The trail is also comparatively flat which makes it a good choice for folks who like to bring their dogs with them and families traveling with their kids.

Keep a lookout for lots of local wildlife too! Remember though, this trail’s popularity can translate to difficult parking. The best thing to do is get there a bit early or wait for the morning hikers to start leaving to get a parking place. As always, when day hiking, be sure to pack your sunscreen! Even a short hike can result in a sunburn.

2. The Twin Falls and Downstream Trail Hike

Rugged Rock Island State Park is located an hour and 45 minutes from Nashville and offers travelers a free, moderately easy hike with beautiful twin waterfalls and a distance of less than two miles. The Downstream Trail takes you over easy terrain to twin waterfalls. Twin Falls is undoubtedly the park’s biggest draw and yet there is more to experience than just the trails. 4. The Narrows of the Harpeth Hike

Harpeth River State Park is located about half an hour from Nashville. It offers visitors a free, easy, one-mile hike that not only features a historic tunnel waterfall but combines a striking natural landscape with local history. Here you follow the Narrows Trail alongside the rushing Harpeth River.

The plunging waterfall coming out of a man-made tunnel is the trail’s major attraction. This tunnel was constructed in 1819 to utilize the power of the water to run a nearby ironworks operation. Although the iron forge has been gone for many years, the pool and waterfall born of this tunnel remain a popular place. This part of the Harpeth is also a great place for kayaking and canoeing. 5. The Shelby Bottoms Greenway Hike

6. The Cummins Falls Hike

This hike in Cummins Falls Park in Cookeville about one and a half hours out of Nashville is just three miles. Nevertheless, it is rated as difficult and you will need to purchase a Gorge Access Permit for $6.00. Here you will hike The Downstream Trail through nigh-tantalizing terrain to the beautiful base of a waterfall.

Keep in mind, the topography changes more than once here. You will need to traverse big boulders, rough riverbeds, and other assorted obstacles. Essentially, this is no hike for children and your hiking boots will get wet. After your hike, go for a dip in the pools at the waterfalls’ base. Park staff strongly suggest wearing a lifejacket.

7. The Mossy Ridge Trail Hike

Percy Warner Park offers visitors a free scenic hike at the Mossy Ridge Trail. It is rated as moderately challenging due largely to the multiple changes in terrain. It is less than five miles and provides hikers with memorable views of hills and hardwood forests in Nashville.

This pretty park offers travelers other activities too like horseback riding and golfing. It’s a notably nice place to take a break from the hubbub of the city and, better yet to dog owners, dogs are allowed here so you can explore with your four-legged friends.

8. The Volunteer Trail Day Loop Hike

If you need an athletic break from Nashville’s hustle and bustle, take this free day hike around the Percy Priest Lake shoreline at Long Hunter State Park. This free hike is under half an hour’s drive from Nashville and rated easy to moderate and is less than four miles. You will see quiet coves, rough bluffs, and hardwood trees too. Be sure that you stick to the well-marked trail. If you ignore the numerous signs you will end up lost or at the local overnight campsite and have to hike almost six miles back to your vehicle.

9. The Fiery Gizzard Trail Hike

This adventurous free day hike in South Cumberland State Park is just under 10 miles and is considered to be difficult. The park is roughly a 90-minute drive out of the city. To complete this trek you need to hike the Fiery Gizzard Trail to Raven Loop.

Interestingly, Backpacker magazine deemed this hike to be “one of the best 25 hikes” in the country. The trail runs along a little creek and the scenery is beautiful. Again though, it is generally only for experienced hikers.  

Portions of this trail are said by some to be “a natural obstacle course” and crawling over big boulders is par for the course. Be patient. Stick with it. In the end, it is worth the trouble.

10. The Foster Falls Climber’s Loop Hike

If you’re looking for a free hike near Nashville, that is not quite as difficult as the previously mentioned Fiery Gizzard Trail, South Cumberland State Park is also the home of the near-famous Foster Falls Climber’s Loop. It is a shorter, less difficult, two-mile hiking trail that is only rated as moderately difficult but arguably equally beautiful. The trailhead is located at the viewing platform that overlooks the famous falls.

From there you hike down to the falls’ base. There you will discover a pretty plunge pool that also serves as a super swimming hole on hot, sunny days. Even though this hike is officially rated as “moderately difficult”, you can manage it with small kids if you’re capable of helping them over some of the more challenging spots.

11. The Fall Creek Falls Trail Hike

Last but not necessarily least, this final free hike is offered in the Fall Creek Falls State Park a good two hours drive out of Nashville. It is rated a moderate hike that takes you to the highest free-fall waterfall east of the mighty Mississippi River.

This hike, and other offered activities and attractions, help to make this park one of the state’s “most visited.” Perhaps the top attraction here is the park’s incredible namesake falls. The total length of these trails is reported to be over 12 miles and you could hike them all within a day if you are up for it. However, if you would rather focus on the best trail there, hike the Cooks River Cycleway. If you want to do more hiking there, camp outdoors there or rent a cabin and try your hand (or foot?) at hiking the remainder of the 50+ miles of hiking trails there.

1. The Bamboo Forest, Maui

The Bamboo Forest is located along the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakala National Park on the Road to Hana on the island of Maui. The trail is roughly four miles in length but will take you to both the Waimoku Falls and Makahiku Falls. The forest is densely packed with trees that provide visitors with both shade and atmosphere. 

Here insects whirl and clack and birds twitter. For safety reasons, avoid swimming at the top or bottom of the falls. Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic scene seen only by those willing to make the hike.

2. Kawela Bay, Oahu

Kawela Bay is a secluded beach nestled near Oahu’s northern tip. The area is protected by the North Shore Community Land Trust in accordance with the wishes of local residents. As this goes to press, it remains relatively undeveloped despite previously proposed development plans.

It is highlighted by unique banyan trees and has even appeared in such feature films as The Hunger Games: Catching Fires and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It’s a great place to reconnect with nature and avoid crowds. Here you can picnic, paddleboard, and swim if you don’t mind access to few facilities.

3. The Kalalau Trail, Kauai

The well-known Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile-long trail that leads along the striking Na Pali Coast on the island of Kauai. It is a challenging, remote, rugged yet exceptionally beautiful trail. In fact, hiking parts of this trail requires a permit, and going with a guide is recommended. You will discover a number of superb waterfalls and sublime beaches such as the somewhat secluded and cozy Kalalau Beach, a.k.a. the Secret Beach. You are only allowed to camp along this trail in two places. There are composting toilets, but no seating areas, or potable water.

4. The Sanju Pagoda, Oahu

You will find this three-level structure on the isle of Oahu in Honolulu Memorial Park. It is a large replica of the revered Minami Hoke-ji Temple located in Nara, Japan.  The building stands 119 feet high and features fine Japanese designs.

The structure is built out of concrete, not wood. It is also in the official National Register of Historic Places. It dates back to 1966 and is actually one of the tallest temples in the country, perhaps even the world. Currently unsafe to enter, but you can still appreciate it from the outside.

5. Raëlian UFO Peace Park, Big Island

The distinctive Raëlian UFO Peace Park is a unique sculpture park located in Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Here you’ll see several different sculptures and a model of an unusual galactic embassy the Raelian UFO religious group wants to build there. The Raelian religion, founded by Claude “Ral” Vorilhon, believes life here was created by aliens known as the Elohim. The main sculpture is a large nude woman with the official Raelian symbol on her chest. There are also sculptures of chameleons, native birds, peacocks, and a sea turtle too.

6. Keahiakawelo, Lanai

Also called the Garden of the Gods, Keahiakawelo, also known as the Garden of the Gods, is a group of noteworthy natural rock formations on Lanai. Here the reddish, arid earth is dotted with various shapes and sizes of boulders. It’s speculated that previous visitors created these tiny towers and designs.

Local legend warns that visitors who tamper with these stones risk the wrath of ancient gods. Others note that two men from Lanai and Molokai were competing to see who could keep a fire burning the longest. Their efforts to win created this place.

7. Harold L. Lyon Arboretum, Oahu

This hidden gem in Honolulu is actually named after the ex-director of the Hawaii Sugar Planters’ Association who also studied plant diseases. Tourists typically come to this area to see the Manoa Falls and often ignore this fertile, lush garden. Thus, this is a great place to get off the beaten path especially if you are at all interested in plants and nature. The arboretum includes 12 gardens and seven miles of trails to explore and a variety of tropical flora and rare and endangered species of Hawaiian plants. Don’t miss Aihualama Falls!  

