<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hawaii, the 50th state in the USA, will undoubtedly be on most travel bucket lists for years to come. This exotic archipelago state is famously known as the “Paradise of the Pacific.” If you want to do more than just hit the tourist spots though, here are 25 unbelievable hidden gems in Hawaii.</span></p>
<h4><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">25 Unbelievable Hidden Gems in Hawaii</span></i></h4>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">1. The Bamboo Forest, Maui</span></h2>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17466" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-bamboo-forest-514588_1280.jpg" alt="" width="877" height="495" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-bamboo-forest-514588_1280.jpg 877w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-bamboo-forest-514588_1280-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-bamboo-forest-514588_1280-768x433.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-bamboo-forest-514588_1280-696x393.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-bamboo-forest-514588_1280-744x420.jpg 744w" sizes="(max-width: 877px) 100vw, 877px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Bamboo Forest is located along the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakala National Park on the Road to Hana on the island of Maui. The trail is roughly four miles in length but will take you to both the Waimoku Falls and Makahiku Falls. The forest is densely packed with trees that provide visitors with both shade and atmosphere. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here insects whirl and clack and birds twitter. For safety reasons, avoid swimming at the top or bottom of the falls. Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic scene seen only by those willing to make the hike.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">2. Kawela Bay, Oahu</span></h2>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17468" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2-flickr.jpg" alt="" width="751" height="501" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2-flickr.jpg 751w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2-flickr-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2-flickr-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2-flickr-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kawela Bay is a secluded beach nestled near Oahu’s northern tip. The area is protected by the North Shore Community Land Trust in accordance with the wishes of local residents. As this goes to press, it remains relatively undeveloped despite previously proposed development plans.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It is highlighted by unique banyan trees and has even appeared in such feature films as </span><a href="https://youtu.be/rn4BN1G5_js" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Hunger Games: Catching Fires</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. It’s a great place to reconnect with nature and avoid crowds. Here you can picnic, paddleboard, and swim if you don’t mind access to few facilities.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">3. The Kalalau Trail, Kauai</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17469 alignleft" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/3.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="600" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/3.jpg 450w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/3-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/3-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The well-known Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile-long trail that leads along the striking Na Pali Coast on the island of Kauai. It is a challenging, remote, rugged yet exceptionally beautiful trail. In fact, hiking parts of this trail requires a permit, and going with a guide is recommended. You will discover a number of superb waterfalls and sublime beaches such as the somewhat secluded and cozy Kalalau Beach, a.k.a. the Secret Beach. You are only allowed to camp along this trail in two places. There are composting toilets, but no seating areas, or potable water.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">4. The Sanju Pagoda, Oahu</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17470 alignleft" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/4-wikia.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="600" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/4-wikia.jpg 450w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/4-wikia-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/4-wikia-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You will find this three-level structure on the isle of Oahu in Honolulu Memorial Park. It is a large replica of the revered Minami Hoke-ji Temple located in Nara, Japan.  The building stands 119 feet high and features fine Japanese designs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The structure is built out of concrete, not wood. It is also in the official National Register of Historic Places. It dates back to 1966 and is actually one of the tallest temples in the country, perhaps even the world. Currently unsafe to enter, but you can still appreciate it from the outside.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">5. Raëlian UFO Peace Park, Big Island</span></h2>
<figure id="attachment_17471" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-17471" style="width: 675px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17471" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/5-Image-courtesy-of-Generation-Exorcist-WordPress.jpg" alt="" width="675" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/5-Image-courtesy-of-Generation-Exorcist-WordPress.jpg 675w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/5-Image-courtesy-of-Generation-Exorcist-WordPress-300x224.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/5-Image-courtesy-of-Generation-Exorcist-WordPress-561x420.jpg 561w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/5-Image-courtesy-of-Generation-Exorcist-WordPress-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/5-Image-courtesy-of-Generation-Exorcist-WordPress-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-17471" class="wp-caption-text">Image courtesy of WordPress/Generation Exorcist</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The distinctive Raëlian UFO Peace Park is a unique sculpture park located in Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Here you’ll see several different sculptures and a model of an unusual galactic embassy the Raelian UFO religious group wants to build there. The Raelian religion, founded by Claude “Ral” Vorilhon, believes life here was created by aliens known as the Elohim. The main sculpture is a large nude woman with the official Raelian symbol on her chest. There are also sculptures of chameleons, native birds, peacocks, and a sea turtle too.