1. Playa del Amor, Baja California Sur

Also known as Lover’s Beach, Playa del Amor is easily accessed via water taxi from the marina. It has stunning white sand and gentle waves and is adjacent to El Arco on both the Pacific and bay sides. It is one of the most popular and yet still sublime of Los Cabos’ swimmable beaches. It’s important to note that the Pacific side is nicknamed “Divorce Beach” because the water here is not safe for swimming.

2. Playa Sisal, Yucatán

The majority of tourists to Mexico have long been attracted to the state of Quintana Roo because of its well-known combination of resorts, noteworthy nightlife, and historical sites. But the neighboring state of Yucatán presents a worthwhile alternative for frequent flyers seeking something more understated. 4. Playa Delfines, Quintana Roo

Playa Delfines in Cancun is adored by locals and tourists alike for its expansive stretch of fine, powdery sand, electric blue water, and calm atmosphere. One of the few surfing spots on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, it’s the only beach in the Hotel Zone without a high hotel tower towering over it. The atmosphere is different; despite being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, it feels like a local beach. Since this is one of the few public beaches in Cancun’s hotel district that has amenities, locals primarily use it. If you want to experience those legendary Cancun sunsets but aren’t staying in an oceanfront hotel, head to Playa Delfines instead. 

5. Playa Mayto, Jalisco

This secluded stretch, on the Cabo Corrientes coast, is one of Mexico’s longest and most remote beaches. You will find it roughly two hours south of Puerto Vallarta. Travelers must brave a dusty road that departs from Federal Highway 200 in the small town of El Tuito to get to the beach. Nearly seven miles of largely undeveloped sand, a few local lodging and dining options, and one of Jalisco’s largest sea turtle protection camps, which has led the way in research and conservation initiatives there since 2005, are found there. If you’re staying nearby, ask your hotel if there are opportunities for a day trip to the turtle camp.

6. Playa Troncones, Guerrero

In the past, tourists to Guerrero fairly flocked to the opulent beaches of Acapulco, but recently, Guerrero’s lesser-known locations have begun to draw a bit more attention from visitors. For example, Playa Troncones is about as unassuming as it gets and is frequently populated by surfers searching for the best waves of the sunny southern Pacific coast. But one of Mexico’s top beaches is located in this sleepy town. A three-mile stretch of gorgeous golden sand, cobalt-colored waves, and the laid-back way of life that initially drew travelers to Mexico now welcome them here. 

7. Playa Balandra, Baja California Sur

Playa Balandra is simply breathtaking and is located roughly a half-hour drive north of La Paz, a town on the Sea of Cortez that you should also consider visiting. Off the beaten path, this picture-perfect crescent of sand looks out over a bay that passes for a lagoon and has calm, turquoise waters lapping against its sugary shores. This is the place to go if you want to learn about marine life. Playa Balandra is the ideal location to get up close and personal with some incredible animals, and the Sea of Cortez is one of the most magnificent snorkeling locations in the world. 

8. Puerto Progreso, Yucatán

You should schedule some time to travel north and visit the beach town of Progreso and explore the ancient city of Mérida. In this port, cruise passengers disembark onto the incredible four-mile-long shipping pier before visiting the local boutiques, snack bars, and assorted eateries that line the Malécon, the town’s beautiful beachfront promenade. Take off your sandals and enjoy some fresh ceviche while gazing out at the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico and perhaps spotting a few pink flamingos under one of the beachside palapas.

9. Playa El Médano, Baja California Sur

Médano Beach is one of the few beaches in Los Cabos that is safe enough for swimming. Its length of 2.5 miles and some of the kinder waves in this region of Baja make it the primary beach in Cabo San Lucas. Okay, admittedly you just might have to jostle for space a bit at the local bars and assorted eateries that line the shore because it is also one of the busier beaches. But, hey, there’s a good reason for it: this is the hot spot. You can feel the energy in this place, and a five-star hotel or icy beach cocktail is never far away either.

10. The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, Quintana Roo

A 1.3 million-acre protected area south of Tulum, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, is a unique UNESCO World Heritage site. Some sources say this lovely location for people who love being in nature and value Mother Earth’s gifts. Here, you can find uninhabited white sand beaches, swaying palms, dense mangrove forests, and sparkling azure waters. The Mexican Caribbean is home to some of the best wildlife, including dolphins, jaguars, ocelots, spider monkeys, and whales. So, don’t forget to take your camera. Visitors can engage in pursuits like wildlife spotting, birdwatching, snorkeling, kayaking, and just “floating” down the numerous canals while taking in all the natural beauty of this protected area.

For those who want to just unwind and enjoy the beautiful beach in their bare feet while sipping a cold beer, the island is ideal. Be sure to bring your yoga mat and plenty of insect repellent, and enjoy the Caribbean-inspired seafood at Races while listening to the soft beat of steel drums. From eco-lodges to upscale beachfront hotels, there are a number of excellent options if you are looking for a place to stay.

