<p>The year is fast coming to a close. That means it’s almost time to celebrate New Year&#8217;s Eve yet again! So without further adieu, here are the 15 best places in the world to celebrate New Year&#8217;s Eve.</p>
<h4>1. Amsterdam, The Netherlands</h4>
<figure id="attachment_7040" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-7040" style="width: 696px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-7040 size-large" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" width="696" height="696" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6-1068x1068.jpg 1068w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6-420x420.jpg 420w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11-6.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-7040" class="wp-caption-text">Photo By: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/yumsterdam/">@yumsterdam</a></figcaption></figure>
<p>Veteran visitors praise the sight of fireworks reflected in the water in the canals while celebrating the holiday in one of the city’s cozy cafes. Many locals leave the city but there are still many places to party. The fireworks over the river IJ is a popular show as is the one in the park near Westerdoksdijk.</p>
<p>There are events in most major squares. Wherever you go, be sure to get there early with your drinks and chairs. Dress warmly as the city’s cold in December. Buy some traditional dutch snacks, oliebollen, for the morning too.<br />

<h3>2. Cape Town, South Africa</h3>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-7041" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/3-6-1024x683.jpg" alt="" width="696" height="464" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/3-6-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/3-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/3-6-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/3-6-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/3-6-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/3-6-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/3-6.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>Experts say Cape Town is “one of South Africa&#8217;s most visited destinations.” One of the best places to spend New Year&#8217;s Eve there is the V &amp; A Waterfront. Experience the culture and beauty of the city backdropped by iconic Table Mountain.</p>
<p>At the Waterfront, you can be a part of the excited crowd or quietly sip champagne at one of the numerous restaurants or cocktail bars. Walk around the area but be sure to find a good spot to take in the fireworks display over the harbor. There’s plenty of parking or you can use Uber or the convenient MyCiTi bus service.<br />

<h3>3. London, England</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7042" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4-9.jpg" alt="" width="1002" height="680" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4-9.jpg 1002w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4-9-300x204.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4-9-768x521.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4-9-696x472.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/4-9-619x420.jpg 619w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1002px) 100vw, 1002px" /></p>
<p>There’s plenty to do during the day and at night London has a famous firework display. It’s attended by over 100,000 people annually. Those in the know suggest getting tickets to see it from Tower Bridge.</p>
<p>Get out early and see the popular Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park. It’s still open and the crowd is smaller. Ride the rollercoaster; go ice skating and have a drink at the ice-bar. Buy souvenirs too.</p>
<p>Get there by midday. Take the train. Plan ahead too as getting out of the city can be tough after midnight.<br />

<h3>4. Hong Kong, China</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-7043" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/5-8-1024x576.jpg" alt="" width="696" height="392" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/5-8-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/5-8-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/5-8-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/5-8-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/5-8-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/5-8-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/5-8.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>Hong Kong offers several options for a memorable New Year’s Eve. Celebrate at one of the skyscraper bar tops, a boat ride along the river or go native. For the local experience, go to the well-known Victoria Harbour&#8217;s Avenue of Stars and await midnight.</p>
<p>But don&#8217;t expect a rowdy &#8220;Western New Year&#8217;s&#8221;party there. Oddly, everyone simply kicks back quietly on the sidewalk, eats snacks and awaits the countdown. Mind you, while it’s not “party central,” you will enjoy some phenomenal views of the noteworthy firework display at midnight. The juxtaposition of the calmness of the waterfront and a massive celebration is quite memorable.<br />

<h3>5. Dubai, UAE</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-7044" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-8-821x1024.jpg" alt="" width="696" height="868" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-8-821x1024.jpg 821w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-8-240x300.jpg 240w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-8-768x958.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-8-696x868.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-8-337x420.jpg 337w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-8.jpg 1026w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>New Year&#8217;s Eve here features several noteworthy fireworks shows lighting up the impressive buildings. Budget concerns? No worries. If you come up too short to attend the fanciest parties, you can always watch them for free.</p>
<p>One famous show will be hosted by the Burj Al Arab 7 star hotel but you can see it from Sunset Beach, or better yet from Al Sufouh Beach from where you can see both the famous Burj Al Arab show and the popular Palm Jumeirah show as well. You can also watch the fireworks being set off at the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.<br />

<h3>6. Reykjavik, Iceland</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7024" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-7.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="400" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-7.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-7-300x164.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/6-7-696x381.jpg 696w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>Reykjavik locals put on a traditional community fireworks show that is one of the best on the planet. The profits from all fireworks sales go to support ICE-SAR, (the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue.) Fireworks are set off way prior to midnight.</p>
<p>However, once the clock strikes twelve, there are additional fireworks going off from all around you. Head for the hills (where the famous Perlan is perched) for the best view. Go to the big NYE party there too. If you’d rather kick back with the locals, watch the fireworks with hundreds of other folks from the parking lot.<br />

