Some travel writers say that this medieval town in Campania makes a magical first impression. Roughly 35 kilometers northeast of famous Naples, it comes complete with all the expected charms. Perhaps one of the most obvious unique aspects of this place is its location.

Indeed, serene Sant’Agata de’ Goti is seemingly precariously perched atop a sheer. Steep bluff high above a rushing river gorge. Veteran visitors say this historical commune’s position is bound to make you feel as if you are actually cut off from everyone and everything else on the planet.

Katskhi Pillar, Georgia

Visit this sacred albeit isolated place of worship, almost 40 meters high atop this well-known pillar in Georgia. This levitated landmark, about 200 kilometers west of the capital city of Tbilisi, is notoriously famous for being decidedly difficult (if not downright dangerous) to reach. At one time, residents were unable to do little more than gaze skyward at these mysterious raised ruins at its summit for hundreds of years. It was not until 1944, that experienced mountaineer Alexander Japaridze led a team to this place and completed the first officially documented climb of this pillar. To this very day, only mountain climbers have reached the sacred ruins of the church.

The Swallow’s Nest, Ukraine

Also known as the Love Nest, the Swallow’s Nest is a characteristic castle situated on the edge of the shining Crimean Sea in the spa town of Gaspra. It remains an intriguing remainder of the Russian Empire. It is arguably one of the most perplexing places for such an attractive castle. Erected in 1911, this castle has survived an earthquake and stood a silent witness to a lot of local history. Hanging Temple, China

China’s Hanging Temple is an exceptional architectural wonder. This temple is built into an actual cliff close to Mount Heng in Shanxi Province. Constructed over 1500 years ago, it was built without the wooden pillars that presently appear to support it. The building was actually built by drilling a number of holes into the rock cliff. It includes a total of 40 rooms that are connected with several different passageways.

Castellfollit de la Roca, Spain

Travel to Catalonia, for it is here that you will find the marvelous medieval village of Castellfollit de la Roca. It actually sits upon a Brobdingnagian basalt column. The majority of the homes and streets here are built out of volcanic rock. The once conventionally shaped village was expanded over a kilometer-long basalt configuration because of some incredible, unnamed force. The town’s main street now wanders around the entire community.

Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe, France

You can’t miss this charming chapel in Aiguilhe, not far from Le Puy-en-Velay. It is well over 1000 years old and was erected on an 85-meter-high volcanic plug in 969. The top of the plug has a diameter of 57 meters.

It was constructed to celebrate the return of Bishop Godescalc of Le Puy-en-Velay from the famous Pilgrimage of Saint James back in 951. In order to tour the chapel, one must climb 268 steps that were carved into the rock long ago. Dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the official patron saint of “mountaintops and other high places.” Veteran visitors say that hiking up those ancient steps gives you the feeling that you’re climbing “into the sky.”

Meteora, Greece

This remarkable rock formation is situated close to the town of Kalabaka. Since 1995, it has been an official UNESCO Heritage Site. It has been an official Greek holy place since then as well. This huge complex consists of gigantic natural rock pillars and rounded, hill-like boulders. Eastern Orthodox monasteries were built here centuries ago. Travelers in the know say it is a surreal landscape unlike any other on the planet.

The Death Road, Bolivia

The (North) Yungas Road in Bolivia is also known as the “Death Road.” The treacherous thoroughfare through the Amazon rainforest can be distinctly dangerous mainly because reportedly “unprecedented climatic conditions” impact on the accessibility. The Interamerican Development Bank deigned it the “World’s Most Dangerous Road” in 1995. Approximately 300 people perished there every year prior to the construction of another road between Coroico and La Paz in 2006. Oymyakon, Russia

What is most dangerous here is the quantity and depth of the snow and ice! Russian winters are reputed to include extreme temperatures and climatic conditions that result in death. Snake Island, Brazil

It might not be in a dangerous location, but Snake Island is obviously unsafe! You will discover this infamous island roughly 40 kilometers off the sparkling coast of Brazil. Mind you, more recently, the Brazilian government has made it illegal for tourists to go there.  

Local sources report that more than one fisherman has died there “drowned in a pool of blood.” Their deaths were caused by the world’s deadliest serpent, the dreaded golden lancehead snake. Apparently, these snakes populate the insidious isle.