14. Playa Mujeres, Quintana Roo

It really was not all that long ago that a visitor could count the number of hotels in Playa Mujeres on one hand. This hot spot just north of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, was somewhat of a secret. It was a bit of a hidden gem and was adored for its fine, white sand and relative seclusion from the city’s comparatively rowdier areas. The good news is that the beach’s original allure and beauty still exist, even though the scene has undoubtedly changed as more and more hotels have opened. At the couples-only Beloved Playa Mujeres, you can still find peace and tranquility, or you can bring the whole family to a bigger resort like the TRS Coral Hotel or its sibling, the Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa. 

15. Playa La Punta, Oaxaca

Playa La Punta is a section of Playa Zicatela in Puerto Escondido. It is fairly famous for being a little bit quieter than the rest of the most popular beaches in Puerto Escondido. Long known as a hippie haven, this area of town is known for its dustier roads, laid-back eateries, and abundance of hostels. However, with more and more design-forward boutique hotels and even a brand-new outdoor food court, its reputation is evolving. The idyllic beach, however, is still everyone’s preferred front-row spot for watching the sunset. One of the many boutique hotels in Puerto Escondido, like Suites La Hacienda or Hotel Santa Fe, might be a good choice if you’re looking for a place to unwind and take in the ocean view. 

16. Playa Paraiso, Quintana Roo

Just south of the famous ruins is Playa Paraiso, one of Tulum’s best beaches. In fact, it is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in the area, it is arguably one of the best beaches in Mexico. The beach is well known for its pristine waters and fine, white sand. 

This large stretch of striking sand is ideal for unwinding completely and is the center of activity in Tulum. The region’s residents come here for day trips just to admire the white, turquoise, and green color schemes. Here you can enjoy several different water sports such as swimming, scuba diving, and snorkeling. You can also relax at a beach bar, and do some sunbathing.   

17. Playa Blanca, Guerrero

Playa Blanca, which is less than 10 miles from Zihuatanejo, has that “paradise found” vibe and might actually remind you of that Caribbean beach used as a location in the classic motion picture Shawshank Redemption. This beach in Zihua is just outside of town close to the airport. We get major Robinson Crusoe vibes from this seemingly endless stretch of sparsely populated beach, which also happens to be the location of some of the most spectacular sunsets we’ve ever witnessed. There aren’t many hotels to choose from, but Las Palmas Luxury Villas will make you feel as though you have gotten away from it all and landed on your very own private beach. 

18. Costalegre, Jalisco

Costalegre is a large section of coast in southern Jalisco, close to the state of Colima’s border, and is much more than just a single beach. Every beach in the area is deserving of this list due to the area’s stunningly untamed beauty. Today, a lot of travelers visit this region of the state, south of Puerto Vallarta, to stay at opulent resort communities like Cuixmala and Careyes.  

Veteran visitors can confirm the beauty and overall list-worthiness of this place. Despite having two international airports on either side of it, it is isolated and largely unexplored. However, this region of Mexico may soon be operating at a Los Cabos level of luxury thanks to the promise of a new airport, better roads, and more upscale accommodations.

19. Playa Cerritos, Baja California Sur

Todos Santos should be on your radar if it isn’t already. The Pacific Coast town has long been a haven for surfers and artists. It is located less than an hour’s drive north of Los Cabos. 

You can anticipate finding unique shops, art galleries, and a crowd enjoying oysters and champagne. Todos Santos has always been a place where you can pick your own adventure, and it remains so today. Playa Cerritos, the most well-known beach in the region, has long been a mecca for surfers. It’s also one of the few Pacific beaches in Baja that is completely safe for swimming. And while it might be a little busier now than it was in earlier decades, it is undeniably one of Mexico’s top beaches. 

20. Playa Canalán, Nayarit

Playa Canalán is a long, wide stretch of warm, white sand bookended by lush, jungle-covered mountains. Until recently, it was completely undeveloped. Today, it’s home to the well-known One&Only Mandarina resort, the popular Canalan Beach Club, and the noteworthy Italian restaurant named Allora. These are all part of Mandarina, a newly planned community that occupies some of the most coveted real estate on the coast.

One&Only Mandarina is an all-villa resort offering 105 striking standalone structures consisting of cliff-top villas and treehouses. It’s located less than one hour north of Puerto Vallarta on Riviera Nayarit. The resort opened its doors on November 1, 2020, and offers both adventurous activities and secluded tranquility. 

21. The Lagunas de Chacahua, Oaxaca

To reach this beach, you’ll need to put in a little extra effort. Ah, but it is well worth the effort. One of the most remote and idyllic beaches in all of Mexico is reached by water taxi from Puerto Escondido via the Lagunas de Chacahua National Park. 

On the northern side of the inlet where Chacahua Lagoon empties into the Pacific Ocean, there is a beautiful beach. Surfers from all over the world, including Australia, swarm the beach huts in search of the ideal waves. In this region of Mexico, “lights out” is also taken seriously.  There is little pollution, so you can really see the stars.

