Across the globe, artists create sculptures of icons. Monuments are made to commemorate memorable historical figures, leaders and moments. As we’ve previously noted, many of them are downright amazing. After many years of work and millions of dollars spent, here are 20 of the most enormous monuments and statues on earth.

20. “Forever Marilyn”

Also listed on this website as one of the “most amazing giant sculptures,” it took Chinese artists two years to complete this work. This 25-foot tall sculpture was inspired by the 1955 movie “The Seven Year Itch.” It’s been displayed both the USA and Australia.

19.  The statue of Ganesha

This eye-catching bright pink giant statue of Ganesha is a genuine tourist attraction. This statue of the much-loved and famous Hindu god can be found in Thailand in the province of Chachoengsao. It stands 52 feet high and is 78 feet wide.

18. The statue of Mevlana Rumi

Mevlana Rumi was a man of many talents. He was a well-known 13th-century Muslim poet, Islamic scholar, jurist, Sufi mystic, and theologian. This statue of him is 66 feet high (including the foundation). It was created by a sculptor named Eray Okkan.

17. The Mansu Hill Grand Monument

The main part of this monument consists of a pair of tall statues of former North Korean leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. In 2012 a new statue of Kim Jong-il after the late leader’s death. It is 73 feet high.

16. The Christ the Redeemer

The famous Christ the Redeemer statue of Jesus Christ can be found in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This spiritually-inspiring statue is over 2,000 feet above the popular city. It’s 100 feet tall and is one of the world’s seven new wonders.

15. The Youth Mao Zedong Statue

Located in Hunan Province of China, this statue is over 105 feet tall. The work is actually an artistic depiction of Chairman Mao Zedong when he was only 32 years old. The price tag to create this piece was roughly $35 million.

14. The Merlion of Sentosa

Standing on Singapore’s popular Sentosa Island, the giant Merlion of Sentosa towers 121 feet into the air. The Merlion is a lesser-known mythical creature with the body of a fish and the head of a lion. It’s also the official “national personification” of Singapore.

13. The Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue

Erected in 2008, the impressive Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue s towers 130 feet into the sky. It depicts the infamous historical figure on horseback. It is situated atop the aptly named Genghis Khan Statue Complex and cost about $5 million to build.

12. The rock sculpture of Decebalus

Travel to the Iron Gates not far from the city of Orsova located in Romania. There you’ll see the famous face of Decebalus, Dacia’s last king. Carved out of a rocky outcrop found on the Danube River, it’s over 130 feet tall.

11.  The Lord Murugan statue

The statue of Lord Murugan is ensconced outside of the popular Batu Caves in Selangor, Malaysia. At a height of 140 feet, it’s the tallest statue in the country and required 300 liters of gold paint and 250 tons of steel to build.

10. The African Renaissance Monument

The well-known African Renaissance Monument is 160 feet tall. Ensconced in Dakar, in Senegal, it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Specifically, it’s a statue of a man, woman, and child. The statue was built over a period of four years and cost about $27 million.

9. The Christ the King monument

Found in Swiebodzin, Poland, The famous Christ the King monument towers 172 feet high. (Just the crown alone is over 10 feet tall.) The locals reportedly donated all the money required to create the stunning monument.

8.  The Motherland Monument

The impressive Motherland Monument is located in Kiev in Ukraine. It stands over 200 feet tall and notes the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany. It is so tall that it can actually be seen from several different places in Kiev.

7. The Chaukhtatgyi Buddha

This huge reclining buddha is located in a popular temple in Yangon in Myanmar. It’s one of the largest statues in Burma as it is over 217 feet in length. It includes a crown encrusted in diamonds and was officially consecrated in 1973.

6. The Leshan Giant Buddha

This huge, detailed statue is 233 feet tall. It was carved on the Xiguo Peak back during the Tang Dynasty. Found in the beautiful Mount Emei Scenic Area, it’s also part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest stone Buddha on Earth.

5. Rodina-Mat zovyot

Also known as “The Motherland Calls,” this 279-foot tall statue was dedicated in 1967. It’s considered a feat of complex engineering because of the position of the sword, left hand and the overall extended posture of the figure. It weighs in at 7,900+ tons.

4. The Statue of Liberty

A gift from France, the iconic Statue of Liberty stands tall on New York Harbor’s world-famous Liberty Island. From ground level to the torch flame tip it is 305 feet high. The robed figure is a representation of the Roman goddess Libertas.

