second) or more.

Hike the Red Cliffs Recreation Nature Trail

This Red Cliffs hike in Hurricane allows you to explore an exceptional area in Southern Utah. It’s also one of the best family-friendly hikes in the state. This out-and-back hike is less than one and a half miles in total and has a comparatively mild elevation gain of 266 feet.

You start at the Red Cliffs Campground north of St. George. Here you trek along blue-water streams running through the red sandstone and pass a few small waterfalls. It provides an eye-catching contrast. There are footholds and a rope where the trail gets a little steep but nothing difficult. There are charges for parking and camping, of course.

Hike to Double Arch

Travel to the Castle Valley area and prepare for this brief hike. It is a good half-mile out and back with an elevation gain of just 135 feet. This hike in the Arches National Park vicinity will allow you not only to see the Double Arch in person but it gives you the choice of visiting other natural arches as well. The famous Double Arch is actually a pair of arches that share the same rugged stone for their outer leg foundation. This natural attraction is the result of downward water erosion. Unlike some of the other previously mentioned hiking trailheads, you should have no trouble finding parking here.

Hike in Horseshoe Canyon

Scraping into the top ten list of our 25 must-do hikes in sunny Southern Utah is a healthy hike in popular Horseshoe Canyon. This is an out-and-back hike near Hanksville, in Wayne County. The total distance is reportedly 7.02 miles.

There is a somewhat significant elevation gain of 1,857 feet. If you enjoy pretty scenery you will not be disappointed on this hike. The Horseshoe Canyon Trail allows you to see various local flora. Veteran visitors report there are some beautiful wildflowers found there.

Hike to the Broken Bow Arch

Next on our list of Southern Utah hikes is the Kane County-centered Southern Utah hike to Broken Bow Arch. This is a hike of 6.28 miles out and back. It includes an elevation of 732 feet.  

The arch was named by an early explorer here who discovered pieces of a broken Indigenous bow at the arch. The hike to this huge sandstone arch located in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument begins at the Willow Gulch Trailhead off of Hole in the Rock Road. Most of this hike takes place in a striking sandstone canyon.  You’ll probably find comparatively few other people hiking here. Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash.

Hike Bryce Canyon’s Wall Street

Bryce’s Bryce Canyon is a popular place for several hikes. This loop trail hike will take you on a short trip of 3.25 miles. The elevation gain is just 610 feet. Yes, this easy hike features noteworthy natural land formations and stunning views.

But the main attraction here is the famous hoodoos. What are hoodoos? Hoodoos are Bryce Canyon’s incredible rock formations.  

Veteran visitors suggest getting there before winter begins. You can start this hike at either end, too. Start at the Queen’s Garden Trail by Sunrise Point or at Sunset Point by the famous, majestic Wall Street. Empire of the Sun’s “Alive” music video was shot here.

Hike to Goblin’s Lair & Carmel Canyon

Green River is the place to be for this must-do, out-and-back hike in Southern Utah. The full distance is under three and a half miles with a minimal elevation of 433 feet. This is a comparatively secluded hike.

This trek is terrific since it offers ample opportunity for shutterbugs. It’s also reported to be a super spot for beginner canyoneers. They can explore here without fear.

This awesome, isolated hike allows for some flexibility and choices in route as well since there aren’t a lot of places in Goblin Valley that are off-limits. (“Goblins”, in this case, are unusual rock formations.) Rather than follow some predetermined route you find online, customize your adventure!

Hike Little Wild Horse Canyon & Bell Canyon Loop

While in Green River, consider completing this loop hike too. This loop hike has a distance of over eight miles and an elevation gain of under 800 feet. Those in the know suggest giving yourself at least five hours so that you can enjoy the easily accessible and striking slot canyons here.

Some travel writers say that Little Wild Horse Canyon is the better of the two canyons on what some call a “classic Southern Utah experience.” If you are not feeling so athletic and choose to hike only one of the two canyons, go for Little Wild Horse. It’s pretty easy and there are no surprises. Camp nearby and save one for the next day!