<h3>7. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7025" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7fli.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="487" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7fli.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7fli-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7fli-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7fli-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>One of the biggest NYE celebrations on the planet occurs every year at the famous Copacabana Beach. Roughly 2 million visitors travel to one beach to watch the fireworks show and to jump seven waves in the ocean at midnight. Jumping the waves is a local tradition that is said to bring one luck for the new year. Another fun local tradition is that everyone wears white at this event.</p>
<p>This is a family-friendly event, too. The party begins at roughly 8 p.m. You can buy drinks there or bring your own booze.<br />

<h3>8. Lisbon, Portugal</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7026" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/8fli.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="459" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/8fli.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/8fli-300x189.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/8fli-696x438.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/8fli-668x420.jpg 668w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>Lisbon is one of the warmest places in Europe and the offseason is a great time to visit. There are fewer tourists and it’s reportedly “more cost-effective” as well. In fact, there are several free events in the main square, Praça do Comércio, and along the Tagus River.</p>
<p>There are live bands and fireworks at midnight. Want to stay out all night? There are many little local events where people decorate their neighborhoods.</p>
<p>Wander the streets of Bairro Alto or Alfama. Parties abound in the bars and restaurants too. Dance into the morning light if you wish!<br />
<strong>(Continued on next page)</strong></p>
<h3>9. Auckland, New Zealand</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7028" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/9-blgspt.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="492" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/9-blgspt.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/9-blgspt-300x202.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/9-blgspt-696x469.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/9-blgspt-623x420.jpg 623w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>New Zealand’s biggest city hosts numerous events on New Year&#8217;s Eve. Hit the inner-city’s family-friendly Wondergarden at Silo Park, for live music, street food, and other entertainment. You’ll also find things to do in Ponsonby and on the waterfront.</p>
<p>Here in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s summer too so you can celebrate outside comfortably. There are longer daylight hours too so the party lasts longer. Be sure not to miss the fireworks show at the Sky Tower at midnight. It’s the first major show on the planet!<br />
<strong>(Continued on next page)</strong></p>
<h3>10. Tokyo, Japan</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-7046 size-large" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-1024x765.jpg" alt="" width="696" height="520" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-300x224.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-768x574.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-696x520.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-1068x798.jpg 1068w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8-562x420.jpg 562w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/7-8.jpg 1461w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>Enjoy New Year&#8217;s Eve in the traditional Japanese way. You can still celebrate a western-like countdown but why not try something different? Dine on Toshikoshi soba to bring you luck in the new year. (Soba noodles are long and represent a long life. But slurp them don’t bite them or you cut your life short!)</p>
<p>Right before midnight, go to a shrine for “Hatsumode” (the year’s first shrine visit.) The Meiji shrine is the best place since it’s found right next to Harajuku Station. Listen for the “joya no kane” or midnight bells and pray for a good new year.<br />

<h3>11. Madeira, Portugal</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7030" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11fli.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="486" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11fli.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11fli-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11fli-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/11fli-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>The island of Madeira held the official Guinness World Records title for &#8220;Greatest Fireworks Show in the World&#8221; until 2012. Some call this place &#8220;the Hawaii of Europe.&#8221; This spot draws tourists looking to escape the cold weather and catch the NYE fireworks.</p>
<p>Visit Funchal ensconced in a hill-surrounded bay. Here you will see fireworks set off from several locations across the bay. Cruise ships even line up at the Port of Funchal so passengers can see the show. Visit before Christmas and leave after NYE.<br />
<strong>(Continued on next page)</strong></p>
<h3>12. Cusco, Peru</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7031" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/12-6-e1576892055856.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="457" /></p>
<p>Celebrate NYE in Cusco’s Plaza de Armas. Most of the hostels and hotels are within walking distance of this main square. The event is free and the streets get busy at about 7 p.m.</p>
<p>Keep in mind that according to tradition, you need to wear yellow underwear beneath your clothing to guarantee a full year of good sex. If you wear yellow underwear over your clothes you will get lucky that very night. So don’t be surprised to see people running around the square in yellow undies after midnight.<br />

<h3>13. Nashville, USA</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-7032" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/13mstdtrvls.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="486" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/13mstdtrvls.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/13mstdtrvls-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/13mstdtrvls-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/13mstdtrvls-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>Celebrate New Year&#8217;s Eve in Nashville, Tennessee celebration complete with fireworks, live music, and noteworthy food and drink. The legendary world country music capital holds an all-day concert and it’s free. Dine and dance at the well-known Acme Feed and Seed, have a drink or three at the local &#8220;honky tonks&#8221;, then stroll on over to the famous Bicentennial Capitol Mall for the concert. See the famous 15-foot Music Note (Nashville&#8217;s answer to New York City&#8217;s Times Square Ball) drop at midnight. Stay at the historic Hermitage Hotel.<br />