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">6. Keahiakawelo, Lanai</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17473" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/6-wiki.jpg" alt="" width="673" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/6-wiki.jpg 673w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/6-wiki-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/6-wiki-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/6-wiki-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/6-wiki-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also called the Garden of the Gods, Keahiakawelo, also known as the Garden of the Gods, is a group of noteworthy natural rock formations on Lanai. Here the reddish, arid earth is dotted with various shapes and sizes of boulders. It’s speculated that previous visitors created these tiny towers and designs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Local legend warns that visitors who tamper with these stones risk the wrath of ancient gods. Others note that two men from Lanai and Molokai were competing to see who could keep a fire burning the longest. Their efforts to win created this place.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">7. Harold L. Lyon Arboretum, Oahu</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17474" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/7-flickr.jpg" alt="" width="990" height="495" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/7-flickr.jpg 990w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/7-flickr-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/7-flickr-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/7-flickr-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/7-flickr-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 990px) 100vw, 990px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This hidden gem in Honolulu is actually named after the ex-director of the Hawaii Sugar Planters’ Association who also studied plant diseases. Tourists typically come to this area to see the Manoa Falls and often ignore this fertile, lush garden. Thus, this is a great place to get off the beaten path especially if you are at all interested in plants and nature. The arboretum includes 12 gardens and seven miles of trails to explore and a variety of tropical flora and rare and endangered species of Hawaiian plants. Don’t miss Aihualama Falls!  </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">8. Glass Beach, Kauai</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17475" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/8-flickr-1.jpg" alt="" width="673" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/8-flickr-1.jpg 673w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/8-flickr-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/8-flickr-1-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/8-flickr-1-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/8-flickr-1-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Glass Beach is in Eleele on the island of Kauai. It’s both unusual and unique and worth the detour off the typical tourist trail. It’s admittedly not the place for fun with beach blanket Barbie, but there’s something visually attractive about the rounded, smooth pieces of multi-colored glass that are strewn across the basalt rocks here. These pretty pebble-like pieces of glass accumulated on this beach are the result of the ebb and flow of ocean waves smoothing and removing the sharp edges of broken bottles and other glass discarded in the area.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">9. The Kaumana Lava Tubes, Big Island</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17476" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/9-flic.jpg" alt="" width="780" height="495" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/9-flic.jpg 780w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/9-flic-300x190.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/9-flic-768x487.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/9-flic-696x442.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/9-flic-662x420.jpg 662w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Close to Hilo, the intriguing Kaumana Lava Tubes are a comparatively unknown hidden gem on the popular Big Island. These tubes are the result of hot volcanic lava forcefully flowing through the earth. Travel writers report that the tubes here are actually more natural and authentic than other more commercialized tubes elsewhere. The tubes can be explored, but there are no official guides here, so you are solely responsible for your own safety. If you want to deeply explore these caverns, you’ll need a flashlight. Watch the slippery, jagged rocks!</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">10. The Coco Palms Resort, Kauai</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17477" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/10-flic.jpg" alt="" width="673" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/10-flic.jpg 673w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/10-flic-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/10-flic-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/10-flic-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/10-flic-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you appreciate history and tradition, visit the famous Coco Palms Resort in Wailua. This resort was the first resort on the entire island. It opened back in the 1950s and played host to such famous folks as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. This once pricey and opulent place was the preferred playground for the day’s rich and famous. In 1992 it was trashed by Hurricane Iniki and more recently damaged by a fire. Now ruined, the building’s shell has yet to be razed because the demolition plans remain in legal limbo due to disputes over land ownership.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">11. A Hawaii Volcano Treehouse Rental, Big Island</span></h2>