Hike the West & East Rim Loop at Dead Horse Point

Have you ever noticed how much there is to do in and around Moab? This loop trail hike is yet another recommended activity. The total distance here hiking the “Grand Canyon” of Utah is a good five miles and the elevation gain is 928 feet.

Mind you, experienced hikers suggest that if you’re up to a hike of almost ten miles, you should choose to extend the hike by adding the various lookout points. If, however, you’re interested in the lookout points but not feeling energetic, you can cut out the portion where the East and West rims of the trail meet. It’s a tad touristy anyway.

Hike the Loop Trail at Natural Bridges National Monument 

Slotting in next on our list of must-do hikes in Southern Utah is this loop trail trek to this well-known U.S. National Monument situated roughly 50 miles northwest of the famous Four Corners boundary of the southeast part of the state. While hiking around this area can take anywhere between a mere matter of minutes or an entire day, this hike has an entire distance of almost nine miles. It is a moderately difficult hike with an elevation gain of 560 feet. This is yet another hike that can be done from either end. It’s just a matter of personal preference.

Hike the Riggs Spring Loop

If you’re spending some time in Bryce Canyon, consider completing this hike as well. Indeed, this is a great place to not only hike but to do some backcountry camping too. This loop trail hike in one of the nation’s most scenic national parks is almost nine months.  

It has an elevation gain of 2,044 feet. The views here in Bryce Canyon National Park are nigh-unparalleled and also offer exceptional opportunities for noteworthy nighttime photography. Hiking the rugged Riggs Spring Loop allows you to escape the crowds. The preferred trailhead is at the Rainbow Point overlook. Enjoy seeing the superb sight of the sun setting on the signature pink cliffs!

Hike the Zion Subway, Bottom-Up

This out-and-back Utah adventure begins at the lesser-known Left Fork Trailhead located on Kolob Terrace Road near the little town of Virgin outside of popular Zion National Park. The hike requires a permit and has a total distance of almost seven miles. More importantly, it leads you to one of the park’s most beautiful attractions, The Subway.

You can cool off and even go swimming in the pools located above the well-known Subway. Dress appropriately too as a great portion of this hike will take you through the Virgin River. Be sure to wander off the trail for a little bit to check out the dinosaur tracks and the cascading water as well too!

Hike Angel’s Landing at Night

If you’re vacationing in Zion National Park, this is an exceptional nighttime activity! This is an out-and-back hike with a total distance of under five miles. The elevation gain here is 1,512 feet.  

This is one of the park’s most popular hikes. Zion offers amazing night views of the canyon to those with no fear of the dark. It makes a great day hike too but nighttime is a great time to see the place with headlamps.  

Indeed, Angel’s Landing is even more breathtaking once the sun goes down. Park at or near the Grotto. The trailhead for this hike is across the river, to the right, and uncrowded at night.

The Observation Point Hike

Enjoy another adventure in Springdale by taking this approximately seven-mile out-and-back hike. It has an elevation gain of 2,100 feet and offers an excellent view of all of Zion Canyon. Veteran visitors say you can beat the tourist crowds and look down on awesome Angels Landing.

Indeed, not only is it a great place to take pictures but it’s a nice shady spot for lunch as well. The ascent is a bit strenuous but great exercise. You can drive your vehicle right to the trailhead in the winter and avoid crowds. In the summer, you’re better off taking the Zion Shuttle from the visitor center. Don’t miss the Weeping Wall either.

Hike Grandstaff Canyon

More must-do hiking awaits you in Moab. This is another out-and-back hike with a distance of 4.34 miles and an elevation gain of 1,335 feet. Avoid the crowds at Arches National Park, and take in incredible views of the nation’s largest natural bridges.  