Note: Expect minimal unnecessary amenities. In general, the best time to visit these beaches in Mexico is reportedly between December and April.  That’s when the weather is sunny and dry.

The Dolomites in Italy are a paradise for hikers and come complete with high peaks and vivid viewpoints. Each of the hikes here can be completed in a single day. Don’t worry about any special equipment since there are no via ferratas.  

Some of the less lengthy hikes can be hiked together and completed in one day. Unless otherwise noted, hike distances are round trip. The hiking season here in the Dolomites is from the month of June through the month of September, the trails are clear of snow. 

However, by the middle of October, the first snow can already start to fall, thus ending the hiking season. Having noted all that, get ready to take notes. Here are the 15 best day hikes in the Dolomites.

1. The Tofana Di Mezzo Hike

Tofana di Mezzo is one of the best places to get a view of the Dolomites from the shortest hiking trail. This easy trail is only 0.3 kilometers in length, still, it scales a cliff edge and includes a slippery ascent of 55 meters to the mountain’s peak. In order to reach the hiking trail, you will need to climb staircases that begin at the area’s highest cable car station, Cima Tofana.

You can scramble up the short but steep hill to Tofana di Mezzo from the hiking trail and enjoy incredible 360° views of the impressive Dolomites. Give yourself half an hour. Remember, if you have a fear of heights, you might want to forget this one. 

2. The Seceda Hike

Take the local cable car to Seceda, in Val Gardena to complete this 1.3-kilometer loop trail. You simply hike uphill to the viewpoint. The total ascent here is 110 meters.  

Hike down the trail along the ridgeline towards the peaks. When you arrive at the trail junction, head back to the station. You will need between half an hour to 45 minutes.

3. The Cinque Torri Hike

Take the convenient, quick chairlift in Cortina d’Ampezzo to the well-known hiking and rock climbing spot, Cinque Torri. Hike around in this open-air museum complete with bunkers and trenches from WWII. The chairlift and this educational area make it great for kids as it’s an easy, 1.9-kilometer loop with an ascent of 130 meters and everyone learns a bit about history here too.  Give yourself an hour for this one. If you have the time and energy, combine this hike with the Rifugio Averau and Rifugio Nuvolau hikes and make a day of it.

4. The Cadini Di Misurina Hike

This is a gorgeous, short, and easy hike not far from the Tre Cime Naturepark and Cortina d’Ampezzo. It begins at the well-known Rifugio Auronzo and ends at the popular Cadini di Misurina viewpoint. It has a length of 3.2 kilometers.  

Along with enjoying the view of the Cadini di Misurina, hiking this trail also allows you to see the beautiful “backside” of Tre Cime di Lavaredo. This trek has a total ascent of 210 meters. You will need between one and two hours to complete it. What’s more? If you enjoy short hikes but don’t like crowds, this is yet another reason to hit the trail here.

5. The Lago Di Braies Loop Hike

The lovely Lago di Braies is a lake located in Fanes-Sennes-Brais Nature Park, South Tyrol. It is nigh-famous for its majestic mountain backdrop and its clear aquamarine water. Camera bugs and hikers both enjoy this short, easy hike. 

This hike has a total ascent of 100 meters. It can be completed in between one and a half and two hours. The loop around the shimmering, aquamarine lake is also considered family-friendly. The distance of the loop is 3.7 kilometers and offers incredible views of the lake from all angles.

6. The Lagazuoi To Falzarego Pass Hike

This easy hike in Cortina d’Ampezzo starts with a cable car ride from the historic Falzarego Pass to the Lagazuoi, one of the many mountain peaks here. The view from the upper cable car station is phenomenal. There are a number of hiking trails that run through Lagazuoi.

You hike downhill from the mountain peak to your vehicle which you have hopefully parked at the Falzarego Pass. The distance is a total of four kilometers from point to point. The elevation loss is 650 meters.

Allow yourself between two to three hours to complete this attractive trek. From the trail, you will see Averau, the Cinque Torri, Croda da Lago, Gran Diedro, and Nuvolau. It’s family-friendly too. The best time to go is from June through September.

7. The Rifugio Averau And Rifugio Nuvolau Hike

If you’d enjoy a hike in Cortina d’Ampezzo that comes complete with a drink or meal with an unforgettable view, this hike is for you! The hike is 4 kilometers long and is rated easy. The total ascent is 335 meters and it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete plus count on some additional time at the rifugios.

The hike starts at Rifugio Averau which reportedly serves some of the best pasta dishes in the Dolomites. From here, you hike past Rifugio Nuvolau which sits atop Mount Nuvolau. Here, at an impressive elevation of 2,575 meters, you can enjoy 360-degree views of the mountain peaks. Hopefully, you’re lucky enough to complete the hike on a clear day. Have lunch on the outdoor terrace, and make a meal a memory! 