<p>There are more ancient cities now underwater than you might imagine. Over the years, some of these submerged civilizations have been explained. Others, however, have remained mysteries. Thanks to modern-day technology, we have the ability to see them and bring them to life again. Here then, without further adieu, are 10 of the most mysterious underwater cities of the ancient world.</p>
<h4>1. Dwarka, India<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="540" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5284" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Dwarka-India-1.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Dwarka-India-1.jpg 720w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Dwarka-India-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Dwarka-India-1-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Dwarka-India-1-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Dwarka-India-1-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Dwarka-India-1-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></h4>
<p>Dwarka is referenced in the Hindus’ holy book. This once “mythological” metropolis was thought to have been built by none other than Lord Krishna 5000 years ago. It was also thought to have many palaces.</p>
<p>Many were said to have been made with precious silver and gold. Its ruins were more recently discovered by the famous National Institute of Ocean Technology in the Gulf of Khambhat. Using carbon dating, researchers determined that this ancient city is approximately 9,000 years old. Today it’s one of India’s biggest tourist attractions.</p>

<h3>2. Shicheng, China<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="540" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5285" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Shicheng-China.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Shicheng-China.jpg 720w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Shicheng-China-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Shicheng-China-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Shicheng-China-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Shicheng-China-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Shicheng-China-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></h3>
<p>Also known as “the Lion City,” this place was thought to be at least 1300 years old. In 1959 the city was flooded because the government was constructing a dam on the famous Xin’an River. The end result was the Qiandao Lake.<br />
Shicheng was constructed in 25-200 AD during the Eastern Hand Dynasty. It’s ancient buildings and other structures are thus highlighted by rich Chinese craftsmanship. Indeed, it features several stone structures, five gates, and 265 memorial arches. Because the diving routes have aren’t fully mapped, only trained divers are permitted to visit.<br />

<h3>3. Gulf of Cambay, India<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="405" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5286" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gulf-of-Cambay-India-1.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gulf-of-Cambay-India-1.jpg 720w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gulf-of-Cambay-India-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gulf-of-Cambay-India-1-696x392.jpg 696w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></h3>
<p>This ancient city is located nearly 4.m under the sea. The research team discovered this mysterious metropolis as an accidental result of their study of the amount of water pollution there in 2002. It is thought to be 5,000 years old. A team of divers discovered beads, sculptures, and pieces of pottery there. Scientists believe this place must have once been situated in a coastal area that was engulfed by rising ocean water after numerous glaciers melted during the last ice age.<br />

<h3>4. Pavlopetri, Greece<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="730" height="410" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5288" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Pavlopetri-Greece-1.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Pavlopetri-Greece-1.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Pavlopetri-Greece-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Pavlopetri-Greece-1-696x391.jpg 696w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></h3>
<p>Discovered back in 1967, the true name of this sunken city still remains unknown. Scientists believe that whatever it was called, it was part of <a href="https://addtobucketlist.com/10-most-expensive-hotel-rooms-in-the-world/">Greece</a>’s Peloponnese peninsula prior to sinking roughly 5,000 years ago. Divers discovered an entire community from streets to tombs in a place considered by some to be a Mycenaean civilization. Other archaeologists believe the city could actually be part of a Minoan civilization. Indeed, at last report, the undersea site was being studied by teams from both the University of Nottingham and the University of Cambridge.<br />
<b><span style="color: #191e23;">(Continued on the next page)</span></b></p>
<h3>5. Olous, Greece<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="730" height="483" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5289" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Olous-Greece-1.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Olous-Greece-1.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Olous-Greece-1-300x198.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Olous-Greece-1-696x461.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Olous-Greece-1-635x420.jpg 635w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></h3>
<p>Many snorkelers and divers have already explored the ruins of the ancient city of Olous. It is believed to once have been on the northeastern end of Crete. It was reportedly home to between 30,000 and 40,000 people.<br />
One ancient outer wall remains above water level. In fact, floors, murals, and coins have also been discovered there. The research team thinks that an extremely powerful earthquake may have caused the city to drop beneath the waves.<br />

<h3>6. Thonis or Heracleion, Greece<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="405" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5290" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Heracleion-or-Thonis-1.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Heracleion-or-Thonis-1.jpg 720w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Heracleion-or-Thonis-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Heracleion-or-Thonis-1-696x392.jpg 696w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></h3>
<p>Whether one calls it Thonis or Heracleion, experts say that this underwater city is one of the oldest cities known to man. Over the years it has become the subject or setting of many different legends. One such legend claims that the god Hercules was named Heracleion because of Hercules’ visit to the city.<br />
Helen of Troy also was said to have visited the city. Founded some time in the 8th Century BC, it once played an important religious role because it was here that the temple of Amun was built. Natural catastrophes are blamed for its submersion.<br />

<p>Lake Titicaca is one of the world’s highest lakes. Locals consider it to be sacred. The Akakor Geographical diving team found a number of different walls, roads, and terraces in this 1500-year-old underwater city.<br />
They also discovered a temple that was originally 200 meters high. Experts are still uncertain as to what sunk this city.