History buffs may take a special interest in this place. Up until the 1960s, it was called N*gger Bill Canyon. The name was changed to Negro Bill Canyon until it was renamed Grandstaff in 2017. Regardless of its initial lack of a politically correct title, this canyon, nestled along the mighty Colorado River, has always been a favorite. Be prepared to get wet and don’t miss Morning Glory Bridge!

Hike to Navajo Arch

While in Moab, don’t miss your chance to take this out-and-back hike either. It is actually less than three miles and has an elevation gain of just 377 feet. Give yourself between two to four hours for this hike. You will find some shade, and other hiking trailheads, and see multiple arches and rugged red sandstone rock formations on your way to Navajo Arch. 

Much of this hike is considered easy until you get past Landscape Arch. At that point, you will need to carefully climb and scramble up some slickrock fins. Navajo Arch is actually surrounded by trees. In fact, there’s even a sturdy single pine tree growing right beneath the famous arch.

Hike Druid Arch

Journey to Monticello, Utah for this must-do hike. It is over 10 miles out and back with an elevation gain of 1,594 feet. You will need between six and eight hours for this hike so pack a lunch!

Before heading out for Druid Arch, named for its resemblance to England’s Stonehenge, on Canyonlands National Park’s eastern side, you should drop by the Needles Visitor Center and get a map. The trek begins at the Elephant Hill Trailhead. Start your hike around 5:30 a.m. since the morning’s the best time to see the famous arch. This hike includes amazing views of the cliffs and canyon, It involves some scrambling and climbing too.

Hike Sulphur Creek

Travel to Torrey to take this nearly six-mile point-to-point hike. It includes an elevation gain of 1,191 feet. This is one of the most popular backcountry hikes in Capitol Reef National Park. It also serves as a superb introduction to canyoneering. It features a trio of wonderful waterfalls and stunning steep cliff walls as well.

This point-to-point hike begins at the Chimney Rock Trailhead and requires that you either hike three miles along Highway 24 or set up a shuttle ride. If you decide to do this hike in the summer, you may wish to hike through the river to keep cool. The hike officially ends at the Capitol Reef National Park Visitors Center.

Hike to the Timber Creek Overlook

This is a short out-and-back hike in New Harmony, Utah of just over one mile. It has an elevation of 102 feet and provides you with a great panoramic view. It is family-friendly and fine for hikers of all skill levels too.  

You will find the Timber Creek Overlook trail at the end of Kolob Canyon Drive in popular Zion National Park. The trail is well-maintained. It includes restrooms and picnic tables as well. Veteran visitors suggest doing the hike a little bit before sunset as the glow of the sunset on Kolob Canyon’s rugged sandstone walls is incredible. Oddly, travel writers report that this overall area is actually one of the park’s “least explored parts.”

The best time to hike here is early in the morning when it is cooler. You’ll avoid any potential crowds as well.

Leprechaun Canyon, Glen  Canyon National Recreation Area

You will find lovely Leprechaun Canyon off the beaten path, north of the gorgeous Glen Canyon. It is a notably deep canyon and if you hike it you will discover a notably beautiful endpoint. In fact, if you choose the family-friendly option, you will not encounter any dangerous sections. Additionally, it only takes a short hike to reach it. It’s close to the Colorado River crossing at the remote Ranger District of Hite, which is exceptionally scenic.

While you’re in the Peek-a-Boo Gulch area, why not check out its neighbor Spooky Gulch. This is actually one of the narrowest slot canyons on this list. The Zebra Slot Canyon, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

The Zebra Slot Canyon is a local favorite of a number of travel writers and experienced hikers. It’s marked by zebra-like stripes within the sandstone. This 300-foot-long slot canyon generally has water in it and can be as narrow as 10 inches too.

In fact, some hikers have turned back because they actually get claustrophobic. The canyon’s tapered floor can make it difficult for some hikers to easily navigate. Be prepared to get wet.  

Dress accordingly. Start your hike at Hole in the Rock Road then slowly descend into Harris Wash. It is there that you will eventually come to the mouth of the canyon.