8. The Piz Boe Hike

This hike in Val Gardena starts at Passo Pordoi. From there you ride the cable car to Sass Pordoi. From there, it is a comparatively short yet nevertheless moderately strenuous hike with a total ascent of 430 meters. Remember, this summit of Piz Boè is the highest peak in the Sella Group. Enjoy the panoramic views from here. They are said to be breathtaking and well worth the effort. Allow yourselves between two and four hours for this noteworthy hike.

The best time to take this hike is always early in the day when there are fewer chances of any crowds. The best time of the year to do it is between the end of June and the end of September. If you wish to avoid any remaining snow, wait until September, for sure!

9. The Cinque Torri And The Rifugio Averau And Rifugio Nuvolau Hikes

Combine two of arguably the best day hikes here into a slightly long but more epic hiking adventure. This combo hike in Cortina d’Ampezzo is an exceptionally good idea if you only have a single day here in the Dolomites. Despite the fact that you are combining two treks, the total distance is still relatively short at only six kilometers so it’s still workable.

Rated easy to moderate, this two-trek hike has a total ascent of 465 meters. Allow yourself between two and a half to three hours to complete this hike and don’t forget to plan on spending additional time at the popular rifugios. The views are no less than gorgeous, you get a great meal and can enjoy memorable views of the Dolomites.

10. The Alpe Di Siusi Hike

Alpe di Siusi in the Dolomites is Europe’s highest alpine meadow. It offers travelers wonderful views and plenty of natural beauty. With cabins, hotels, and rifugios scattered ‘cross the landscape, there are several options in terms of accommodations.

Perhaps the best way to enjoy the area is to take this hike from comfy Compatsch to striking Saltria. The total distance of this adventure is under seven kilometers. This easy, downhill hike includes a 260-meter descent.    

You will need between two and three hours here plus whatever time you wish to spend at the local rifugios. Saltria is the lowest point, and you can take a bus ride back to the starting point at Compatsch and avoid a lengthy, unnecessary hike up again. Need more? The hillsides here are rife with more biking and hiking trails.

11. The Tre Cime Di Lavaredo Hike

One of the best hikes in the Dolomites is the loop around the triple peaks of Tre Cime di Lavaredo. These peaks are the symbol of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hike is an essential one in the Dolomites and is 8.8 kilometers long with a total ascent of 425 meters. It takes about 2.5 to five hours to complete and is rated as moderate in difficulty. The hike is located near Cortina d’Ampezzo.

This is a loop hike that takes you around the trio of huge rock pillars. What’s more, you can only see the nigh-iconic north faces from this specific hiking trail. Visit in the summer and you’ll also enjoy seeing a landscape carpeted with wildflowers. This trail also offers numerous detours to alpine lakes and additional viewpoints.

12. The Adolf Munkel Weg To Geisler Alm Hike

The Adolf Munkel Weg Trail is a point-to-point hiking trail in Val di Funes that runs right along the base of the awesome Odle-Geisler mountain group. The hike is actually almost 10 kilometers with a total ascent of 440 meters and is officially rated as moderate in difficulty. Give yourself between four and six hours for this one so you can take a break at the huts.  

To make the trek more manageable, some hikers have shortened it and actually turned it into a loop hike. They start and end the hike from one parking lot. While you will be privy to some incredible views of the mountains and can visit a couple of rifugios, some veteran visitors claim the major drawing point here is just enjoying lunch at a mountain hut.

13. The Lago Di Sorapis Hike

Also known as the Lake Sorapis hike, you will discover the trailhead just a short drive away from Cortina d’Ampezzo. However, if you plan to hike it in the summer, be prepared to deal with crowds. While most hikers go out and back on the popular main trail, you can actually make this a much quieter loop trail hike–Lago di Sorapis and Forcella Marcuoira–if you wish.  Thus, depending on your choice, the distance fluctuates between 11.6 to 12.7 kilometers and the total ascent of will be between 460 meters to 775 meters. Thus, the hike can be between moderate and strenuous and require between three to seven hours to complete.

14. The Lago Federa And Croda Dal Lago Circuit Hike

The Croda da Lago Circuit hike is possibly one of the most underrated and interesting hikes in all of the Dolomites. This loop trail in Cortina d’Ampezzo leads you around the Croda da Lago mountains, has a total distance of 12.8 kilometers and a total ascent of 900 meters. Pencil in between 4.5 and six hours for this moderate to strenuous trek.

The trail takes you through verdant woods and on your way to the alpine lake, Lago Federa, you will also enjoy both panoramic and close-up views of Croda da Lago. This hike is essentially a much less crowded hike that offers stunning views. During the summer months, the Dolomites can be a busy place to visit, but this trail is an exception.   

15. The Puez-Odle Altopiano Hike

This point-to-point hike has a total distance of 17 kilometers along some of the Dolomites’ highest mountain peaks. Your journey begins with a comfy cable car ride that takes you up into the mountains, shaving off a good portion of your climb. This hike in Val Gardena includes a total descent of 1,500 meters and 850 meters of climbing.  

