Disclaimer:  In sum, safe places are still dominant in the US, hence, travelers flock into this country without hesitation. Note, however, that the representations of each city in the list below are solely based on the country’s highest violent crime rates. It is good to know what these places are to ensure safety at all times on your out of towns.

1. Detroit, Michigan

Although the crime rate in this city has decreased compared to the past years, its current crime heat statistics still make this area in Michigan as the most dangerous city in the US.

There are 2,007 total violent crimes per 100,000 population. Meanwhile, property crimes per 100, 000 population is 4,304.

The metropolitan area or known as Metro Detroit is home to 4.3 million people making it the most populous area in the whole US. But more than being dubbed as the most populous and most dangerous place, Detroit is known for its contributions to music and storage for historical arts, architecture, and designs. Hence, if you do not want to take risks but still want to enjoy the city’s beautiful tourist spots and culture, only avoid those areas in Detroit with high crime rates. Some other neighboring areas are still safe and friendly to guests.

2. Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is famous for being one of the influential music landmarks in the country. A go-to private home destination in the city is Graceland, known as the home of the iconic Elvis Presley. However, it is recommended to take extra care when visiting Memphis as the city’s crime rate is quite higher than in some other cities around America.

Per recent data, there are around 1,943 total violent crimes in a population of 100, 000, a little lower than Detroit. But Memphis property crimes are soaring to 6,405 per 100,000 population.

3. Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham is a city located in Central Alabama. It has scenic architectural designs. It is known to be with a diverse population and has one of the largest banking centers in the United States. However, this beautiful city requires extra caution for travelers given its recorded above the national average crime rate.

The city’s violent crime rates tally a total of 1, 911 for every 100k people. Its highest crime is homicide with 88 people, third-highest throughout America, recorded to have committed the crime as of 2018. Meanwhile, its property crime record is 6,313 per 100k people.

4. Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore is the most populous city in Maryland hence it is no surprise that it also has the highest crime rate around Maryland State. Being crowded with people, it is just right to call Baltimore as Maryland’s economic hub with distinct neighborhoods and unique museums. The city is also known for its long history as an important seaport, which today is the place for shops, crab shacks, and attractions.

Unfortunately, the city’s violent crime rate has increased since the publicly-reported passing of Freddie Gray in 2015. It has 309 recorded homicides in 2018 with 1,833 violent crimes per 100k people; and 4,495 property crimes per 100k population. But do not generally be disappointed as you can still check out the city without worrying about safety. Choose to visit the areas around the harbor. Fells Point and the Inner harbor are the best places to walk around, nevertheless, just take caution.

5. St. Louis, Missouri

There are many beautiful spots to see in Missouri, including the city of St. Louis. Discover fine restaurants, luxurious hotels, museums and top attractions in the major city in Missouri right near the Mississippi River. St. Louis is known for its iconic 630-ft Gateway Arch, built in the 1960s.

Beware, however, if you are a stranger in the place. In 2018, St. Louis’s homicide rate spiked to 61 incidents per 100,000 people. This number makes the city the homicide capital of America. There are 1,800 violent crimes and 5,911 property crimes for every 100,000 people. 

6. Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City or K.C is the largest city in Missouri by population and area. The city has a recorded population of 491,918 in 2018 based on the U.S. Census Bureau.

Although considered as among the cities with the highest crime rates in the US, K.C. is just second to St. Louis in terms of crime reports throughout Missouri. Unfortunately, the firearm violence in the city, which has been going for more than four years already, adds up to the state level’s increased crime rate. Reportedly, it has violent crimes of 1,590
and property crimes of 4,306 per 100k population.

Nevertheless, do not underestimate K.C’s famous best-tasting barbecue, plus jazz heritage and breathtaking fountains.

7. Cleveland, Ohio

In the state of Ohio, Cleveland earns the highest crime rate with a record of 1,449 violent crimes and 4,411 property crimes per 100k people. Accordingly, one reason for the city’s alarming crime rate is the lack of employment and increasing figures of poverty, where 35.2% of the population live below the poverty line. The city is considered as the 52nd-largest city in the US and the second-largest city in Ohio.

But do not dwell so much on these crime statistics if you were thinking of visiting the place. Cleveland is still a home of popular attractions. The most-visited spots in the city include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

8. Little Rock, Arkansas

The most populous city of Arkansas is Little Rock. This beautiful city with diverse people and yummy food has, unfortunately, a remarkable crime rate. Recent data showed that there are 1,446 violent crimes and 6,547 property crimes for every 100,000 people. 

Chances are, 1 in every 68 people can become a victim of violent crime in this locality. Violent crime is composed of four offenses. 10. Stockton, California

12. Albuquerque, New Mexico

However, the cost of food and utilities in Anchorage is much higher than the average for other cities in America.

16. Oakland, California

In the 1960s, crime in Oakland has increased and it has not stopped rising since then. It has a crime rate of 68 per 1,000 residents. It also has 5,390 property crime rates per 100,000 people. The city’s crime rate has decreased in 2016 but that fact still does not pull out the city in the top dangerous cities in the US. Nonetheless, Oakland is a good place for a vacation because of its perfect medium weather. It also offers a cool sea breeze. Thanks to its location, perfectly in the bay area.