Little Death Hollow, The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument

At first, Little Death Hollow, in the Escalante area, is deep and wide. However, as you progress in your hike, it slowly converges into a slot where you must hike single-file for miles. Additionally, you will find fewer people here than at Peek-a-Boo or Zebra. The rich sandstone here comes complete with exceptional color and textures too.

Paria Canyon, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Paria Canyon is located on the border of Arizona and Utah. Thus, you might also consider it an Arizona slot canyon too. The canyon features many miles worth of towering walls. 

It is also the second-largest slot canyon on this list. Again, prepare to get wet as the mighty Paria River runs wall-to-wall in many areas. You will be doing some river hiking. Get a permit and go backpacking along the Paria all the way out to the rushing Colorado River at majestic Marble Canyon.

The Joint Trail, Canyonlands National Park

The Joint Trail is unique. It is unlike the other slot canyons of Utah. Most slot canyons are the result of water erosion. This one, however, was created by huge layers of sandstone that actually cracked beneath their own weight. This, in turn, left a great grid of multiple slot canyons with caverns and perpendicular intersections. You will need a full day of hiking within the Needles District of Canyonlands in order to reach your destination.

Buckskin Gulch, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Beautiful Buckskin Gulch is one of the world’s longest continuous canyons and has a total of 13 miles of narrows. It actually leads into the previously mentioned Paria Canyon. You can think of the bottom entry line spot as a detour from Paria Canyon’s “Whitehouse” Trailhead. If you would rather not hike too far, you can see the upper entry point of Buckskin Gulch at the “Wire Pass” Trailhead. Get a permit and go backpacking through both Buckskin Gulch and Paria Canyon in one trip.

The Narrows, Zion National Park

Regular readers may already recognize The Narrows. As previously mentioned elsewhere on this website, visitors to Zion National Park will find a number of different hiking trails here that vary in levels of difficulty. The Narrows, however, is hands down the most popular hike to do here in the park.  

The Narrows is the biggest canyon on this list. The walls are more than 1,000 feet high and only 20 feet wide in some places. If you want to see the deepest and narrowest parts of the canyon, do a day hike up the Virgin River.  

Do you enjoy camping? Speak to the Park Service personnel and get an overnight permit. Then hike The Narrows top-down.    

The best time to hike any popular canyon is as early in the morning as possible in order to avoid any potential crowds. The well-known Bonneville Salt Flats cover an area of 30,000 white salt-crusted acres of the Great Salt Lake’s western edge. The Salt Lake City Public Library, Salt Lake City

This library is a striking example of modernist architecture. It was designed by Moshe Safdie, the internationally-acclaimed architect. The interior design is also impressive. Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple, Spanish Fork

This temple was inspired by India’s Rajasthani architecture and was built in 1998. It serves the state’s Hindu population. (Bet you never knew there was a Hindu population in Utah, huh?)

Yes, here in the middle of a raw, rugged desert landscape in a place with mainly Mormons, there is a gorgeous, elaborate temple. The 15-acre property includes a lovely lake, a waterfall, outdoor stages, a big pavilion, organic crops, and even some animals. Tours are available every day. Following the tour, you can enjoy the vegetarian buffet, go to the temple room for a short session of kirtan, stroll the grounds on your own, or even visit the gift shop. The Real Up House, Herriman

The famous real Up house was erected by Bangerter Homes in 2011. This iconic, Disney-approved building from the motion picture Up is located at 13218 Herriman Rose Boulevard and is open to visitors. 17. The Moqui Cave, Kanab

The Moqui Cave is composed of sandstone. Found in the southern part of the state, it’s actually a natural history museum that includes fluorescent minerals and even a bar. It was once the home of both dinosaurs and Native Americans who left behind a distinctive trail of footprints, fossils, art, pottery, and more now on display.  