Count on spending between six to nine hours on this one. It is rated as strenuous but some say that both the amount of climbing and the length of the trek are “just enough” to make the adventure welcomingly challenging. Additionally, the jaw-dropping panoramic views while you hike in these high peaks are an ample reward for the effort. Some hikers say this is not only one of the best day hikes in the Dolomites but in the entire country.

Nevertheless, it is rated as difficult and you will need to purchase a Gorge Access Permit for $6.00. Here you will hike The Downstream Trail through nigh-tantalizing terrain to the beautiful base of a waterfall.

Keep in mind, the topography changes more than once here. You will need to traverse big boulders, rough riverbeds, and other assorted obstacles. Essentially, this is no hike for children and your hiking boots will get wet. After your hike, go for a dip in the pools at the waterfalls’ base. Park staff strongly suggest wearing a lifejacket.

7. The Mossy Ridge Trail Hike

Percy Warner Park offers visitors a free scenic hike at the Mossy Ridge Trail. It is rated as moderately challenging due largely to the multiple changes in terrain. It is less than five miles and provides hikers with memorable views of hills and hardwood forests in Nashville.

Be sure that you stick to the well-marked trail. If you ignore the numerous signs you will end up lost or at the local overnight campsite and have to hike almost six miles back to your vehicle.

9. The Fiery Gizzard Trail Hike

This adventurous free day hike in South Cumberland State Park is just under 10 miles and is considered to be difficult. The park is roughly a 90-minute drive out of the city. To complete this trek you need to hike the Fiery Gizzard Trail to Raven Loop.

Interestingly, Backpacker magazine deemed this hike to be “one of the best 25 hikes” in the country. The trail runs along a little creek and the scenery is beautiful. Again though, it is generally only for experienced hikers.  

Portions of this trail are said by some to be “a natural obstacle course” and crawling over big boulders is par for the course. Be patient. Stick with it. In the end, it is worth the trouble.

10. The Foster Falls Climber’s Loop Hike

If you’re looking for a free hike near Nashville, that is not quite as difficult as the previously mentioned Fiery Gizzard Trail, South Cumberland State Park is also the home of the near-famous Foster Falls Climber’s Loop. It is a shorter, less difficult, two-mile hiking trail that is only rated as moderately difficult but arguably equally beautiful. The trailhead is located at the viewing platform that overlooks the famous falls.

From there you hike down to the falls’ base. There you will discover a pretty plunge pool that also serves as a super swimming hole on hot, sunny days. Even though this hike is officially rated as “moderately difficult”, you can manage it with small kids if you’re capable of helping them over some of the more challenging spots.

11. The Fall Creek Falls Trail Hike

Last but not necessarily least, this final free hike is offered in the Fall Creek Falls State Park a good two hours drive out of Nashville. It is rated a moderate hike that takes you to the highest free-fall waterfall east of the mighty Mississippi River.

This hike, and other offered activities and attractions, help to make this park one of the state’s “most visited.” Perhaps the top attraction here is the park’s incredible namesake falls. If you want to do more hiking there, camp outdoors there or rent a cabin and try your hand (or foot?) at hiking the remainder of the 50+ miles of hiking trails there.

10. Hike To The Top Of Mount Sinai

Mount Sinai is a world-famous sacred pilgrimage site for Christians, Jews, and Muslims in Egypt. This is where the Old Testament notes that Moses was given the Ten Commandments. Anyone who hikes here starts their trek at the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Saint Catherine’s Monastery. Before dawn, they choose between the challenging Steps of Penitence trail or the wider, easier Camel Path. Either way, the hike to the summit is more than six kilometers in total and you can enjoy seeing the sunrise from the summit.

11. Go Scuba Diving In The Red Sea

As previously noted, Egypt is actually a surprisingly exceptional place to go scuba diving if you know where to go and are the least bit adventurous. Believe it or not, the Red Sea has long been one of the top scuba diving locations on the planet. The water here is usually welcomingly warm and the visibility is excellent. Here you will discover pristine reefs and a number of different shipwrecks to explore as well. Undoubtedly, the Red Sea should be on your scuba diving bucket list too.

12. See Marsa Alam and Hurghada

The resort town of Marsa Alam on the Red Sea is growing in popularity. Some people come here just to see sea turtles on Abu Dabab Beach. It’s also a hot spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, and kitesurfing.  

Also on the Red Sea, just north of Marsa Alam, is Hurghada. Europeans already know this is a popular winter destination. The beaches here are lined with upscale resorts. Recommended activities here include kitesurfing, windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and swimming with the dolphins. You can also visit the Giftun Islands or Luxor.

13. Visit The Valley Of The Kings

The Valley of the Kings is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites. It is also a royal burial ground in Egypt with more than 60 tombs of Egyptian rulers from 1539 to 1075 BC. All the tombs here are exquisitely decorated.  

