11. Lake Kivu

Situated on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes. It may appear to be peaceful but it holds a deadly secret. The lake not only contains multiple layers of CO2 but also 55 billion cubic meters of methane on the bottom. Just one slight earthquake could set off an explosion that would kill more than 2 million locals living in the area.

Creatures From The Deep

The truth is any place you choose to swim, be it a lake, a river or an ocean, can be unsafe. Even tourist spots can sometimes be populated by hagfish, lampreys, leeches, and other unpleasant water-dwellers. So do your due diligence on any body of water you’re considering exploring.