<figure id="attachment_17478" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-17478" style="width: 689px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17478" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/11-Image-courtesy-of-Pinterest-Swirled.jpg" alt="Hawaii" width="689" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/11-Image-courtesy-of-Pinterest-Swirled.jpg 689w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/11-Image-courtesy-of-Pinterest-Swirled-300x220.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/11-Image-courtesy-of-Pinterest-Swirled-573x420.jpg 573w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/11-Image-courtesy-of-Pinterest-Swirled-80x60.jpg 80w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-17478" class="wp-caption-text">Image courtesy of Pinterest Swirled</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you still haven’t booked a place to stay, consider a Hawaii Volcano Treehouse rental, conveniently close to the popular Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. These rental tree houses tower 20 feet high and are an exceptional way to get in touch with nature while also spending time in a memorable setting that can be either family-friendly or romantic. These rustic tree houses are mainly built of wood, are eco-friendly, and are built in the trees with branches close to the structures. Amenities include a bathroom, comfortable beds, wooden furnishings, and a canopied skywalk.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">12. The Island Of Niihau</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17479" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/12-wiki.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="500" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/12-wiki.jpg 750w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/12-wiki-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/12-wiki-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/12-wiki-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Niihau spans an area of less than 70 square miles and is a privately-owned island purchased from the then-Kingdom of Hawaii in 1864. Estimates of the population vary from 30 or 40 to 300. This island has no WiFi, poor TV reception, no electricity other than that generated by solar power, and no running water.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Rain catchments are used to supply locals with water. If the water supply becomes low, residents relocate ‘til it rains again. The only way to visit this “Forbidden Island” is to take a beach tour or hunting expedition.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">13. The Kukaniloko Birthing Stones, Oahu</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17480" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/13-flic.jpg" alt="" width="751" height="501" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/13-flic.jpg 751w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/13-flic-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/13-flic-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/13-flic-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While typical tourists tend to drive right by them, the Kukaniloko Birthing Stones on Oahu, near Wahiawa, Hawaii are hidden gems. They mark a significant historical site. These stones might look as if they were arranged haphazardly, but they commemorate major battles and royal births as well.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ancient islanders once thought the stones also designated this place to be where the isle’s natural forces were the strongest. This place was considered sacred. It not only served as a ritualistic birthplace for future chieftains but was also thought to be astronomically significant too.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">14. The Dunes, Kauai</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17481" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/14-flic.jpg" alt="" width="751" height="499" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/14-flic.jpg 751w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/14-flic-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/14-flic-696x462.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/14-flic-632x420.jpg 632w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Travel back through the mists of time to this peculiar prehistoric landscape of odd stone sand dunes. Yes, here hidden by the cliffs close to Koloa, you will actually see stone sand dunes. Indeed, originally made of sand, these dunes went through the process of lithification.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In other words, over time the sand dunes were compacted by pressure, lost their porosity, and <a href="https://youtu.be/BDhJU_cNCZE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">turned to stone</a>. Today, they present an olden, otherworldly, striking sand-colored contrast to the blue of the sea. Hike here or rent a 4WD vehicle as the road here is in pretty bad shape!  </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">15. The Waimanu Valley, Big Island</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17482" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/15-feature-flic-1.jpg" alt="" width="671" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/15-feature-flic-1.jpg 671w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/15-feature-flic-1-300x226.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/15-feature-flic-1-558x420.jpg 558w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/15-feature-flic-1-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/15-feature-flic-1-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Waimanu Valley is a hidden gem and Hamakua Coast’s largest valley. Tourists avoid it because the journey there includes a nine-mile hike. The Muliwai Trail takes you by splashing cascades and picturesque streams.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The path can become quite slick so be sure to pack trekking poles with your other hiking equipment. You should also reserve a camping spot in advance. The black sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing and the crystal-clear water is good for swimming. The views are stunning with a lush valley on one side and water on the other.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">16. The Makauwahi Cave, Kauai</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17483" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/16-flic.jpg" alt="" width="803" height="495" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/16-flic.jpg 803w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/16-flic-300x185.