Indeed, there is more than one peak fall foliage period here in this 1500+-square mile park.  

Here there are two “falls” per year. Two groups of trees change color at two different times. The lower elevation aspen and cottonwood trees, often found along the river, turn yellow and orange-gold in the middle of September. In the middle of October, the Tamarack or western larch trees turn to gold before dropping their needles.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park And Preserve, Alaska

Yes, it’s true. Even the coldest places in the US can experience changes in the foliage. This park and preserve nestled in south-central Alaska near Copper Center were founded in 1980.  

This state park and preserve include an expansive 13,175,799+ acres. In fact, it is actually larger than nine states in the US. It is open all year, with most of the various facilities being open from May to September.  

The best time to see the leaves turn color here is from late August to early September. Feeling energetic? You can also go camping, hiking, hunting, kayaking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, and trapping here too. Just be sure to get all the correct permits and paperwork ahead of time!

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, And Idaho

This national park is so large it stretches across three states: Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. It has an area of more than 3,500 square miles. It is also the country’s oldest national park and even inspired Yogi Bear’s famous Jellystone Park. 

Yellowstone is famous for being the home of the nigh-iconic geyser Old Faithful, and the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring. Ah, but even though it does not have as many trees as other national parks, the numerous shrubs and even the grassland takes on a gorgeous golden hue yearly. Indeed, if you wish to witness this occurrence, your best bet is to visit from the final week of September through the first week of October.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Famous Rocky Mountain National Park is in the north-central portion of the state in the Rocky Mountains’ Front Range. More specifically, this scenic park is located between the towns of Grandt Lake and Este Park. It encompasses 265,461 acres.

Acadia National Park, Maine

The Acadia National Park is located mainly on popular Mount Desert Island. The park is actually a unique blend of seaside villages, parkland, and private property. This national park has quite a lot to offer visitors due in part to the fact that it includes both the mountains and the sea. 

You will also find beautiful beaches, campgrounds, and 100-plus miles of popular hiking trails. Fall aficionados should visit the first half of October. The change of colorful contrast of the hardwoods’ leaves with the dark, lush evergreens and the blue of the sea is striking.  

Drive your car from the Hulls Cove Visitor Center along the 27-mile loop road and stop at some of the overlooks and viewpoints there. Get a closer look by hiking the park’s historic rustic carriage roads.

Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

About 80 miles south of Seattle, is the snow-capped dormant volcano known as Mount Rainier. The corresponding park includes 236,381 acres and features forests, lava fields, waterfalls, and even glaciers. The leaves here begin to change in September.

A great place to see the multi-colored trees, shrubs, and plants is Reflection Lakes on Stevens Canyon Road. On a clear day, the reflecting colors are positively vibrant. If you’re feeling athletic, hike the Skyline Loop Trail. It is a challenging trail that runs for over five miles, but it is also a great way to see such other popular natural highlights such as Tatoosh Peaks, Mount Hood, and Mount Adams as well.

3.  The Catskill Mountains, New York

Also known as simply the Catskills, the Catskill Mountains, are actually a physiographic province of the considerably larger, renowned Appalachian Mountains, found in the southeastern portion of the state.

They are usually geographically defined as the sections near or in the 700,000-acre forest preserve known as Catskill Park. This undeveloped area is protected under state law. Founded in 1653, the noteworthy town of Huntington is one of 10 different towns you will find in Suffolk County. 5.  Stowe, Vermont

The popular Eastern Shore of Maryland is mainly (and unsurprisingly) on the east side of the well-known Chesapeake Bay. It includes nine counties. Seven of them feature Chesapeake Bay coastlines. 

This relatively rural region also includes Maryland’s singular coast on the Atlantic Ocean. It is also part of the Delmarva Peninsula which is shared between Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. See the gorgeous leaves in the Elk Neck State Park region. Then sample some Maryland crabs as well.