8. Glass Beach, Kauai

Glass Beach is in Eleele on the island of Kauai. It’s both unusual and unique and worth the detour off the typical tourist trail. It’s admittedly not the place for fun with beach blanket Barbie, but there’s something visually attractive about the rounded, smooth pieces of multi-colored glass that are strewn across the basalt rocks here. These pretty pebble-like pieces of glass accumulated on this beach are the result of the ebb and flow of ocean waves smoothing and removing the sharp edges of broken bottles and other glass discarded in the area.

9. The Kaumana Lava Tubes, Big Island

Close to Hilo, the intriguing Kaumana Lava Tubes are a comparatively unknown hidden gem on the popular Big Island. These tubes are the result of hot volcanic lava forcefully flowing through the earth. Travel writers report that the tubes here are actually more natural and authentic than other more commercialized tubes elsewhere. The tubes can be explored, but there are no official guides here, so you are solely responsible for your own safety. If you want to deeply explore these caverns, you’ll need a flashlight. Watch the slippery, jagged rocks!

10. The Coco Palms Resort, Kauai

If you appreciate history and tradition, visit the famous Coco Palms Resort in Wailua. This resort was the first resort on the entire island. It opened back in the 1950s and played host to such famous folks as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. This once pricey and opulent place was the preferred playground for the day’s rich and famous. In 1992 it was trashed by Hurricane Iniki and more recently damaged by a fire. Now ruined, the building’s shell has yet to be razed because the demolition plans remain in legal limbo due to disputes over land ownership.

Niihau spans an area of less than 70 square miles and is a privately-owned island purchased from the then-Kingdom of Hawaii in 1864. Estimates of the population vary from 30 or 40 to 300. Travel back through the mists of time to this peculiar prehistoric landscape of odd stone sand dunes. Yes, here hidden by the cliffs close to Koloa, you will actually see stone sand dunes. Indeed, originally made of sand, these dunes went through the process of lithification.  

In other words, over time the sand dunes were compacted by pressure, lost their porosity, and turned to stone. Today, they present an olden, otherworldly, striking sand-colored contrast to the blue of the sea. Hike here or rent a 4WD vehicle as the road here is in pretty bad shape!

The Waimanu Valley is a hidden gem and Hamakua Coast’s largest valley. Tourists avoid it because the journey there includes a nine-mile hike. The Muliwai Trail takes you by splashing cascades and picturesque streams.

The path can become quite slick so be sure to pack trekking poles with your other hiking equipment. You should also reserve a camping spot in advance. The black sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing and the crystal-clear water is good for swimming. The views are stunning with a lush valley on one side and water on the other.

16. The Makauwahi Cave, Kauai

The Makauwahi Cave is an under-visited hidden gem. It is also one of the island’s largest caves. The cave covers the subjects of archeology, history, and, of course, nature.  

Here you’ll discover fascinating fossils that’ll give you a glimpse into the island’s past. Like some ancient diary, the cave’s layers tell a tale of Kauai’s history. Explore this sinkhole, formed from the inward collapse of a fantastic fossilized sand dune.  

Study plant and animal fossils that were here before man. Visit Mahaulepu Beach too. It was a shooting location for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

17. Ching’s Pond, Maui

Also popularly known as the Blue Sapphire Pools, Ching’s Pond is hidden from the road. This is a popular, local hangout and while it is quiet on weekdays, it is often crowded on the weekends. The bubbly Palauhulu Stream gently flows through here beneath a bridge.

Below that bridge, you will spot some striking sapphire pools. It’s so pretty you’d almost think fairies and nymphs live here. There are but two hiking trails to reach this spot. The less challenging trail is marked by a big tree just 50 feet from the bridge.

18. The Kau Desert, Big Island

Hawaii’s Big Island is home to the expansive Kau Desert. This lunar-like landscape includes a natural floor of gravel, sand, and volcanic ash dotted with boulders and solidified lava. The desolate landscape is almost completely devoid of wildlife and green plants.  

The rain that does fall on this torrid terrain is generally too acidic to be beneficial. The water droplets in the air mix with the sulfur dioxide from the various volcanic vents here to create toxic rain. Hikers who plan on braving this place should remember that if the volcanoes are too active, the trails may be closed.

The critically-acclaimed Vintage Cave Club is said to be one of the most luxurious (albeit costly) restaurants in the state. While it’s not exactly a “hidden” gem, it makes the cost to dine here at this exclusive, and stylish restaurant keeps many tourists away. Still, if you win the lottery and want to spoil yourself, this is one place to do it.  

It offers distinctive dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant includes a well-stocked bar and wine cellar, and walls adorned with artwork by Picasso, Anton Molnar, and others.

20. Lanai Cat Sanctuary, Lanai

“What’s new pussycat?” If you like cuddly cats, the Lanai Cat Sanctuary is the purr-fect place for you. Here you will find 500 former furry feline strays that have finally found a home at this 25,000-foot furball refuge.

Opened in 2009, this serval sanctuary was founded to rescue and protect unwanted cats and provide them with a safe place to live. By protecting pussies, the sanctuary also aids in the survival of another animal, the ua’u bird. You can come here, play with the local lynxes, lend a paw, and even make a donation.    

21. The Pineapple Garden Maze, Oahu

Visit the famous Dole Pineapple Plantation and lose yourself in the popular Pineapple Garden Maze. Those in the know report that this is the largest plant maze on the planet. This pineapple puzzle features 14,000 plants, spans an area of two acres, and includes two and a half miles’ worth of paths. Naturally, some paths lead nowhere, and others are intentionally designed to mislead and confuse people trying to make it through the maze. There’s more than one way out, though, so don’t stress about being lost in the labyrinth forever.  

22. The Hindu Himalayan Academy, Kauai

A visit to the Hindu Himalayan Academy might make you feel like you’re in some foreign land like Tibet or Nepal. Ah, but rather than the majestic Himalayan Mountains, the academy is in the heart of a tropical landscape. This memorable monastery was founded by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami. It is a peaceful place where Western ways and Polynesian costumes merge with assorted Eastern religions. This sanctuary serves as both a “global outreach” and a Hindu education center that follows the teachings of numerous gurus from southern India and Sri Lanka.

23. Shangri La, Oahu

In this case, the literary-inspired name Shangri La concerns a “hidden” collection of interesting Islamic art that focuses on Hinduism and Islam. Philanthropist Doris Duke is the founder of this collection found outside of Honolulu. Shangri La was once Duke’s official Hawaiian hideaway.

She designed it inspired by her international travels. Here you can see embroideries, paintings, and sculptures that she collected from various places over a number of years. The building overlooks the ocean. It includes an Iranian-style pavilion and a big saltwater pool too.

24. The Blue Room, Kauai

The Blue Room in Hawaii is another amazing natural wonder here in Hawaii. You’ll find this hidden gem in the beautiful Waikapalae wet cave situated in Kauai. The Blue Room is “hidden” in the back of a cavern entrance and is thus named because it shines with a shade of deep blue when the level of the water is high enough.

Historic Liljestrand House was constructed over half a century ago. In fact, many bridges in the United States are well-known for several reasons, be it their history, total spans, overall appearance, or even the views they offer visitors. 1. The Bixby Creek Bridge, California

The beautiful Bixby Bridge is reportedly an exceptional example of architecture. It stands 218 feet high and extends a total of 714 feet over Bixby Creek. It connects Big Sur to San Francisco.

One of the country’s most photographed bridges, it was built from 600,000 pounds of steel and 6,600 cubic yards of cement. Its overall design adheres to the classic California entertainment industry architectural style. Veteran visitors say that this bridge somehow contributes to the particular “majestic nature” of traveling from one place to the other.  

2. The Brooklyn Bridge, New York

This bridge, made famous in cartoons, movies, and television, was specifically constructed across the East River to join Lower Manhattan to Brooklyn Heights. It was designed by German-American engineer John A. Roebling and took 14 years to complete. It was officially opened in 1883.  

The bridge has been a National Historic Landmark since 1964. It is at least 272 feet high, has a length of 1.1 miles, and is 6,016 feet long. Its main span is 1,595.5 feet. One of the oldest suspension bridges, it is also a pedestrian bridge and a six-lane traffic bridge.

3. The London Bridge, Arizona

This bridge is thus named because it once spanned the River Thames. Sometime in the 1960s, Ivan Luckin, one of the city councilors, sold the bridge to the US. It was delivered to the state of Arizona in 1967.  

It was reinforced to make sure it was safe. The work was completed in 1971. The bridge stretches 930 feet across Bridgewater Channel, joining popular Lake Havasu City to a small island that is home to homes, hotels, resorts, restaurants, and shops. It still has many of the original ornate lamp posts from London and all of its 10,276 exterior granite blocks.  