Additionally, it’s a cool place to be, both figuratively and literally, when the heat becomes a bit too much. The cave is never warmer than 65 degrees Fahrenheit. There’s even an outdoor cafe here. Be sure to see the teepee’s back-lit room where you can see the glowing paintings and minerals.

The Mars Desert Research Station, Hanksville

Thanks to NASA, the well-known Mars Society has been prepping for a hypothetical future when man will boldly go to Mars. As you may already know, the terrain here in Utah actually resembles Mars. In fact, it’s been used for Martian simulations in the past.

The impressive Mars Desert Research Station or MDRS is run by a minimal crew of select scientists from different disciplines who actually carry out scientific studies on the station and also replicate space missions to the red planet. They usually conduct their simulations in the winter, and visitors are permitted to take photographs from a safe distance. They are, however, quite busy then so visitors are asked not to approach the actual station without being given permission. If the crew is not wearing space suits, feel free to request a tour. Red Hills Desert Garden, St. George

This is the state’s first-ever desert conservation garden and covers an area of five acres. Here you will be able to see prehistoric dinosaur tracks over 200 million years old, a replica of a slot canyon, 5,000 desert plants, and an actual stream with both endangered and native fish. 1. The Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch is one of the most famous arches in the world (that isn’t golden). It certainly is the most popular arch when it comes to hiking destinations in this park. This is a three-mile return hike.

The hike is difficult enough to require at least two and a half hours. Visit Wolfe Ranch at the start of the hike. You can also stop to rest at the drop off prior to reaching Delicate Arch.

If you visit in April you will also be able to take in a contrasting view of the Utah desert and the snow-capped majestic La Sal Mountains in the background. Sunset and sunrise are the best time of the day to see it. Additionally, you reportedly have a better chance of avoiding crowds at sunrise.

2. The Delicate Arch Viewpoint

If you would rather not do the hiking, this is a great option. Around the corner from the official trailhead, there is a great viewpoint. In fact, there’s an upper and lower viewpoint.

The lower viewpoint is unique but if you choose to hike to the Delicate Arch don’t bother going there as it is comparatively speaking not all that exciting. The upper viewpoint is only half a mile away but it’s a climb up a rocky route. Veteran visitors insist if you can do the actual hike to the Delicate Arch then that should be your priority.

3. The Landscape Arch

The Landscape Arch is actually the start of a more challenging nearly eight-mile hike known as the Devil’s Garden Trail. Those in the know suggest not attempting it with children. The Landscape Arch hike is a 1.6-mile return hike.

It’s an easy hike. You can do it in an hour. While there is some uphill hiking it is not difficult.

Plus, you get the chance to look at more arches on the way. There are also short side trails here. They lead to Pine Tree Arch, Tunnel Arch, and Double O Arch. Additionally, there are other nearby side trails that lead to the Partition and Navajo Arches.

4. The Windows and Turret Arch

You will be able to see three arches in one hike. Better yet, this hike is an easy one-mile round trip hike. It should only take you roughly 45 minutes.

You can see both the North and South Window and then continue on to see the Turret Arch. Be sure to stop, turn and look behind you at the North and South Window
Too. It is then that you will be able to get a good look at the Mask.

5. The Sand Dune Arch

If you are visiting the park and looking for a hike that would be good with kids then look no further. Veteran visitors say this is one of the best hikes to take. This is an easy 0.3-mile return hike.

Within 20 minutes you will reach the Sand Dune Arch. Furthermore, this particular trail takes you between some narrow walls of sedimentary rock. It also has a huge sandy floor also known as “the sandpit” for your kids.

The kids can leap from the small edges of the pit and play in the sand. Not too far from this sandpit, you will be able to spot the sand dunes ensconced in the fins. It actually sheds a lot of light on exactly how the arches here are created in the center of the fins.

(While your more energetic kids play, you can catch your breath there.) On the other hand, if you are more energetic, there is another option. There is another trail that breaks off from the Sand Dune Arch.