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/16-flic-768x473.jpg 768w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/16-flic-696x429.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/16-flic-681x420.jpg 681w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/16-flic-356x220.jpg 356w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 803px) 100vw, 803px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Makauwahi Cave is an under-visited hidden gem. It is also one of the island’s largest caves. The cave covers the subjects of archeology, history, and, of course, nature.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here you’ll discover fascinating fossils that’ll give you a glimpse into the island’s past. Like some ancient diary, the cave’s layers tell a tale of Kauai’s history. Explore this sinkhole, formed from the inward collapse of a fantastic fossilized sand dune.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Study plant and animal fossils that were here before man. Visit Mahaulepu Beach too. It was a shooting location for </span><a href="https://youtu.be/en6L8AiAM5E" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">17. Ching’s Pond, Maui</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17484" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/17-flic.jpg" alt="" width="673" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/17-flic.jpg 673w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/17-flic-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/17-flic-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/17-flic-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/17-flic-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Also popularly known as the Blue Sapphire Pools, Ching’s Pond is hidden from the road. This is a popular, local hangout and while it is quiet on weekdays, it is often crowded on the weekends. The bubbly Palauhulu Stream gently flows through here beneath a bridge.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Below that bridge, you will spot some striking sapphire pools. It’s so pretty you’d almost think fairies and nymphs live here. There are but two hiking trails to reach this spot. The less challenging trail is marked by a big tree just 50 feet from the bridge.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">18. The Kau Desert, Big Island</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17485 alignleft" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/18-flic.jpg" alt="Hawaii" width="505" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/18-flic.jpg 505w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/18-flic-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/18-flic-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/18-flic-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hawaii’s Big Island is home to the expansive Kau Desert. This lunar-like landscape includes a natural floor of gravel, sand, and volcanic ash dotted with boulders and solidified lava. The desolate landscape is almost completely devoid of wildlife and green plants.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The rain that does fall on this torrid terrain is generally too acidic to be beneficial. The water droplets in the air mix with the sulfur dioxide from the various volcanic vents here to create toxic rain. Hikers who plan on braving this place should remember that if the volcanoes are too active, the trails may be closed.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">19. The Vintage Cave Club, Oahu</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17486" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/19-flcirk.jpg" alt="" width="673" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/19-flcirk.jpg 673w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/19-flcirk-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/19-flcirk-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/19-flcirk-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/19-flcirk-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The critically-acclaimed Vintage Cave Club is said to be one of the most luxurious (albeit costly) restaurants in the state. While it’s not exactly a “hidden” gem, it makes the cost to dine here at this exclusive, and stylish restaurant keeps many tourists away. Still, if you win the lottery and want to spoil yourself, this is one place to do it.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It offers distinctive dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant includes a well-stocked bar and wine cellar, and walls adorned with artwork by Picasso, Anton Molnar, and others.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">20. Lanai Cat Sanctuary, Lanai</span></h2>
<figure id="attachment_17487" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-17487" style="width: 673px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17487" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20-Image-courtesy-of-WordPress-Susan-Dorling.jpg" alt="Hawaii" width="673" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20-Image-courtesy-of-WordPress-Susan-Dorling.jpg 673w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20-Image-courtesy-of-WordPress-Susan-Dorling-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20-Image-courtesy-of-WordPress-Susan-Dorling-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20-Image-courtesy-of-WordPress-Susan-Dorling-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20-Image-courtesy-of-WordPress-Susan-Dorling-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-17487" class="wp-caption-text">Image courtesy of WordPress and Susan Dorling</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="https://youtu.be/kxu404TBs40" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“What’s new pussycat?”</a> If you like cuddly cats, the Lanai Cat Sanctuary is the purr-fect place for you. Here you will find 500 former furry feline strays that have finally found a home at this 25,000-foot furball refuge.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Opened in 2009, this serval sanctuary was founded to rescue and protect unwanted cats and provide them with a safe place to live. By protecting pussies, the sanctuary also aids in the survival of another animal, the ua’u bird. You can come here, play with the local lynxes, lend a paw, and even make a donation.    </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">21. The Pineapple Garden Maze, Oahu</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17488" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/21-flic.jpg" alt="" width="717" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/21-flic.jpg 717w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/21-flic-300x211.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/21-flic-696x490.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/21-flic-596x420.jpg 596w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/21-flic-100x70.jpg 100w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Visit the famous Dole Pineapple Plantation and lose yourself in the popular Pineapple Garden Maze. Those in the know report that this is the largest plant maze on the planet. This pineapple puzzle features 14,000 plants, spans an area of two acres, and includes two and a half miles&#8217; worth of paths. Naturally, some paths lead nowhere, and others are intentionally designed to mislead and confuse people trying to make it through the maze. There’s more than one way out, though, so don’t stress about being lost in the labyrinth forever.  </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">22. The Hindu Himalayan Academy, Kauai</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17489" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/22-flic.jpg" alt="" width="673" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/22-flic.jpg 673w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/22-flic-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/22-flic-560x420.jpg 560w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/22-flic-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/22-flic-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A visit to the Hindu Himalayan Academy might make you feel like you’re in some foreign land like Tibet or Nepal. Ah, but rather than the majestic Himalayan Mountains, the academy is in the heart of a tropical landscape. This memorable monastery was founded by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami. It is a peaceful place where Western ways and Polynesian costumes merge with assorted Eastern religions. This sanctuary serves as both a “global outreach” and a Hindu education center that follows the teachings of numerous gurus from southern India and Sri Lanka.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">23. Shangri La, Oahu</span></h2>
<figure id="attachment_17490" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-17490" style="width: 653px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-17490" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/23-wiki.jpg" alt="" width="653" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/23-wiki.jpg 653w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/23-wiki-300x232.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/23-wiki-543x420.jpg 543w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-17490" class="wp-caption-text">Shangri La is the Honolulu home of American philanthropist Doris Duke. Built in 1937, Shangri La houses an impressive collection of Islamic art and is considered one of Hawaii’s most architecturally significant homes.</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In this case, the literary-inspired name Shangri La concerns a “hidden” collection of interesting Islamic art that focuses on Hinduism and Islam. Philanthropist Doris Duke is the founder of this collection found outside of Honolulu. Shangri La was once Duke’s official Hawaiian hideaway.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">She designed it inspired by her international travels. Here you can see embroideries, paintings, and sculptures that she collected from various places over a number of years. The building overlooks the ocean. It includes an Iranian-style pavilion and a big saltwater pool too.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">24. The Blue Room, Kauai</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17491" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/24-flic.jpg" alt="" width="751" height="501" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/24-flic.jpg 751w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/24-flic-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/24-flic-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/24-flic-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Blue Room in Hawaii is another amazing natural wonder here in Hawaii. You’ll find this hidden gem in the beautiful Waikapalae wet cave situated in Kauai. The Blue Room is “hidden” in the back of a cavern entrance and is thus named because it shines with a shade of deep blue when the level of the water is high enough.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Remember, if you visit, do not get into the water. There are “germ risks.” If you feel like swimming, Ke’e Beach, an exceptional swimming beach, is but a brief stroll away.  </span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">25. The Liljestrand House, Oahu</span></h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-17492" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/25-flic.jpg" alt="Hawaii" width="747" height="505" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/25-flic.jpg 747w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/25-flic-300x203.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/25-flic-696x471.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/25-flic-621x420.jpg 621w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 747px) 100vw, 747px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Historic Liljestrand House was constructed over half a century ago. The Liljestrand couple’s former residence remains an extraordinary example of American-Russian architect, Vladimir Ossipoff’s modernist work. Currently listed on the noteworthy National Register of <a href="https://addtobucketlist.com/20-of-americas-historic-places/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Historic Places</a>, this hidden gem is now owned by the American-Chinese couple’s children.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The couple is quite proud of their parents&#8217; former dream house here in Hawaii. They’ll even show you the clothing their parents wore back in the 1930s. If you would like to visit this home, call and request an appointment to see it in advance.</span></p>