8.  North Conway, New Hampshire

North Conway is a CDP (census-designated place) in eastern Carroll County. This all-year resort area is also the largest village in the town called Conway. Take a scenic drive on the 34-mile stretch of Kancamagus Highway in the beautiful White Mountain National Forest.

Take in the memorable vistas during early October. You can also go biking, hiking, and rock climbing. Dine at one of the local restaurants. Do you enjoy shopping? North Conway is famous for its surprisingly large number of outlet shops.

9.  Lenox, Massachusetts

Lenox, in Berkshire County, is a little but culturally rich town. After all, it is home to both Tanglewood and Shakespeare & Company. More importantly for leaf lovers, a visit here will reportedly put you right in the center of Massachusetts’ fall foliage-viewing action.

10.  The Poconos, Pennsylvania

It is 729 feet high. Visitors can actually see it from several different hiking trails in the park. 13.  Franklin, Tennessee

 The city of Franklin is the official county seat of Williamson County. You will find it less than 21 miles south of legendary Nashville. Leaf lovers should visit in late October or early November.  

The colors are especially bright in early November. The place is alive with color from the native hickory, maple, oak, and popular poplar trees. Take a brisk stroll through historic downtown and the foliage favored Natchez Trace Parkway. Arrive the Saturday before Halloween and you can even attend the holiday-themed annual fundraiser known as Pumpkinfest. 14.  The Staten Island Greenbelt, New York

The Staten Island Greenbelt is essentially a system of adjoining public parkland and other natural areas situated in Staten Island’s central hills. This is New York City’s second-biggest component of parks. It includes beech, hickory, maple, and oak trees. There are even tulips. It all adds up to an attractive hike for city dwellers who just can’t get away for the weekend.

Hasn’t everyone already heard of Cape May? If not, the city of Cape May can be found on the tip of the Cape May Peninsula in cozy Cape May County. It is an old, well-known seaside resort popular with tourists.  

The best time for leaf peepers to visit is roughly from the middle of October through November. Kill two birds with one stone and take in the changing fall colors from one of the historic lighthouses in the area.  Somerset County is also nice.

16.  Brooklyn, New York

What’s so special about the borough of Brooklyn, New York? It turns out that it is actually a great palace for dazzling urbanites to get a fast fall foliage fix. For it is here you’ll find the beautiful Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

21.  The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Washington

This U.S. National Forest situated in Okanogan County encompasses 1,499,013 acres. It’s bordered by British Columbia, Canada to the north. Okanogan and Omac are the two closest, significant towns. 1.  Blue Ridge Mountains, Georgia

Take a road trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia.  Start your drive at The Russell Brasstown Scenic Byway and drive through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains along the well-known Chattahoochee River. 

Stop in the Bavarian-village-like town of Helen and then the state’s highest natural point, Brasstown Bald, which is also reportedly Georgia’s “ultimate foliage viewing vantage point.”  Go for a hike in the popular Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, see the vineyards in Georgia Wine Country, and finish in Tallulah Gorge State Park to the east.

2.  Rhode Island’s Little Charms

4.  The Pennsylvania Wilderness

You’ll find plenty of peaceful forest and mountain scenery in northern Pennsylvania on historic Route 6.  Be sure to take a brief detour to St. Marys and visit the well-known Straub Brewery which has been in business for decades.  Hit the 76-mile Elk Country Loop that passes through the Pennsylvania wilderness where large herds of elk live.  Visit the stunning Worlds End State Park too,  Camp outdoors, or rent a cabin.  Either way, be sure to take a hike on the lovely Loyalsock Trail and see the colorful forest up close.

5.  The Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

This winding All American Road and National Parkway road runs for nearly 470 miles.  It connects the award-winning Great Smoky Mountains National Park located in North Carolina to the striking Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.  Along the way. you’ll see mountain meadows, old farmsteads, scenic overlooks, and split-rail fences.  You can even stop on the way and tour a historic home, visit a local farm, or explore one of the many hiking trails.