This 1.3-mile return trail will lead you to Broken Arch. It is reported to be an easy hike that will take you across flat, open grassland. In fact, these two arches are so close you can actually see Broken Arch from the entrance to the Sand Dune Arch.

6. The Double Arch

The Double Arch is the park’s tallest arch. It is located across from the Windows and Turret Arch. This half-mile return hike is an easy one.

If you have kids this is another especially family-friendly hike. It should take you about 20 minutes to complete the hike. This is also a great trek because you get the opportunity to see four different arches within a short period of time.

In fact, those who have been, confirm that you can even see one from the parking lot itself. This is especially good for families with younger children because they can actually have a visual goal. (In fact, a visual goal is nice for adults too!) The kids can even climb on the rocks under the arch when you get there.

7. The Skyline Arch

The impressive Skyline Arch is situated between Landscape Arch and Sand Dune Arch on the well-known Devils’ Garden Drive. You can easily see it from the road if you’re driving and have a tight schedule. However, if you don’t have a tight schedule you should stop and check it out.

This is an easy 0.4-mile return hike. Hiking over the rocks will only take 20 minutes of your time. More importantly, you’ll be able to get a significantly closer view of this arch.

8. Balanced Rock

The trail around the Balanced Rock perimeter is one of the shortest in the entire park. Thus, it is an easy 0.3-mile return hike that you should be able to complete in 20 minutes or less. It will also provide you with a beautiful view of the previously-mentioned Windows Arch.

9. The Fiery Furnace Hike

Are you tired of easy trails? Arches National Park offers adventure as well. There are some trail markings here but it is still listed as a strenuous, difficult two-mile hike. Indeed, those who have been, say it is still quite possible to get lost and solo hikers are strongly discouraged.

Nevertheless, for more adventurous, experienced hikers this is one of the top ten activities offered here in Moab . You will need agility to explore the narrow, labyrinthine sandstone canyons of Fiery Furnace. 10. Scenic Drive Viewpoints

Some of this park is also easy to see via the popular 19-mile Arches Scenic Drive. This drive begins at the park’s entrance at Highway 191 and continues to the official Devils Garden trailhead. If you choose this option, be sure to schedule some time to stop at the numerous trailheads and viewpoints you find on the way.

Keep in mind that parking is limited at every stop. Such popular trailheads as Devils Garden and Delicate Arch can be filled for hours, especially on holidays and weekends. Veteran visitors suggest you plan on stopping at such places as Courthouse Towers Viewpoint, Panorama Point and Petrified Dunes Viewpoint.

Photographers should also pull over somewhere safe and get a good shot of the impressive snow-capped La Sal Mountains. If you are traveling with young children this may not be for you. If the river is too high it could be a problem.  Additionally, if the weather is bad you could be facing a flash flood even if the river is not too high.

The water could also be too cold for your comfort level as well. Veteran visitors confirm you could be dealing with all of these issues if you visit in March. In fact, the park could close the Narrows depending on the conditions.

If you do decide to go when the weather is warm you may still want to take wetsuits and a change of footwear. You also need to remember that this hike involves wading up the river. Despite its popularity, you will need to be fit enough to handle it.

3. Upper and Lower Emerald Pools

These trails are also very popular. The Upper Emerald Pool Trail often suffers from closures due to such natural occurrences as rock falls. 4. Weeping Rock Trail

If you like easy hikes this is the one for you. Enjoy the view at the well-known Court of the Patriarchs. The court mainly consists of a trio of huge sandstone peaks named after the biblical figures named Abraham, Jacob, and Isaac. 7. Go biking on the Pa’rus Trail

Try to visit when the weather is nice as bad weather conditions can necessitate closing this trail. The Pa’rus Trail is three and a half miles long round trip. It is the only trail that permits biking inside the park.

Much like a previously mentioned trail, this one also follows the Virgin River. More specifically, the trail runs from the campground to the memorable Canon Junction. Be sure to make time to visit the Human History Museum on the way.