<p><em>Aloha!</em> If you’re craving a tropical vacation complete with a unique spirit, US national parks, and world-class beaches then Hawaii is the place to be. To help you plan your getaway to this vacation bucket list destination, here are the most breathtaking places to visit in Hawaii.</p>
<h4><i>The Most Breathtaking Places To Visit In Hawaii</i></h4>
<h3>1. Oahu’s Beautiful Contrasts</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14906" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/1-1.jpg" alt="" width="751" height="500" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/1-1.jpg 751w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/1-1-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/1-1-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px" /></p>
<p>We begin our (more than) “three-hour tour” on the island of Oahu. Home to most of the Aloha state’s residents, it is highlighted by Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. Also known as “The Heart of Hawaii.” An island of contrasts, it contains a blend of eastern, western, and Native Hawaiian cultures and a mix of surf towns and cities.</p>

<p>Unsurprisingly, the island known as Hawaii is nicknamed “The Big Island” because of its great size. It’s almost twice the size of all the other isles put together. The scenery here can vary per area but you’ll certainly see verdant valleys and beautiful black sand beaches as well.</p>

<h2>Kilauea Volcano</h2>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-14918" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/10.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="500" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/10.jpg 750w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/10-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/10-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/10-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></p>
<p>Kilauea is one of a pair of volcanoes in the aforementioned Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Many have referred to it as &#8220;the world&#8217;s only drive-in volcano&#8221; because you can actually see it from the comfort of your vehicle. Its huge crater is said to be the home of the volcano goddess, Pele. For an entire decade, it was filled with lava but in 2018 it all disappeared when the crater walls fell.</p>

<h2>The Island That Grows</h2>

<p>File this one under “F” for “fun and fascinating.” As the boiling hot lava from mighty Kilauea flows downhill into the ocean, it actually extends the shoreline of the island. In fact, Kilauea’s eruptions in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park have created more than 100 acres of new oceanfront land.</p>

<p>Overshadowed by Kilauea, Punalu’u is one of Hawaii’s most well-known black sand beaches. This is a striking example of what happens when hot, volcanic lava meets the cold sea. The tiny particles left behind are certainly an unforgettable sight. Both tourists and numerous Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles absolutely love basking in the sun on the jet-black beach.</p>

<p>Nestled within Wailuku River State Park, this 80-foot waterfall is also known as “Rainbow Falls.” It is so named because every sunny morning at roughly 10:00 in the morning, you can see several rainbows in the mist of this towering waterfall.</p>

This rugged shoreline and its neighboring valley are considered by some to be a sacred place as it is home to some of the very first Hawaiian communities.</p>

<h2>Awesome Unmodern Molokai</h2>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Near endless summer weather means near endless opportunities for fun in the sun. Hiking, swimming, and surfing are all on the list in the hot spot of Hawaii. But have you ever considered camping in Hawaii?  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While your rovin’ writer has quite often considered returning to his birth state of Hawaii, even he never considered camping in the awesome Aloha State. Surely there must be other travelers who have also not considered this Pacific possibility. Thus, without further ado, here are 12 amazing, must-see camping spots in <a href="https://addtobucketlist.com/best-things-to-do-on-hawaiis-big-island/">Hawaii</a>: </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is a coastal, work-in-progress, lava-covered spot located off a gravel access road. It includes bays, lava flows, and a lot of open space. This stark park has little more than restrooms and you will have to bring in your own water. Still, you can go fishing, hiking, snorkeling, and swimming, and the isolation will certainly make it a much better place to spot wildlife and enjoy nature.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This recreation area is located 6,200-feet above sea level. Unless you like the cold, it’s best not to camp here in the winter as the nighttime temperatures can reach freezing. The forests aren’t tropical but more reminiscent of the US Pacific Northwest. Although hunting is permitted here, it’s more appealing to hikers as there are four hiking trails here: The Haleakala Ridge Trail, the Plum Trail, the Polipoli Trail, and the Redwood Trail.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Even the locals love this beachside camping spot. The shallow water near the shore is good for wading if you avoid the sharp coral and rocks in some spots. This is an especially great place for snorkeling where you might even see the state fish—the triggerfish—or parrotfish or unicornfish. This is also a great place to windsurf. Unfortunately, with the wind often comes rain, so be sure to bring a durable tent.</span></p>

<p>Heading for Hawaii? Whether you&#8217;re looking to see kaleidoscopic sand or feel the heat from being close to molten lava, there’s a lot to do on the Big Island. In fact, here are the best things to do there.</p>
<h4>1. Hawai&#8217;i Volcanoes National Park</h4>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6314" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1-4.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="485" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1-4.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1-4-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1-4-696x462.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/1-4-632x420.jpg 632w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>There are actually two active volcanoes here in this park. It’s the 4,000-foot-tall Kilauea, however, that you must see. It has been spewing and oozing since 1983.<br />