6.  Connecticut’s Colors 

Cruise the approximately 100-mile loop through the northwest corner of Connecticut.  See the Town of Falls Village found in Canaan.  There you’ll find churches, homes, streets, and a railroad depot that look just as they did back in the 1800s.  

Take a day hike on the local portion of the famous Appalachian Trail.  Drive through the quaint West Cornwall Covered Bridge, which hovers 172 feet above the Housatonic River.  Enjoy the foliage as you hike through Lake Waramaug State Park.  Make one more stop in Litchfield and see White Flower Farm.

7.  The Historic Trails Of New England

New England does have some beautiful fall foliage.  There are also places to go hiking or pick up a little history.  Begin your trek in Boston.

Hike the red-lined, 2.5-mile Freedom Trail.  It will take you to 16 historic sites.  Then head west through the Berkshires of Massachusetts where you’ll find lots of fall color.  Don’t forget to stop at the historical living museum Old Sturbridge Village.  Head south to Philadelphia to see the educational Museum of the American Revolution.

8.  The California Coast

Summer is traditionally a good time to cruise the California coast but it’s warm and beautiful in the fall too.  Begin your adventure with an oceanside hike in popular Point Mugu State Park.  Next, follow Highway 101 to Santa Barbara, and spend time exploring State Street’s shops and eateries.  

Branch off for a stop in the Danish-like town of Solvang.  Sample some fresh pea soup, visit the wineries and enjoy the scenery.  If you still have time, head north and take in more of the ocean scenery there.

9.  The Olympic Peninsula

Explore Washington state’s rugged coast and see the lush forests and massive mountains of Olympic National Park.  Begin in the city of Seattle, the birthplace of grunge music, and follow the loop around Puget Sound.  Take a detour and ride a ferry to Vashon Island.  

There you can stroll along the beach and visit old Point Robinson Lighthouse.  Go for a hike in beautiful Olympic National Park, then drive on to historic Port Townsend.  There you can see all the Victorian houses and old waterfront neighborhoods.

10.  The Gulf Coast Of Florida

If you want to avoid the powerful heat and humidity of summer and see some striking scenery then drive around here in the fall.  Cruise the 19-mile drive on Highway 30A.  This takes you along the sparkling Gulf of Mexico, or even further if you wish.  

Visit one of the beach neighborhoods in South Walton where the sand is white as sugar due to its quartz crystal makeup. Stop and see the coastal dune lakes that only exist in a few places on the planet.  Grab a bite to eat at Airstream Row.  It’s an interesting street lined with aluminum eateries serving up tasty treats.

11.  The Oregon Coast

Let’s be honest.  The Oregon coast does not have all that much foliage in the fall.  Still, we’ve included it on this special list because the area has its own unique scenery to offer day-trippers.

Start in the city of Astoria, then drive south.  Stop to go hiking at Ecola Beach and the Lewis And Clark National And State Historical Park.  Stop and stay awhile in Cannon Beach.  Explore the huge boulders there, especially Haystack Rock.  Take a detour to visit the Tillamook Creamery too.

12.  The Great Lakes

Drive along the Great Lakes and skirt the nation’s northern border.  Begin your tri[ at the southern edge of famous Lake Huron.  There you can see the tall ship schooners and pick up a souvenir in Bay City’s downtown antiques market.

From there head north along the edge of the lake.  Go hiking through the Thunder Bay River State Forest. Then stop in memorable Mackinaw City and ride the ferry to Mackinac Island.  There you can go bicycling or even enjoy a genuine horse and buggy around the historic island.

“Get your kicks on route six six . . .” Yes, this historic highway even rates its own song.  Why?  Because it’s well worth exploring– in whole or in part.

Follow the Mississippi River along the 3,00-mile-long Great River Road.  Along the way be sure to stop in Chicago, Illinois, Madison, Wisconsin, and Saint Paul, Minnesota.  Detour into Nashville, Tennessee, and Jackson, Mississippi.  Spend some time in Mississippi Palisades State Park, too.  Here you can set up camp, go hiking, or relax and simply commune with nature.