4. The Golden Gate Bridge, California

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is now as iconic as the city itself. It was designed by American structural engineer Joseph B. Strauss. Construction on the bridge began in 1930 and was completed seven years later and, at a height of 746 feet, was then the world’s tallest suspension bridge.

It is 4,200 feet long and crosses the Golden Gate Strait to connect San Francisco with Marin County. It required several thousand workers to complete it at a cost of $35 million. The bridge is world-famous for its stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and its Art Deco features.  

5. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Florida

This bridge has its roots in a tragic accident between a freighter named the Summit Venture and the previous bridge on May 9, 1980. By 1987, the construction of its replacement, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge was completed. This cable-stayed bridge crosses Tampa Bay spanning 21,860 feet to connect Terra Ceia with St. Petersburg.

It has a maximum height of 430 feet. It features a bicycle and even a pedestrian lane. Some say it looks a bit like it has its own sails flowing in the wind because of its huge concrete goalposts and yellow cables.

6. The New River Gorge Bridge, West Virginia

Next on our list of famous bridges, this structure is aptly named. It took just three years to build and was opened in 1977. It spans a distance of 3,030 feet and is the world’s “fifth-longest single-span bridge” and crosses the New River Gorge.  

Thanks to this bridge, a commute of at least 40 minutes is now only one minute. It reaches a height of 876 feet and features a graceful arch. The views from the bridge are spectacular.

7. The Cornish Windsor Covered Bridge, New Hampshire

The famous Cornish Windsor Covered Bridge spans an area of 460 feet. Completed in 1866, it is an exceptional example of a classic American wooden bridge from the 1800s. American architect and civil engineer used his own unique lattice truss design which he patented in both 1820 and 1835. As this goes to press, it remains one of the nation’s longest two-spanned covered bridges. This famous covered bridge crosses the rushing Connecticut River and joins the towns of Cornish and Windsor.  

8. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Maryland

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is another famous bridge. At the time of its official opening in 1952, it was the world’s “longest steel structure running over continuous water.” It runs for 22,704 feet and reaches a maximum height of 186 feet. 

This famous bridge joins the state’s eastern and western shores. It is a two-lane bridge that is open to pedestrians on May 1st every year. People who suffer from a fear of bridges, gephyrophobia, say that this bridge is one of the world’s scariest because of the low visibility that occurs during storms. It can be so bad, you can’t see the ground while crossing the bridge.

9. The Skydance Bridge, Oklahoma

This famous bridge, the Skydance Bridge, is unlike the other bridges. It was not designed for vehicular traffic. It was designed for pedestrians.

This bridge is 60 feet wide and stretches over Interstate 40 to provide pedestrians with a safe way to cross the freeway. It is 380 feet in length and stands 192 feet high. The innovative design is the work of architects Hans and Torrey Butzer who said they were actually inspired by Oklahoma’s state bird, the scissor-tailed flycatcher. The design includes an imaginative “bridge and sculpture” combination. It features stainless steel panels that are positioned to create the impression of feathers.

10. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Washington

The original bridge opened sometime in 1940. Four months later, it was decimated by strong winds. A decade later, the bridge was replaced. It included stiffened struts and open trusses to more effectively handle strong winds.  

Traffic on the bridge went one way–west. It would not be until 2007 that another bridge was erected to handle traffic heading east. The bridge crosses the Narrows of Puget Sound. It joins the Olympic Peninsula to the state’s mainland. The bridge is 5,400 feet in length.  

11. The Mackinac Bridge, Michigan

The famous Mackinac Bridge was opened in 1957. It was an architectural marvel that handled four lanes of traffic. The entire bridge is 26,372 feet in length with its main span being 3,799 feet long.

It’s the western hemisphere’s longest suspension bridge. The bridge spans two Great Lakes, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron, joining St. Ignace with Mackinaw City. Most of it is composed of steel grating in order to provide optimal airflow and reduce the chances of the bridge being damaged by high winds.

12. The Rainbow Bridge, New York

No need to protest this bridge! This famous arch bridge officially opened to vehicular traffic back in 1941. It crosses the world-famous Niagara Gorge and connects the Niagara Falls in Canada with the Niagara Falls in the US. (Yes, we know that technically the famous Rainbow Bridge is on the border of both countries, but it still counts.)  

It is 1,450 feet long. Its longest span is 960 feet. At its highest point, it measures 202 feet. It doesn’t matter if you’re there taking pictures of the well-known falls from the bridge or photographing the bridge itself with the falls as a backdrop, the views here are truly unforgettable.

13. The Royal Gorge Bridge, Colorado

From start to finish, it took only half a year to complete the Royal Gorge Bridge. Opened in 1929, this famous steel suspension bridge near Cañon City was designed to be a part of the tourist attraction aptly named the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park amusement park. While visitors can enter from the north gate, they will discover the south end is actually blocked just past the bridge.

This noteworthy bridge garnered the official title of the world’s tallest bridge at a height of 955 feet. Unfortunately, in 2001 the Chinese erected a bridge that bumped it out of the top slot. It remains the highest bridge in the United States. It is 1,260 feet in length and its longest span measures in at 880 feet.

14. The Benson Bridge, Oregon

Last but not necessarily least on our list of most famous bridges in the US, is Benson Bridge. It was opened in 1914. It crosses Multnomah Creek between the two cascades of Multnomah Falls.

This footbridge-specific design includes a buttressed concrete floor arch. It is almost six feet wide and stretches out for 52 feet. Specifically, it allows the popular Multnomah Creek Trail to pass over the actual creek. It reaches a maximum height of 135 feet. The arch itself towers 105 feet over the falls’ lower section.

But if you would like to explore some of them, you need to set aside some time to see the slot canyons in the US state of Arizona. Antelope Canyon: The Upper, The Lower, and The X

Arguably the most popular slot canyon, Antelope Canyon is also the most famous in the US and maybe even on Earth. Antelope Canyon can be found near the city of Page. It’s situated within the Navajo Nation.

Regular readers may already know that the only way to visit this slot canyon is by booking an official tour. Due to the canyon’s growing popularity, and an increase in tourism, you really must make reservations well in advance. Here at Antelope Canyon, you can explore two different slot canyons, the most visited and well-known Upper Antelope Canyon and the less frequented and more challenging Lower Antelope Canyon.

There is also a comparatively unknown third area known as Antelope Canyon X. This area includes two distinct slot canyons, the North and the South. While it is located a few miles away from the more popular areas, it still is considered a part of Antelope Canyon.  

If you enjoy beautiful slot canyons but would like to avoid crowds, this is an exceptional alternative. In fact, there are additional slot canyons in this area. You can book tours to explore three other slot canyons all within proximity of each other.

Other Alternatives

Owl Canyon  

Owl Canyon is named after its iconic resident great horned owls. Veteran visitors say it’s “fun to see” but it’s not especially narrow or photogenic. The most memorable area is at the end. Tour guides are required here too but it is more likely you will be able to spend more time here than elsewhere.

Rattlesnake Canyon  

Some say Rattlesnake Canyon is the most interesting canyon to tour. It is officially a portion of the Upper Antelope Canyon’s wash system. Aptly named for its serpentine aspect, it includes winding passages and a few very narrow places.

Mountain Sheep Canyon 

Interestingly, the canyon wall formations in rugged Mountain Sheep Canyon are said to be significantly “groovier.” Exploring Rugged Mountain Sheep Canyon involves a more strenuous hike than the other slot canyons mentioned here. It is a 1.5-mile out-and-back hike.”

This tour includes a lot of ladders to scale. They are all well-secured to the rock, of course, but a few of the climbs could be steep enough to make travelers a tad nervous, especially those who travel with younger children.

Waterholes Canyon

Also known as Water Holes Canyon, a number of visitors claim this slot canyon is the very best alternative to Antelope Canyon. It is beautiful and quite similar. Perhaps more importantly, fewer tourists know of this place so you have a better chance of fully enjoying your tour. As this goes to press, visitors must book their tour “on-site.” That could, of course, change by the time you sit down to make your plans as these canyons continue to grow in popularity.

Arizona Hot Springs

Last but certainly not least, is the Arizona Hot Springs. You will find this slot canyon in the popular Lake Mead Recreational Area, south of the well-known Hoover Dam. Your journey begins on Highway 93 at the hiking trail’s parking lot which is less than three and a half miles south of the distinctive dam.

The hike itself out and back is a total of five miles. You will hike roughly 0.38 miles from the parking lot trailhead before coming to an obvious fork in the road. Two separate trails begin here.

The Hot Spring Trail And The White Rock Canyon Trail

Both the Hot Spring Trail and the White Rock Canyon Trail start here. They almost form a loop trail on the Colorado River’s banks. The former is shorter in length and includes an elevation gain of almost 720 feet.

