What typical vacation does not include an ocean, lake, pond or some other body of water? Unfortunately, there are some bodies of water that can be dangerous if not downright deadly to the uninformed. There are several places that are best admired from a significantly safe distance.<br />
The bottom line is: There is a reason for “No Swimming” signs. If you don’t believe that, then read on, people! (If that’s not enough to make you careful when you wary of strange waterholes, be sure you don’t miss the unsavory bonus featurette at the end of this article.</p>
<h4>10. The Great Blue Hole, Belize<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="730" height="486" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5011" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/10-6.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/10-6.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/10-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/10-6-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/10-6-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></h4>
<p>Here in Belize, the tides actually turn the infamous Great Blue Hole into a large vortex that actually draws anything and everything on the water’s surface. At the same time, ebbs also make this place spout incredibly high columns of water. In spite of all of this incredible activity, there are a lot of people who still want to see this incredible place. In fact, former French naval officer and famous undersea explorer once referred to the fearsome Great Blue Hole as one of the very best places for scuba diving on the planet.<br />

<h3>9. Jacob&#8217;s Well, US</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="728" height="1120" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5013" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/9-5.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/9-5.jpg 728w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/9-5-195x300.jpg 195w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/9-5-666x1024.jpg 666w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/9-5-696x1071.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/9-5-273x420.jpg 273w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /><br />
Jacob’s Well is one of those unusual but unique sites in the United States. It is located in the state of Texas just northwest of Wimberly in the Texas Hill Country. This natural well is 30 feet deep.<br />
The mouth of the spring is a popular local swimming hole. Nevertheless, this place is one of the most dangerous diving spots on the planet. Indeed, at the well’s bottom, there are some entrances to cave networks from which many have been unable to exit.<br />

<h3>8. Lake Michigan, US<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="730" height="442" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5014" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/8-7.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/8-7.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/8-7-300x182.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/8-7-696x421.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/8-7-694x420.jpg 694w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></h3>
<p>One of North America’s four Great Lakes, Lake Michigan is also the only one located entirely in the US. Lake Michigan is also reported to be almost as infamous as the famous Bermuda Triangle. It was over this lake that one of the most terrible air crashes on the continent’s history. To this day, no logical reason can be found for the tragedy. Additionally, this lake has sudden forming currents that take the lives of dozens of people annually.<br />

<h3>7. Lake Natron, Tanzania<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="728" height="945" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5015" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/7-6.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/7-6.jpg 728w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/7-6-231x300.jpg 231w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/7-6-696x903.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/7-6-324x420.jpg 324w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></h3>
<p>Lake Natron in Tanzania’s Gregory Rift in the Arusha Region is one of the planet’s most alkaline and saltiest lakes. This lake is topped with a crust of salt that is often tinted red. The temperature of the water in Lake Natron regularly reaches 120°F or 50°C in certain areas, Add this the actual alkalinity, and the lake is practically unfit for life. In fact, only three types of fish have adapted to the extreme living conditions.<br />

<p>The Blue Hole is found on the coast of the famous Red Sea just a few kilometers north of Dahab in Egypt. This area is arguably one of the world’s most dangerous places for diving. A lot of divers have lost their lives in this infamous 400-foot deep cave. Experts confirm that only experienced divers are capable of diving here. Amateurs and new divers often die here due to inert gas narcosis or “insufficient air capacity” upon resurfacing.<br />

<h3>5. Horseshoe Lake, US<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="728" height="533" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5019" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/5-8.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/5-8.jpg 728w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/5-8-300x220.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/5-8-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/5-8-696x510.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/5-8-574x420.jpg 574w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></h3>
<p>Horseshoe Lake is situated in the eastern section of the popular Lassen Volcanic National Park close to Juniper Lake in Shasta County, California. The numerous fissures within the bottom of this lake emit a significant amount of carbon dioxide which is deadly to practically everything. This lake has caused the death of at least four people as this goes to press. It has also killed the trees that once grew on the 100+ acres surrounding it. Warning signs are posted all over the property.<br />
<b><span style="color: #191e23;">(Continued on next page)</span></b><span style="display: inline !important; float: none; background-color: transparent; color: #191e23; cursor: text; font-family: 'Noto Serif'; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;"></span></p>
<h3>4. The Boiling Lake, Dominica<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="730" height="487" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5021" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/4-7.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/4-7.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/4-7-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/4-7-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/4-7-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></h3>
<p>The Boiling Lake is situated in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, is just 10.5 kilometers or 6.5 miles east of the capital city of Roseau. It is also the world’s second-largest hot lake. The Boiling Lake’s waters can heat up to a temperature of 92°C or 198°F.<br />
This is because of the spurts of heated air that come from under the ground. It’s against the law to go swimming here. Even when there are no telltale characteristic bubbles on the water’s surface, the lake can boil in mere seconds.<br />

<h3>3. Rio Tinto, Portugal, and Spain<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="728" height="791" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5022" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/3-6.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/3-6.jpg 728w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/3-6-276x300.jpg 276w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/3-6-696x756.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/3-6-387x420.jpg 387w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></h3>
<p>The head of Rio Tinto, or Tinto River, has been a fossil excavation site for over 3,000 years. This river is truly saturated with iron, copper, and heavy metals. Thus, the water’s acidity levels are sky-high. Despite the rising acidity of this river, the water’s ecosystem remains in operation. It now includes specific bacteria that actually oxidize metals and turns the color of the water to bright red.<br />

<h3>2. The Drake Passage<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="730" height="487" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5023" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2-7.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2-7.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2-7-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2-7-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/2-7-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></h3>
<p>In order for a ship’s passengers and crew to survive the Drake Passage, they must meet the challenges of strong currents, numerous icebergs, poor visibility, and wind speeds up to 80 miles per hour. Located between the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica and South America’s Cape Horn, this passage has been a ship cemetery for sea vessels that capsized here from Magellan&#8217;s times ‘til the erection of the Panama Canal in the 1900s.<br />

<h3>1. Lake Kivu<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="730" height="487" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5028" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1-6.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1-6.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1-6-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1-6-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></h3>
<p>Situated on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes. It may appear to be peaceful but it holds a deadly secret. The lake not only contains multiple layers of CO2 but also 55 billion cubic meters of methane on the bottom. Just one slight earthquake could set off an explosion that would kill more than 2 million locals living in the area.</p>
<h4>Creatures From The Deep<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="733" height="384" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5029" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/15052410-facebook-lamprey-1499953524-650-1ee056af8f-1539172284.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/15052410-facebook-lamprey-1499953524-650-1ee056af8f-1539172284.jpg 733w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/15052410-facebook-lamprey-1499953524-650-1ee056af8f-1539172284-300x157.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/15052410-facebook-lamprey-1499953524-650-1ee056af8f-1539172284-696x365.jpg 696w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px" /></h4>
<p>The truth is any place you choose to swim, be it a lake, a river or an ocean, can be unsafe. Even tourist spots can sometimes be populated by hagfish, lampreys, leeches, and other unpleasant water-dwellers. So do your due diligence on any body of water you’re considering exploring.</p>
