I lived in Portland, OR for 46 years and I have been to the Japanese Garden many times. It is the largest & most authentic one outside of Japan. The other thing about Portland is it's distinction as the Rose City, we have a huge Rose Festival in early June with Princesses chosen from each local high school, a tradition over 100 years old. The roses we celebrate are from the International Rose Test Gardens, adjacent to the Japanese Garden. It makes for a serene afternoon as it is all adjacent to one of our most beautiful parks--Washington Park. High in the west hills, the views of the city and beyond are breathtaking. On a clear day you can much of the Cascades Range, Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, Mt Jefferson & sometimes a peak at the 3 Sisters, stunning! And if the kids are bored, the Oregon Zoo is also next door, the elephants are famous as is their habitat.