The elevation change can be tiring. So be sure you are up for this hike. Most of the hike will take you along a large slot canyon. Of course, what really makes this slot canyon hike unique is the curious yet spectacular “Hot Springs.”  

In this case, these hot springs are little man-made pools of hot water constructed between the slot canyon’s towering walls to ensure that too much water does not flow along the trail. The water gets hotter the closer you are to these springs. It has been known to get as hot as 104 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Once you pass the artificial pools, you will see a ladder that can be used to continue on the trail to the Colorado River’s banks. You may even spot people canoeing in this area. Most importantly though, don’t let the shortness of this hike fool you.  

Be Prepared

Keep in mind that if you plan on hiking this trail, you still need to be prepared and ready for the heat. During the summer months, the heat here can be notably dangerous here. In fact, the heat is so dangerous that from May 15th through September 29th, a lot of the trail is considered to be “closed.”  

Most of the trail is not shaded, thus you will be in the sun most of the time. Last but not least, you also need to be careful when you swim in the pools. At press time, scientists had discovered an amoeba known as Naegleria Fowleri in the water.

In the most serious cases, it can not only cause infection but also death. You may see warning signs posted along the trail. Be careful not to let any of the pool water get in your mouth or nose. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

Discover the beauty of Olympic National Park in the US state of Washington, It is a unique national park due in part to its variety of ecosystems and landscapes. Here you can explore the rocky, rugged coastline, walk through lush, verdant, temperate rainforests, and hike to majestic mountain peaks as well. Just like a previous piece, the hikes here are presented by individual geographical location and unless otherwise noted, all hiking trail distances are round-trip.  

Olympic National Park features four main areas. They are the park’s northern region which includes popular Hurricane Ridge, the rainforest, the Pacific Coastline, and the well-known Staircase. Without further ado, here are the 17 best hikes in Olympic National Park.  

The 17 Best Hikes in Northern Olympic National Park

1. Hurricane Ridge Trail to Hurricane Hill

You will need two hours to complete this 3.2-mile hike. It is rated easy to moderate and has a total ascent of 700 feet. This hike is even good if you’re traveling with older kids.

Park your car in the parking lot located at Hurricane Ridge Road’s end. Don’t park close to the official Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center unless you want to add almost two and a half miles to the hike. The trailhead should be marked. 

This is a wide trail that eventually runs along a ridge and slowly gains elevation. There are some switchbacks near the end of the hike as you climb to the peak but it’s not strenuous. The view is spectacular.

2. Hike to Sunrise Ridge via the Sunrise Point Trail

This is another easy-to-moderate hike that offers hikers more incredible views out over Hurricane Ridge. It has a total distance of three miles and a total ascent of 800 feet. Give yourself two hours for this hike.

Park at Hurricane Ridge’s main parking lot. This memorable hike begins on the popular High Ridge Trail. The trail will lead you up to a noteworthy viewpoint and then continues east toward massive Mount Angeles. Now you need to watch yourself as this is where the name of this hiking trail actually changes.  

For no official reason, it is given two different monikers: the Klahhane Ridge Trail and the Sunrise Point Trail. Nevertheless, the beautiful panoramic views on this hike are worth a little confusion. The hike ends at an overlook where you can enjoy a striking view of Mount Angeles.

3. Hike Klahhane Ridge Trail to Mount Angeles

Interested in actually hiking to Mount Angeles? If so, prepare for a strenuous hike with a total ascent of 2,551 feet. It’s 6.5 miles and you’ll need between four to six hours to complete it.

This specific hike is actually an extension of the previously mentioned Sunrise Ridge Trail hike. If you want to hike to the highest peak in the area and enjoy one of the park’s best panoramic views, this is the hike for you, fellow hikers. You begin this hike at the official Hurricane Ridge parking lot.

Hike east along the earlier mentioned Klahhane Ridge Trail–also named the Sunrise Point Trail–to Sunrise Ridge and beyond. You will next experience a moderate descent. Now here’s the interesting part.

In order to actually reach the very top of Mount Angeles, you must now complete a very steep hike. It comes complete with some fairly tricky rock scrambling as well. Ah, but from high atop of Mount Angeles, the views are said to be just plain unbeatable. Complete the hike on a clear day and you will be able to see Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, Vancouver Island, and Olympic National Park’s mountains.

4. The Marymere Falls Hike

This is an easy hike with a total ascent of just 200 feet. It has a distance of under two miles and should only require one hour to finish. Veteran visitors say it is a sweet, short hike to see this beautiful waterfall that’s nestled deep inside a verdant old-growth forest. Most of this hike to Marymere Falls is surprisingly fast, flat, and, in terms of scenery, quite memorable.  

It features bridges spanning streams and creeks and an ancient forest of moss-covered trees looming overhead. There is, however, a brief, technically strenuous uphill climb to a great viewpoint of the waterfall. This hike can also be a nice little addition to the hike to Mount Storm King since both hikes start at the same trailhead. They both begin at the popular Lake Crescent which is nestled right next to the official Storm King Ranger Station.

5. The Mount Storm King Hike

Get pumped up, people! This hike is one of the best hikes in the entire park. This hike may be under five miles but it is rated strenuous. It has a total ascent of 2,130 feet and you will need between three to five hours to complete it. 

Despite the fact that those in the know call it a comparatively short yet “grueling” hike, it ends with a stunningly memorable view of lovely Lake Crescent and is one of the most popular hikes in the park as well.  

Not only is this a steep, challenging, and nigh-relentless climb up to majestic Mount Storm King, but just before you get to the actual summit, the trail gets steeper still. You will actually need to use a number of ropes. After that, you must survive one brief, last scramble to Mount Storm King’s peak. The hike to Marymere Falls can be added to the start or finish of this hike.

6. The Sol Duc Falls Hike

If you’d prefer an easy hike, try this 2.25-mile hike. It has a total ascent of just 320 feet and might take an hour to finish. For those not in the know, Sol Duc Falls is a striking waterfall that is found deep amidst Olympic National Park’s temperate rainforest.  

Hop in your car and take the well-marked Sol Duc Road to its end. Park in the parking lot there. From there it’s just a comparatively quick round-trip walk to the wonderful waterfall.

7. Hike High Divide Trail and the Seven Lakes Basin Loop

Up for a challenge? This strenuous hike has a total distance of 19 miles and a total ascent of 5,000 feet, this hike requires between 10 to 14 hours to complete. In fact, you may wish to make an overnight backpacking trip out of this one.

You begin this adventure at striking Sol Duc Falls. From there, you hike past distinctive Deer Lake and head into the subalpine region. You will see a total of seven lovely lakes on this hike and might even see black bears and other assorted local wildlife as well. If you do decide to camp overnight on this trek you will have to get a permit ahead of time and be sure you know all the precautions to take when you camp anywhere that bears may bed down too.

8. The Cape Flattery Hike

Let’s try another easy one now, shall we? For those not in the know, Cape Flattery is officially the northernmost place in the entire continental United States. More specifically it is situated at the spot where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets the Pacific Ocean.  

This is an easy hike with a total ascent of only 200 feet. It has a distance of only 1.5 miles. You should be able to do it in an hour. The hiking trail itself actually alternates between boardwalks, a dirt trail, and a gravel trail all the way up to three exceptional viewpoints of the famous Cape Flattery.

9. The Shi Shi Beach Hike

If you’d like to spend some time at one of the park’s most beautiful beaches, where you can see not only tide pools but distinguishing pinnacles, this hike is perfect for your hiking bucket list. You can do it as a lengthy day hike or turn it into an overnight backpacking adventure. 

Depending on how far you wish to hike down the beach, the distance will vary between six and 10 miles. Still, this hike is rated easy, with only a minimal ascent.  

It should only require a total of four to six hours in total to finish it. It is also important to know that while the beach is situated within Olympic National Park actual access to the beach is via the Makah Reservation. You will need to pay the park’s fee and get a Makah Recreation Pass as well.

10. Hike Rialto Beach to Hole-in-the-Wall

The hike to Hole-in-the-Wall is another of the best hikes in this park. It is rated as an easy hike with a total distance of 3.5 miles. The ascent is minimal and it will take between 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

You will actually be hiking on the beach and the views are said to be “amazing.” Just drive to Rialto Beach and park in the parking area there, right alongside the beach. Hit the beach and head north. Enjoy the view of the well-known sea stacks that sit on the rugged coastline there.

11. The Third Beach Hike

To understand the name of this hike, you have to know something about the area. There is a trio of beaches near the town of La Push. They are actually named the First, Second, and Third Beach. (First Beach is the northernmost of these beaches and Third Beach is the most remote.)