3. Emperors Yan & Huang

At a height of over 347 feet, this is the fifth tallest statue on the planet. These impressive emperors are situated in the Henan province of China. The work is meant to celebrate both the economy and politics.

2. The Guan Yin statue

The famous statue of Guan Yin of the South Sea of Sanya stands 354 feet high. This exceptionally-designed work is the world’s fourth-tallest statue. This statute has three different perspectives. One third faces inland and the other two-thirds look out over the South China Sea.

1. The Laykyun Sekkya Buddha

Myanmar’s Laykyun Sekkya Buddha is over 380 feet tall. Located atop the Po Kaung Hills, a statue of the now-famous Gautama Buddha. It took almost 12 years to build. At the foot of this statue is the popular the world’s largest reclining Buddha, the Monywa Buddha.

Nature can be both beautiful and even near magical.  Indeed, strolling ‘neath a canopy of colorful, thriving trees in a true tree tunnel on a summer afternoon can be a truly enjoyable experience.  Some of the tree tunnels are happy coincidences.  Some tree tunnels grow naturally.

Other tree tunnels are formed with a bit of assistance from some talented, patient professional gardeners to be certain they work within their surrounding urban environs.  Indeed, while trees do grow slowly, they are surprisingly receptive in terms of having their growth altered.  With a bit of strong, persistent force, even trees can be modeled into various shapes.

But natural or not, tree tunnels can often cast their spell upon visitors who stroll under their lush boughs.  Some sources claim that there are tree tunnels that are so impressive that they down through the years they have inspired various architects to create incredible arches or even a stunning vaulted ceiling in some olden gothic cathedral.

Furthermore, a number of ancient societies thought trees were sacred.  They even carefully maintained holy groves of ancient trees.  When you visit the beautiful places pictured in this article you will no doubt understand why.    

1.  The Dark Hedges, Northern Ireland

This atmospheric tunnel of beech trees is located on Bregagh Road between the villages of Stranocum and Armoy in County Antrim.  It was made famous from its use in the popular HBO television show Game of Thrones.

2.  ‘Cherry Blossom Avenue’, Germany

Back in the 1980s,  the Heerstrasse in Bonn was planted with Japanese cherry blossom trees.  Now, this Nordstadt neighborhood is known as “Cherry Blossom Avenue.”  It’s beautiful pink boughs can be seen spreading out over the old cobblestone streets near the Beethoven House.   

3.  Wisteria Flower Tunnel, Japan

You’ll find this colorful tunnel in the city of Kitakyushu in the Kawachi Fuji Garden.  Here, roughly six hours out of Tokyo, you’ll discover 150 flowering Wisteria plants from at least 20 different species.  Try to see it between late April and mid-May.

4.  Oak Alley, Louisiana

Oak Alley is near Oak Alley Plantation on the outskirts of New Orleans, Louisiana.  This alleyway along the mighty Mississippi River is still comparatively unknown to typical tourists.  Nevertheless, this quiet, enchanting spot is fast becoming an iconic one, especially with photo buffs.

5.  Jacarandas Walk, South Africa

The Jacarandas Walk in Pretoria, South Africa includes over 70,000 Jacaranda trees.  Many varieties of this native South American plant were imported to South Africa over a century ago.  The best time to visit is in October when they erupt in pretty purple-blue.

6.  Tunnel of Love, Ukraine

Not to be confused with the 1987 Bruce Springsteen song, this Tunnel of Love is a special stretch of industrial railway outside of Klevan.  It’s surrounded by lush green arches and has become a fave pic place for couples.

7.  Street in Jerez, Spain

This is a street in the historic city of Jerez de la Frontera (or Jerez).  Near famous for its vineyards, many of the streets here are shaded by grape leaves from vines that climb the buildings’ walls.

8.  Ginkgo Tree Tunnel, Japan

In Tokyo, there are 65,000 ginkgo trees lining the streets.  They are referred to as “the bearers of hope” because a number of the trees survived the Hiroshima bombing.  This tree tunnel is in the garden of the famous Meiji Shrine.

9.  Blossom Path, Japan

You can enjoy this amazing view in more than one place be it Kyoto, Japan or even San Francisco, California.  This blossom path is part of what’s called a Sakura alley.  Cherry tree flowers are also known as Sakura flowers.