Only a handful are open to the public. Your main entrance ticket includes eight tombs, three of which you can visit. If you’d care to visit the tombs of Tutankhamun, Seti I, and Ramesses V and VI, you will have to pay an extra fee.  

14. Venture Into The Tomb Of Nefertari   

Travel to the famous Valley of the Queens; the official burial site of all the pharaohs’ wives. The tombs here are less grand and smaller in size than those in the previously mentioned Valley of the Kings. There is, however, one noteworthy exception, the tomb of the famous Queen Nefertari. The incredible tomb of Queen Nefertari is actually one of Egypt’s most spectacular. The colors are a lot more vibrant and the degree of detail is more memorable than what you may see anywhere else in Egypt.

Queen Hatshepsut ruled Egypt for more than two decades and was one of the world’s most powerful female rulers. You will find her mortuary temple on Deir el-Bahri’s impressive cliffs. It’s arguably one of the most beautiful temples and architectural achievements in Egypt.

Its colonnaded structure actually tells a story. The Birth Colonnade tells the tale of Hatshepsut’s divine creation. The Punt Colonnade speaks to her travels to Punt and the valuable goods with which she returned. Visit the impressive Temple of Anubis and the Temple of Hathor too.  

16. Check Out The Mortuary Temple Of Ramesses III 

This impressive mortuary temple is located at Medinet Habu on the West Bank of Luxor. It is a large temple complex that is dedicated to Ramesses III. The temple features several courtyards, peristyle hals, and pylons highlighted with well-known reliefs of the Sea People’s defeat during Ramesses III’s reign. This temple has an orthodox design and resembles the neighboring mortuary temple of Ramesses II a.k.a. The Ramesseum.

Karnak Temple is a popular tourist destination and attracts many visitors every year. It is second only to the Pyramids of Giza in terms of popularity. It is second only to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, this huge Karnak Temple is the world’s largest temple complex.

The temple in Edfu is dedicated to the well-known god Horus and was constructed in the Ptolemaic period somewhere between 237 and 57 BC. Despite being more than 2000 years old, this temple is in excellent condition and the first pylon is almost perfect. You can visit this temple on a drive between Aswan and Luxor or even while you are on certain Nile cruises. Take a good look and you will get a good idea about just how these temples once looked and even how they were first built.  

21. Visit The Temple Of Kom Ombo

The famous Temple of Kom Ombo, in the village of the same name, is a unique temple that was built for two different gods. One-half of the temple complex is dedicated to the falcon-headed god named Horus. The other half is dedicated to the crocodile-headed known as Sobek. Sobek was the god of fertility of the land by the Nile while Horus was the god of healing, kingship, protection, the sky, and the sun. Stop and see it as you drive from Aswan to Luxor, on a cruise, or even a day trip.

22. Travel To The Twin Temples

Abu Simbel is one of Egypt’s most stunning monuments found on the bank of lovely Lake Nasser. This pair of twin temples were constructed by Ramesses II more than 3,000 years ago and have survived the ravages of time. More importantly, following the construction of the massive Aswan High Dam, this entire ancient complex was taken apart, moved to higher ground, and reassembled.  

You can reach the temples on a day trip from either Cairo or Aswan. Driving there is cheaper but takes more time. Flying takes less time but is costlier.

The famous Philae Temple is one of Egypt’s most well-preserved Ptolemaic temples. It was constructed during the Ptolemaic period, between 332 and 30 BC. At least two-thirds of the remaining structures in the complex were built at that time.

The temple was officially dedicated to Isis, but Hathor and Osiris were honored here as well. In 1902 following the erection of the Aswan Old Dam, all of Philae Island, including the temples, was submerged. The temples were painstakingly dismantled and reassembled on the neighboring island of Agilkia in the 1960s.

The wondrous White Desert is an Egyptian national park nestled in the Western Desert in the Sahara. 1. The Bamboo Forest, Maui

The Bamboo Forest is located along the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakala National Park on the Road to Hana on the island of Maui. The trail is roughly four miles in length but will take you to both the Waimoku Falls and Makahiku Falls. The forest is densely packed with trees that provide visitors with both shade and atmosphere. 

Here insects whirl and clack and birds twitter. For safety reasons, avoid swimming at the top or bottom of the falls. Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic scene seen only by those willing to make the hike.

2. Kawela Bay, Oahu

Kawela Bay is a secluded beach nestled near Oahu’s northern tip. The area is protected by the North Shore Community Land Trust in accordance with the wishes of local residents. As this goes to press, it remains relatively undeveloped despite previously proposed development plans.

It is highlighted by unique banyan trees and has even appeared in such feature films as The Hunger Games: Catching Fires and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It’s a great place to reconnect with nature and avoid crowds. Here you can picnic, paddleboard, and swim if you don’t mind access to few facilities.