The Third Beach Hike is an easy, three-mile hike with an ascent of 400 feet. Allow up to two hours for this one. The trail takes you through a verdant forest. It is generally an easy, flat trail but take a talkative hiking buddy as some say hiking through all these trees can be a little monotonous. Ah, but once you hit the beach, the view is quite nice!

12. The Ruby Beach Hike

Ruby Beach is a popular and easily accessible beach in Olympic National Park. It is named after the striking ruby-colored crystals that are in the sand there. This hike to the beach is six miles in length.  

It is an easy hike with a minimal ascent. Give yourself three hours for this one. For a quick visit, park your vehicle in the big parking area then head downhill to the beach. In order to make it an actual hike, you simply go north along sand ‘til you hit Hoh River. That makes it a six-mile hike round trip.

There are two hiking trails you can take through the Hoh Rainforest. They both begin at one parking lot. Perhaps more importantly, they are both considered easy and are both reported to be “essential” when it comes to fully experiencing Olympic National Park.

13. The Hall of Mosses Hike

This hike is just under one mile. It’s an easy hike with minimal ascent and might take you half an hour at the most. The popular Hall of Mosses hiking trail loops through some of the area’s oldest trees. As you might gather from its name, this is also one of the park’s best places to take pictures of the moss hanging off of the trees there.

14. Hike The Spruce Nature Trail

This is one of the easiest and best hikes in the park. It’s a 1.2-mile loop trail with minimal ascent. It should take you no more than 45 minutes to finish.

It is highlighted by memorable views of the Hoh River and the local rainforest. If you are bothered by crowds, you will be pleased to know that this hiking trail is normally significantly less crowded than the previously mentioned Hall of Mosses. Animal lovers will also be happy to know you might be able to spot a black bear on this trail too.

15. The Staircase Rapids Loop

This is an easy hike of just under three miles. It includes a total accent of 285 feet. You will need between one and a half to two hours to finish it.

This hiking trail runs along the Skokomish River’s North Fork. It takes you through a temperate, lush rainforest and comes complete with exceptional views of both rapids and waterfalls. Veteran visitors say this is a beautiful place to be. Typically speaking, as this goes to press anyway, you typically do not see a lot of other hikers here on this trail either. It offers views much like those found in the Hoh Rainforest, huge moss-covered trees complete with lichen.

16. The Mount Ellinor Hike

Also on our list of best hikes in this park, is this challenging hike. It has a distance of between 3.2 to 6.2 miles. Depending on your specific choices, the total ascent is a minimum of 2,400 feet but could go as high as 3,300 feet. Thus, you need to set aside at least three hours if not five.

Your reward here is the pretty panoramic views out over the well-known Olympic Peninsula and beyond to Mount Baker and Mount Rainier. Mount Ellinor is one of Olympic National Park’s highest mountains. It’s located on the park’s eastern side.  

You actually have a choice of two hiking strategies in order to reach Mount Ellinor’s peak. One is a hike that has more of a gradual ascent but is longer. The other is shorter in length but is significantly steep. Of course, as it is with many hikes, you want to avoid heading out when it is especially cloudy or even drizzly. You want to be able to see you can in Olympic Park everything when you get to the top so clarity is king here.

17. Hike East Fork Quinault River Trail to Enchanted Valley

Last but certainly not least on this list of best hikes in the park, is this two to four-day adventure. It encompasses a distance of 26 miles and is rated as strenuous. Your journey begins near lovely Lake Quinault.

This is an exciting overnight backpacking trip where you hike to the Enchanted Valley Chalet. You take the popular East Fork Quinault River Trail for 13 miles. You hike through lush, old-growth forest ‘til you arrive at the chalet.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife too. You may very well spot bears, coyotes, deer, elk, and even mountain lions as you hike this trail. Your best bet is to consider this a fun overnight backpacking trip.

Get an Olympic permit ahead of time. With your permit, you will be able to camp overnight at Enchanted Valley, O’Neil Creek, Pony Bridge, or Pyrites Creek. Be aware that as this goes to press, the national park service may have decided to tear down and remove the old chalet.

Hikes Along The Going-to-the-Sun Road

1. The Avalanche Lake Hike

This is a 4.6-mile round-trip hike. It is rated as easy to moderate and has a total ascent of 500 feet. Give yourself up to three hours to complete it.  

The specific trailhead for this hike is near Lake McDonald at the 0.7-mile loop Trail of the Cedars. The Avalanche Lake is a lot different than the majority of the other hikes on this list. While a lot of the hikes in this park include panoramic views of massive mountain peaks and alpine trails, this hike actually runs through a thick forest next to Avalanche Creek.

In essence, it’s a comparatively quiet trail through the verdant woods that ends at a lovely lake. Stick to the boardwalk trail through the dense cedar forest and be sure to take a look at Avalanche Gorge as well. At the top of the loop trail, you will be able to follow signs to the lake. While the walk to the lake is generally uphill, it’s not strenuous and the lake is quite photogenic and perfect for a picnic.

2. The Hidden Lake Overlook Hike

This popular hike is rated easy and has a total distance of under three miles. It has an ascent of 460 feet and should take no more than an hour and a half to finish. This hike starts right at Logan Pass itself.

The trail is a mix of gravel trails and boardwalk and leads to the above-mentioned Hidden Lake. Keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats as you go. It is one of the best places in the entire park to spot them. If you’d rather not stop at the overlook and continue on the lake itself, it only adds another 2.4 miles to your total hiking distance.

3. Hike The Highline Trail

This hike is rated as moderately difficult. It has a total distance of under 12 miles with a total ascent of 3,000 feet. Despite its length and rating, it’s one of the best hikes here.  Allow yourself between five and seven hours for this one.

This hike also begins at Logan Pass and is mainly a downhill hike. Here you will be hiking high above the well-known Going-to-the-Sun Road. The views are stunning and you will see multiple glaciers, pretty wildflowers, and maybe even some wildlife.

This is a point-to-point hike. It goes from popular Logan Pass to the Loop. It’s a popular hike because you can enjoy high alpine views without actually having to hike all the way up any massive mountains.

4. Hike To The Virginia And St. Mary Falls

Veteran visitors suggest hiking to both falls on the same day. The round trip distance to Virginia Falls is 3.8 miles. The hike to St. Mary Falls is 2.4 miles. There is an elevation gain of 285 feet hiking to Virginia Falls and a loss of 260 feet to St. Mary Falls.

The hikes are easy. You should reach St. Mary Falls in an hour and Virginia Falls in two hours. Set aside three hours and do them both on one hike.

Start the hike at the official St. Mary Falls Trailhead or at the St. Mary Falls Shuttle Stop. Here you will hike a trail located right next to a portion of St. Mary Lake and through a recovering forest that was burned back in 2015. Once you reach the two-tiered St. Mary Falls, take in the sight and hike onto Virginia Falls.

If you are driving yourself, start at the St. Mary Falls Trailhead and park in the little parking lot on Going-to-the-Sun Road. If you’re not driving or can’t find a parking space there, then the shuttle at the previously-mentioned St. Mary Falls Shuttle Stop. Taking the shuttle shaves almost half a mile off your total hiking distance.  

The Hikes In Many Glacier

Many Glacier is said by some to be “a hiker’s paradise” and one of the park’s most beautiful areas. It is highlighted by glaciers, lakes, snow-covered mountains, and waterfalls too.

5. The Apikuni Falls Hike

Next on our list of best hikes in this park is this two-mile, easy-to-moderate hike. It has a total ascent of 700 feet and should not take more than one hour to complete. The trailhead is at the Apikuni Parking Area. Those in the know say it is popular not only because of the falls but also because it is comparatively short and close to the well-known Many Glacier Hotel.

6. Hike To Cracker Lake

Cracker Lake is one of the park’s most beautiful lakes. This aquamarine lake is nestled amidst wildflower-carpeted mountains and grassy slopes. Ah, but the hike to this lake is strenuous. It is almost 13 miles round trip and has a total ascent of 1,400 feet.  

Give yourself between six and eight hours to complete it. This hike also begins in the parking lot of the Many Glacier Hotel. Those in the know note that the first few miles of this specific trail double as a horse trail so it can be rutted and muddy. Watch where you step!

7. The Grinnell Glacier Hike

Another great albeit strenuous hike in this park, is this nearly 11-mile adventure. It includes a total ascent of 1,600 feet so set aside between five to seven hours to finish this one. This hike features alpine scenery, emerald green lakes, waterfalls, a good chance to spot bears, moose, or mountain goats, and, unsurprisingly, a glacier. You can start the hike at Lake Josephine or the Grinnell Glacier Trailhead on Continental Divide Trail. Choosing the former option will shorten the hike because with this option you board a boat across both Swiftcurrent Lake and lovely Lake Josephine.