8. Take the Angel’s Landing Challenge

Before taking this hiking challenge, you must consider a number of different things. If you are going with your family you must consider the hiking ability, endurance levels, potential crowds, and each individual’s personal fear factor. (This includes yours too.)

Pretty much anyone can make it to the very top of the switchbacks. This is actually where the Angels Landing trail officially begins. The hike to the switchbacks is known as the West Rim Trail. The West Rim Trail is a bit more than 1.5 miles. The switchbacks make it even less strenuous.

Before stepping onto the Angels Landing trail you might notice a sign warning visitors that since 2007 seven climbers fell off the side of the cliff to their deaths. Some travel writers have noted that your odds of surviving are still good. After all, Not only is Zion National Park the country’s most visited park hosting over 4 million travelers every year, Angel’s Landing is the park’s most popular hiking trail.

If you’re concerned, hiking only to Scout’s Landing to enjoy the view is also an option. After all, the trail does not become steep and narrow until you pass this spot. No matter how far you intend to go though, be aware that Spring Break is not the best time to go if you want to avoid crowds of college students. The best time to take this challenge is early in the morning.

You’ll avoid any potential crowds and have better light. Be sure to hold onto the chains as you walk along the cliff’s edge. The sandy ground there can be slippery.

9. Observation Point & Hidden Canyon Trails

The Hidden Canyon and Observation Point trails are also two worthwhile trails that unfortunately can also be easily impacted by the weather. While veteran visitors recommend seeing the popular Kolob Canyon, again if you don’t hit it at the right time it too could be closed due to weather conditions. So be flexible with your plans and keep an eye on local weather reports as well.

10. Zion-Mount Carmel Scenic Drive

Another very popular activity here in Zion National Park is the Zion-Mount Carmel scenic drive. It runs in an east-west direction, passes through the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel and ends at the park entrance. The tunnel itself is one mile in length and somewhat narrow depending on the size of your vehicle.

In fact, you should know that if you drive a big RV, you will have to get a special permit and an official escort in order to drive through the tunnel. The tunnel is occasionally closed for maintenance so do your homework when you plan your trip. Those who have been, suggest that if you are planning on also visiting Bryce Canyon National Park this is an even better road to take.

The scenery on the park’s eastern side is noticeably different than the opposite side because the elevation is higher. Here there are more bighorn sheep and pine trees. Additionally, the rocks and cliff faces are more of an orange color than yellow.

The views in the Zion Canyon as you drive towards the tunnel are also exceptional. It’s reportedly the best place to take in the rugged red mountains and verdant green valley. Finally, be sure to stop off at the Canyon Overlook, too. It’s a must-see!

11. Visit Zion Lodge

When you decide it’s time for a break, have lunch and a cold brew at the Zion Lodge located in the heart of the park. Here you’ll find a great, grassy area with a huge tree in the very center. Enjoy your picnic food while you study the canyon walls.

If the weather turns bad or you simply prefer to eat indoors you can do that too. There’s a cafeteria and a welcoming restaurant complete with an outside deck that overlooks the entire canyon. The outside bar even serves up an interesting IPA from Springdale. If you’ve recharged your batteries, this spot is also where both the Upper and Lower Emerald Trails begin.

12. Junior Rangers Program

If you have kids you will love the Junior Rangers program. Parents in the know claim it’s one of the best family-friendly activities offered there. It’s also a great way for children to make a real connection to the park.

Your kids can complete the activities in the car, during your lunch break and after each day of exploring comes to a close. Some parents claim you can even use this as part of the homeschooling science curriculum (although we have not confirmed that.) It certainly may help enhance your children’s literacy skills.

If you want to involve math then try comparing the height of different peaks there. The bottom line is you need to be sure to visit the Zion Canyon Visitor Center as soon as you get there so that you can pick up Junior Ranger books for your kids. Once your children have completed all the required activities be sure to see one of the rangers there so your kids can get their Junior Ranger badges. They even pledge to take care of our environment. (Who needs Greta?).