3. The Kalalau Trail, Kauai

The well-known Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile-long trail that leads along the striking Na Pali Coast on the island of Kauai. It is a challenging, remote, rugged yet exceptionally beautiful trail. In fact, hiking parts of this trail requires a permit, and going with a guide is recommended. You will discover a number of superb waterfalls and sublime beaches such as the somewhat secluded and cozy Kalalau Beach, a.k.a. the Secret Beach. You are only allowed to camp along this trail in two places. There are composting toilets, but no seating areas, or potable water.

4. The Sanju Pagoda, Oahu

You will find this three-level structure on the isle of Oahu in Honolulu Memorial Park. It is a large replica of the revered Minami Hoke-ji Temple located in Nara, Japan.  The building stands 119 feet high and features fine Japanese designs.

The structure is built out of concrete, not wood. It is also in the official National Register of Historic Places. It dates back to 1966 and is actually one of the tallest temples in the country, perhaps even the world. Currently unsafe to enter, but you can still appreciate it from the outside.

5. Raëlian UFO Peace Park, Big Island

The distinctive Raëlian UFO Peace Park is a unique sculpture park located in Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Here you’ll see several different sculptures and a model of an unusual galactic embassy the Raelian UFO religious group wants to build there. The Raelian religion, founded by Claude “Ral” Vorilhon, believes life here was created by aliens known as the Elohim. The main sculpture is a large nude woman with the official Raelian symbol on her chest. There are also sculptures of chameleons, native birds, peacocks, and a sea turtle too.

6. Keahiakawelo, Lanai

Also called the Garden of the Gods, Keahiakawelo, also known as the Garden of the Gods, is a group of noteworthy natural rock formations on Lanai. Here the reddish, arid earth is dotted with various shapes and sizes of boulders. It’s speculated that previous visitors created these tiny towers and designs.

Local legend warns that visitors who tamper with these stones risk the wrath of ancient gods. Others note that two men from Lanai and Molokai were competing to see who could keep a fire burning the longest. Their efforts to win created this place.

7. Harold L. Lyon Arboretum, Oahu

This hidden gem in Honolulu is actually named after the ex-director of the Hawaii Sugar Planters’ Association who also studied plant diseases. Tourists typically come to this area to see the Manoa Falls and often ignore this fertile, lush garden. Thus, this is a great place to get off the beaten path especially if you are at all interested in plants and nature. These pretty pebble-like pieces of glass accumulated on this beach are the result of the ebb and flow of ocean waves smoothing and removing the sharp edges of broken bottles and other glass discarded in the area.

9. The Kaumana Lava Tubes, Big Island

Close to Hilo, the intriguing Kaumana Lava Tubes are a comparatively unknown hidden gem on the popular Big Island. These tubes are the result of hot volcanic lava forcefully flowing through the earth. Travel writers report that the tubes here are actually more natural and authentic than other more commercialized tubes elsewhere. The tubes can be explored, but there are no official guides here, so you are solely responsible for your own safety. If you want to deeply explore these caverns, you’ll need a flashlight. 10. The Coco Palms Resort, Kauai

If you appreciate history and tradition, visit the famous Coco Palms Resort in Wailua. This resort was the first resort on the entire island. It opened back in the 1950s and played host to such famous folks as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. This once pricey and opulent place was the preferred playground for the day’s rich and famous. In 1992 it was trashed by Hurricane Iniki and more recently damaged by a fire. Now ruined, the building’s shell has yet to be razed because the demolition plans remain in legal limbo due to disputes over land ownership.

In other words, over time the sand dunes were compacted by pressure, lost their porosity, and turned to stone. Today, they present an olden, otherworldly, striking sand-colored contrast to the blue of the sea. Hike here or rent a 4WD vehicle as the road here is in pretty bad shape!  

15. The Waimanu Valley, Big Island

The Waimanu Valley is a hidden gem and Hamakua Coast’s largest valley. Tourists avoid it because the journey there includes a nine-mile hike. The Muliwai Trail takes you by splashing cascades and picturesque streams.

The path can become quite slick so be sure to pack trekking poles with your other hiking equipment. You should also reserve a camping spot in advance. The black sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing and the crystal-clear water is good for swimming. The views are stunning with a lush valley on one side and water on the other.

16. The Makauwahi Cave, Kauai

The Makauwahi Cave is an under-visited hidden gem. It is also one of the island’s largest caves. The cave covers the subjects of archeology, history, and, of course, nature.  

Here you’ll discover fascinating fossils that’ll give you a glimpse into the island’s past. Like some ancient diary, the cave’s layers tell a tale of Kauai’s history. Explore this sinkhole, formed from the inward collapse of a fantastic fossilized sand dune.  

Study plant and animal fossils that were here before man. Visit Mahaulepu Beach too. It was a shooting location for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

17. Ching’s Pond, Maui

Also popularly known as the Blue Sapphire Pools, Ching’s Pond is hidden from the road. This is a popular, local hangout and while it is quiet on weekdays, it is often crowded on the weekends. The bubbly Palauhulu Stream gently flows through here beneath a bridge.