8. Hike To Iceberg Lake

This is another strenuous but worthy hike. It has a total distance of almost 10 miles and a total ascent of 1,200 feet so set aside between five and seven hours for this one. The trailhead here is at the comfy Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.

This hike to Iceberg Lake utilizes the same trail taken on the way to Ptarmigan Tunnel. Just like the previous hike on the list, it features alpine views, a beautiful alpine lake, and colorful wildflowers too. Unlike the hike to Grinnell Glacier, however, this trail takes you into official grizzly bear territory, so pack bear spray, make a lot of noise, and hike in groups.

9. The Ptarmigan Tunnel Hike

Before you head out on this hike, be sure you are up for a strenuous hike that has a total distance of over 10 miles. It has a total ascent of 2,300 feet and requires between five to seven hours to complete. Just like the previous hike on this list, the trailhead here is at the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.

Additionally, this hike also uses the trail leading to Iceberg Lake. Halfway to the lake though, you break off to the right onto the trail to the popular Ptarmigan Tunnel. It is here you will definitely notice the trail getting steeper and more strenuous.

Ah, but pause to enjoy the amazing alpine views. You will hike through Ptarmigan Tunnel near the end of this hike. The tunnel was actually blown out of the rugged rock here back in the 1930s.

You will see more memorable views of the park from the tunnel’s far end. Not into crowds? Then you’ll be happy to learn that this specific trail is not as popular as those to Iceberg or Cracker Lakes.

Hikes In Two Medicine

Travel writers report that the Two Medicine area is probably not quite as popular as Many Glacier or Going-to-the-Sun Road. Still, the hiking trails and scenery are arguably just as jaw-dropping. Plus, since it generally gets fewer hikers, it has more of that “off-the-beaten-path” feel.

The last “best hike” here is this strenuous, 14.8-mile loop trek that requires seven to nine hours to complete. Your journey begins at the North Shore Trailhead conveniently close to Two Medicine Campground. Head towards Pitamakan Pass, circle ‘round Rising Wolf Mountain, and cross the narrow ridge known as “the Saddle.” Pass Dawson Pass ‘til you reach Two Medicine Lake. You can grab a shuttle back to the campground.

There is something uniquely beautiful about Utah’s Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This remote area is one of those places that encourage travelers to occasionally travel off the well-worn path. This is one of those noteworthy travel destinations that does not always rate high on anyone’s bucket list but is certainly worth inclusion.

For those not in the know, President Bill Clinton declared this place an official national monument in 1996 via an actual Presidential Proclamation. It is called Grand Staircase-Escalante because it is home to a number of plateaus, including the 9000-foot tall Kaiparowits plateau, which descends from popular Bryce Canyon National Park south to the world-famous Grand Canyon. 2. Hike the Burr Trail into Capitol Reef

Veteran visitors suggest driving into Capitol Reef National Park’s back entrance. Veteran visitors report that the traffic is surprisingly sparse. You can very well be out cruising around a beautiful spot all alone.

Additionally, there is an enjoyable switchback that you drive down in order to reach Capitol Reef’s water-pocket fold area. It might be important to note that a section of this road is, as this goes to press, only gravel. Allow yourself a good two hours for this particular drive.

3. Drive Notom Road

Also referred to as “Norton” Road by some travelers and travel bloggers, this is another option. Reported to be a scenic backway, you wouldn’t want to drive it in a sports car. While the views can’t be disputed, you will be surrendering some comfort by taking this route. If you don’t mind that then you probably have a four-wheel drive vehicle with decent clearance and should be able to travel this road. Check on weather conditions and road conditions prior to taking it though as you will otherwise be dealing with small sand drifts along with the loose graveled sections.

4. Take Hell’s Backbone Scenic Byway

Hell’s Backbone Road is generally slotted into the top 10 things to do here. Mind you, it sometimes receives mixed reviews from those who have been on it. The highlight here is the Hell’s Backbone Bridge. 

There’s a little pullout area where you can park your vehicle, sit and rest and take in the scenery. You will also pass Calf Creek Falls where you can stop and play in the water. There are those who didn’t enjoy driving through the forest and don’t consider trees a part of the scenery and there are no services.  

Even they, however, admit once you actually arrive at the top by the previously-mentioned bridge it is undeniably beautiful. You can see to well-known Bryce and beyond. To be fair, it can be windy so if driving while it’s windy out is an issue for you, check the weather prior to taking this two-hour drive.

5. Hike Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch

In order to complete this hike you need to drive about 45 minutes on a reportedly rough road. Surprisingly, when you get to the actual trailhead there’s a nice, big parking lot. Permits are $6.00 per person at press time.

They can be purchased ahead of time, paid for online, or paid by scanning a barcode right there. You will need to complete a form that must be clearly displayed on your dashboard. The 5.6-mile out-and-back hike may take longer than you expect as the hiking trail typically has a lot of rocks on it.

As is often the case, the canyon itself is cooler and that makes it more comfortable for hiking. You can download the trail route on All Trails and even print it out if you are concerned about your signal. As often suggested, dress in layers and don’t hike there if rain is expected.

6. The Calf Creek Falls Hike

This six-mile hike is rated moderately strenuous and some hikers have called it unexpectedly amazing. On this hike, you will be able to see some huge petroglyphs on the mountain there. Ah, but the real highlight of this specific hike is the waterfall at the trail’s end.

Even if you know it’s there, it just isn’t what you expect to see in a desert. It’s a beautiful waterfall that is 126 feet tall. There’s an attractive little beach area there as well. You can swim here as well. So, plan to do this hike when it’s nice and warm.

7. The Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyon Hike

Your route to the trailhead might not be smooth so check with park officials for road conditions and recommendations. Some folks choose to do it the hard way and then complain about it. The trailhead parking lot might not look like much either but remember this is about the hike and not the drive to the starting point.

The canyon itself is unique and beautiful and hiking through it is the best way to experience that. It is an adventurous experience as you hike, shimmy, scramble, climb up and climb down on this terrific trek. You may find it odd, but in one way this hike is more kid-friendly than adult friendly as there are places where grown adults have to struggle a bit to fit through some of the tight spots here.

If you’re feeling energetic and have the time, keep going and hike to Spider Canyon. Mind you, you will need to be able to physically squeeze through 12-inch openings in the rock! There are also other challenging crevices and while you will need the essentials bulky backpacks will make it tricky, to say the least.  

You will have to hike roughly half a mile or so back to the trailhead. Part of it is uphill too. It might be under five miles, but it is a challenge.

8. The Zebra Slot Canyon Hike

The road to the trailhead is a bumpy dirt road but you’ll be on it for under 15 minutes. This hike is under five miles in total. This is a very short but gorgeous canyon.

This hike is a little over five miles out and back with an elevation gain of 300 feet as you must hike uphill on the way back to the trailhead. The slots here are only reportedly about 200 yards in length. There are areas here that are only about 10 inches in width and climbing is required.  

You can download the AllTrails map for this hike on your smartphone. You might want to print it out as well. In fact, having a copy of the map for every member of your hiking party is always a good idea. 

As always, you should check on weather conditions prior to heading out on your hike. In fact, experienced hikers even phone the ranger station here to ensure that there is not too much rainwater in the canyon and to ensure there is no approaching storm. Always be prepared.

9. The Coyote Gulch Hike

Are you in the mood for a great backcountry adventure? If so, consider hiking the Coyote Gulch Trail. This is an adventurous 13-mile hike that requires both time and effort. 

Veteran visitors recommend contacting the staff at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center and inquire about a permit and to get current information on the weather and trail conditions before you begin your adventure. FYI: There are four other official area visitor centers. They are Big Water, Cannonville, Escalante, and Kanab.

10. See The Anasazi State Park Museum

This is actually both a museum and a state park located in Southern Utah. There is also an information center focused on the entire surrounding area, a souvenir store, and an outdoor picnic area as well. Of course, the main attraction here is the rugged ruins of an ancient Anasazi Village. It is formally known as the Coombes Village site. Located in Garfield County, it is open all year.

11. Explore The Escalante Petrified Forest State Park

This state park is also located in Garfield County approximately a half-mile north of the actual town of Escalante. Here you can hike through an actual petrified forest. In fact, the popular Petrified Forest Trail is a single-mile loop, relatively easy, and enjoyable. Other highlights here include the reservoir where you can go kayaking or paddle boarding and the little visitor center museum that’s free to explore.