In fact, last May its eruptions forced evacuations and devastated communities. Have no fear though as the eruptions have long since stopped and it’s being monitored. Visit the knowledgeable Kilauea Visitor Center for current info on nearby hiking trails, safety tips, and where to expect to see the lava flow.</p>
<p><strong>(Continued on next page)</strong></p>
<h3>2. Akaka Falls State Park</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6317" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/2-6.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="489" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/2-6.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/2-6-300x201.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/2-6-696x466.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/2-6-627x420.jpg 627w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>Hilo&#8217;s Akaka Falls State Park in northeastern Hawai&#8217;i is a great place for hikers. In fact, visiting this park pretty much requires a brief, low-intensity hike. The paved, level loop trail is family-friendly too. Veteran visitors say you can do the entire trail through the park in as little as 20 minutes. Highlights to this park include a pair of consecutive waterfalls. There are the Kahuna Falls and the free-falling Akaka Falls, for which the park is named.<br />

<h3>3. Pu&#8217;uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6318" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/3-6.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="525" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/3-6.jpg 700w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/3-6-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/3-6-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/3-6-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/3-6-696x522.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/3-6-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>Up until the 1800s, if you faced the death penalty in Hawaii you could go to an area on the west coast called pu&#8217;uhonua, (or in English &#8220;place of refuge.&#8221;) There a local priest would forgive them. Today this locale is an official park and historical landmark. Highlights include breathtaking scenery, intricate ki&#8217;i (wood carvings), eye-catching temples, and resident honu, (Hawaiian green sea turtles). There’s not a lot of shade so be sure you wear a hat and take some water with you.<br />

<h3>4. Waipio Valley</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6319" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/4.png" alt="" width="700" height="525" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/4.png 700w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/4-300x225.png 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/4-80x60.png 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/4-265x198.png 265w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/4-696x522.png 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/4-560x420.png 560w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>The historic Waipio Valley is named after the river that runs through it. In English, the name means &#8220;curved water.&#8221; Found on the northeastern side of the island along the Hamakua Coast, this was where Captain James Cook first arrived in 1778.</p>
<p>Cook found it to be a fertile valley populated by about 10,000 locals. This was also once the residence of Kamehameha the Great and numerous other Hawaiian rulers, which is why it’s also known as &#8220;The Valley of the Kings.&#8221; Today it is a verdant Garden of Eden.<br />

<h3>5. Kaunaoa Beach</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6320" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/5-6.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="368" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/5-6.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/5-6-300x151.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/5-6-696x351.jpg 696w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>This is reported to be one of the most picturesque white sand beaches here. Arrive in Waimea early, before 8:30 a.m., to be sure you get one of the all-too-few parking spaces. Make a nice day trip of your visit to this eggshell-colored beach on the central, Kohala coast. Go for a swim, snorkeling, go or get into a pickup volleyball game. The popular Mauna Kea Resort flanks this beautiful beach and is reputed to be a great place to stay as well.</p>
<h3>6. Hilo Farmers Market</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6322" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/6-6.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="700" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/6-6.jpg 700w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/6-6-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/6-6-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/6-6-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/6-6-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>Local artisans and farmers gather here in downtown Hilo to sell everything from clothing to produce and seafood to handicrafts. This market held on the corner of Kamehameha Avenue and Mamo Street is the best place to sample local produce and (if you shop carefully) buy local crafts. You can buy such things as pineapples, jaboticaba fruit, and bongo drums. Show up early and be prepared to haggle. Enjoy some shaved ice and poke while you shop. It’s a great place for an early lunch too.</p>
<h3>7. Anaehoomalu Beach</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6323" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/7-6.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="873" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/7-6.jpg 700w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/7-6-241x300.jpg 241w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/7-6-696x868.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/7-6-337x420.jpg 337w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>Anaehoomalu Beach is said by some to be one of the premier beaches on the Kohala Coast. It has long been a popular spot for regular Big Island visitors. Frequent visitors and those in the know have nicknamed it &#8220;A-Bay.&#8221;</p>
<p>Stroll along this long stretch of salt and pepper sand, go for a swim, go snorkeling or try your hand at stand up paddleboarding. It’s really all good in the clear, calm water.</p>
