Surely you had enough hearts and cupids in February, right?  But seriously, isn’t love a part of the winter holidays?  With that thought in mind, we have discovered several pictures that some might say are little more than wishful thinking or some elaborate illusion that only those with love-struck hearts can see.

1. Praia da Marinha, Algarve, Portugal

If you’re taking a romantic getaway to Portugal then you simply must stop at Praia da Marinha.  This beach is in the southernmost section of the country known as Algarve.  The popular Praia da Marinha Beach boasts of more than clear water and pristine sand, but also of this fairly famous heart-shaped cliff as well.

Lava rock, Maui, Hawaii, USA

Are you heading to Hawaii for some fun in the sun?  If so, be sure to spend a little time on the idyllic island of Maui.  It’s over 727 square miles in total and thus the second-largest island in Hawaii.  When you go exploring the isle, be sure to pay close attention to the lava rock there.  You’re sure to spot the natural heart-shaped hole in the rock.

Galesnjak, Croatia

Galesnjak is an island nestled in the Adriatic Sea’s Pašman Canal.  You’ll find it between the quaint town of Turanj on the mainland and the nearby islands of Pašman.  Galesnjak is popularly known as the “Lover’s Island.”

This could be because it’s one of the planet’s few naturally heart-shaped objects.  The island actually hosts special boat rides for Valentine’s Day.  You’d better book now so you don’t miss out!

The serene Heart Reef is composed of coral and is located in the world-famous Great Barrier Reef.  You will find it pretty close to the romantic Whitsunday Islands.   This stunning heart-shaped reef is perhaps best experienced by air, via seaplane, light plane, or helicopter.  (Due to its protected status, there is no scuba diving or snorkeling permitted here.)

If you live in California or simply like to go hiking there, this could be perfect for an activity that is both romantic and athletic.  Head out for the Kearsarge Pass Trail in the stunning Sierra Nevada Mountains.  Heart Lake may be diminutive but it’s strategically located above Castle Lake.  Thus, it offers visitors some exceptional views of massive Mount Shasta.

Chudskoy Lake, The Arctic

Some places do, indeed, have love written all over them.  Ah, but If you decide to visit Chudskoy Lake, pack appropriately and be ready to travel to the very top of the world.  Oddly, not even the oldest travel websites have a lot of information on this heart-shaped spot but, hey, that just adds to the mystery right?  So if you want to travel to a place where heart-warming romance meets the icy cold of the arctic.

Chamar-Daban, Russia

You can spot this heart-shape in the striking Chamar Daban (a.k.a. Hanar-Daban) mountain range located mainly in Buryatia in southern Siberia, Russia.  It’s close to the rugged Baikal Mountains and lovely Lake Baikal.  Chamar-Daban has a peak elevation of 2,396 meters.  For rock climbers and hikers this could very well be a very romantic place for a marriage proposal.

Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA

The Joshua Tree National Park is nestled in south-central California.  It features two unique desert climates.  There is the low altitude Colorado Desert which includes cacti, creosote bush,  and other flora.

There’s also the cooler, moister, higher Mojave Desert too which is the only place you’ll find Joshua trees.  Notice the heart-shaped cactus?  Perhaps it’s a natural reminder that sometimes love hurts.

Trnovacko Lake, Montenegro

This well-known lake is situated in northern Montenegro, at an altitude of approximately 1,517 meters.  The lake is 400 meters wide and 700 meters long.  It is ensconced in what some call a large “amphitheater of rocky peaks.”  This blue-green lake is quite popular with summer campers.  Its heart-shape makes it look like it belongs in a Disney fairytale.

Meke Crater Lake).  This volcanic crater lake actually includes a pair of nested lakes.  The crater is found in Karapınar in central Turkey’s Konya province.  The spot is a national natural monument as well as an official Ramsar site.