The Escalante Outfitters Restaurant

This restaurant is actually a part of the nearby Escalante Outfitters store nestled in Escalante. Here you can get coffee, lunch, and dinner. The pizza and beer come highly recommended. The complex also offers visitors pay showers and a laundromat as well. The store itself focuses more on camping-related clothing and other gear.

Kiva Koffeehouse

Also located in Escalante, this place was built to blend in with the environment so if you’re not paying attention you could almost miss it. Use Google Maps if you don’t want to have to turn around and go back. While they do advertise meals, the highlight here is the coffee and pastries. There’s plenty of parking too.

Magnolia’s Street Food Truck  

If you’d just like to grab a bite and go, consider this food truck parked by the earlier-mentioned Anasazi State Park Museum. The park is a fun place to stop and you can grab a bite and go!

14. Accommodations in Grand Staircase-Escalante

If you plan on spending a night or more here, you need to know your options. Camping in the area is an option but permits and reservations may be an issue should you not plan properly.

One suggested possibility is the Bureau of Land Management’s Hole In The Rock. They offer spots where you can even park a trailer. Should you get there early enough, you can even score a spot with an incredible view!

Escalante Outfitters offers cabins with minimal amenities. They sleep up to two people. There’s even a single-family cabin complete with its own bathroom and cable TV. However, there are only seven of them so plan ahead.   

Area RV Parks

If you are traveling in an actual RV, there’s the Escalante Cabins and RV Park! There are other RV options such as Circleville RV Park and Duck Creek Village RV but they are almost two hours away from the park itself.

Last but not least, is the Entrada Escalante Lodge. It is praised for being the area’s “best value hotel.” Suites include kitchenettes and living room spaces.

2. Inspiration Point, Grand Teton National Park

This is an essential short hike for any first-time visitor to Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park. This two-mile hike is rated easy to moderate and should take no more than two hours. You take the convenient Jenny Lake boat shuttle across beautiful Jenny Lake to begin this hike to this famous viewpoint.

On the way to Inspiration Point, you can take a little half-mile detour to thundering Hidden Falls. The remaining half-mile to Inspiration Point is steeper. 3. The Ute Trail to Tombstone Ridge, Rocky Mountain National Park

Catch a “Rocky Mountain High” on this short hike in Colorado. Despite being four miles long, this comparatively short hike is actually officially rated as easy. It should take no more than three hours to complete.  

This hike provides travelers with exceptional views of the Rocky Mountain National Park and again requires little effort. Here you hike across the alpine tundra and enjoy wonderfully unobstructed views of the Continental Divide, Forest Canyon, and Longs Peak too. What more can you ask for, right?

4. The Blue Forest Trail, Petrified Forest National Park

This is a three-mile round trip, off-the-beaten-path short hike. It is not currently well-marked so you or your hiking partner should have route-finding skills. It is rated easy to moderate and should only take between one and two hours. The trail will lead you through the Arizona park’s beautiful Blue Mesa area.  

If you love scenery you will love this little portion of the park. The hills here are highlighted with striking stripes of blues, grays, pinks, and purples. This short trail rises and falls through these unique hills and the views change as you go. Additionally, you will see a surprising amount of the park’s famous petrified wood dotting these hills.

5. The Hidden Lake Overlook, Glacier National Park

This short hike is one of the Montana park’s most popular treks. It is an easy hike, less than three miles total, and should not require more than two hours. The trailhead is at Logan Pass.

You will hike over both gravel trails and boardwalks on your way to Hidden Lake’s awesome overlook. Keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats. This is actually said to be the best place to spot them in the entire park. Enjoy the view from the overlook. If you have more time and energy, consider continuing on for another good mile to the Hidden Lake itself.

6. Ooh Aah Point, Grand Canyon National Park

Doesn’t a short Arizona hike to Ooh Aah Point sound like fun? While it clocks in at under two miles, it is nevertheless rated strenuous and could take you two hours to finish it. This South Rim viewpoint is a favorite though so it’s worth a little effort.

Besides, you can only get to this viewpoint on foot. The hike is notably steep but the view here is breathtaking. The two best times to hike here are right before sunrise and right before sunset.

Those in the know confess the hike back up to the canyon’s rim is why it is considered difficult. Still, they also agree this is a great short hike to travel below the canyon’s rim. Some travel bloggers also like the South Kaibab Trail compared to the more well-known Bright Angel Trail.

If you are unable to plan your hike of the latter in order to avoid other hikers, it is an option. If you are able to hike the entire canyon rim to rim, you will not worry about the perceived difference in views. You’ll see everything.

7. Balanced Rock, Big Bend National Park

Texas’ 2.2-mile Balanced Rock hike is a comparatively easy hike that requires no more than two hours to complete. One small part of rock scrambling is fun for kids of all ages too. Specifically, it is the last quarter of a mile that is a little challenging and fun.  

That’s where you have to do a bit of rock scrambling to get past the big boulders on the trail. Most of this hiking trail though is through a flat, sandy, wide wash. Of course, the main reason for this specific hike is to actually see Balanced Rock. It is one of the park’s most distinctive rock formations. You will find it at the end of the trail. People love to take pictures here too.

8. Bearfence Mountain, Shenandoah National Park

Travel to Virginia and enjoy this short, moderately difficult hike. It should take you only an hour to cover this 1.1 mile-hike. It is brief but includes some fun rock scrambling like the previous hike.

Here you scramble up a sheer but short rock wall and several large, jagged boulders to get to the top of the mountain. Indeed, the views from atop Bearfence are spectacular. It is one of the few places in this popular park where you can take in a 360-degree view.

9. Delicate Arch, Arches National Park

Utah’s hike to the famous Delicate Arch is three miles in total, moderately difficult, and could take you as long as three hours to complete. Many people travel here as this arch is one of the world’s most famous geologic formations. You can only really get close to it by hiking to it.

You hike a gravel path and then complete a strenuous, short climb up slickrock. Here it becomes fun as you hike amidst huge sandstone rock domes. Finally, you hike along a rock ledge along a rock wall.  

Just know that caution is paramount here as there is actually a drop-off on one side. Around the last little turn, you can enjoy your first close view of the popular Delicate Arch. Veteran visitors say you should plan on arriving just before sunset since the setting sun reportedly casts the entire arch in a surprisingly warm glow.

10. The Natural Entrance, Carlsbad Caverns National Park

One of the best experiences in New Mexico is arguably entering Carlsbad Caverns via the Natural Entrance. All you need to do is complete this easy 1.2-mile hike. If you take your time it should still only take an hour.  

The trail is not only well-maintained, but it is also paved and winds right down into the Caverns’ mouth. Allow your eyes a moment as they adjust to low lighting as your journey beneath the earth continues. Take in the sight of the distinctive dripstones and other rocky formations. When you reach the Big Room, you can continue on another mile or so through the country’s largest cave chamber then take the elevator to the surface.

11. The Canyon Overlook Trail, Zion National Park

Here is another short hike in Utah. It’s an easy one-mile walk that shouldn’t require more than one hour. Not only is it fun for all ability levels and ages, but it also takes you to an incredible viewpoint overlooking the famous canyon. Travel writers claim it will even keep your kids entertained for the whole hike as you will hike along rugged cliffs, through a real cave, and over huge tree roots and rocks as well.

12. The Skyline Trail to Panoramic Point, Mount Rainier National Park

Venture to Washington State for two to three hours and complete this short albeit strenuous four-mile hike. The popular Skyline Trail is one of the park’s best hikes. It’s a notably strenuous loop hike that is more than six miles in length. You can cut off a couple of miles by stopping at Panoramic Point.  

That way, if you don’t feel up to a challenging, lengthy hike you can still enjoy magnificent views. Your adventurous short hike begins at the Paradise Visitor Center. From there you hike uphill to popular Panoramic Point. Remember though that even if you visit in summer, the trail still might be layered with snow.

13. Rialto Beach to Hole in the Wall, Olympic National Park

This easy four-mile hike is little more than a stroll on a Washington State beach. It shouldn’t take more than two hours. The hike begins at the official Rialto Beach parking lot. It ends near the huge sea stacks.  

As you go, you’ll see large piles of driftwood and little tidepools. Check out the ocean along your way and you might see sea lions, otters, and whales there. Once you are at the well-known Hole in the Wall, you might want to explore the coastline too. Summer is fine for this hike but know that if you go too early in the morning the beach may very well be fog covered.

14. The Beehive Trail, Acadia National Park

This strenuous, 1.4-mile hike is one of the most exciting hikes in this park in Maine. It could take you up to three hours to finish it despite its short distance. It is a thrilling, exhilarating climb complete with metal rungs, cliff walks, and an incredible, panoramic view of Mt. Desert Island.