Below that bridge, you will spot some striking sapphire pools. It’s so pretty you’d almost think fairies and nymphs live here. There are but two hiking trails to reach this spot. The less challenging trail is marked by a big tree just 50 feet from the bridge.

18. The Kau Desert, Big Island

Hawaii’s Big Island is home to the expansive Kau Desert. This lunar-like landscape includes a natural floor of gravel, sand, and volcanic ash dotted with boulders and solidified lava. The desolate landscape is almost completely devoid of wildlife and green plants.  

The rain that does fall on this torrid terrain is generally too acidic to be beneficial. The water droplets in the air mix with the sulfur dioxide from the various volcanic vents here to create toxic rain. Hikers who plan on braving this place should remember that if the volcanoes are too active, the trails may be closed.

The critically-acclaimed Vintage Cave Club is said to be one of the most luxurious (albeit costly) restaurants in the state. 20. Lanai Cat Sanctuary, Lanai

“What’s new pussycat?” If you like cuddly cats, the Lanai Cat Sanctuary is the purr-fect place for you. Here you will find 500 former furry feline strays that have finally found a home at this 25,000-foot furball refuge.

Opened in 2009, this serval sanctuary was founded to rescue and protect unwanted cats and provide them with a safe place to live. By protecting pussies, the sanctuary also aids in the survival of another animal, the ua’u bird. You can come here, play with the local lynxes, lend a paw, and even make a donation.    

21. The Pineapple Garden Maze, Oahu

Visit the famous Dole Pineapple Plantation and lose yourself in the popular Pineapple Garden Maze. Those in the know report that this is the largest plant maze on the planet. This pineapple puzzle features 14,000 plants, spans an area of two acres, and includes two and a half miles’ worth of paths. Naturally, some paths lead nowhere, and others are intentionally designed to mislead and confuse people trying to make it through the maze. A visit to the Hindu Himalayan Academy might make you feel like you’re in some foreign land like Tibet or Nepal. Ah, but rather than the majestic Himalayan Mountains, the academy is in the heart of a tropical landscape. This memorable monastery was founded by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami. It is a peaceful place where Western ways and Polynesian costumes merge with assorted Eastern religions. This sanctuary serves as both a “global outreach” and a Hindu education center that follows the teachings of numerous gurus from southern India and Sri Lanka.

23. Shangri La, Oahu

In this case, the literary-inspired name Shangri La concerns a “hidden” collection of interesting Islamic art that focuses on Hinduism and Islam. Philanthropist Doris Duke is the founder of this collection found outside of Honolulu. Shangri La was once Duke’s official Hawaiian hideaway.

She designed it inspired by her international travels. Here you can see embroideries, paintings, and sculptures that she collected from various places over a number of years. The building overlooks the ocean. It includes an Iranian-style pavilion and a big saltwater pool too.

24. The Blue Room, Kauai

The Blue Room in Hawaii is another amazing natural wonder here in Hawaii. You’ll find this hidden gem in the beautiful Waikapalae wet cave situated in Kauai. The Blue Room is “hidden” in the back of a cavern entrance and is thus named because it shines with a shade of deep blue when the level of the water is high enough.

25. The Liljestrand House, Oahu

Historic Liljestrand House was constructed over half a century ago. The Liljestrand couple’s former residence remains an extraordinary example of American-Russian architect, Vladimir Ossipoff’s modernist work. History buffs will also enjoy this place as it was actually the official site of the infamous Battle of Barrosa back in 1811. In fact, the popular Novo Sancti Petri is located at the south end of this beach and includes the defensive tower known as Torre Bermeja. It’s conveniently close to the La Barrosa highway.

3. Son Bou, Menorca

Son Bou is the best of a trio of Blue Flag beaches in Menorca. It is 50 meters wide and 2.5 kilometers in length. Thus, it is also Menorca’s longest beach. This beach is situated between Punta Rodona and Cap de ses Penyes.  

It has its own car park so it is easily accessible via automobile. From the parking lot, you simply take the path through the sand dunes to the beach. It comes complete with fine, pale sand, crystal clear water, several beach bars, and businesses where you can rent kayaks and pedalos. If you like birds, be sure to visit the nearby protected wetland where you’ll see many of them.  

4. El Saler, Valencia

El Saler is a pebbled, golden-sand beach located on the edge of L’Albufera Natural Park, outside of Valencia. It is easily accessible by foot, boat, or motor vehicle. This Blue Flag beach is yet another beach surrounded by peaceful pine forests and natural sand dunes.

It is 35 meters wide and 2800 meters long. 6. Bakio, Basque Country

Experts say it has a trio of differentiated sections.

The central peak is named El Callejon. The western section has a rough right-hander that doesn’t break every day. Peñas Rojas has a rock and sand seabed that provides surfers with superb waves. Not into surfing? Stroll the long, waterfront promenade and take in the views. Dine on pintxos, the Basque version of tapas, at one of the local beach bars.

7. Las Cucharas, Lanzarote