<h3>8. Hapuna Beach State Park</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6324" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/8-6.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="486" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/8-6.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/8-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/8-6-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/8-6-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>Hapuna Beach is appropriately named. Hapuna is Hawaiian for “spring of life.&#8221; The beach at this state park is said to be “the most loved” on the entire Big Island.</p>
<p>Both the locals and tourists favor this place found on the South Kohala Coast and encourage you to do the same. Take in the turquoise waters and walk through the “soft-as-cotton” sand. Be sure to experience one of their famous unbelievable sunsets as well.</p>
<h3>9. Papakolea Beach</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6325" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/9-6.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="484" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/9-6.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/9-6-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/9-6-696x461.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/9-6-633x420.jpg 633w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>Visiting Papakolea Beach may not cost you anything but veteran visitors report it isn’t “for the faint of heart.” It is quite secluded but that also makes it a bit challenging to reach. There’s not a lot of shade or amenities and sometimes the water can be rough. The real reason most of the more intrepid travelers actually brave this beach is that once there they can honestly say that they have been to one of the only green sand beaches on the planet.</p>
<h3>10. Punalu&#8217;u Beach</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6326" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/10-5.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="524" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/10-5.jpg 700w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/10-5-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/10-5-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/10-5-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/10-5-696x521.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/10-5-561x420.jpg 561w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>This is not generally the place to be if you want to do some leisurely, carefree swimming. The water is too rocky and a bit rough for most people’s tastes. There is another reason to visit this particular Instagrammable southern beach.</p>
<p>See the unique, onyx-tinted sand born of the regular volcanic activity of Kilauea located in the famous Hawai&#8217;i Volcanoes National Park. Get a peek at the honu a.k.a. Hawaiian green sea turtles too.</p>
<h3>11. Kealakekua Bay</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6327" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/11-3.jpg" alt="" width="730" height="486" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/11-3.jpg 730w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/11-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/11-3-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/11-3-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px" /></p>
<p>Situated on the west coast of the island, this is a remote bay especially loved by snorkelers. Scuba divers love this place too. For beneath the shallow, calm surface of the water you can see sea turtles, various tropical fish, and the famous Hawaiian Spinner dolphins.</p>
<p>History buffs have another reason to check out this specific bay. The famous navigator known as Captain James Cook discovered this bay and even spent some time here back in January of 1779. Tensions rose a couple of weeks later and he was murdered here as well. See the large Captain Cook Monument across the bay as well. There’s even a nice picnic pavilion there.</p>

<p>Are you looking for something different? &nbsp; If the typical day at the beach no longer appeals to you then we’ve got something for you. &nbsp; Here in both warm and cold climates are the 12 most exotic black sand beaches in the world.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Ficogrande, Italy<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="729" height="486" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4855" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/ficogrande.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/ficogrande.jpg 729w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/ficogrande-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/ficogrande-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/ficogrande-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px" /></h2>
<p>Ficogrande is one of the more popular black sand beaches on Stromboli, an Aeolian Island north of Sicily, Italy. &nbsp;Accessible only via boat, its popular active volcano has erupted regularly for over 2,000 years.&nbsp; This beach offers travelers concessions stands, umbrellas, and lounge chairs. &nbsp;See the famous volcanic rock known as Strombolicchio.&nbsp; Stroll along the ebony sands and take a dip in the clear blue water of the welcoming Tyrrhenian Sea too.</p>
</p>
<h2>Miho Beach, Japan<br /><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="729" height="486" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4856" alt="" src="https://addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/miho-beach.jpg" srcset="https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/miho-beach.jpg 729w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/miho-beach-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/miho-beach-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.addtobucketlist.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/miho-beach-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px" /></h2>
<p>From the black sands of rocky, tree-lined Miho Beach the views of Mount Fuji are incredible. &nbsp; The bordering Miho-no-Matsubara pine grove includes literally thousands of pine trees.&nbsp; In 2013 the area was designated an official part of famous Mount Fuji&#8217;s UNESCO World Heritage Site.</p>
<p>Hit this beautiful beach in the summer and enjoy diving, fishing, kayaking, swimming, and windsurfing. &nbsp;Tale in the scenery, too.&nbsp; It actually inspired artist Utagawa Hiroshige’s famous traditional woodblock prints.</p>