10.  Bamboo Path, Japan

This path can be found in a grove in Kyoto.  It’s both aesthetic and peaceful.  Bamboo, of course, is a giant, exotic grass that is a fascinating part of Japanese culture.  It has great potential as a truly “green” resource.

If you want to stroll down this particular tree tunnel you will have to visit the city of St. Louis in Oregon.  Some claim this is one of the prettiest places in the US.

If you think this tree tunnel is a spot you’d like to see in person then you’ll have to buy a ticket to The Netherlands.  Once there you’ll need to head to the Old Grove.

This tunnel, also known to some as the Misty Tree Tunnel is also in the city of St. Louis, Oregon.  Some sources state it’s one of the most gorgeous tree tunnels in the world.

15.  Laburnum Tunnel, UK

The Laburnum Tunnel is situated in the Bodnant Gardens in Wales.  It bursts into colorful life in late spring complete with a lively cascade of yellows.  The entrepreneur Henry Davis Pochin designed the gardens in the late 1800s.

The Parque Francisco Alvarado, located in the city Zarcero, is one of Costa Rica’s most popular attractions.  The numerous unique topiary shapes and figures have been delighting tourists for roughly half a century.

Known as Mill Lane, this public path can be found in the South Downs National Park in the hamlet of Halnaker in West Sussex.  It follows an ancient trail along Stane Street.

The little Gyeonghwa Station in Jinhae is a world-famous place to see cherry blossoms.  Services at this station were discontinued back in 2006.  Travelers now come here just to take in the beauty of this site.

Montenegro Perast

Oddly, Perast has but one main street, 17 Italianate palazzos, and 16 churches. Board a boat to Our Lady of the Rock, and St. George. Paddle around in the Bay of Kotor too.

Netherlands Keukenhof

From March to May you can check out this blooming, 80-acre, psychedelic flower field. This is actually one of the largest flower gardens in the world. It includes more than 7 million daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths, and more.

Norway Trolltunga

The Golden Gates of Kiev

The Golden Gates of Kiev were originally a part of the city’s walls. Built in 1037 by Yaroslav the Wise, these gates formed an important part of the city’s defenses. Although these gates eventually fell into disrepair, they continued to be used for about seven hundred years. The gate was entirely reconstructed in 1982, and it currently serves as a museum.

Sofiyivsky Park

Sofiyivsky Park is a large park created by landscape architect Ludwig Metzel toward the end of the 18 th century. Located in Uman, this park is beautifully decorated with waterfalls, sculptures, artificial cliffs and caves, and it is home to more than two thousand different species of trees and plants. Literature enthusiasts will be intrigued to know that parts of the park were designed to illustrate sections of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.

Vorontsovsky Palace

The Vorontsovsky Palace (or Vorontsov’s Palace) is located in the city of Alupka. This palace was built between 1830 and 1848 by Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov. The palace sits at the feet of the striking Crimean mountains, and its architecture is a curious but beautiful mix of western and eastern influences.

Potemkin Stairs

The Potemkin Stairs are located in the city of Odessa. This large stairway features 192 sandstone steps and a number of landings. It was designed to create an unusual optical illusion: when viewed from the top, only the landings are visible. When viewed from the bottom, the landings are hidden from sight and only the steps can be seen. These stairs may be most famous for their appearance in the 1925 movie The Battleship Potemkin.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra

Kiev Pechersk Lavra (also called the Kiev Monastery of the Caves) is a beautiful monastery that is built on a series of caves. Like the St. Sophia Cathedral, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This site has a long history. It was founded as a cave monastery in 1015, and numerous beautiful buildings were later built, including a large and ornate bell tower and a number of churches.

Khersones Tavriysky

Khersones Tavriysky is the site of an unusual find: an ancient Greek colony. Researchers estimate that the colony was established around two thousand five hundred years ago, and archeological sites around the area have unearthed an ancient temple, an amphitheater, tombs, and the remains of towers. Located near the modern-day town of Sevastopol, this spot is sometimes referred to as a “Russian Troy.”

Khotyn Fortress

The Khotyn Fortress is a large fortress built in Khotyn, Ukraine. This fortress, which overlooks the Dniester river, was originally built in 1325, and it has been added onto over the centuries. This large and powerful fortress has been used as the backdrop for a number of adventure movies.