You should note, however, that this short hike also is not for anyone afraid of heights. This hike includes a significant amount of exposure with ladder climbs and notably narrow cliff trails too. This is also not a child-friendly hike either.

Here’s another noteworthy short hike in Utah. It’s easy and less than two miles. It might take you an hour for this one.

In fact, not only is it easy, but it also provides hikers with some of the very best views in this park. It’s back to Colorado for another popular, short hike in this famous park. It is rated easy to moderate, has a distance of under four miles, and requires no more than three hours to complete. It’s suitable for almost all ages and ability levels as well.

It is highlighted by beautiful scenery and a trio of lovely lakes including Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, and Nymph Lake. 17. Moro Rock, Sequoia National Park

Wait! Have we not mentioned California yet? Have no fear! This Golden State hike is noteworthy for a number of different reasons.

With a distance of only 0.6 miles, it is the shortest short hike on this list. It should take no more than half an hour. It is still rated moderately difficult because in order to actually reach the top of Moro Rock, you will have to climb a total of 400 steps. Ah, but the view from the rugged summit of this natural granite dome is nothing less than fabulous. Here you can not only look out over striking Sequoia National Park but also the nearby Kings Canyon National Park.

18. The Notch Trail, Badlands National Park

Let’s not ignore the state of South Dakota either. For it is here that you can discover the popular Notch Trail. This is an easy short hike but is quite fun. With a total distance of just one and a half miles round-trip, this family-friendly hike can provide an hour of adventure for adults and children alike.

Next on our list, we return to Utah. For it is here that hikers can enjoy a short and classic hike to nigh-world-famous Cassidy Arch. You only need between two and three hours to complete this moderate, 3.4-mile hike.

Some experienced hikers say this is one of the park’s “most thrilling” hiking trails. This short hike is accessible from the well-traveled Scenic Drive. Not only will you eventually be able to actually stand right on famous Cassidy Arch but will take in views of the great Grand Wash and other noteworthy scenery as well. 20. Golden Canyon and Gower Gulch Loop, Death Valley National Park

Last but not least, is this short hike in distinctive Death Valley National Park which actually straddles the border of Nevada and California. This loop hike is rated easy to moderate and has a distance of 4.4 miles. It begins with a hike through Golden Canyon.

Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

Most people visit this park in the summer or the early fall. In May, the weather is mild and the temperature never goes higher than 71 degrees Fahrenheit. One disadvantage to visiting in May is that the ranger-led tours to the well-known cliff dwellings here are only available during the park’s peak season.

Nevertheless, some of the tours do run in May and the tour of the famous Cliff Palace is available at the end of the month. Additionally, there are fewer people there in May than in the summer. Drive the scenic road, enjoy the overlooks, and check out the Wetherill Mesa area. 

Wetherill Mesa Road opens at the start of the month so you can bike or hike the popular five-mile Long House Loop. Tour Balcony House too. If you visit later in the month, you can take the ranger-led tour of Long House as well.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

In May the average high temperature is 86 degrees Fahrenheit. While veteran visitors can confirm it can sometimes be a bit hotter, it is actually a dry heat so it doesn’t feel as bad. Weather-wise, the shoulder season is best for outdoor activities.

Once June hits, the temperatures climb a bit too high to really enjoy this place. Hence, the beginning of May is the best time to visit. Spring is also not a bad time to visit but the most popular areas are busy and campsites in and even near the park are often booked to the limit.

Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

This national park offers exercise and relaxation. You can go hiking and then head for the historic bathhouses and soak in the hot spring water. May is a great time to visit too because it doesn’t get hotter than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once you’ve had your fill of hiking you can also dine and even shop in town where the park is located. This is possibly one of the more luxurious national park visits, all things considered. Even if it gets a tad humid, there’s plenty to do here both outside and inside.  

The bathhouses of Hot Springs have been a must-visit place since the 1800s. In fact, the Buckstaff Baths have been open for more than a century! Where else can you relax and soak up the history, right?

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Regular readers know that while your rovin’ writer hiked the world-famous Grand Canyon rim to rim in the summer, there is no doubt it would have been easier in the month of May. In fact, the comparatively mild spring weather of May is a great time to visit this park (and other state attractions) as it is generally not hotter than 71 degrees Fahrenheit. At night it might get cold in the canyon so do your hiking during the day.  

If you do any of the lengthier hikes, be aware that during the day it’s warmer in the canyon than at the rim, so carry enough water and dress appropriately. If you plan on checking out the North Rim, visit there in the last half of May in case of a road closure. Then again, the most iconic viewpoints are found at the South Rim.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

The best time to see North America’s tallest sand dunes is in May. If you visit earlier, there could be an afternoon storm, the winds are higher and it might still snow. In the summer, the temperature of the sand can soar to a sizzling 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

In May this park doesn’t get hotter than 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Mind you, this place is actually a great location for stargazing and hiking. It’s also home to a surprisingly diverse landscape. 

So after you go sand-sledding or sandboarding, explore the forests, grasslands, wetlands, and alpine lakes. (Note that if you’re only planning on visiting the alpine lakes, summer, though more crowded is better weather-wise.) Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Canyonlands is a great nature destination to see in the month of May. It is often less busy than other national parks in Utah and in May it’s no hotter than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don’t spend too much time in the lower areas though, it may even be a little cooler.

Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

The temperature in this unique, popular park is never higher than 80 degrees Fahrenheit in May. More importantly, the winters are cold and snowy and summer not only means higher temperatures but, believe it or not, it’s monsoon season. Here you will discover ancient, colorful towering trees that are more than 200 million years old.

The lovely landscape of the rainbow-colored Painted Desert is also impressive. There are many things to do here including biking, hiking, and taking ranger-led tours. You can even drive around and enjoy an outlook or two.

Be sure to see Puerco Pueblo. It features the remains of an ancient 12th and 13th-century village. Stop in at the historic Painted Desert Inn which is now a museum. Check out the intriguing Newspaper Rock petroglyphs and Hopi murals as well.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

Veteran visitors can confirm that Spring is the best time to see this park. More specifically, see it in the month of May. Indeed, spending on the elevation, it can be very hot in certain sections but in the month of May the temperature peaks at 67 degrees Fahrenheit.

Capitol Reef National Park, another one of the state’s “Mighty 5” national parks, is another great place to be in May. The temperature peaks at 73 degrees Fahrenheit so the weather is sunny and mild. May is one of the busiest months here, but it is also not crowded either because it is one of the state’s lesser-visited national parks.

There are a lot of pretty wildflowers here in May and the rivers are rushing with water too. Still, it’s very large and includes three distinctly different sections. May is a great time to visit this park. Death Valley National Park, California

If you’ve been to Oahu but want to do spring break in Hawaii again, visit Maui. In the months of March and April, the temperature remains steadily in the low 70s. There are significant differences in temperatures though if you visit specific parts of the island.  

For example, the temperature at the volcano is a lot different than on the beach. Much like Oahu, Maui offers a memorable mix of beautiful beaches, lovely, lush landscapes, outdoor activities, local traditions, and culture. Attend a traditional Hawaiian feast known as a luau.

Cruise the scenic Road to Hana, which is highlighted by waterfalls and stunning coastal scenery. See the sunrise from atop a volcano at Haleakala National Park, Need more? You can bike or even zip-line down the volcano too. You can snorkel and go swimming with turtles as well.

Disney World, Florida

Tired of the college crowds at the beach? Head to Orlando, home of Disney World. A family-friendly world all its own, it contains four individual theme parks, the Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center, Hollywood Studios, and the Animal Kingdom. There’s also a pair of water parks, more than two dozen resorts, a number of restaurants, and the super shopping center known as Disney Springs.

Daytime temperatures top off somewhere between 76 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit. There’s significantly less rain than in the summer too. There’s something for everyone here.

There are rides, and entertaining characters and even the food is better than in other theme parks. There’s also an aquarium, a zoo, and educational, interactive exhibits. Don’t miss the Star Wars and Toy Story areas either! It can be busy though so plan your visit before you go.

The Grand Canyon, Arizona

Last but certainly not least, on our list of 17 best spring destinations is the world-famous Grand Canyon. Trust your rovin’ writer who hiked this natural wonder rim-to-rim in the summer, while any time you get to visit this place is good, spring is as good as it will get. Spring weather here is generally dry and the average temperature ranges from between 53 and 61 degrees Fahrenheit at the South Rim and it’s significantly warmer in the canyon itself.  

Even though it’s still a busy place, you will beat the sometimes dangerous heat and the summer tourists too! Spring is perfect for hiking and sightseeing.
